The reason the international cosplay community believes Belgium is a joke is because the moment somebody rises above the crowd or just even wins something in a certain contest the likes of you starts tearing them down for no real reason.

Pretty much, they are still figuring things out and just changed the format of the contest.
Until now it was just a preselection at pt with some international guests and then the final was held somewhere else(one year was in Brasil and one in Denmark I believe). Last year the selection was in pt again with international guests like shappi and the final was YET in pt again where shappi won because no one here takes it seriously and they sometimes pick some good and well known cosplayers.
It's fucked up to the core I would say because the format and rules are all messed up.
But hey if you have the opportunity to travel and even win money why not?
Just warning you there's nothing World Masters about it... it's just a contest... with pt people and some international people.
The organization behind it has its controversy as well some love some hate.

And I know it's fun to just point at the NVA and say them fuckers blew it, but the government has been blowing it for a decade or so, and before you go whining about how we should be socialist, I'd like to point out that the SPA has been right on board and laughing as they voted yes on some of the most right wing bills in our history.

Long story short, the situation is fucked, and was fucked well before you were allowed to vote, and the only realistic way to keep our dear country from ending up like Greece is breaking it down and starting over.
