Working on making an original FF7 Tifa. The skirt and shirt were bought cheap and altered. The suspenders are pleather with worbla for the metal to match the elbow and boot armor. The belt is leather and is held on by the suspenders. still need to add holes and buttons.

For the wig I wanted to make it look as late 90s as possible... but I still might add more fibers to the bangs. Also... I need to buy new foundation.

Still have to make the gloves. (Gonna try to make the materia light up) and adding a 'boot' cover to the boots to make them look more layered like her's are designed.

So far I'm pretty happy with it. Took me years to decide on which FF character I would cosplay first.

I made my own Kaito (from Vocaloid) and he has similar colors and even a long coat to boot.

For the white, I would recommend a good white twill (think suit/coat material... like James Bond in Goldfinger) Interface and taylor it well so it fits properly, and you'll have one badass character. It's kinda spendy, so I hope you have your heart set on this dude.

Also, to answer your question... flat, but bright white. Cheap shiny fabrics, like costume satin, may look okay in hand, but look poor in photos.

>> No.8052329

That's actually bridal cotton I got on sale because of the shine to it. I didn't wanna go with cheap shit.
And it's the same piece, just showing the wrong and right sides. I bought it because I felt like I wanted that sheen at the time, but now that it comes down to making everything I'm kinda iffy when the wrong side just looks like nice fabric.
I'm afraid of how it'll look in a huge amount of light if I use the right side now.

This is the norgir set from the book. Ignore the shitty underclothes, I just made the armor and wore it to help the author sell copies of his book. The high cost is mostly from the time it takes to put in all the designs. It takes forever to do. To figure out the value of the outfit I took the total price for the norgir set the author makes in his shop and subtracted 30%.

I actually get a lot of offers for custom commission work; the mandolorian merc guys are the best for followthrough, simplicity and further recommendation. If you want to make money with leatherwork make their ammo belt and girdle belt and sell it to one of their guys. They'll do the advertising for you if they're happy.

That looks fucking awesome. I love the weathered look of the leather.

I like to do a lot more steampunk based stuff. The gauntlet I have here was the first thing i ever made. I've done suits of armor and shit since, but the industrial looking shit is what I really enjoy. Though I know you can't make shit just because you like it.

bookmarked your link too. :)

One thing I"d reccomend, and it obviously depends on what the clients want, but i find designs stand out much more if you stain first, then use swivel knife after conditioning and sharpening your knife a lot. Though this can be bad too, because if you slip it shows really badly.

I have all the patterns in scale for a guy at 6' with an athletic build, I just scale as needed. For stuff like pauldrons I took a plaster cast of my own shoulder after a workout and made a form with it. Leather is easy to shape, you just need custom forms. You don't need them for every client though.

most of the time I offer to charge a lot less and give them a set of instructions on how to form the leather.

The biggest pain with custom work is how most clients don't understand the limitations of leather. It isn't worbla or craft foam, it can't do just about anything. Though what it can do makes it more than worth it. Most importantly it can take a literal beating and look good after a quick buffing.

I found 7.5 yards of twill that i was supposed to go towards some harry potter cloaks but the plan to make all 4 house robes fell through. I've tried to budget and use materials i have just to half at least the cost of this. So far i have yet to go out and buy anything other than the white bias tape. Also, why did you shade the suit with light colors? I guess I could understand if you were trying to replicate the light sheen on his suit, but muscle suits should almost always be shaded with darker colors. Mostly done. I'm not in love with the neck airbag, which came out too short and flares upward instead of downward, which messes up the way that the airbag should lie on top of the harness's chest strap... but I won't have enough time to redo it before Katsu. I need to trim loose threads, adjust the harness (and sew down one of the upper leg buckles that keeps moving around), and sew the braid on top for stability.

yea i really tried. I knew how expensive it could end up being so i tried to cut costs where i felt it was feasible. This is where im at with it right now. Bottom strap was pinned in this photo. I have -alot- of pressing to do and it's mainly because i've been putting it on/taking it off the mannequin. I just have the arm band on the right arm, and both the metal pieces. Not entirely sure if i want to just make them out of foam or what. Looking into what other people have done atm and if anyone has any suggestions please feel free to let me know what could work.

Of course! They're strap dividers from The Rain Shed. This screenshot shows what I ordered (pretend that I can spell "number"). If you're looking to make this particular suit, I didn't end up using the looplocs, I had two triglides left over, and I made my own four-way buckles for the shoulder blades because the company doesn't sell four-way strap dividers for 1.5" webbing (although they do sell four-way dividers for 1" webbing). The Travato buckles are bulkier than I'd like, but I wanted the dual-release function to make the harness easy to adjust.

The company shipped my stuff out the same afternoon, which was nice.

I made lots of progress on my steampunk mining character. :) I know original characters are kind of frowned upon, especially steampunk, but I see nothing wrong with it personally. I guess it's just a preference thing.

Got the rest of the body done, am currently working on thigh, and lower leg pieces. I also picked up some decent props at hobby lobby. (last week was like a 50% off of everything sale including metal decorations)

>>8087123
I remember my first corset. Looks pretty good for a early try! I will tell you, after making a pleather corset myself, they don't last, and it's a waste of time. Pleather pulls and rips, and especially on a corset. You also don't have near enough bones in it to hold your form. You need at least 8 or 9 more if you're going to properly cinch it, and they need to be spiral steel.

>>8087163
I've always loved steampunk when done right. This looks really awesome. You seem to have a clear direction, and I don't see a single gear glued on (other than the goggles) Seagulls are just sandy when it comes to this kind of shit.

Yeah, I know @_@ this one started seriously tearing, especially when I hammered in the grommets. Also i would have put more boning in but this was like a week before the con so I was in a huge rush to finish everything. Also plastic boning was cheap so I just used that ;A; I wish I had more time so I didn't have to rush making this one. Also i learned how to sew like two weeks before this pic so I'm like... super noob here

>> No.8088953

idk if you're still around but I've been thinking about the steel bits
Prior to starting this i did some research on making corsets online and decided to go with plastic because cheap, local place doesn't sell steel, and it was my first corset so I didn't wanna fuck up with steel
But a bunch of people online said specifically steel wasn't worth it/didn't work very well. I'm guessing steel would be sturdier?

I didn't care for Conner that much as a character, he didn't feel as well fleshed out as he could have been. BUt I did feel bad for him at the end, he did all of that stuff and he still couldn't save his home, bummer. There wasn't enough between him and his father and I didn't like the final fight.

I had a lot of glitches and shit with my game (I played PS3), like the music wouldn't play in some areas and shit. Also because it was set in the US there wasn't really any good buildings the climb, other then the trees and shit. Also I really didn't get into the hunting mini game.

I've heard a lot of good things about Black Flags but I haven't gotten around to playing it, maybe someday I will.

But I won't clog up the progress thread with any more AC talk haha.

Since you're so incredibly stupid, I wasn't even going to respond. However, after a little bit of thought, I've decided it best to. If to make me feel better.

1. You're right. I do have steampunk goggles. You claim i have no steampunk elements on my costume, yet most people consider the goggles steampunk. Also, I'm an interplanetary miner, so goggles might be helpful?

2. You're right. There's a gear on it. not quite sure how you spotted it, as the quality is so low, but that's a gear in the center. I'll tell you the story as to why i put a gear on my costume. read: ONE fucking gear.

My brother gave me a package two years ago. He helped me design my first pair of goggles. He then drove his car off a bridge into the ocean. This is one of the gears from that pair of goggles. I don't care if it's "glue gears on it and call it steampunk" you and rightly fuck off.

3. What? Are you fucking retarded? Victorian Europe was one of the biggest class divides in recent human history. There was a tiny tiny percentile that wore silks, and elegant expensive clothing. If you're inferring that a female costume should be bustles and big hoop skirts, then I'm sorry to inform you that lots of women dressed up as men to work in male fields. Given my undersuit for this outfit is suspenders, a white button up, and brown pants, your argument is entirely invalid and based in stupidity.

4. That's an opinion. Just because it's not gears, and shitty cheap corsets does not mean it's not steampunk.

Just so you know, the design was based entirely off of 1800s science fiction novels. There's not many steamy elements. about that you'd be correct, but that's something I can add at a later date.

5. That's just outright rude. Would you like to know what's ruining steampunk? Chicks like this. Chicks who don't know what the fuck they're doing, and just throw shit together. By the way, That's me. two years ago. I've improved a lot. try being less sandy next time.
