Not current old school coords, but actual pictures and GLB/Snaps scans from the 2000's. Even if they're "ita", the weirder the better. Let's freak out some newfags with what AP, Baby, and the gang used to deem acceptable.

Whispers..'.it's still pretty much like that in Japan though'..

Seriously, most of the heavy rules stuff developed in the west when those seeing it for the first time wanted to lump the fashion in with Little Big Girl, sexy goth, Kinder Whore etc etc. Lolita fashion had to fight to retain its image as a unique/distinct alternative fashion and ran the risk of being bastardized beyond all recognition (at least that was the fear anyway).

This is so nostalgic for me. I got into Lolita when i was in my early teens and never had the money for it but was really inspired by Kana and tried to be cute anyway without being lolita. Years later i got old enough where I got a job, bought lots of brand, wore it, and realized that by the time i actually got to do it, it wasn't the same thing anymore. And now, here I am, selling all my brand and realizing that I'll never really get to dress lolita like I'd always dreamed as old school pieces are too hard to come by and even if I wore them like they showed in the GLBs, now I don't even have the community on my side to back me up because most recognize it as ita. First world problems I know but it's really disheartening to finally try something you've waited years to do and realize you caught up to it too slow. This must be the feeling young classic rock fans feel.

I know I'm being a pedantic bastard but, not quite anon, the pic you posted whilst somewhat sweet would still have been considered leaning slightly towards the gothic. Sweet used to look more like pic related but didn't get much air time (especially in the west) after the gothic lolita look started to emerge and gained in popularity. People seem to forget that slightly ropey/frumpy looking sweet and even punkish lolita looks were around before before 'gothic lolita' and their origins were in part, connected to otome (especially pink house) and natural-kei styles plus a whole bunch of musicians/artists.

I'm the one who said I didn't like the coord, and I'm not the one who just gave the "no." response.

I did make a mistake on the lace, since I couldn't see it well from my phone. I thought it was the more modern net-looking stuff and not the crochet, but that still doesn't save this coord. That headdress is a sad excuse for an accessory even with simpler older standards, and it all looks seriously lazy. Like sure, it can align with superficial spoken standards, but in the end it misses the mark and is just someone crying WAH NOTICE ME by posting something that is incredibly underwhelming and not what was requested.

The comment "this is what sweet used to look like..." refers to both >>8159786 and >>8159788 being Baby, The Stars Shine Bright, which I've always known as a sweet lolita brand. Most of the designs would have no quarrel being labeled sweet if it were the pink colourway.

Kinda a shock seeing the whole two pages being bxw (and as you say leaning towards gothic), but there's no arguing that it is indeed BTSSB. Hence the three ellipses. Even I'm not sure what to make of it.

I am in the same situation as you OP, I got into Lolita when I was in my early teens right before things just started changing into the OOT sweet trend. I was completely in love with the simple print-less sweet style of the day and the old school styles that weren't that old at the time. It was the fairy tale maiden look and attitude that really drew me in. I wasn't able to get any Lolita clothes until the year after I graduated school and since then I only accumulated a couple of dresses, all of them being modern prints. Turns out I hate prints on myself and don't feel the love for the dresses I have that I did for the dresses I used to dream about. Modern Lolita is cute on other people but it isn't the style that I loved and it doesn't suit me. I want to try getting a few old school dresses and try to make a wardrobe in a style I REALLY love, but now I feel like it's "too late" and I know that's super dumb and I don't really understand why I feel that way, maybe it's because I don't have the time or chances to wear crazy clothes anymore like I did when I was younger. I really hope the old school styles and attitudes make a comeback, damn I missed it so much. My life during school was awful and it was Lolita that really kept me going.

I'm the anon who posted that picture and it's totally not a self-post. I just did a google-search for old school lolita, but I didn't look into when the file was made. I do recognize the lolita though, but only because of the bathroom -kek -- so yeah, I'm sorry for cheating a little instead of finding an actual outfit from pre-radioactive cupcake sweet lolita like OP wanted. I just thought that the elements looked cute together. If it were really from a while ago, the petticoat would at least be less fuller.

I've been involved in lolita since there used to be a myspace group for the fashion. If you want to let your bloomers get in a bunch, at least contribute.

I miss old school so much it hurts. I just can't get into modern Lolita at all and I love the more simple and haphazard look of old school. That rebellious but feminine look outfits had. The gothic brands were/are Moitie, Kazuko Ogawa, Atelier Pierrot, Atelier Boz, Arachnophobia, etc. They even had seperate make-up tutorials for sweet lolita (usually just named lolita) vs gothic and Baby was always just lolita. If it was in black and white you'd think it was sweet because you can't tell it's black (which does not make anything gothic by any means).

is what early (sweet) lolita looked like and yes, there is some cross over/grey area with otome; the otome 'maiden' look also existed before the fully formed lolita look emerged. No fashion emerges fully formed from some kinda ultimate lace filled primordial soup, it develops, it evolves - of course there are going to be shades of grey before it becomes more distinctive.

a lot of 'lolita' coords in the 90's were made from handmade clothing and partially brand items and looked generally doll-like and frilly/cute.
lolita was a much larger category at the time and items from jane marple and emily temple cute were used in lolita coords really often. all of the girls in >>8159875 are wearing lolita.
the style also did not have the same shape that it has today. this was only starting to develop in the late 90's, early 2000's and as it changed, the more casual looks were placed in the otome category, which is fairly new and a more casual alternative to lolita.

Chill out, girlfriend, I just pointed out the dates they were established, I'm not the anon that was arguing the previous thread of comments, and you're working up your own anger at nothing important.

I was actually hoping for someone to chime in with better info on why otome brands were founded in 1980s but were not otome, and why they're now so completely otome that they're located on a different floor in La Foret and will deny being a lolita brand, and whether it has anything to do with the arrest of some pedophile that overnight turned lolicon into something much darker (even in Japan).

> whether it has anything to do with the arrest of some pedophile that overnight turned lolicon into something much darker (even in Japan).
Source/info/etc I'm insanely curious...

>> No.8163938

>>8163877

That's the problem, I really can't remember the details. All I recall is that some guy (male) got arrested for....something pedophilia related. I think he legit kidnapped somebody's kid and did who knows what. When the police raided the perp's house apparently his room looked like a typical otaku's room: anime, manga and merch stuffed to the brim.

Before that, it was apparently okay to say you liked little girls or admit to lolicon weakness or whatevs, but when the case broke almost overnight it became taboo to admit it anymore.

The case is so generic, searching anything only brings up generic "does Japan like lolicon" rubbish articles.

One other detail I remember. Some other Japanese guy saw the case on tv and thought to himself, oh my god that looks like my room and then his mother turned around and said, oh my god, that looks like your room. So then he went out and make two figurines. One is a naked chick skipping rope with milk from her breasts, and the other is a dude... the details elude my memory. Both of these figurines became semi-famous (like, not van gogh famous, just a little famous). But I can't remember the names of the figures or the artist either.

Anyway, since this case seemed to have made a deep impression for the Japanese, I always wondered whether this is where some of the styles parted ways, with a few brands abandoning the lolita name and pursuing completely different aesthetics. That would explain so much, but I have nothing to back this up with other than "hey, both these things happened somewhere in the past". That's all. Nothing concrete to actually contribute to the old school discussion.

I might have derailed the thread. Sorry. Polite sage for OT.

A lot of the appeal of oldschool doesn't fit into the way the Western scene and their meetups work. You can't copy a sincere street fashion picture of a girl who's just wearing big chunky boots and a suitcase because she likes them and didn't care much about the way it fit - and turn up like that to a tea party. Then it's just a costume, like dressing up as a punk on halloween.

So, wait not to sound like a noob and I'm not trying to pick an argument but I'm just wondering what you mean, wearing clothes just because you like them even if they don't match is considered more costumy then current Lolita trends in the west? Or are you saying that it's costumy to try to copy street fashion? I dunno I'm kinda confused about what you mean because all Lolita is costumy looking compared to normal clothes. Or do you mean the fact that lolitas in the west don't wear street fashion as a street fashion, that it would be strange?

Personally I'd rock old school at a tea party, but I'm really laid back about the fashion and fashion in general, where a lot of lolitas seem to take it more serious.

Random Kera pictures floating around the net were my first inspirations of dressing 'differently', even when the cringing early emo scene was emerging at the exact same time (I live in Europe). So being a poor student, I tried to do both, and failed pretty hard lol. The punk and sweet lolita looks were my favourite, always tried to re-use emo clothes for Japanese punk. Nope. My god it's so embarassing to even write about it now.

Then when I had a little bit of extra money, AP was da shit. Prints prints and more prints. Same silloutte as non-print dresses but as a weak minded teen, the community and others' opinions made me feel like I HAVE to get printed dresses, otherwise I'll look like a poor man's version of sweet lolita, and yeah I feel the same as you now. Have a job, but the fashion and its people are so different. But I'm going to slowly buy the old school pieces that I liked back then, and sneak them into casual everyday coords so I can feel all nostalgic and happy when going to work!

The sculptures you're thinking of are by the pop artist Takashi Murakami. They're life size though, not small figurines, although maybe figurines were made of them. Anon, it's exactly as you say -- OTT is for special events like brand parties, conventions, specific photoshoots, and so on.

For regular meetups though? My comm entirely shows up in regular lolita. No madonna crowns or ships in hair business. We dress to the occassion: lighter dresses for summer, crew socks and simpler dresses for picnics, fancy dresses if it's a tea party at a posh place, nothing big on heads if we're watching a show/movie. It's not like there aren't photos of regular tea parties with members in regular lolita out there, we can't really help it if the only photos tumblr likes to reblog are the OTT ones, or the only ones you want to look at are the OTT ones.

OTT is not the reason old school phased out. Prints are.
