It was really uncomfortable sleeping in it and opposed to what it says in the tutorial ("they last for days!"), they were almost gone half through the day. My hair just doesn't like to be curled though (even though it has naturally wavy and curly parts), so I am sure the tutorial works great for different kind of hairs...you should just give it a go!

Different anon, but what are you talking about? There are tons of professionals that use manga studio. I do assistant work for a marvel/DC inker that uses it for pretty much all his digital work and says that it's a well respected program in the comic book industry.

I never post, but I miss this dress so much and would adore any art in it. Excuse my little one's messy blankies/room, hers are the only full length mirrors in the place!

Diff anon but I think it might be because the idea of using a more basic program like gimp/manga studio etc vs. a more advanced program like Photoshop cs is similar to using crayola pencils vs. Prismacolor. They have the same function but its a lot harder to produce quality stuff with the same technical skill. And honestly, u have a great style going for you. Nice line work and such but you honestly need to brush up on basic values and lighting. Honestly you can only go so far in a mock up, now its about refining what you already have. Not drawing more but exceeding your current capabilities.

Lighting and values are something I practice and need to improve. My colors most of the time are flat/cell shaded so if I try something paintish I'm a fish out of water. I am working on values whenever and trying to break out of my safe zone of coloring. I need to work more on refining and keeping things from looking like a color vomit. Thanks!

I think we really gotta start including regulations/norms in these draw threads because they always end up being like 60% shitposts and 40% actual drawing.

There's nothing wrong with critique, but there's always a time and place, and there's always room for just general decency. Critique is great, but not when it starts with trashing another artist's preference in drawing programs and generally derails the thread.

Draw threads are for drawing. If you want to critique, fine, but critique in a way that won't piss people off and fuck up the thread. If you want to critique in a way that WILL piss people off, go to /ic/ or something because there are entire threads dedicated to that shit.

Lmao I've done commissions in fucking firealpaca. Anyone who actually gets salty over art programs makes me chuckle because it's always people who think like "more expensive pencils are better!" and "I just need to know all the tricks the pros know and then I'll be just as good as them!"

Programs and tools mean nothing unless you can actually use them. Digits is not a bad artist. They have a style that doesn't really appeal to me, but they're not terrible and are clearly trying to grow. Speaking as someone who's done work in dozens of different programs, there's nothing glaringly wrong with Manga Studio. I would recommend it to an illustrator over photoshop - PS is serviceable but it's made for editing photos and you really start to feel it when you try to do more intensive illustration.

I use Sai for linework as well, as does my partner and our close professional friends. Photoshop simply has no ability to stabilize the line enough to where it doesn't look like shit for heavy linework pieces.

There's just no thing as "X program is better in the professional world". Because ALL of them are used interchangeably. Photoshop is notorious for having shit lineart functions, but some random nobody who just learned photoshop in class and came here to shitpost wouldn't know any better.

Artists you listed who use sai are basically glorified professional tumblr artists...

Anyway, yea every other professional artists in the entertainment/concept art industry as in your animations, movies games all use Photoshop. Even for professional graphic design.
God tier people in the industry like James paick, Anthony Jones, Marko Djurdjevuc, Karla Ortiz, Fenghua Zhong(fucking master artist ohgod)...

Photoshop is infinitely faster and efficient to use than sai with way more capabilities and infinite brush customization and settings. Notice how almost all sai paintings have the same style of brush strokes, color and the too-smooth painterly look. Even in line work it has that effect.

And of course with illustration and concept art, there are matte painters as well(who mainly reside in the film industry) they are all, 'professional artists' and honestly under this scope, photoshop's popularity exceeds sai. Besides let's be real here, if you are actually active on tumblr, you probably use sai...

tbh I can literally relate this sai vs Photoshop debate to Mac vs Linux, sai is all pretty, easy and basic while Photoshop you actually gotta learn to use it to its full capabilities...

Uggh I know I'm just feeding offtopic discussion here but I just wanted to point out that not every professional thinks photoshop is the best at everything.
Photoshop isn't good at clear smooth lines like SAI is. (Even if you dislike the style, photoshop can't do it well.)
Photoshop isn't very good for painterly works. Though it's getting better, photoshop has no proper way of actually "painting", blending colours like tradional mediums do. SAI does this a little better but Corel Painter is still the best at this.
On top of that, photoshop is fucking expensive, and paint tool SAI costs like 50 bucks. Not all startups can afford the fancy programs, so if SAI fulfills your needs... why would you buy the more expensive program?

But to the person that this discussion was originally about: it would probably be good if you tried out photoshop for a month. (They still do trials, right?) Just to see if the other anons might be right, and the program IS the thing holding you back. It would be a shame if it was, y'know?

Every professional I know uses SAI for sketching/linework and Photoshop for post cleanup/fancier inking options. Also everyone in Japan pretty much does the same thing, pro or not, take a look at pixiv.

You are able to blend and do all sorts of things in photoshop if you check out all the brush options or install some good custom brushes. It is extremely powerful and effective as a painting tool if you know how to use the program well. Someone can use photoshop for years and not even scrape the surface of what it can do.

I agree with other anons in that it doesn't matter what tool you use, it's technique that matters in the end. Professionally you can use whatever you are most comfortable with, or if you work for a company you abide by the software they want you to use.

I really like your painting and cartooning style, you just pushed the face past 'endearingly goofy' into the ugly zone. If you tweaked the nose to be a little more petite it would be better.
