-Cheaper hotel fees/rates
-Bigger rooms
-An actual convention center

-Four local hotels designated for the con, with the Radison being ENTIRELY bought out for the congoers
-Parking at Radison is free
-Radison seems like it's gonna be party hell, considering it's near a train, and they will pretty much ignore noise complaints unless it's literally audible from the roof to the floor
-Gonna have a lot of food in the con suite

The rain didn't help. The pool deck is usually the highlight of the con, but it was completely dead Sat and Sun.

The badge crackdowns were understandable, given how many people were bragging about ghosting it, but it was still annoying as shit.

I'm sorry the /cgl/ gathering wasn't as fun as prior years, but thanks to everyone who wanted a Fabri/cgl/adiator ribbon! It was fun passing those out. I really wanted to hug Turbo Slut Ryuko because she was 2qt, but I got all shy.

Overall, for only being at ALA for 1 and 1/4th days, I didn't enjoy the con itself, but the friend hanging out times were the best. If I were able to go all 3 days I might have had a better time. Also that goddamned rain rustled my jimmies.

The pool was not dead on Sat.... was actually more crowded than Friday despite the rain.

Also, I think I was kinda the cause for the badge crackdowns due to my loud ass mouth. I had "a couple" friends coming who were "ghosting" by printing out cardboard badges that looked just like the original ones. So I talked about it to another staff (a casual conversation) and I guess he told radio base. So ConOps started actually checking the badges rather than just casually glancing at it; on the bright side, plenty of us got ribbons from confiscated fake badges. I didn't bother with ribbon collecting, though so I just ignored eet.

Also, the whole ghostin' the pool is pretty lenient this year. On Friday I was a little strict because I was told "badge only to get in/out", but a hotel staff told me otherwise so I adjusted.

We were supposed to let you in/out if
-Don't need badge or hotel pass to go into hotel, only need those to get into pool
-Badge OR hotel pass to get into pool
-Be with someone with a hotel pass
-Ask really nicely, most of the people at the door are volunteers and will probably let you pass provided you aren't a greasy old dude coming in for creep shots

Normally there's swarms of photographers and great cosplayers out there, plus pretty frequent gatherings. But all the pool gatherings got canceled, none of the cosplayers wanted to ruin their outfits, and the photographers didn't want their equipment wet.

Had a really good weekend overall. Many things I wish I could have done but those are personal things and there isn't much to do about it. But time spent with friends, winning an award that I've always wanted, and just enjoying myself the way I have been wanting to at a con for a while has been a big deal for me and I really needed it! ALA 2015 was a ton of fun, can't wait to start working on 2016.

On a negative note, I've got a shit ton of notes on fixing up policies and suggestions on cleaning up the small issues happening internally and externally.

One thing that I want managed is who is allowed to say what on our social media. Already we manage our ALA Page and our open-to-all FB group, but I feel that a rule of who is allowed to say what or a guideline of who's supposed to manage, moderate and "monitor" the forums should be left to my division internally and by no one else without my approval.

I would also like to see a level of professionalism from every single staffer, starting at the volunteer level all the way to dedicated, registered, and reoccurring staffers. I'm not asking for "Press liaison for the United Nations" level of professionalism, but a standard needs to be made and set. Stories of staffers being rude to other staffers, conflict resolution issues, and proper procedure and protocol to address any issues like that between staff and attendees.

We're having a meeting before january ends and I'm gonna bring up what I can. I'm also pruning my staff listing of a few people myself for the sake of professionalism or at least transferring them around.

The importance of acting at con to book a hotel was never pointed out. I'm busy enough dealing with the con while it's happening, I didn't realize we are also expected to deal with next years con at the same time. There's a big difference between "you can book your hotel now" and "you SHOULD book it because it will sell out fast". I wanted to actually drive out there and see what the hell we're dealing with before booking. Also my credit card expires in March, I've had hotel rooms get cancelled on me when they charge the wrong # even after trying to tell them the situation. One thing to know about CA is that the persona cosplay scene is really strong there to the point where they host two gatherings a convention. The same two guys run the events and I have legitimately made some real good friends there.

I'd rather be a boring person who's attending conventions for REAL activities, than a stupid one who has nothing better to do at a convention than get wasted. Glad ALA is moving to Ontario. It should be the responsibility of the minor to know that they shouldn't be drinking. People at cons wish to have a great time and are the nicest people I know.
