Not interested in how many pieces you had or how much you'd spent, but how long was it before you felt that you had a "complete" (or relatively complete) lolita wardrobe? Asking because I made my first order over a year ago and I've spent $1500 since (not even buying brand) and I still don't feel like I'm there.

Looking over my current wishlist, I think I'll be able to afford a wardrobe I'm fairly with (that I'll have a few different items in each of the colour schemes in my wardrobe so I can mix and match and and be able to add new main pieces at will, and won't have loads of stuff sitting around with nothing it coordinates with) by late June or mid July, but that seems like a long way away. At the moment I'm looking at at least 6 more main pieces, 4 more blouses, a couple of boleros, another bag, some more accessories and some more shoes before I'm satisfied...

I've been into Lolita for something like 7 or 8 years, wasn't able to start buying clothes until about 4 years ago, and this year is going to be the first year I actually have some complete outfits because I'm making a goal to save money and get a very small "proper" wardrobe started. I spent the 4 years buying different things trying to experiment and find what suits me and what I like and what fits my lifestyle, it took me until the beginning of this year to figure that out. I feel like I wasted my money and I'm kicking myself so hard for not planning better when I first got into the fashion years ago, but at least now I'll have a very small chance of wasting my money on something that I won't like or that won't suit me in the future.

I feel like a persons wardrobe can never truly be "complete" in any fashion or even in general, because clothes will always get worn out, quit fitting, or whatever. People are always loosing and gaining clothes. Personally, for me I only want a basic Lolita wardrobe because I prefer casual and old school styles. A few blouses in basic black and white, a few basic shoes (well, that and the funky colored ones I bought without thinking) and several dresses and skirts. I'm not into print collecting so it won't bother me to only have a few dresses. I'll be more satisfied if I have just a few special pieces than I would be to have a bunch of stuff. So for me a complete wardrobe is just having enough things for me to be able to enjoy dressing up regularly.

>> No.8182922

>>8182871
You will never be satisfied.

I don't want to ask whether you think this is ethically right but I was wondering how you think the community reacts to wearing bag and shoe replicas?
As an example every goth and their mom has the moitie bat bag it seems and people openly say on their posts that their bag is taobao.
Similarly tight copies also seem to be worn a lot and no one's pretending their aren't copies.

Depends, what kind of question is it and how long as it been since they read it? If you asked a simple question like, is this black or dark navy blue and it's been a week since they read it, I would message them again. If it's been one day and you did something like ask how much shipping would be or for a set of measurements, they may have went to go find out and got busy or it's taking them awhile to get the answer. I would politely message them saying something like "I'm sorry to bother you, but I just wanted to check up on my question about x. If you need some time to check on that, just let me know." ? Even though you're annoyed, try to be as calm and patient for as long as possible before being bitch. I get annoyed with this too but sometimes I have to stop and remember sometimes I don't respond to messages right away either, especially if I have to go find out about an answer, although in that case I will usually tell people if it will take me some time to answer their question and I think that is a courtesy people should do if that's the case.

Legally it's a different issue, you can't copyright a design but you can copyright art or a logo. Also depends how generic the design is. For example, I definitely don't see issues with the Milk heart bag replicas, because the design's so simple. Tea Party replica shoes don't bother me in the slightest (partly because they're one of the only styles of shoe that work with modern sweet, so if you don't buy them as an OTT sweet lolita your coords are gonna look pretty crap). But for some reason I feel more uncomfortable with replica BtSSB lumiere shoes (even though I was contemplating buying some myself the other day). Partly because it's a more unique design, partly because while tbh people are more likely to think your tea parties are Taobao than AP (same thing with bat bags), replicas of the lumiere shoes are seen less often so it seems more like you're trying to pass off a fake as real.

Just a wearable wardrobe? Almost immediately. I limited my choices to some specific colours and theme (based off my first burando outfit, which was a lucky pack), picked out 3-4 dresses from taobao, picked blouses, shoes, bag and headwear that went with most of them, and that was my starter wardrobe. Definitely couldn't last a week of daily lolita, but I could do half a year of lolita meetups and a couple of cons by mixing and matching.

A wardrobe where I'm so happy with it that I stop buying? Probably never. I split off from my specific colour a long time ago, and I find my tastes changing every few years. I think I'm due for another wardrobe overhaul this year or next, my age has been catching up with me and now I find myself slightly reluctant to wear the most OTT pastel sweet in my wardrobe, so they might as well go on to new homes while I look for more toned down sweet stuff, which may mean I do end up with a few pieces hanging around with nothing to match them with, or some of them might have only 1 coord temporarily.

I don't particularly mind the wardrobe overhaul aspect, though. It seems like a lot of the fun of lolita is in looking for perfect items to make coords with, buying them, waiting for them to arrive, and then hopefully elation as the outfit comes together perfectly as predicted. Soon as I'm done with this overhaul I'll probably decide I like another colour better and start over again anyway.

Haha yup, I'd figured out what suited me beofre I started buying but I just liked so many different styles and kept seeing stuff for sale that I wanted before it sold out even if it wasn't a style that'd match everything in my wardrobe. So far I've got elements of classic, gothic, sweet, pirate and military all in one wardrobe, and this next order is adding something sailor-style into the mix. If I wear classic I mostly wear jewel tones or dark colours, but the first dress I bought was sweet-classic and I've only just got all the items I need to coord it (I lost motivation for building coords around it once it arrived because I felt uncomfortably sweet when I wore it, but I loved the print so I didn't want to sell it). I saw an eyepatch for sale and couldn't resist because I love the way they look, even though it's not a very practical item; the same thing happened with novelty bags. Then a couple of the usual small beginner issues like buying stuff and finding you've converted to Japanese shoe sizes wrong and having to sell it. I would probably feel happier with my wardrobe if I'd shopped smarter, but I still definitely wouldn't be there yet.

>>8182922
Well, I think I'll always have wishlist stuff I want, but by "satisfied" I mean having a good base wardrobe, which I can buy a new dress to add to without having to buy a fuckton of other stuff to be able to coord it, and which has enough clothes for me to mix-and-match and wear different coords to meets. At the moment I have a lot of items I can't make a 100% complete coord with, which means that even though I probably have 15 or 20 basic outfits by now, I only have a handful that I feel are "good enough" for a meet where people are more likely to notice things like missing accessories.

>> No.8183048

While we are talking about wardrobes, how is yours put together?
I feel like most people fall into 2 categories the "I buy what I want when I want and then scramble to put together 1 outfit with that thing that matches nothing else"
or the cohesive style heavy wardrobe (Ie, all sweet/classic/goth/whatever, more defined like chocolate, everything must match with this color, ectect)

Personally, I started off with an "everything must match with pink" kind of mindset so everything I had would match with my pink and white accessories...But I have thrown that out and just buy whatever I want and then buy accessories and other pieces based around main dream pieces. I feel like I have 3 separate wardrobes (one sweet, classic, and goth) and try to get pieces that work within it, but I can't stick to just one style.
(Sorry, typos everywhere I'm on my phone)

Oh, I had a wardrobe like that almost immediately but I still felt like it had too many limitations. I could make outfits but I felt so restricted in what I could do when I only had, for example, one black blouse and one white blouse and I didn't have any stand collar blouses or bell-sleeved blouses or anything to really change the feel of different coords. It's only recently that I've began to feel like I've had more than a copuple of coording options.

I've cut out a couple of the colours in my wardrobe but I still have a huge amount. Basically got every non-pastel colour but purple, bright red and yellow. I've been trying to make the style more cohesive too, by doing stuff like selling off the kuro sweet items I bought when I was starting out because they were easier to find than properly gothic items.

Ah, my starter wardrobe colour choices were much, much, much smaller than that -- my burando LP was a btssb pink jsk with bows, matched with a white blouse, so I limited myself to only pink and white, and the theme was bows. So my rule was every piece I buy had to be either pink or have a lot of pink in it, and had to have either real bows or bows in the print.

What I lost with my limited colour palette, I gained in versatility with styles. I had only white or offwhite blouses, not even cream or ivory, for eg, but I had a few different styles. I got as far as getting a few pink classic lolita knockoff dresses and then using the same blouse and socks for a sweet lolita dress. I even had some other colours in my wardrobe, I had sax Tiara Rose, although the pink was a little off, it still looked pretty okay with pink accessories since the main part of the print were the rose bouquets with bows on them. So I got an okay amount of coords out of what little I had.

Too bad it only lasted half a year. I gradually ended up with other colours than pink, and some of them looked off with just pink accessories, so my first wardrobe overhaul was going from pink x white to a pastel rainbow wardrobe.

Sometimes I think about how nice it would be to go back to that kind of strictly colour-controlled wardrobe, but there are dresses with so many more interesting colours out now. So I think an approach where I just try to overhaul my wardrobe every other year, sell off the items I don't wear and then look for coordinating items on a case by case basis, is much better than trying to limit myself to only specific colour palettes. This is just my feeling, though, and the approach is rather high maintenance, but I enjoy the process, so I don't really mind.

I save up and splurge. I'd go months without a lolita purchase, and then a few items will start popping up at a great price, and since I have the money I'd buy them all (or as many as I can, anyway). Some months seem to have girls dumping cheap stuff on the secondhand market, some other months everything seems expensive.

I actually received as many boxes as that pic in a single month some time last year. My family sat me down and had "serious talk" with me about my "shopping addiction". What it was was just good bargains, nice releases and some preorders all coming in at the same time, that's all. Wish I'd thought of documenting it, I never thought it would be such a sensational topic.

>How many items do you get in a month?
That is wildly variable too... I am actually not sure. The price effects how much I buy.

>Do you mostly buy from secondhand or direct from the brand?
Mostly second hand because the items I want are no longer available, or I can get a better deal second hand from the people that cycle through their wardrobes insanely quickly. I'll buy direct every few months if there's a release I must have.

Currently I'm on a 6-month spending ban but if I were to average everything out I'd probably buy something at least once a month. Though "buying something" could range from a single brand JSK to a big taobao or Bodyline order.

>Do you often buy main pieces or accessories?
I'm fairly balanced in that regard but I'm not a very accessory heavy person so I'm more inclined to buy actual clothing items than smaller accessories.

>How many items do you get in a month?
Again, it varies but to average out the last 2.5 years of buying it's probably 3-5 things a month.

>Do you mostly buy from secondhand or direct from the brand?
Mostly direct from brand [though it's not always brand brand, I do love me my taobao] because something in me doesn't like paying 100+ for something used that was originally only about 250. I also don't really have a wishlist of dream dresses for that reason, so I just buy what I like that's currently available. Though I can't pass up a good deal so I do buy a little secondhand.

Thoughts on this skirt? It kinda reads as poor man's Moitie to me I must admit but I still kinda like it, I wish the frill wasn't so big though. I'm on the look out for stylish, non-ott gothic pieces and this particular skirt made it into my 'maybe' pile.

Funny to see this right after I posted about it haha. I really love this print, it's just so crazy and bright and a bit unusual. I LOVE that cut, I hope I can get my hands on it some day. Anyways I wish I could offer more of an opinion but it's still in the mail, getting the pink colorway. I think the way it's coorded also will depend on the style of the jsk...if you're getting the one pictured imo you'll definitely wanna go a bit dressier. Doesn't have to be OTT but might look a odd if you try to coord it casually. I think the shirred jsk, high waisted jsk, or the skirt is more suited for that.

>>8185524
Oof, I feel like disliking the lavender option is a bit of an unpopular opinion? I see a lot of people that like that one. The lavender almost looks a little too grey/muted to me and therefore it looks off but to each his own haha, I think because it's a bit more muted it's definitely a better choice for casual stuff like you said.

i'm currently torn between pic related and the 'poor man's moitie' gothic windows one. The bird print looks gorgeous close-up but they messed up the design placement and created the skirt using several panels of material. Despite my best attempts, I'm still the "buy whatever I want and try to scramble to put together outfits" type. In the past 3-4 years I've bought and purged my wardrobe probably 3 times, too, which doesn't help.
Right now I kind of have four separate wardrobes: a sweet, chocolate/food based one (5 main pieces, 3-4 blouses, a bolero, several pairs of tights/shoes/bags/etc. that can work with all of them); a classic one that's barely functioning (4 main pieces, one blouse, one bag, one pair of heels, and a smattering of accessories); a tiny gothic wardrobe (3 dream dresses, one blouse, one bolero, with hairpieces/accessories for all but still no shoes or a solid bag); and a more old-school sweet wardrobe (2 full sets with bags, shoes, and basic accessories that I can interchange).

I really want to improve my wardrobe building skills, but I'm terribly impulsive.

1. What's the real consensus on false lashes? I've heard conflicting advice about it. The ones I like to wear are more on the "natural" side, not the big brick o' lashes type, and I wear them on just the outer part of my eye.

I buy mostly Taobao, with some secondhand, some Bodyline and some new-from-brand purchases. As such, my spending patterns are usually saving for a few months, then blowing hundreds of dollars at a time on Taobao, with little bits of secondhand (never usually anything more than $70 plus shipping) or Bodyline (usually more shoes) or offbrand items (Restyle bags, small accessories) every month or so to break the spending monotony. The only things I've bought new from brands so far have been bags and a couple of pairs of socks. I feel like I could have kept it more under control if I had stuck to one style more, but it was the flipping from gothic to classic in jewel tones to classic in dusty pastels that got me. My gothic wardrobe was really cohesive to start with even though I wasn't just using black, with really strong accessory game in black and blue and a couple of white items that worked too, but that got confused further down the line when I threw cream, wine, gold and grey into the mix (although to be fair, most of that was just mixing items from my classic wardrobe in with the gothic ones). So far I've managed to resist including silver, purple and bright red, at least. Originally the classic wardrobe was jewel tones that all matched with gold, with black items from my gothic wardrobe mixed in, but I got tempted by too many dresses in other colour palettes and had to add cream and brown base items to the mix too.

I want to start getting into mbok and Y!J auctions, but I'm wondering about shopping services.

For a rough estimate I always add $50-60 USD, which serves me fairly well depending on the end price. if you buy something for $200 that's roughly $20 in ss fees (10% of item cost), plus $10 in domestic shipping, and another $20-$30 in EMS shipping. A good number of sites (chibitenshi for example) have estimate calculators that are insanely useful.

Main pieces. I really need to focus on accessories and shoes for a while. If I tack one or two accessories on every order and get big bodyline shoe haul I should be set for a while.

Depends on the month. I didn't get anything in January or the beginning of Feb. The last couple weeks I went a little overboard. I I got three second had jsks, a bunch of accessories, two skirts, Pre-ordered Leif's last release, paid off an Elegy order and put in a blouse and shoe order with bodyline.

I can understand inspiration, but the main creative property in lolita is coord design. Copying someone's coord is like... copying someone's handwriting. Yeah it's nothing major or copyright-infringement-worthy, but it's still just kind of off-putting.

In practice however, I don't memorize coords enough to say "You stole <lolita>'s coord!! All the way down to the rings!!" At most I'd just say "I saw something like that on Tumblr/cgl once. Looks nice in real life."

.. I know I switched points. I'm basically saying only hardcore fans of a particular person will notice you stole the idea, but it's still kind of off-putting to do in the first place.

I think it depends on the coordinate. Thicker lashes might be more suitable for OTT outfits and more extravagant events. I personally just save my falsies for those bigger events because they're a pain to deal with (weight on my lids, applying/staying/removing). As for the purple, I think that it can easily go wrong if you over-do it. Try using a lighter purple or have dual colors, pink and purple (with purple on the outside half of the lid).

>> No.8188100

Depends on what you mean by copying. If you're just taking a few ideas, eg- you're copying a colour scheme, or an idea like wearing stripes with polkadots, or flower crowns, then it's not really copying. So long as you're putting your own twist on things that's just taking inspiration, and is totally encouraged.

If you're talking about tracking down the exact same dress, exact same socks, exact same accessories, to wear in exactly the same as the girl you're copying, then that's actually a little creepy and somewhat pathetic. It stinks like you don't think you're good enough to come up with your own ideas, and the thought of someone sitting down at their computer devoting time buying all these things to match a coord they found online, instead of buying what they like or exercising their creativity, is a bit sad.

Another thing to take note is that it's always possbile for someone to accidentally make the same coord, for eg- someone came on cgl long ago saying she had the exact same hat and jsk as was worn by another more e-famous lolita, in fact, she'd bought the hat to match the jsk, and already had both in her closet by the time the other girl posted her coord. But although she used a different blouse and accessories, since the two biggest pieces were the jsk and the hat, she would end up looking pretty similar to the e-famous lolita. Even though the ideas were arrived at seperately, they could still end up looking the same. Especially in lolita where everyone buys from the same few brands. So I wouldn't automatically assume someone was copying another person just because they happen to look similar. Sometimes obvious ideas occur to many people simultaneously.

From reading the post they say they've only been invited, not committed. Seems like its up to the comm and some of the members if they choose to participate.

>>8188187
Not sure where you're getting for hire sideshow? There was no mention of payment and personally I think like another anon mentioned its a cute idea. Not all children are grubby or uncontrollable and its a nice way to leave a positive impression. Though if you're so opposed then just pass it up. I'm sure someone will take your place if the comm is as bad as your vendetta makes it out to be.

Honestly feel free to copy one by one for your personal offline wardrobe. It's just clothing, not an art form. I'd probably just not share my copied coord on the internet or bring it proudly to a meet since that seems to be more about an art contest. Even if you can get away with wearing a full brand set right from their fashion shoot but I guess that's not uncreative at all...

Does anyone have a good guide to different prints from different brands? I'm kinda sorta new to lolita and would like to know what kind of prints are available on the primary and secondary market. (and maybe something with prices, rarity, popularity etc) I have about $4000 I am planning on spending on a couple different sets.

>> No.8188301

>>8188295
Lolibrary is the best bet to give you an idea of what brands release, and which is your favorite. As far as what's available on the secondary market god only knows. Rarity, popularity, and price is just kinda something you pick up, it changes. But your best bet is to not give a fuck about what's popular and buy what you like and what flatters you best.

>> No.8188302

>>8188295
Just look at the secondary market then you know what's available. For that amount of money and with the intend to get sets you should probably buy first hand.

>> No.8188310

>>8188295
Lolibrary and sales sites. There is no guide as prices change constantly - look at sugary carnival - no longer ridiculously expensive because ott sweet is dying (or possibly dead?)
If you have $4000 this is a fantastic amount to set yourself up with a good wardrobe. What style are you getting into?

>> No.8188311

>>8188302
well, there are many popular prints out of production, I would just like to know what's available, since there might be a print I'd like better than what's currently being produced.

this looks like a decent website. I was looking over on the lolita wiki, and the info there was geared heavily for poorfags. It didn't really give me any info on what I was looking for.

I don't know yet, I'm 5' 8" tall, 25" waist, 34" bust, 35" hip. 130lb.

>> No.8188323

>>8188317
Your measurements will fit just about everything, although newer (post 2010ish) might be too big. Look out for length though, you might find that a lot of things are a bit short since they're generally sized to be knee length on 5' 2" ~ 5' 5" girls. If you figure out a style or specific dresses you like we can probably tell you more about them.

>> No.8188330

>>8188323
ok, I've felt I'm a little tall compared to most lolitas. I have a Alice and the Pirates coord I made a couple months ago and I feel the darker colors work well with me. I have American Indian blood, so my skin is darker as well. Being tall and dark I feel that darker colored dress might look best but I'm not sure.

>> No.8188337

>>8188330
AatP is awesome, half my wishlist is from them and they make up a decent chunk of my wardrobe. But don't feel like your skintone limits you to darker colors, if you want to give pastel or dusty colors a shot you can. Lolibrary sorts by brand, so you can scroll through their offerings.
If you find a particular AatP dress you love I can probably tell you rarity and price.

Yeap. Sounds like budget freebie princess sideshows. I would boycott this, personally. It'll probably keep lurking and asking questions here and there for a while more before making a decision anyway. I finished paying off my car and don't really have any expenses so I'll probably have much more disposable income in the future anyway.

There's a ton, yahoo auctions and mbok being the most popular (you do need a shopping service for these), but there are a number of other second hand stores, they should be findable through links in the sticky.

>>8188353

Just research a lot and find clothes you like. Make a folder on your computer. Put every item you would love to own into it. Every week or month go through, and if there are items you are not wanting so much anymore, put those in a secondary folder. Every second time you go through the main folder, go through the secondary folder. If you are sure you wouldn't want to own something anymore, delete it! Do not think about how items would go together, just pick what you like based purely on the item itself. After a few months you will have a good idea of your style.
Learn what goes well with your skin and undertones. Having darker skin is no reason to not wear pastels. I am just going to say that I really appreciate your acknowledging that you want to dress to suit your skin tone because often people disregard this and wear colors that make them look diseased. You just need to find the correct shades and tones. Go to a fabric store and look at how different colors make your skin look. You can ask them for samples of different shades, and check at different times throughout the day in different lighting if you are unsure.

Neither of those ideas are obligatory but it really helped me.

Going through lolibrary is an idea but overall I recommend to just lurk a lot. Go through tumblr lolita and brand tags, lolita themed blogs, egl wardrobe posts to get a feel of what is around and how it looks if it's worn. I check everything that's new on lacemarket daily. You'll just find more and more things you like, the ride never ends.

You have good taste anon. I haven't ordered from Baby before but check their US site, or get a shopping service. You really want to consider the length. This is most likely going to hit you mid thigh.

You can order from Baby directly, they've got instructions on their site. However the dress is out of stock on the website, so you'd be asking them to check for it at all their shops in Japan if you mailed them I believe. There's also Baby NYC and SF, who have their own storefronts who can special order sometimes.

>> No.8188384

>>8188376
if anon wants to, she can also look into underskirts to make some pieces appropriate lengths for her.

Also here are some other secondhand sites, these are based in japan but over oversea orders:
http://www.closetchildonlineshop.com/ (has an english guide and only ships with EMS)
http://usagiyouhinten.ocnk.net/ (Email or cart but the invoice details will be dealt with email. Variety of shipping options)
http://www.wunderwelt.jp/ (never ordered from here but cheap/damaged brand, site is a bit clunky but you can find some possible things you like)
http://www.maidenclothing.net/ (never ordered from here either but another secondhand shop)

Some brands also have english sites or ways to order overseas (ex: Maxiciman has a rakuten to order from, Infanta - a taobao brand - set up an Aliexpress for overseas customers)

Good luck building your wardrobe anon!

oh god. you seem like a rich bitch who thinks she knows whats up and is ready to look fab. Fucking lurk more. You're going to look like a hot mess with that mindset. Good personality, yes, but money aint gonna make you kawaii.

Anyway.
$4000 is a great amount to start, so advice is necessary.
Start a wishlist of items you like using lolibrary. Determine your favorite brand/s, and which you are going to ignore.

Hypothetical: Lets say you like sweet.
You'd most likely like Angelic Pretty and Baby The Stars Shine Bright, and maybe Innocent World. Maybe you'll ignore Victorian Maiden, Mary Magdalene, and Moi Meme Moitie. I'd start by looking at everything on AP's, BTSSB's, and IW's sites. Everything. Thats all they have in stock, thats all that you can buy from them.
Then, google for what their upcoming releases are. Thats whats about to be released anywhere from the next week to the next few months.

Everything else? Fair game on the second hand market.
Second hand market includes: mbok, y!ja, usagiyouhinten, fururun, lacemarket, lolita sales in english, egl comm sales, and many many more. Research on how to buy from those.

And good luck.

I buy based on season and personal preference. Sometimes I spend $4000 in one month, other months I buy nothing. My rent is 1/6 my income so a splurge is okay every now and then.

Girlonsunday is in her mid- late twenties. Her mother supports her shopping habit because her parents both have very lucrative jobs. She's fairly private because a close friend at her uni used to spread lies about her on the internet. I've never met her but a few of my friends have.
