The problem I have isn't the fact that people cosplay from those series just that there is little to no variety and it gets annoying to me. I seen a ton of Sexy Pikachu Gijinka and little to no trainers or even gym leaders. In fact at the photoshoot I'm participating in I'm the only person doing a human trainer from XY (the male version.) Everyone else including my friends are doing Gijinka. The Persona photoshoot I thought about participating? Everyone is doing P3/P4. Nobody is doing P1/P2. Nobody is doing Ken or Titsuru. There's like ten Minato/Makoto/Yu/Chie/Yukiko and Naoto so far. The FF PS my friend did? Nothing but FF7/10/13.

I just want more VARIETY but most people would rather just stick with the crowd.

I think in these cases it would be better to name specific characters in the thread, as these franchises have tons of untapped material. To be honest, there will always be people that only cosplay FOTM with these franchises, but they'll disappear with new releases so I don't let them bother me. Things like Harley, however, have stupid amounts of staying power.
I agree about the overload of gijinkas, though, I was so disappointed when XY came out and I couldn't find any Diantha cosplays for around a year, and it's not like it's even from an older game.

You did Yukari. That's standing out. Last year and this year there was no Yukari to speak of but ten people were doing Naoto last year. None of them could pull off a Naoto either and they all looked bad. It was like one Minato/Makoto and nothing but duplicate P4 characters. This was planned in advance so it wasn't like nobody knew but people didn't want to change cosplays because they all wanted to do that one character and be popular. That's why I wanted to do Ken this year.

If you like doing it go ahead anon but I don't personally like seeing two-three crappy Eevee Gijinka that all look bad yet this Pokemon doesn't have a Gijinka because it's not popular nor anyone wants to stand out. I happen to like Gijinka but it's for me rare to find Gijinka at the cons I've been to that isn't a Pikachu, Jiggly, starter Pokemon, Eevee, etc.

About League of Legends cosplay, I have to tell that I like it. There is a ton os characters and skins to cosplay from, but I'm really tired of seeing Katarina, Ahri, Jinx and specially Battle Bunny Riven.
Riven has so many skins but people always chose to cosplay the sexist one. Nitpick but I also hate Rivens who slap a white wig on their heads and call it a day, pic related. For fucks sake, Riven has a bun.
And please don't get me started on the Battle Bunny [random character from LoL] and Pool Party [random character from LoL] trend. You put on a totally random swimsuit and tell that it's Pool Party. Please, can't you buy a swimsuit that looks like something the character would wear and make the props? Because the last time I checked Graves had his gun on this skin, Leona had her sword/shield, etc.

I'd disagree with Dingle Rompers. I don't really know/follow the series that well, but there are some legitimately interesting designs, and it's always pretty fun to see the more complex ones done really well. The more common ones are pretty harmless to me.

It sucks, but I'm kind of tired of seeing a lot of superhero cosplay, mostly of the spandexy DC/Marvel brand. I know spandex/stretch can be challenging to sew, but after a while, it's just boring when it comes to craftsmanship. Even if the designs are occasionally hideous, at least those Bishoujo figurines have interesting designs that are more than just blocks of colored spandex on top of each others.

On your Persona comments. Atlus has milked P3 and P4 so hard the cow's udders have fallen off. And it's doesn't look like they're going to stop anytime soon with the Persona 4D, Q, A Ultimax: Ultimate Harder shit. Persona 2 barely got released in North America and since 1 and 2 are older games, people are less likely to have played them. So it makes since that 3 and 4 are way more popular. Not saying it's a good thing, just that's it's logical.

All that aside, I wish people were better at organizing photoshoots so that even if it's just 3 and 4, it's *all* of 3 and 4. I don't want see three goddamn Chies. One good one plus a kanji and a Rise would be awesome. I played the shit out of P4 and have always wanted to do a group cosplay with people that actually featured all eight characters. Despite me already cosplay being Teddie, I tried to talk the fatty into the bear suit, but she wouldn't budge on Chie. Had to abandon the whole goddamn thing.

Most default Mikus screw up the proportions. The twintails should be knee length, and the skirt should be super short, with super tall boots. Something that would really stand out to me would be using LEDs on her sleeve panel or putting a lot of effort into it, they typically look like shit. Also, put effort into the makeup. Toronto here, that only really happened in 2006-2009 or so. Local Canadian cons are usually kind of behind when it comes to fandoms since people generally premiere their big costumes in May (Anime North) or August/September (Fan Expo), so if a series was popular in early to mid 2014, it probably won't show up en masse at our cons until Anime North this year. (I'm predicting this with Fire Emblem Awakening and Love Live.) I got on and off the Attack on Titan bandwagon in mid-2013 before it got really popular here in 2014.

Honestly, I don't really blame the Pokemon cosplayers for doing gijinka. Everyone has a favorite Pokemon. Their movesets, powers, and designs are what's interesting. The trainers (especially the mains) are kind of blank slates. You get a little info on them and that's fun but you cultivate teams of Pokemon throughout the entire games. Your favorite Pokemon are a way bigger deal than your favorite trainers.

Simple Pokemon designs=simple, comfortable gijinka for walking around the convention.

Elaborate Pokemon designs= a good excuse to show off some skill.

Most of the trainer outfits are pretty good for walking around a con, but I can see why the appeal is way less.

It could have been really interesting, watching an idiot of a teenager bumble her way through learning to be diplomatic instead of being a wrecking ball, but instead they deus ex machina'd her ass and all character development stopped in its tracks.

As a huge ATLA fan, I was super pumped for Korra in the years building up to it (anyone else remember how excited they were for the release date OF the release date?) and it ending up to be one of the worst fucking cases of buyer's remorse. Even with Book One's shitty end I was all, "okay, fine. Korra's jesus. Whatever. It's fine. Seriously, I'm not mad or anything. Really, it's fine. The next three seasons will still probably be good... right?"

And now it's getting praised out the ass for having a previously completely unestablished crack fan gay pairing hinted at in the final two minutes of the series?! No, fuck you, Vanity Fair and New York Times. This show is shit! It's writing IS SHIT! Throwing together two chicks that previously MADE OUT WITH THE SAME GUY BEHIND EACH OTHER'S BACKS is not fucking "subversive." And now instead of letting it die and time forgetting about it, the show's going to be remembered as "the first GBLT relationship in western children's programming." It's so obvious Mike and Bryan just jammed it in there to get praise for jumping on the gay bandwagon because there's nothing fucking else memorable about that show.

Homestuck is obvious. AoT is able to push those numbers down but most don't even have the gear and blades. Deadpools and Doctors stick out, but hardly seen many lately. I need to check cosplay comparisons between industry run comic conventions and small fan run conventions. Industry consumers to teen hangouts.

I'm so tired of seeing mediocre cosplays of outfits that should be really detail-heavy and complicated. Even the lesser done stuff - if you're going to do (say) Blade&Soul, fucking really do it. Every asspatted mediocre cosplay like that makes me sad for lost potential, especially on rarer stuff.

I'm so mad about yaoi brats hopping on the sports manga train all the time. Sports manga is my favorite, and I had been begging all of my friends for just one of them to read Haikyuu for almost two years, and suddenly the anime came out and bam everyone's all over it. Same with Yowapedal. I actually had a friend reccomend me Yowapedal when there was something like...only 7 chapters out? I had been trying to get her into sports manga forever, but she's really shy and introverted and she somehow stumbled on it and really liked the main character. It got her interested in sporty stuff and I finally, after so many years, got her to read Eyeshield and Teppu and finally had someone to talk to about HQ. She really liked Oofuri too, because of how shy the main character was, she connects with characters like that.

Same with Hunter x Hunter, I had been tearing my hair out since middle school to get anyone to read it, then the 2011 anime comes out and suddenly there's an active fandom. It was like a dream come true for me.

I think the only series that really bothers me as a whole is AoT, and that's because their uniforms are so similar. Even if you make really good weapons and have the little cape, it's not that special at this point.

You have to realize that LoL characters were made for cosplayers. Practically EVERYONE in my friend's list who cosplays has played League at one point.

That said, from experience, it's people who actually try to get better at the game that actually also seem to place a bit more work and detail to their cosplays as well.

It comes to a point where the higher their ranked/normal elo is, the higher the quality of their cosplay will be.

You can't really control what randoms do. The sooner you accept that the better. It's not really the gathering host's job to try to get a even spread of characters. the CA scene is pretty healthy for Persona (We even get SMT and the older games as well) and despite all of this there's only one guy who ends up cosplaying Teddie every con. Open bindings can look ok if the character has canon bindings.
I don't understand the point of open binding while cosplaying a male version of any character without bindings though. If anything bindings should be the last thing visible.

It's one of the top series in Japan right now and Kira has been on the anime list of popular males for several years running in the USA and Japan. That's why I mentioned it. For a popular series it isn't cosplayed a lot.

People are going to cosplay the characters they like from those popular series. Chie and Yukiko are popular. Naoto is popular. Teddie is not. Kanji is not and his wig is hard to do for a noob. Ken is not popular and nobody bothers with the dog Koromaru (or even a plushie.) You can't change that so it's best for you to be different or urge your friends if they are into Persona too. I'm asking my group what Persona cosplays they are going to do for Acen so I don't do a duplicate or do someone not done.

Yet there's like three Yu's at cons and sometimes a few Chie's. Nobody really cares about 'moving in on their trademark.' The problem is many times people lack originality and would rather go with the crowd than stand out or do what's popular to get attention than stand out and be original. Plus Teddie isn't a popular character either.

I don't mind when people cosplay similar things but at least stand out. If I see two Gijinka cosplay outfits that are the same Pokemon most of the time they end up having nothing different besides body type. Stand out more is what I'm saying. Or don't do what's in the crowd. If you see a shitload of Deadpool don't just do Deadpool too. Do another Marvel character you like or do something that Deadpool has in the comic books that you never seen before.

I fucking wish I could be sick of seeing Persona cosplays. I've seen maybe two Mitsurus, a Chie, and a Minato at the last convention. Though I can agree seeing even one P2 cosplay'd probably be amazing.

Amongst the throng of almost half of every convention consisting of Homestuck cosplayers, and the other half consisting of Deadpool cosplayers competing with each other to be lolsorandom.

Here in Belgium, at the last Made in Asia con, there (from what I can remember) were a lot of Naruto cosplays. I can also remember there was a lot of League cosplay and one really shit Garren with crappy carboard armor

It's an awesome indie video game that came out a few months ago.

For what's essentially a bunch of jump scares, it's incredibly effective.
