In my opinion if it's clear what realistic style some part of a character design is supposed to translate to in real life, go for that. I think with Nui it's obviously supposed to be something like what you posted. With stuff like Yugi from Yugioh it's less obvious and probably looks better if literally translated to costume.

I think the cartoon version wig is harder to make it look good, like with >>8134699 you can see the hair going in illogical directions, the padding under her hair is almost showing through, and there's a lot of stray hair that kind of emphasises how much the rest of her drills are held together by glue. And that's a pretty good wig. The bad ones are outright disasters.

As for the dress, I don't think going with a natural wig means you need to go with a normal ruffle dress, on the other hand, it would definitely look weird if you went with the cartoony wig and then deviated from her cartoon drawing for the dress.

So yeah, natural wig seems to be the easier option, and gives you wider options.

But damn, I'm just noticing that now too. I think Junketsu's underboob support kind of passes as a semi-bra to go with the semi-panties, and that piece of armour also breaks up an otherwise bare expanse of skin. Kisaragi Ryuko is missing that and her boob pieces are a lot more form-fitting and not so bulky armour, so she's basically nude from nipple to thigh-highs (minus the panty front).

Have you seen cheap drag ones, makeup doesn't apply well to them because they are basically vacuum sealed bags of coloured silicone that matches literally no skin colour. makeup just doesn't hold up on the surface.

Given the choice I would go for these foam ones over the cheap drag ones for this costume.

Even with high quality ($500-$1000) drag ones these do beat them out because their rigidness makes it easier to defeat gravity.

For other costumes yeah cheap drag might be great out, but in this particular case short of implants (inserted via the nipple, belly button or armpit. Not crease) nothing can get as good as a look as these fake foam balls. even if they aren't great

Pretty sure that's from a porno. So it's not shocking they didn't use a great wig and weren't concerned about her makeup being accurate to the character.
