just to put it into perspective: A ticket to Drachenfest is 116 usd at the moment (gets more and more expensive closer to the event, you can get it even for 95 usd if you buy it early on) and that's for a week.
Although you have to bring your tent and food isn't included.

The 18th century style faux rustic style as led by Marie Antoinette tended to look more like this one, the more overt examples of shepherdess dress are likely to be from costume balls rather than day-to-day wear I'd say.

>the more overt examples of shepherdess dress are likely to be from costume balls rather than day-to-day wear I'd say.

I don't think anyone is saying they were day to day wear! In the same way that portraits of women as goddesses weren't examples of day to day wear, or portraits of women with their breasts hanging out doesn't mean they went around baring it all.

The more overt examples of 18th century shepherdess dresses were mainly for portraits. Since they were popular from about the 1750s up until the 1780s (though to a different and lesser extent) their style ranges depending on the era. But regardless of the era, the main distinction is the addition of "country" or "peasant" accessories that are meant to invoke--well, country life, idealized peasantry, shepherdesses, etc.

Semi related note, but I finally found some clear photos of one of the few extant chemise a la reines left. And last I heard, the website of the collection its in is redoing its collection gallery with new (and better) images.

I think the style anon might be looking for is more like this. Marie Antoinette wore is while playing 'shepherdess' at a country home apparently because she didn't enjoy court life and the clothing she had to wear; hence the 'free' bust area and 'simple' sash tied at the waist.

Made a quick image for you! The chemise and the typical exaggerated shepherdess style are just... very different beasts! The exact features of the shepherdess style can very by decade, since it's basically a portrait costume it evolved with the ties. The most iconic are those with the laced up bodices and aprons or laces and ample hip floof, which also showed up in a lot of 19th century paintings of 18th century life..

Just watched this movie a week ago, In Secret. It was good enough-- especially if you like depressing historical fiction. It was also nice to look at.

They're not terribly historically accurate (more like 1930s meets 18th century) but hot damn I love the costumes from the old Marie Antoinette movie with Norma Shearer.

Right!
I happened to watch a little of a program talking about clothing of the era and this painting came up. The curator said that it represented the omnipotence of the monarch. She had eyes and ears everywhere.

"Attributed to Isaac Oliver, perhaps the most heavily symbolic portrait of the queen is the Rainbow Portrait. It was painted around 1600–1602, when the queen was in her sixties. In this painting an ageless Elizabeth appears dressed as if for a masque, in a linen bodice embroidered with spring flowers and a mantle draped over one shoulder, her hair loose beneath a fantastical headdress.[65] She wears symbols out of the popular emblem books: the cloak with eyes and ears, the serpent of wisdom, the celestial armillary sphere, and carries a rainbow with the motto non sine sol iris ("no rainbow without the sun"). Strong suggests that the complex "programme" for this image may be the work of the poet John Davies, whose Hymns to Astraea honouring the queen use much of the same imagery, and suggests it was commissioned by Robert Cecil as part of the decor for Elizabeth's visit in 1602, when a "shrine to Astraea" featured in the entertainments of what would prove to be the "last great festival of the reign".

Padding maybe? Also the general cut of the dress helps. Sloping shouders were considered beautiful at the time.

If you mean the password, but the name in front of the code I have been using here for years. Shit finally boiled over. I didn't use a secure code because I didn't think somebody would be this mad with me to find out the password. I just want them to message me on tumblr and see what their terms are. If they want me to leave /cgl/ for good, fine, whatever, I'll leave if they hate me this much.
