Well /cgl/ I come to you with a few questions about what is considered "appropriate" or "tasteful" regarding race and skin when it comes to cosplay.

To put it simply, several of my girlfriends and I really want to do a Disney group some time this year. My absolute FAVOURITE Disney characters are Esmerelda and Pocahontas. However, I AM WHITER THAN WONDERBREAD.

What would be the best way to go about cosplaying either of these women in a tasteful, non-offensive way? Am I likely to get a bunch of SJWs and the Tumblr brigade jumping on my back and shitting down my throat for cultural appropriation or "blackfacing" or being racist? Would I draw anger or ire if I tanned in any way (bronzer, self-tanner, sunbathing?)

Is there a right way? A wrong way? Or is the whole thing more trouble than it's worth?

>> No.8140878

why would you go out of your way to cosplay something not your skin tone when you are very light?

are you unhappy with the thousands of choices of characters that you do fit the bill for?

If you don't want to be distasteful, get a tan, or don't do it at all. I don't give a shit at this point I'm tired of these fucking threads.

This. You shouldn't care about offending people with glass sensibilities.

What you SHOULD care about is if it will look good or not. If you can find a way to achieve a character-accurate skin-tone without it looking shit, you're fine.

>> No.8140886

Tumblr will shit all over you. /cgl/ won't care as long as you aren't fat.

If you're really whiter than wonderbread, you'll never dark enough for Esmerelda or Pocahontas. You'll max out at John Boehner orange and look stupid.

you can cosplay outside of your race, otherwise 90% of western anime cosplay would be considered mega racist. Painting your skin so you look like you had an accident and smeared it all over yourself is racist.

Just go ahead and cosplay without coloring yourself. I'm black, and I don't put white powder or anything when I cosplay light-skinned characters, so I think it's stupid when a light person does the opposite. Just be sure to pick a wig that fits your skin tone.
>and smearing brown paint on yourself always looks shitty, pun intended.

>> No.8140914

Race isn't a costume.

Darkening your skin is not necessary to cosplay a character who is drawn with dark skin.

Think about it, brown/black cosplayers aren't baby powdering up their faces to look like white/asian charecters.

Sailor Moon looks like Sailor Moon because of the signature hairstyle and iconic fuku.

You would still look like Pocahontas or Esmerelda by wearing their costume. That's all you need.

>> No.8140925

Your options are basically to either not change your skin tone; like others have said, it's not like black women wear powder to look lighter, so you don't need to darken you skin. Or you can do it so well that no one knows it's fake, but honestly that's pretty difficult to achieve.

Offending someone will most likely happen if you tan up. Unfortunately it will be unavoidable. However if you have the capability to tan, and want to enhance it, remember that you can use a foundation and a colored concealer to tone down the "fake" color of it. There are great charts online about what different color concealers/primers/etc can help with. I wish you luck OP! I will post some links for makeup tricks that could help.

It's dark enough to look like I have a nice, natural darker skin tone, which keeps the SJWs at bay (can't get angry at a white girl for having a fucking tan), but didn't have to damage my skin to get it tan!

I have an honest question for you because I've never been able to wrap my head around this. Let's agree for the sake of argument that any degree of skin darkening with makeup is a nono. If a white girl decides to cosplay a black character but doesn't change her skin tone except for natural tanning, why does this still offend you? She's not blackfacing, she's not "pretending to be black when she can just wash it off" - she's just paying homage to a black character that she likes while still being white, similar to POC people who cosplay white characters without lightening their skintone.

This is a headscratcher for me, especially when the only explanation I ever see is anger over not getting as much attention as the white chicks like >>8141333 (which is kind of surprising since tumblr and FB regularly creme themselves over POC cosplayers)

And 99% of other cosplayers, including Black people, are dressing as Japanese people, who were thrown in internment camps in the USA. But somehow it doesn't matter for them?

I have yet to meet a white girl who passes as a black woman in cosplay. Even if you're trying to be 'muh oppression' about this, they don't even have black lack of privilege because they don't pass.

All of this is centered in you trying to deny rights to people different than you out of some kneejerk possessiveness over characters that aren't yours to begin with. When instead you could be uplifting yourself and growing past it as a person.

I'm latina and there are maybe 5 latina anime characters and I don't give a fuck about white chicks cosplaying them because those fictional characters are not mine. They're not stealing them from me. They're not trying to be latina, they're trying to be Honey Lemon or some shit.

Go ahead and do Esmeralda and/or Pocahontas, but for the love of the cosplay gods, please don't use a fake tan or super-dark foundation/makeup. 99% of the time it looks extraordinarily bad (because people pick a poor shade or don't contour and end up with botox face), and the other 1% of the time I'm side-eyeing it hard. Go a shade darker in foundation if it helps your skin match the clothing color palette better, but don't go orange or brown. A natural tan would look nice, but I wouldn't advise it - treat your skin well and don't subject yourself to unnecessary wrinkles or cancer!

There are probably already comments in this thread about the historical/social context of treating darker skin tones like a costume (I kind of skimmed it because the thread title threatens a minefield). Accept your whiteness, accept that you'll get negative comments (especially if you choose to wear Pocahontas, because of the genocidal consequences of white people coming to the Americas). It'd probably be good to mentally prepare yourself for cosplaying the character -- come up with the reasons why you love her so much, an understanding of the historical racism that she faces in her story (Esmeralda as a Romani gypsy, Pocahontas as a native), and be prepared to deal calmly with possible vitriol from people who disagree with the implication of a white girl wearing a non-white costume. (I don't think the last would be too likely; I would like to believe that people tend to avoid public confrontation)

It's good that you're already self-aware of the issues in cosplaying a dark-skinned character as a light-skinned person. I appreciate that.

That's fine, but you really shouldn't not cosplay something because someone else gets more attention. Cosplaying is about dressing up as a character you like, it shouldn't stop anyone from cosplaying any character.
As like as they aren't doing actual blackface with shoe polish and giant red lips and mocking black people it should be fine.
If it still bothers you, you can at least think what most people are, "Wow they look like shit" just due to the fact most people can't use make-up for shit.

I don't get this whole "stealing characters". It's not like after they cosplay the character it makes it off limits to anyone else from cosplaying it.

Who gives a shit. Black people cosplay white as fuck anime characters and that's fine, because the cool thing about cosplay is dressing as the characters you like, body shape and skin tone be damned.

The SJWs whining and pouting about white people cosplaying things they like but giving the a-ok when it's a black person doing it is shallow and hypocrite as fuck. You're the ones making a race issue.

My friend's favorite Disney princess is Tiana and she is very white. Sadly i dont think should could ever cosplay her, even if she wanted to because all of thus bullshit. And she wouldnt darken her skin or anything, just be the character she loves.

It is so hypocritical that people who lighten their skins for cosplays (like white people for anime characters) start bitching about this when if you go the other way that it is horrible. Example, i am olive skinned and look horrible in any wig lighter than brown. Bought a blonde wig, need to lighten skin in pinker tones to wear = ok. But if i wanted to wear korra and wear make up a couple shades darker im evil and black face. Pretty much you cant win.

The fact that you can't even entertain the idea that they could be black is kinda...Even if you never heard them speak or act (as that doesn't define what race someone would be) why couldn't they be?
What about them makes you feel that way?

Idk why people are coloring themselves for different races, it looks weird.
