I disagree actually. He carved the print in lino and painted the whole pattern by hand matching the placement of every print, plus resin cast the necklace and belt buckle pretty much identically too. And carved the snakeskin belt and dyed / painted it the same as the original . And sculpted and made the dagger in resin. Hell, with the necklace he matched the number of links on all of the chains. There's even these little grip things on the sleeves of the undershirt that I wouldn't have even noticed. I've followed this build really closely and to give credit where it's due, the details are really good when observed closely, if not overly flashy at a passing glance.
Given that he'll be able to show all that off in his session with the judges, I think he could do well.

Alright, Ross is the king of drag but a while ago kick off a fuss about the whole using makeup to change skin colour thing, and made a few racist/stupid comments, then quickly changed his tune when people got mad at him.
He's good at sewing though and makeup so his Ursula will floor Andy.

Helen Alice is good friends with Tascha, she's the one who made the Lutece costumes. She was in the LSCC final last year as Elsa. She seems to be very good with sewing but not much else. Hangs around with the circle jerk quite a lot and Laura B, so she's always in drama.

Beyond Believing makes a lot of things but seems to be very quite and drama free. Only recently heard of her, but it seems she knows everyone and to do a lot of costumes. Recently did a group with Keala I think.

Who else shall we talk about?

All of this is the sort of stuff any other cosplayer would do for a competition costume. They just don't broadcast it as much as he has. I mean, kudos to him for a huge improvement from his crappy satin pants and ratty wig but it's nothing amazing in the world of competitive cosplay.

The costume and accessories are nice, he's just blown all of the little details out of proportion and made mountains out of molehills for a lot of it which makes it seem far more amazing than it actually is. Most cosplayers analyse things privately and then post tidbits publically, so the whole thing seems more spectacular when finished, where Valentine has just splurged everything on his page.

Not that it's a bad thing though. I don't like the guy but I think it's made him a little more humble at least.

Because it's true. For years it's been the same two names becuase nobody who is good enough steps up to the international level. Most good cosplayers are seen at one, maybe two events, and either don't enter anything or enter one thing at most. Out of the people who do regularly enter and are willing to push forward to that international level, only Lex and Sands have been consistently good enough to make an impact and stick around.

If you want to see that change and if you want there to be anyone in the UK worthwhile once those two are gone, you gotta improve your own game and enter yourself. Complaining that the same two people are the only ones people praise isn't going to stop people praising them and it's not going to make other, better people magically appear.

In comparison to what you would see in Game of Thrones I can confirm some points in relation to the pic.

>He is not the actual actor (obvious).
>Game of Thrones uses motion lighting (editing of the video footage in simpler terms for lighting) and that pic does not use such editing or any clear editing at all.
>actual costume in Game of Throne is darker in colours and makes use of gold coloured threadings in certain parts.
>the brown/grey collar parts of the tunic and main coat from valentine's costume actually have a reptilian hide texture on the actual costume from Game of Thrones (material doesn't appear to be hide though).
>the collar parts (grey/brown) of the tunic are actually a bit more thicker and make the main coat look less open in comparison to the real costume from Game of Thrones.

If you want a laugh, Kelly Jean's trying to stream on Twitch for 24 hours and is growing increasingly batshit, more so than usual.

Of course she absolutely doesn't want you to look at her tits and does not understand why everybody won't shut up about them.

Does she even get called in as a guest any more or have the conventions wised up to her antics? She's still BFFs with Nigri, right?

F&C is just a standard tog, nothing special, but at least they shoot anyone.

Q of W is a friend with Lucas, so he hangs around him and when Lucas gets a shoot with someone at a Conventions he leeches on.

That's gonna change now Lucas has dropped SCG and his reputation has taken an even bigger downturn since he began shittalking everyone. Even his stalwart Stacey and Chloe are moving on to other togs. People only gave Lucas the time of day because he put in some seed money to build a platform for easy promotion and now he's on his own he's worthless to everybody. This time next year he'll be nothing but an urban myth.

Food & Cosplay are a who cares case. You don't see their stuff come up that often I feel and it's neither bad nor good enough enough to cause a stir. I'll be surprised if you notice them much at all this year.

Queens of Winn are entirely video focused these days and they've not been getting around as much as Sneaky Zebra. They may as well be dead.

Shades On Productions are who I expect to see come up most often this year. Getting many more cosplayers on board and throwing much more money in than anyone else. I want to see them do less location and more studio, though.

I'm also expecting Seb to turn up more. Now he's not pussywhipped by KJ it looks like he's hanging with way more varied cosplayers. Opposite to Shades On I want to see him do more on location since he's done studio to death.

Sonesh looks like he'll be holding steady, should grow a little. He's done consistently good work the last couple of years. I don't expect to see any change with him other than a little growth so if you're tired of seeing his name pop up already you're gonna be in for a rough year.

Sneaky Zebra look like they will still be the go-to video guys for the foreseeable future. I agree with many people that their style is very generic but they are the best example of it.

>Opposite to Shades On I want to see him do more on location since he's done studio to death.

So which one is it? But thats the whole point, its a convention video, won't be much of a convention video if it was shoot in a studio??

SZ will always be generic, just like the formula for music, same repetitions. The only difference is who they have in their video, but end of the day its just footage over music, year after year. It works for them, if they change, they could potentially lose followers because thats why people follow them, but at the same time, people could lose interest if they don't do anything different. Theyre at the damn if you do, damn if you don't.

As for Lucas, he dropped the SCG brand because he fucked it all up and he doesn't want himself to be associated with it no longer, but the thing is, everyone knows his name, so it really doesn't make that much of a difference, so what hes trying to do now is look into other revenues where hes not well known for being a cunt, e.g artists work into photos, gym and fitness shoots. But hes still holding onto the cosplay scene with dear life because thats the only place he even has a chance to get models to do his bidding without paying.

Theres so many CMV out there, tbh, every style has probably been done before by someone, but just nice to a style not done to death makes a change. For me as long as there are different styles then that way i know what to expect from each videographer. If they all do the same panning, slow-mo, pan out then whats the point. This goes the same for cosplay photography, how boring would it be if every photographer you look has the same 'look' to it, that will get boring pretty fast. Shades on Kyle is just loud, so can come across in the wrong way thats all. But you need to control what you post, posting something to everyone and then deleting makes you look bad. Fair do's for the focus, the larger image does show the focus looks on.

Studios don't cost much to rent. Like £70 for half a day? Some studios will even let you rent them for just an hour or two and then you're looking at like £20-30. You don't want to be renting them all the time but once every blue moon isn't going to bankrupt anybody and variety is nice and studios show you can do more than sit your camera in Av at the widest aperture.

I don't think natural light is more challenging in any way. Natural light is way more brainless than trying to balance and make something striking with studio strobes which is why I said I'd like to see you go to a studio for once. Show that you can get the job done without using the oldest and most tried-and-tested methods in history.

And I gotta say if you're going to stick to working outdoors so much you should stop your lens down. There's no point going to nice locations if you're gonna blow them out at 2.8. For framing like that a 105 lens is only going to make the scene look flat. Get something in the 21-35mm range, stop down to 5.6 or 8 and you'll get way more out of your locations.

The ego bit you answered yourself with your response to >>8139588. You're good, you're one of the better ones, I said as much in my original post. But you flare up and there's no good reason. Stay calm, recognise you have faults, recognise everyone is going to have opinions and some of those opinions will not be the same as yours. Any other reaction screams egotistical dickwad.

The studio is still a personal cost that I can't really justify as a Shades On expense, It would be mainly as a, lets see what we can do here!

But you're right, A little bit of studio work never hurt nobody, certainly something I should invest in.

Natural light has its challenges the same as studio work, The recent shoot was up in the peak districts, cloudy day, chaotic weather, thinking on the spot and working around that, thats where the fun comes from.

Mainly, the 105mm lens was used due to the local, the photo does not give good depth and I agree, but we were up on a mountain that was incredibly windy, both of us standing up on that ledge was going to be dangerous.

I am looking to purchase a mid range lens, I mainly work with the 50mm 1.2 and I just adore it to pieces, Planning to take some cosplayers to more locations in the summer and i'll be hiring some new lenses specifically to use the location to my advantage.

Yeah, it's difficult, in any situation it's hard to sit back and have people slate on your work, alot of people forget the hours invested in cosplays / photos / video edits.

We spend numerous hours talking over music and shot choices before the con itself.
But I also think atleast engaging with people can lead to a more positive result.

The final point, which you responded too. Is mainly from first hand accounts, Im not justifying being cocky, im simply saying it's better to be a little loud, friendly, approachable and confident in yourself so the cosplayer can be reassured they're working with someone who can produce something they will both enjoy.

Top props for a honest and solid response sir.

As a creative person that should be the thing you look for most and deal with most often. Nobody in any arts ever got anywhere by ignoring criticism. In fact most videographers and photographers will tell you that the only way anybody ever gets anywhere is by showing their work to others and taking on board every comment anybody makes.

I don't mean like if someone just screams at you you're a shitlord you should thank them, but you gotta be able to take it when someone says they don't like something about your work and here's why.

Not necessary, because if its dull and you don't have extra flashs with you to light your subject than image will look flat and have no contrast. The other problem would be someone would have to be there to be holding the flash (on stand), as Kyle has said, it was windy, not the best time to have flash on a stand etc. I presume shooting in the district you would want to travel light than carry shitton of equipment with you.

Valentine can’t be too upset with Tabby – there was a selfie of them together when they judged a small con last year.

I don’t think anyone should be too hard on Andy after LSCC last year; it was his first con and he’s obviously talented and realises that he’s talented. He changed his ways since. You can’t come into a con the size of LSCC as a virgin cosplayer and expect to win it. Tabby entered the competition at LSCC the way before and didn’t come anywhere near top of the list.

The problem with the likes of Valentine and Tabby though is they’re handed guest spots at small cons on a plate and so they expect too much too soon. At least Andy’s still entering competitions. Tabby does cosplay purely to make money for her dad’s business and to a smaller extent, for herself. I’m sure she enjoys cosplay but she’s not interested in paying her dues and it doesn’t help when con organisers refer to her as a ‘cosplay superstar’ or ‘The UK’s Queen of Cosplay’. Deep down, she probably knows she’s not close to being the best out there but I don’t think she cares. She’s at the point now where she’ll only go to cons to flog her merchandise or if she’s been awarded a guest or judge spot. You’d think not being invited back to LSCC to judge would be a reality check but it’s just more opportunity to hawk her soft-porn Red Sonia prints.

>> No.8141980

I think Tabby would be happy if she could live off the proceeds from photoshoots and merchandise and avoid cons altogether. She’s grown arrogant because she’s surrounded by so many yes-men on social media and any criticism of her, however valid, gets thrown out the window as trolling. Truth is that Tabby only does cosplay because she can’t make it as a ‘proper’ model. Real talk.

That attitude unfortunately rubs off on others around her. There’s another cosplayer who’s very good friends with Tabby and who also has virtually no experience in cosplay competitions. She’s a lovely girl overall but she pretty much expects to be handed guest spots at cons now. I was the cosplay judge at a small con where she asked the organisers if she could be a guest and when they said ‘no’, she had a strop and refused to go to the con, saying that she deserved better simply because she’d been a guest at a couple of very, very minor cons. I guess the issue is that there are so many cons now of all shapes and sizes.

There's no deep down about it, Tabs has never claimed that she is any of the things the conventions hype her to be and she's often said online and at panels that she'd be lost without her dad and she's just in this for a lark.

She's been a huge suck-up to Lex and Laura for years and she's friends with one of the Sony people that sponsers most of the competitions. In turn she's semi-friendly with the standard circlejerk. I've spoken with Valentine about guest slots before. He said that after a few cons he got asked to be one, so obviously jumped at the chance to do it at he thought it was a big deal (he was still relatively new at this point), and to be honest I think a lot of people would do the same. Once you're in that "circle" of invitees, it's easy to keep getting asked back, and given they get tickets, hotels and travel covered, I'm not surprised they keep doing it. That said, he's told me he's turned down all guest slots for this year as he wants to concentrate on making stuff and enjoying the con rather than being tied down to a table and a con timetable, which I think is the right choice for him.

I'm not sure who in their right mind would list being on an awful TV dating show as 'acting' experience.

It might just be low image quality, but i dunno ot looks like there's some choppy slimming down done on parts of her legs. If it is that, it's really sloppy work.

The masquerade was so sad last year. Good cosplayers but the girl running it was the most annoying thing ever. She wouldnt' let us stop clapping for even a minute.

Clap as they come on, clap as they pose, clap as they leave, clap as she reads out the next one, clap as they come on...

It was no wonder the audience eventually just gave up.

A wide aperture for sure, but it's the position of the depth of field that is weird. It's not one flat plane.

Maybe they'd be better to actually have someone to MC that knows what they're doing then.
