So long as you don't compete with it or claim it as your own, no harm no foul.

Heck a lot of commissioners wouldn't be able to make their own work if it weren't for people funding them by getting stuff made.

I want to cosplay at my first con in a few months, and I've found an outfit I was considering purchasing (from cosplayfu) but my size measurements don't match at all.
My measurements: 35/33/37
Theirs (size L): 34.6/26.7/36.2

Should I just not even consider it with such a large dispairity in the waist? They also have an XL with 36.2/29.1/37.7 but I have a small bust and I don't want it to look baggy and weird, and still the waist is too small. I would really like to cosplay but maybe I'm just too "big" for a premade costume...what should I do?

Hope this is the right spot for this, sorry if it's not.

Gonna ask this in the new thread since the old one didn't get any helpful replies.

Me and my group are doing Meepo from Dota 2 and I've basically now got all the costumes done. My only issue is I still can't figure out how to go about the head in the proper way.

I have a bald cap I would like to use as a base and craft foam ears made to attach as well. but I'm afraid sewing through it will just render it into useless bits of plastic. I however feel like gluing it would not stay as well as I would like (in regards to attaching both the ears and faux fur).

Or would it?

Any tips or tutorial recommendations for making the head/ears part?

I'm not making a fursuit head, anon but thank for the link anyway.
Meepo doesn't have a big comical head like a fursuit/mascot head would give.
He's got human-like proportions save the bottom half.

What I'm going to do is make sort of a fur cap (think Toothiana from Rise of the Guardians and how cosplayers of that character do her headpiece with the feathers going down the nose, etc.) that will cover the entirety of my head/face minus the eyes and tip of nose obviously.

I've tried looking into Toothiana cosplay tutorials for the head but since it is feathers these people are working with, it doesn't help me much being that feathers are quite different from what i'm working with.

I am making Annie right now, and I use a stretch velvet for the blouse and skirt, gold pleather for the gold, a matte satin for the purple and organza for the ruffles on her skirt. I don't know if I recommend them, they are hard to work with, especially the velvet, and the result gives off a more fancy little girl's dress vibe. There is a Creamy Mami doll that has a longer skirt with higher ruffles that looks good so I'm not sure if I should just go with that instead of figuring anime physics. That and I'm wanting to not use any more money on this since I've been using the stuff I already have.

Your skirt is too long and it needs support higher up at the waist seam to hold it up (e.g. a layer of tulle, stiff interfacing or wire frame that extends from above the waist seam to below it), as well as possibly needing to be drafted as a 2-circle skirt.

Follow the instructions that come with your zipper. They're pretty straightforward and don't be afraid to practice on scrap fabric first. You'll need the proper sewing machine zipper foot as well. Also recommend using an invisible zipper with pleated skirts.

What fabric are you using for the skirt? Most polyester/cotton fabrics won't need starch but just a quick pressing between wears to hold the pleats.

Take the skirt you have and the pattern you used for it, cut out at least one more of the exact skirt (if not two more), combine these with the one you already have and make a super-circle-skirt. Horsehair it and waistband it and you're good! You might adjust the length of the skirt and make it a bit shorter, but be the judge for that because what are anime proportions.

I wouldn't recommend it. Acetate isn't really durable. It has terrible abrasion resistance so any time your wings rubbed anything it would wear down really quickly. It also is hard to take wrinkles out of depending on what kind you get (some finishes help prevent that stuff). It does, however, keep shape well when heat set.

It's an okay cheap option, but I'd be afraid of it rubbing against stuff like seats, people in crowded areas, etc. and getting worn down quickly.

So are you looking to make a zipperless pleated skirt?

If it's knife-pleated skirt, what you can do instead is make the skirt as if it had a zipper, but finish the hems where you would normally install a zipper. Then make a button hole in the waistband, and sew on a button and set of skirt hook & eyes on the other end of the waistband. When the waistband is closed, the gap between the hems will be hidden in an inward fold of the knife pleat and should not show.

If it's a box-pleated skirt, I don't think there's really any way to do it. You can try a stretchy fabric, but that's not something recommended for beginners to work with and it's even hard to hold pleats. Having an elasticized waistband might work, but it also creates a lot of bulk and scrunched-up pleats at your waist.

I need some advice on how to make 2 props from NGE, pic related. I've never made props before so I apologize for my long post and will appreciate any help!

1- DSS Choker. The official is made from some sort of leather, but in the series it looks more metallic. I figured red plexiglass would work for the front part, but I'm really not sure what to use for the actual choker part since I'm not crazy with the leather look. It would also be cool if it was adjustable for different neck sizes.

2- Lance of Longinus.
I figure I'll use a wooden dowel for the bottom, but I have no idea for the top or how to create that structure without it being flimsy or breaking easily.
I'd like these to be sturdy but also con safe if possible, thanks!

Balsa is very lightweight and can be cheap. Knives can be used to cut them if they are thin enough.

MDF(medium density fiberboard) is really cheap if you look around locally. They are very easy to sand and shape given their lack of grain. The lack of grain also gives it a smooth finish although you will have to avoid exposing it to moisture since it will deteriorate as a result. Note that mdf often releases formaldehyde when sanding or cutting it so please exercise caution.

Poplar is great for imitating blades as it has a small grain that looks smooth.

i would recommend organza. It is sheer and soft but has more body than chiffon and i believe would lend itself better to create that bell shape you want. if you really want to use cotton.. you can use cotton voile, which is a very lightweight cotton which can have a sheer quality to it as well.

Probably a silly question, but I'm having to ombre dye some cotton fabric. The last time I dyed something cotton, it shrank horribly. I'm pretty new to dying things in general, and my first attempt was the one that shrank. I did prewash. But I washed it in cold water because it was cotton. But it still shrank. Granted, I dyed the garment before I sewed it together, and since this is only being dyed at the bottom, I'm probably going to have to dye it after it's sewn together, or the pieces themselves. So I'm guessing I should wash it in warm water first, so if it's going to shrink, it does it before hand? Sorry for rambling. Just trying to make sure I cover everything.

Have you gone to conventions before? Being in cosplay at a convention is basically like going to the convention as a normal attendee, only you're dressed up. You still can hang out in the public areas (like the lobby, some hallways, outdoors), you attend panels, browse through the artist's alley/vendor's booths, meet up with friends or make new ones.

When you're in cosplay, a few extra things:
>people may stop you to ask if they can take a picture, if they recognise your character and like your outfit
>people who are cosplaying from the same source material might end up hanging out with you for a long period of time because you both have a demonstrated interest in the same thing, and pictures are cooler with more than one person
>if your cosplay has big parts - like an unwieldy prop or wings or a long trailing hem - you need to be constantly aware of where those parts are relative to people around you, so as not to damage your cosplay or other congoers

Ace tape if worn too long can cause damage, breathing problems, rib injuries, etc. Also it's tape so yeah it's not recommended. But that's with any binding method but the one size smaller sports bra since you're compressing your boobs against your chest.

As long as you're polite in the email, it's completely reasonable that you're concerned after 2 months of no contact, especially if they didn't warn you beforehand or tell you specifically when they would contact you next. Just try not to make it too much of a whiny "is it doooone yet"

>> No.8102819

>>8102611
Don't use Ace tape! Its job is to constrict to stabilise and reduce the shifting of injured areas, so every time you inhale, it constricts around your chest. You CAN get cracked ribs from binding with Ace tape for a long period of time.

FtM binders are great and feel like nothing. If you get a legit one from Underworks or Lesloveboat, it doesn't injure your ribs or hurt your breathing. These are designed for daily use, so you know they're good for long wear.

There's also a method of wearing two sports bras - the one closest to your skin the right way, and the one on top backwards (with the bust area on your back instead of on your chest). For me, that one doesn't work much better than wearing only one sports bra, but if your breasts aren't super fleshy, you might have more luck.

Hey guys, so I'm going to my second convention and decided to finally try out cosplay. Thing is, turns out I have 0 talent for manual craft and the likes, so making my own cosplay while keeping it decent might prove hard. I know better than to closet cosplay or buy one on ebay.

You're welcome! And it's not some kind of cosplayer secret code, but if you're looking for company, you can always ask someone you run into if it's cool to hang out with them for a while since you're alone. I've met some con friends that way, when we all happened to be cosplaying from Avatar and ended up spending the day together.

That said, going to a convention is less awkward (and thus less social anxiety-causing) if you're able to go with a friend. Between the two of you, you can fill up a day with things that either person wants to see, and just having someone by your side is useful so you don't look like an aimless loner the third time you make a route of the con floor. If you want to meet people before the con, find the convention's Facebook page or take a look in the Tumblr tag (or sometimes the convention has a forum) - there is almost always someone who is going alone and is interested in hanging out with a new person.

Sup. I'm planning a Homura genderbend cosplay for some point this year, and it's mostly staying the same as the usual design - albeit with some tweaks, obviously: the front bow will just be replaced with a tie of the same colour, heels will just be replaced with a pair of suit shoes, tights will likewise be replaced by suit trousers with the diamond pattern applied with purple fabric paint.

The problem, though, is the skirt. Can anyone think of any ideas for a waistpiece of the same colour which wouldn't look ridiculous worn over trousers?

definitely swap out the film for a fresh roll. Film does expire and besides, you don't know what damage (if any) it has already been subjected to. Why even risk potentially losing 30 shots? Save that roll for a day you feel like doing some experimental photography.

Also, if the photographer is an amateur, film camera is perhaps not the best idea for a shoot. There are many, many factors that can affect the quality of a shot. The fact that it's not even the photographer's camera (and therefore s/he is not familiar with its functions and any quirks it may have) makes me cringe a little. I hope you're not paying money for this shoot.

The ones I got seem sturdy and thicker-knit than most of my tights (ie I think they'll last through more uses). They kind of give my legs a mannequin look, partially because I'm not used to seeing them without scars and partially because I accidentally bought a shade too light. I thought "caramel" would work for my mid-tan Asian skin, but probably should have gone a shade darker.

No, not at all, it's a shoot with friends. I borrowed this camera because we thought it would be fun to get some pictures with the analogic effect and the photographer is in is 50s, so he would know how film works.

On any case I think I'll spend like 20 pictures on something else and leave 10 for the shoot, maybe we'll get some funky effects out of this film. Then replace it with a new film.

Thanks for the advice, it was very helpful!

It should be a thick and comfortable knit with no lining, something like ponte roma, but you can also use bottomweight fabrics if knit fabrics are beyond your skill range.

If you're fairly good at sculpting, there's this fantastic lightweight clay called Premier. It's advertised as a light weight stone clay, and it dries even lighter than it is wet. However, you need to be very certain when sculpting with it because of how easily it sets, but it does take a long time to dry all the way through and can be dented during that time (I sculpted amulets and it took five days to dry). The right type of paint will give it the metallic sheen you want. I suggest perhaps antique gold spray paint-stand about a foot back when giving it a spray.

Maybe thrift/secondhand stores or costume stores for a jacket "like" it. Floor-length coats haven't been in fashion recently.
It'll be highly improbable to find one that you can use for cosplay with only minimal modifications though, since the jacket has a lot of details and specifications, especially the numerous decorative seams and tailored look.

Aye, these are good suggestions, and yes, I do live in the U.S.

Generally I wouldn't do target because the fit tends to be so awful, but Men's Warehouse is a good idea. I was mostly wondering, though, if there were any small independent lines that made nice leather gloves since I'd rather buy from them/anywhere that would do custom sizing. With most of the fetish shops I've seen, they've pretty much only had leather daddy fingerless gloves or weird gauntlets, and not anything tight and clean looking.

I will check Men's Warehouse, though, and even though I'd really rather not foot the price, Coach has had some close to what I've been looking for, but again, I'd prefer custom sizing and would need them before April.

Yen is at a low in the USA. I think it's 1 USD per 1.34 yen or something. I think you can use a FS on rakuten and use your credit card. I wasn't talking about using a FS on YJA but saying that you can use a FS to buy a skirt if you wanted if Ebay/Amazon comes up nil or Amazon.co.jp.

Not related to the original anon's question at all, but that pleated tutorial shouldn't be followed for the most part. The only part I can completely agree with is the supplies needed step and the tip to iron the pleats for longer time to keep their shape. Something is going wrong already when step 2 is "sew a pretty hem" when the skirt body hasn't even been sewn up or pleated. Rest of it seems like begging the person to eyeball the width of the pleats and that ugly and uneven excuse of a waistband part.
>Do not sew a hem on the lower edge!
I don't get this at all. And holy fuck, using paper as the fabric guard and ironing on what appears to be a plush towel.
