I understand the necessity for cosplay with outlandish character designs, but you're hard pressed to find a lolita nowadays without fake hair/ nails/lashes/lenses. Misako likes to keep it natural, apart from that I struggled to find pics. Aside from wig users with a medical issue ( hair loss through chemo, trichotillomania etc) does anyone else just find them wigs/ extensions weird/creepy? Can we see some pics with real hair? I get disappointed when I see a lovely coord/hair and then find out it's fake. It's like congratulating a cosplayer's handiwork then finding out they didn't make it.

Fanny Rosie uses her natural hair, but truthfully I find your opinion pretty silly. Lolita is all about looking the part, and most people cannot achieve the desired look with their natural hair. It will pretty much always leave a lot to be desired. Some people have naturally thin hair, and both lolitas and cosplayers will tell you that on some days, your hair is just not going to cooperate, simple as that. That's why cosplayers use wigs even when their natural hair could "pass". You sound like you're just trying to justify your own laziness.

No. You're retarded for thinkings wigs are only reserved for costumes and sick people.

Looking good in lolita can be achieved with or without wigs. Natural is not always better and not everyone has real hair suited for lolita looks.

I totally understand you!
Yeah I know wigs are nice an such, but I simply could never wear one and go out and about.
I mostly wear lolita to uni or going out with my friends/bf, if I suddenly wore a wig they would ask me what's wrong with me and if I've gone mad wearing a wig outside of a costume.
Lolita already looks a little costume-y and I try to pick the more casual classicxsweet prints, it passes as a retro or alt fashion, but if I wore a wig I would feel like I'm cosplaying something.
I might wear one at a con where it's reasonable to go all out and look OTT, but other than that..
Idk, I'm happy I have thick blonde straight hair and I prefer berets and hats anyway.

Whenever I read wigs are 'totes necessary' I'm kinda sad, because it sounds like lolita becomes a costume you only wear to cons and meet-ups(which could count as a gathering of costumed people).

I think pic related is milkyfawn's real hair and I don't see why it shouldn't look as good as a wig.

>> No.7984751

Why does everyone act like wigs are costumey? My green afro would make it look more like a costume than a natural brown wig. If you wear your natural hair and it looks nice, great, but don't act like it's suddenly so strange that people choose to not use their real hair, for whatever reason.

Wearing wigs for fashion purposes is completely normal and common. Black people wear wigs and weave all the time, and plenty of other normalfags do as well.

Personally, I have a short afro. It's impossible for me to get lolita-appropriate hair at the moment. I'd rather someone wears a wig and looks nice, than have hair that doesn't balance out their coord.

I bought a wig a few months ago and I still feel like a clown wearing it. /cgl/ told me fashion wigs are totally normal but so far everyone I told about it freaked out and asked what was wrong with my own hair, and if I was ill. There isn't a large black community where I live but all the black women I do know go au naturel and don't wear weaves. So far only the lolitas in my area seem to think wigs are normal, everyone else thinks it's a costume or cancer thing.

I think I'm going to keep growing my real hair out and figure out some nice ways to style it, and maybe leave the wig for meetups only.

But the 'desired look' has been formulated over time. It's a recent trend to almost always use a wig instead of real hair. I think it's lazier to not put the time/effort into keeping your real hair in good condition or styling it nicely rather than just throw a wig over the top

I see so many people pull off their wigs with ratty, greasy, split hair hidden under it by their own admission.

Oh Honey...Misako not only wears lashes but a certain type of really big-in-the-middle Diamond Lash gyaru type lashes...she also sometimes wears wigs and extensions, btw...and just clips them in like they are a normal part of her outfit.

Let those who like them wear them. If you don't, don't? I'd rather see a well done wig or fake nails than scraggly hair and bitten nails any day though. And much of the 'more natural' look is exactly that. There is also nothing wrong with cosplayers wearing a bought/commissioned costume as long as they aren't trying to pass it off as self-made or entering contests they shouldn't.

>> No.7984915

I like using my natural hair because wigs are uncomfortable and itchy. For me, lolita has been about learning about my own femininity. I hadn't worn makeup or done my hair nicely since I was a young teen. With lolita I've been teaching myself how to do those things. I also want to apply the things I learn with lolita to my everyday life including dressing better and doing my hair.

I also work in a professional environment and would be concerned about my co-workers opinions of me if they recognized me in a wig.

I don't mind that other people like to use wigs, but personally I probably won't anytime soon.

For me, wigs are in the same category as false eyelashes as being too "much" for daily wear. Too much work for me. I don't mind at all if people want to wear wigs (or lashes) every day, but I hate the idea that we HAVE to. I cringe every time someone shits on another person's coord for not wearing a wig. We're not models on a catwalk, we don't have to look absolutely perfect to go to the grocery store, damnit.

The only time I have seen that and thought it was legit was when everything else in a coordinate was very fancy, OTT or otherwise very dressy and the hair was meh. It's mentioned, poster whines about their hair not behaving etc., and people suggest a wig. It's almost predictable. Not everyone has great hair for the style they like to wear, but if you don't match your hair, you'll get told, just like if your socks don't match the coord.

Well done natural hair that fits with a coord usually gets nothing but praise and admiration. I admit, I wear wigs or extensions about 1/2 the time but I also have natural hair that goes well with most of my coordinates and I've never been told I needed (or would look better in) a wig.

Do you have any idea how hard it is to style a wig? It's a lot harder than your real hair. The main reason I go with my natural hair over a wig is actually because wigs are so much more of a hassle. It's in no way comparable to finding out a cosplayer didn't make their costume.

You don't have to be sick to have bad hair, you know. Some people were not born with good hair genetics.
People have told me I look BETTER with a wig because it achieves volume that I could never hope to achieve with my real hair. It balances out my outfits, and being plus size, it also balances out my body.

It fucking sucks, mkay?
I also have bad skin too. It's awful being an invisible person or worse, a 'sick' or 'tired' person, if you're not wearing a face full o slap to hide your red spots and scars.
The list goes on about things I wasn't born with but other people take for granted.

>> No.7985006

For some girls wigs are the best route. I used to have hair down to my mid back that would have been great in lolita but after getting extremely sick it began falling out and I had to cut it to a pixie cut. It's healthier now but has always been extremely thin. I also have a small head and the thin hair + a small head means that many hair accessories don't look right. I can't tell you the number of items I have that swamp one side of my head and look absolutely ridiculous without a wig.

No it isnt. Most people in lolita do very basic styles, usually only slightly different from the natural state of the wig. There are some crazy styling in cosplay, but not in lolita. It also is easier to style a wig than your own hair because you can do it ahead of time.

Wigs are easy mode.

I haven't read anything this stupid all day. Wigs are by far much easier to style than your own hair. You have 360° viewing ability, you can remove it at any time when you're reaching a difficult point, and if it gets messed up you just toss it in hot water and start over again.

Something tells me OP isn't really a lolita or just trying to rustle some, but I'll respond anyway.

No one has ever said needing a wig, fake lashes, fake nails is essential. The big thing with wigs though is that for people who do have a hard time styling theirs, it's a great way to get a good look and make sure everything is in order. Nothing makes me feel worse than having a nice coord and boring ass hair.

She didn't say that either.

I will agree with her though, lolita has been taking a lot of the fake perfect princess looks from gyaru with in the past few years. I feel like sweet lolita(and those dreaded GLWs) attributed quite a bit to that. OTT style makes sense, but I feel like noobs especially think that lolita basics are similar to gyaru ones, circle lenses, lashes, floofy big hair, when that's not the case at all.

I think it may be getting worse now actually since OTT classic is making headway and it used to seem more limited to sweet.

I actually think animated films are the only place where uber long hair look good, because on animator's desk they're not bound by sad reality, i.e. tangling, greasing, fraying, frying, flying idiotically into your face, clinging to your sweaty skin, parting unevenly and being too damn heavy for your neck.

Are these cut crooked or is it just me?

Requesting images of natural hair from girls that don't have bangs at all; it seems like most go for blunt ones or side-swept ones and I really can't rock either of those. Right now I'm stuck parting down the middle or doing a side part.

As for OP...a decent wig will be difficult to recognize as well, a wig. Unless it's the cotton candy pastel ones, in which case the wig is hopefully appropriate for an OTT coord anyway.

As for lashes and nails and lenses...I honestly don't think they're as common as you think unless all you're looking at are photos from conventions and other large events. For example, the last meet I went to had about 40 people in attendance. No one had fake nails (and if they did, they were very subtle, not the OTT bling-up style ones), 3 or 4 of us had lenses, 5 or 6 with wigs, and one or two with false lashes. I think people just like to post photos of the more OTT coords online so maybe that's why you're not seeing as many 'natural' lolitas?

I don't think lenses, fake nails, wigs, or false lashes are necessary per say (look at old school lolita, none of that was really a thing at all), but it's one way to change up a look and make it more dramatic without doing something permanent like perming your hair...and a lot of lolitas don't necessarily know how to style their hair or do their nails and cuticle care and stuff like that so their natural look may not be as polished as they'd like for lolita.

I'm getting repetitive I think sorry.

Really kinda take issue with that phrasing.

I think OP is right, in the sense that we think straight/slightly wavy hair is best with lolita because that's what we're used to (everything else seems to be a weird troll).

Natural hair can be difficult to style, but I don't think super kinky or curly hair inherently clashes with the lolita aesthetic.

As for the wig debate, I don't spend as much time in the comm anymore to know if people actually think that wigs are necessary for anything but OTT, but is it possible that you're mixing cosplayers and lolitas? Just because a lot of people use wigs over their real hair doesn't mean people think it's mandatory to do so.

I've got knee-length hair, admittedly cutting it shorter soon, but honestly I think that kind of length makes your hair too flat for lolita unless you have blessed genes.
Curling it and doing things like >>7985486 looks lovely, but given the effort and risk to damaging your hair, wigs are still usually easier. Braided updos are great for hiding 'fairy tales' but again, it's half to time spent just to put on a nice wig.

The hairdresser herself acknowledged that I had no split ends, she just wanted to fix what she said was a heavy, outdated hairstyle).

I like how my natural hair looks in lolita, I have waist-length super-straight black hair with bangs, but in many cases it just blends into my dress because 80% of my dresses are black. It can look cool in some cases, but I really wish I could wear wigs easier to give that kind of contrast between my hair and dress

>> No.7986687

See, but people bitch if you wear your "natural"/actual hair too, especially if it doesn't fit the aesthetic. How many times have people been posted to the ita thread for having ~speshul snowflake tumblr edgelord hair~ and not having the common fucking sense to throw on a wig and cover that shit up?

Dirty punk anon here, I KNOW my normal hair (shaved in weird places and a bunch of neon colors and grown-out roots and not girly or cute at all) is not acceptable for a lolita coord, so I have wigs. If I just wandered out of the house in an otherwise nice coord with my real hair, the internet would skin me alive. It doesn't fit the fashion, because my lifestyle doesn't, but at least I have the common sense to figure that out and take a step to fix it for lolita fashion (wear a wig, no matter how "creepy" it is).

Lolita is a hobby and an escape for me. I'm not giving up my hxc punx lifestyle hair for something I do as a hobby when I manage to find the time between work and travel and punk junk, especially when wigs are so cheap in comparison. Just my $0.02, but maybe my opinion doesn't count because I'm not a 24/7 daily lifestyle lolita.

I want to know how to do these curly pigtails, extensions or need my hair longer? Mine are thin and chin length, bob styled so they look a bit flat. Also i wont make my hair grow longer, i look like shit with long hair.

>> No.7986791

>>7986766
A lot of girls use clip on pigtails to give that effect on shorter hair. You just make your real hair into two little buns and clip them on top, like shown in >>7985858

>> No.7986804

>>7986619
You could look into clip-in extensions in fun colors, that could give you some contrast without going the full wig route, and it would help to draw visual attention to what sounds like really lovely hair.

>> No.7986805

>>7986766
You can't do curly pigtails that length if your hair is only chin length to start with - as you can see, the pigtails themselves are chin length after being curled. I would get clip on pigtails.

With natural hair it can look pretty cute. It obviously depends on the style of twintails you're doing and what you're wearing. But generally I think they're a pretty well accepted hairstyle.

It's not just genetics though, anon, there's a lot of hard work.
I have classic length but just from wearing hair elastics a bit more and lightening it, it now takes over an hair to brush it properly each day, and I can't wear it down for long without damaging it.

Louvrianne (or however it's spelt) pretty much can never wear her hair down in case she damages it, she's even said, and she needs to keep it in protective styles all the time, and you can see from FannyRosie's old photos that her beautiful curls are the results of time-consuming rag curling etc, and not just genetic.

Natural black hair isn't fine where did you hear that?
The only reason it's dry is because our roots are thick which blocks the oils that come out of our scalp. This can easily be fixed by using a moisturizer on your hair everyday.
My hair doesn't break anymore than the average person.
I literally don't take care of my hair the way I should and it's still thick and long so it really doesn't demand specific care unless your styling it.
Now if you're growing your hair out from a relaxer then yes you have to take care of it more but once you're natural or have been natural it's really easy to do your hair.

Depends on the length of your hair.
If your hair is long, the weight should either be dispersed around your whole head (i.e. two braids wrapped across/around the head, milk maid style) or at the least you should change where the weight is as often as possible. Simple buns with minimum tension or pins.

If your hair is short that the pulling isn't such an issue, then anything with minimal pins/elastics is good. Plaits keep the hair together and lower damage to flyaway strands.

Google about the long hair community for more.

No one even acts like they've always been the norm, but that doesn't mean they don't look better. Just like in cosplay, with the increased quality of wigs, the amount of tutorials for almost anything you can imagine, and the advancement in technology has only led to improvement in the overall quality of cosplays over the years. Same goes for loli. Just because that's "how it was", doesn't mean it's better, and doesn't mean you should refuse to change.

>> No.7989828

Just because you can do it doesnt mean everyone can. Most people with long hair end up doing braids and buns daily to keep their hair protected.

Taking 30 seconds to brush it is likely just your hair type. It takes me 30 minutes to comb out my hair and thats because it is curly, so it is something I do only when its wet anyways.

THIS.

I have really fine straight hair with zero body so it ends up looking thiner than it really is. In order to give it any curl and volume I have to blow it dry, use 20 lbs of product and then put it in hot rollers that I have to leave in for a while (curling iron is too brief of contact, my hair won't hold shape). Afterwards I have to use half a bottle of hairspray. The whole ordeal takes at least 45 min to an hour.

And after all that my hair will STILL straighten and lose the style in about 4 hours. Just in time for group pictures.

A wig? I throw that shit on and I am done.

How are wigs not 500% easier for looking fabulous fast? Even if your hair isn't as shitty as mine, there is no possible way you can style your natural hair faster than the amount of time it takes to just put on your already perfectly fucking wig.

Mine is. It's dense in the number of hair but fine and prone to breakage. It's still back length, just means I have to wrap it every night, spend an hour detangling it and saturate it with coconut oil. The reason black hair gets dry is because of the shape of the hair shaft making it more structurally delicate, easy to snag/tangle and oil can't travel all the way down the shaft as well as straight hair. This leads to breakage as well as chemical processing or heat. I learned the hard way to never let a salon put straighteners in my hair...

If I want it straighter for a meet or con I set it overnight and pray lol

I've definitely met newbies who try to give advice to other newbies and tell them to get a wig before they tell them to get a petticoat. Of course experienced lolitas know better but many newbies (in my comm, anyway) 'grew up' seeing OTT sweet lolitas with enormous hair and think that's a necessary part of the look. One time I was wearing a natural-looking wig and one of the newbies I'd never met before apparently thought I was new too, and told me my coord would look a lot better if I got a wig like everyone else. It was awkward.

>> No.7991059

Same here! I also have thin hair that takes tons of product to have anything resembling volume. Braided styles look okay, but that's about it. Wigs are so much easier and typically look better.

Obviously some people can do the natural hair look with the style, but I am not one of them. And the wigs I choose all look very natural--people who do not see me on a regular basis rarely even know they are wigs.

It's a matter of preference and practicality in the end.

Different anon here. I have fine hair also and my hair doesn't break a lot. What do you use on your hair?
And do you detangle in the shower with conditioner? My hair is to my shoulder blades and detangling in the shower takes me around 10 mins.
My mom and I both have natural hair but my is finer and it's easier for me to do my hair because it's fine. I can also use less products.
Is your hair relaxed? You can still warp your natural hair? I can only pineapple mine.
Just make sure you sleep with a satin cap on it also helps stop the breakage.

Absolutely this. I have a natural Merida-style curl going on and once my hair gets past my shoulderblades it NEEDS to be tapered, or it goes into a giant solid brick of curl. Layering doesn't worse because it ends up in 'steps.'
