I find adorable vintage blouses on the regular and I've been lucky enough to find a few beautiful vintage circle-skirts in the past puffy enough to fit my lolita petticoats, great "retro" finds for sure.

My favorite stuff to look at is the junk aisle, though. I have a collection of totally adorable tea cups and saucers and I haven't paid over $2 for a set.

That looks awesome, anon!

I haven't found anything I would classify as really amazing yet, but I've found lots of nice things. Blouses with peter pan collars, ruffles or nice lace details. Nice shoes for classic. A pair of old school looking platform boots. Some lovely bags, a pair gloves and many accessories - pearls, brooches, earrings, etc.

There's a handful of vintage boutiques where they're a bit more discerning with their merch than Goodwill, but there's also Goodwill and two other huge type thrift stores I can go to. All in all, my city does pretty well for thrifting and I love taking the time to shop around.

ah, I always hope that one day I'm lucky enough to find a brand main piece in a thrift shop...I know it's rare, but it's happened before. the only thing that makes me feel a bit bad about it being there in the first place is the backstory - did a lolita die and her friends and family not know what to do with the stuff, did some girl have crazy parents that took her stuff because they thought it looked childish and gave it away? wouldn't stop me from buying it, but yeah.

I think even if I found brand stuff that didn't fit me I would buy it tbh.

Which makes me pose a question for everyone else: let's say you were thrifting and found a (brand) skirt, jsk, op, etc. and it's very inexpensive ($5-$30) but it's not something you'd normally be interested in or you may not even fit. Would you salvage it for fear of going to a, well, undeserved, non-lolita home? And if so, would you then sell it on LSE, LM, EGL etc for its regular price? It would be an incredible way to make some quick cash. Buy brand for like ten bucks, sell for however much it's worth if it's still in good condition ($100-300), $profit$

I will cream myself on the day I some Lolita's mom throws out her burando and I stumble on it at the thriftstore.
So far I've found:
-a bunch of jackets that work nicely, including one that design wise looks a lot like a VM blazer, but it's dusty pink(which I have none of) and needs to be tailored to fit
-a pink lolita blouse, probably from taobao, couldn't make out the tage and the material is just a really thin cotton.
-some nice vintage blouses
-a bodyline ouji/aristo blouse
-a sailor op, was giant so I sold it for $30
-L129 in brown, I took off the shitty lace on the sleeves, if anyone wants it $20+shipping obo

Those sorts of shops are usually tucked in small streets where the only people who really know where they are are locals and people who buy and sell 'real vintage'. Also, vintage markets are a bigger thing because shop upkeep/rent on those places can just make it not worthwhile.

>> No.8173214

>>8172283
I live in the UK and we have a lot of charity shops but I rarely if ever see anything older than the 90s in them. I suspect either the older stuff got sent to recycling/Africa because it wasn't selling before the current vintage trend hit (charity shops do regular culls of stock that hasn't shifted, and they've been doing it since at least the 80s because my mum says she used to do it in the charity shop she volunteered at), or it got bought up by expensive vintage boutiques. Add to that that most charity shops are in poor areas, because councils will let empty shops to charities for cheap because it looks better than having a boarded-up shop on the high street, and that the ones in rich areas cater heavily towards selling designer stuff, you don't find much vintage unless someone old has died and their relatives donated it.

Also, charity shops here are not as cheap as thrift stores in America. Gone are the days when you could get 50p tops. Most charities now have minimum price guides that mean even a vest top is £1.99 or more, and most items are £3.99 or £4.99 ($6-8), and coats are like £10.99 or £20.99, depending on the brand. It's ridiculous because it often means charity shops charge more for second-hand Primark than Primark charges brand new. Case in point, Primark are currently selling T-shirts for £2, but the lowest the Oxfam I work in can put them out for is £2.99, because that's the minimum price for a T-shirt from a cheap brand in our pricing guide.

>> No.8173225

>>8173214
Also, decent stuff gets magnetically sucked towards shops in rich areas because at a lot of charities, on the rare chance a designer bag or whatever gets donated to a shop in a cheap area, the managers are instructed to send it to a designer specialist shop in a richer area nearby where people will pay more for it.

It all helps for the charity to make more money for poor people in other countries, but it's kinda sad that charity shops are no longer an affordable source of clothing for the poor in this country.

I have the opposite problem. I'm fairly average for lolita (but small for normalfag clothing I guess?) at a UK size 8, so a U.S. 4, and for some reason it's really fucking hard to find donated stuff in my size, even though it obviously sells in normalfag shops. A typical organized-by-colour rack might have 0-2 size 8 items, but then like 10 size 10 items. I know the average UK woman is a size 16 now, but it's still ridiculous. Recently I found a whole rack of gorgeous vintage-style cream blouses, all presumably donated by the same person, but all size 16.

Tbh, it offends me least with designer stuff that cost hundreds originally, since their price is still maybe a tenth of the original price. But when they charge 60 for a coat that was originally 100, or 7 for a top that was 10, that annoys me much more. Hearing stories about finding lolita in thrift stores always makes me so sad. Like, it's great for the person who buys it, but no lolita would bring their burando to the thrift store on purpose. Either they died, or a horrible family member stole their burando because they wanted their kid to be normal.

I've actually thought about giving Lolita clothes to a local consignment shop before because I didn't want to have to deal with trying to sell things online, so it's not completely out of the question. I ended up deciding to keep the stuff though.

Not lolita related, but I just found a beautiful knee-length pleated skirt, 100% wool for $15 at a local thrift shop. OMG, that one in the upper right looks a lot like my first sewing machine.
I was little (like, 8 years old) and my dad gave it to me. I remember it being too heavy to lift for me on my own.

And we have the metal lower part of the machine on the upper left as table in our hallway. (Got the machine replaced by a glass plate). They really make some gorgeous tables when the machine is missing/broken beyond repair.

(My parents owned a sewing machine store, so a lot of vintage machines tended to go through their hands).

All the goodwills I've been to organize by color, not size. I don't see the point to such a thing, but I guess seeing a color is easier than finding a tag and sizing it for the literal retard employees.

Went today and the guardwoman at the dressing rooms kept heckling me THREE ITEMS ONLY IN DRESSING ROOM. Still found a cute pleated skirt, blouse, and sweater-vest-thing that looked good together. More J-fashion than lolita. I've found nice sweaters there, too.

I was at a goodwill recently that didn't organize by anything.. or tag anything.. it was so crazy to me, my mom used to be the manager of a thrift store and they tag with weekly colors and organize by size so I assumed most stores did but not the goodwill. the salvation army here does weekly colors and groups them mostly by size too, I don't think it's really that hard.. maybe they hire some lazy assholes at goodwills or something?

No they don't, but since one of Goodwill's intentions is to employ people with handicaps, I wouldn't be surprised if their management purposely organized the store to make it easier for their workers. I hit up two Goodwills and another store last weekend. I just started dressing nicer and getting into fashion, so I'm definitely not on the level of a lot of people here. But I got kind of a mixed bag of stuff, pic related. I forgot to take a picture of my leggings and tights that I bought though. I really like the white skirt, although I'm used to wearing hoodies and jeans 24/7, so it was weird wearing it out the other day. I kept feeling like my ass was showing, even though my friends kept reassuring me it wasn't.

I can't wait to wear the dress too. It's adorable and perfect. I have thigh highs I want to wear with it, but I'm not sure if they'll go since they have a lace top and I'd prefer plain. But maybe black tights would look better.

I plan on hitting up more stores once I get more money. There are a lot downtown that were closed when I went out last week because I went early Sunday morning.
