We haven't had this thread for a while and I decided to check out Kota Bear's youtube again.

He's not wrong(mostly design replicas, since it is possible for prints with the "label" on it can technically be illegal like with the fake LV), apart from the brands being forced to lower prices as they have a large enough audience especially AP

>> No.7972665

What I don't understand is how in this day and age where Taobao and indie brands (many of which do custom sizing) are widely accessible to the International community and produces clothing that is sometimes on-par with brand quality for less that people can still excuse replicas because it's supposedly the only way that people can get dresses they can afford/fit into.

It's the prestige that comes with burando. There are heaps of cheap, fashionable purses in the world, but people still go after fake LV stuff to give off the appearance of wealth and belonging to an elite crowd.

Orrr some people just really love certain prints specifically and won't settle for anything but the closest thing possible if they can't fit the real one. Eh. I dunno, man.

This, but off-brand is not up to par with brand made in the past decade. There might be one or two exceptions, but none of the offbrand I've ever owned compares to my brand pieces in terms of quality. I use to own an AP abomination from 2002 that was lower quality than modern day offbrand, but that's it. That's not to say people shouldn't buy them or that they're wasting their money, offbrand is fine.

Also, even if the only lolita options really were brand and replicas, if they took two fucking seconds to look at second hand websites, they would find tons of nice brand for the same as a replica or less.

Good job.
Sorry if that sounds bitchy, I'll go on to proper feedback now.

I agree with >>7974231
Better lights would make your videos look even better. Maybe tidy up your room a little (the laundry bin distracted me, maybe have the camera face directly on your bed instead of at an angle, and just have the headboard of your bed and the wall in the background, its less distracting. Some kind of really plain backdrop (like a wall, or even hang up a bed sheet behind you) would keep attention on you and on the dresses you are reviewing. You should either create a "backdrop" with a theme to suit your channel or whatever, or just make it entirely plain and unnoticeable. This isn't make-or-break stuff but a little adjustment like that will actually make a huge difference!

The way you frame the shot is perfect though, thats a rookie mistake, chopping off the top of the head or sitting off center etc, it looks kind of off, but you didn't do that so great job. That really irks me when people are too close to the camera or too far away and they are either chopped up by the frame or are swallowed by the background because they aren't near the camera. You got the balance pretty good.

Like 974231 said, the content is pretty good, music is pretty good, even though you did go on a bit it actually didn't feel like the full 10 minutes either, do watch your time in future though, there was a lot to review though so you did pretty good.

Sorry about your disappearing shoes!! Another props to you for pointing out the shipping instead of just reviewing what you got in the order, its a pretty good idea to mention briefly things like that. Shipping times with Bodyline and stuff can be crazy so its always good to hear how others dealt with shipping.

I think you'll do well if you keep listening to advice and keep making videos and improving, but what you're doing so far is certainly not all that bad!

>Her boyfriend is half the video and says that we should buy replicas, so brands are forced to lower their prices
That's some assbackwards logic right there.

You have to take into consideration that Lolita is a niche fashion that doesn't have a big demographic to cater to, so buying replicas isn't only harming the artists' work but also the company. You have to take into consideration that not only are they selling you the brand, but also the quality and construction of the dress, plus the artists' work in the print, so really both of them are retarded.

Plus wasn't she bitching about getting kicked out of her comm because other lolitas were jelly she owned AP or something? idgi

Kota Bear is one of the few people on Youtube who actually gets me angry when it comes to Lolita, because despite the fact she is clearly into it, she tries pretty damn hard to change the rules of Lolita etiquette to fit her arbitrary needs and to compensate the fiscal needs for people such as her precious Crystal Chan.

The video with her boyfriend is one of those cases where again, the problem with replicas is barely touched before launching into ridiculous arguments supporting counterfeits. As if replica sales are going to make Angelic Pretty prices go lower. Any moron who believes in her shit deserves all of the negative reception they are bound to receive with her advice.

The only case where I feel it is somewhat appropriate (in a generous sense,) to buy a replica is in the case you can't find that dress, but do in fact have the intention to purchase the real one when it becomes available. However, I have also done this, and after discovering the general opinion of replicas, I must admit that this is a pretty big gray area, since even my $75 replica was money I could have used for another dress that isn't too far from even my poorfag reaches. That, and the whole afact that it's money to people who are making a quick buck off of the design someone with true artistic talent had to offer.

Kota is a moron, and I kind of wish I could speak to the comm who had her as a member. Her whole "experience" with a com was a long tale of exaggeration that was basically a non-anonymous Behind the Bows post.
She's a hypocrite in so many ways, I wish her channel got banned.

I'd also like to do tutorials such as basic ones for new lolis like navigating Mbok, how to set up feedback, organizing meets, and others that are maybe things like recipes to make for meets or gifts, small crafting tutorials and possibly some hair and make-up ones. I don't think so. Personally, I really enjoy that type of content, so I'm always looking for new people to watch. The most important thing is that you have some sort of perky/interesting personality, either that or your content is exceptional.

If you are serious and want to shell out some money, get a proper DSLR. Otherwise, a simple point-and-shoot should be fine.

I thought a replica was a 1:1 reproduction of an item (e.g. literally tracing a print, and putting the AP Logo on it), whereas a knockoff was in indirect copy (e.h., AP releases a sailor dress with constellation print, Brand B does the same, without being the exact print)

By "perky" I just mean kind of lively and energetic. Kota, for instance, and some other lolita YTers constantly sound like they're about to fall asleep, it makes watching very tedious.

Well, most YouTubers use the canon EOS600D/Rebel T3i, it's one of their entry-level DSLRs, and it has a flip-out screen, which is incredibly handy if you're filming yourself. Bonus, you can take some great stills with it.

But honestly, I think it's more important to be likeable and have interesting videos than ones that look professional. I know that lor only recently bought a DSLR, and she already had over 10k subs at that point.

Kudos for trying to get a professional production going, I feel like a lot of people ignore this.

Like said, a Canon T3i is the pretty standard entry-level DSLR for video. If you're looking for other possibilities, the big things you want to look out for is a external microphone jack, a flip out screen, and atleast 1080p video recording. Remember to have your shutter speed twice your frame rate, and keep your color profile flat if you'd like to do some color corrections later on.

I cannot stress just how important audio is, people tend to forget about this. Audio is less forgiving than video- People will stay to watch even if the video quality is below-average, but if you have shit audio, people tend to tune out immediately. Look into getting a external shotgun mic which can plug into your DSLR for better audio. If you still have audio noise, use a filter to get rid of it. There's a lot of great tutorials online as well of how to use programs such as Adobe Audition to really enhance voice quality. Taking the time to learn it will really add production value to your videos.

As for lighting, you can get away from buying a premade kit, and just set up a simple DIY one yourself. Pic related, these clamp light can be bought from Home Depot and work great for vlogs. Just put a couple of sheets of wax paper on top to diffuse it some more. Look up "3-point lighting" for good setup to light yourself. Natural lighting is also your friend, so utilize it the best you can.

I study television production myself, so if you have any questions regarding gear or whatnot, feel free to ask!

Oh yeah, for sure. I produce radio content as part of my studies, so sounding at least a little lively is a given for me. It's a real trial for me to get through videos of people who sound bored or have annoying voices. (I had to unsubscribe to Mortem3r because her voice annoyed me so much.)

Thanks so much for rec! I'll look into that.

Yeah, obviously personality and content is more important than pretty filming, but I feel like if I don't have that "spark", it shouldn't be too hard to sell on all my filming equipment if I give it a go and just don't have "it".

>>7974858

Thanks man, I like everything to look as polished as possible. Why try if I'm not gonna try my best, right?

I'm pretty new to editing film, but I have some sound editing experience. I have some vague grasp on what to do, I'm hoping to learn as I go and make use of the tons of tutorials out there, as well as pick the brains of the media department at my university.

Thank you so much for all the tips, man! Lighting is something I'm especially tense about, as I'm not sure how to get everything set up looking good quite yet. I also want to avoid the scary white pupil look some Youtubers get because of their lighting (Leighannsays is a notable one.) but I'm not sure if that's unavoidable.

No worries, best of luck.

As for editing, just remember to clean up your audio before editing the video. It's a nightmare to do it in reverse.

Audition is fantastic at removing noise, here's a quick tutorial on it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgvu4BCpS4s
And here's a great simple tutorial on getting your voice to that radio-quality.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6x__NthInRs

Apply those to your audio first before you begin editing. After that, you'd may want to look into how to L-Cut and J-Cut to cut down on dead-time in your video, it's the typical editing style of most major vlogs.

As for the lighting again, if you have the budget to get a lighting kit, then definitely do so. But considering this hobby can get pretty expensive, you may want to put that money elsewhere. I've gotten by with a few of those clamplights attached ontop cheap tripods, chairs, etc. Just remember that you'd want to look into getting a key light, a fill, and preferably a backlight as well.

As a last tip, remember to white balance your video correctly! Depending on the type of lights you use, and whether you use natural or artificial lighting, your whitebalance will change and can screw up the whole look of your video. I see this happen a lot with amateurs just getting into it. Though most cameras have a Auto WB settings, it's always best to set things manually for accuracy.

Some more tips:
-Make sure you get a sturdy tripod. I have a cheap lightweigt one, and it creates camera shake if you even nudge it, it's a nightmare.
- as other anon said, lighting is cheap. You can pretty much go to IKEA, get two lamps, some daylight bulbs, and that's it.
- The rode mic is pretty good if you're looking for a mic, also very popular among youtubers. Pretty much every single one I've seen uses this thing. It's also fairly affordable.

There's maybe 1-3 dresses I'm considering buying replicas of for those reasons. Granted besides the one, I don't think the others have texts and the prints aren't particularly"copyrighted" in the sense that say AP's usagi-chan would be since it's a character and none generic.
When they do come on sale they're up for $700-$1000+ and there's no way I'm willing to spend that much for a dress, especially one that's probably had 3+ owners. I can't support 2nd hand scalping like that.
I kind of think it's worse than replicas in a way since that's such a large amount of money not going to the brands, and usually people only sell those dresses because they wanted to scalp the newest release *cough* that new ap print *cough* or need it for bills.

I kind of want the iron gate op because I like the theme and fit, but I feel uncomfortable with the fact that it has mm name on it. I haven't really been able to find worn photos of it. The only one I saw was on a plus sized girl (I am very much not apart from being a bit tall)
The reviews I did find seemed positive, but the material is not the sort of chiffon that the real deal is.
I'd rather buy something that has the same theme and cut/fit though.

I considered one of the Claudia replicas because I just really want/wanted a navy bustier that didn't cost $100+(which the whole thing would have anyways, but it looked nice from the customer photos I saw) but I'm not getting it or wanting it.

Another is the chocolate rosette jsk. I'd buy it if there was a re-release or something similar released with the fit, pleats, and similar print, but it would probably sell out before I even turned on my computer (like freaking celestial jsk) and then scalped like mad.

And melty doughnut, again because I really like the fit and colors but I don't want to risk spending so much on something that doesn't appear often, likely has had multiple owners, and might be way too short and when I'm not sold on sweet. The replica I saw was nearly 1:1.

If there was to be anything else I'd really like some similar things of iw's none prints like Vilma and the ops with the loose fit and white collars that I rarely see selling.

All of my closet currently is either innocent world, baby, Lief, meta, and krad atm. I have a VM fairy frill jsk on the way, but I don't think it's very popular. I'll probably buy ap the next time I see something I want, but I'm wary of it being way too short.

To be honest, YouTube filming is one of the most simplest forms of video production that the type of camera really doesn't matter, so long as it has the basics of a flip-out LCD, a microphone jack, and shoots in 1080p. The main differences between a m43 and DSLR which involve live AF, bokeh, size, lenses, and sensor aren't considerable enough to make a different for YouTube, so don't worry too much about it.

Are you looking at a specific m43 model? If it makes you feel any better, I shoot on a m43 myself, a Panasonic DMC GH2 so I totally endorse them

Looks alright so far, but there's some areas I can suggest improving. (I'm a hugh nit-picky critic, so don't be offended at all by it)

Right off the bat, I notice the lighting. What's good is that you're blessed with a white-bedroom and a good source of natural light coming from your left, but this light has to be balanced out. It's serving as a good key-light, but without a fill-light you have some harsh shadows on the opposite side of your face. I notice as well that by the end of your video the sun seems to have either risen/set a bit, leaving a harsher look on your face which has clipped your whites.

It's great that you've taken the time to create a custom video thumbnail, but you can take it a step further! YouTube actually ranks videos according to the attractiveness of the video thumbnail, so bright, eye-popping thumbnails search higher and yield a better result. I would suggest spending a little more time enhancing the thumbnail you've got. Bring it in Photoshop and increase the saturation to make it pop. Add the entire title of your video within the thumbnail with some large eye-catching font. A little goes a long way in this sense!

You look great in your coord, which is a plus. I'm not a lolita myself, but I would trust a good-looking lolita over one who doesn't even have her shit together. Y'all looking kawaii as fuck.

(2/2)

As for editing, there's room to be tighten up. It's great that you're jump-cutting for time, but you're still leaving a significant break between cuts, making it more noticeable and awkward at times as if you had just ran outta things to say. I know lolita-related videos tend to be longer, but most people tune out of a YouTube video after the 4 minute mark, so try not to aim for anything past that.

I would also fix your camera setup to give yourself a better angle. At the moment the camera sits at a lower angle than yourself, making the audience look up towards you. Just like in photography, girls tend to look the least flattering from a low-angle, more flattering from a high-angle. Though a high-angle could be extreme for YouTube (Though Phillip DeFranco does it), you'd want to atleast match the eyeline of the camera (viewer).

Lastly, your audio has some general noise and makes you sound a bit hollow. Consider getting an external shotgun, just like what >>7974970 suggested is great. If not, you can follow the tutorials I posted here >>7974950 to really polish up your audio. People are more likely to tune out of a video with poor audio than poor video! Audio is always overlooked but is an essential aspect.

Don't get a DSLR for filming unless you have a cameraman. None of them have auto-focusing capabilities when filming and you will end up making a mess of it if you don't have at least some photography experience.

Yeah, that's true, should have mentioned that.
Some DSLRs do have auto focus (Sony A56 does for sure), but it's noisy, so you should turn it off anyway.

Honestly, it's not that difficult to learn how to pull focus, and one of the good things about DSLRs is their versatility, at least to me. Plus, since youtube videos are mostly sit-down and you don't move around much, it's fairly easy to stay in focus.

Dude it's nearly 2015, we've had DSLRs that can autofocus during video for a while now. Sony's translucent mirror DSLRs have been able to autofocus for years, and mirrorless cameras have nearly always been able to it.

Either way, auto-focus shouldn't be used at all for these videos. It's a vlog, it's you just sitting still on a chair talking to the camera. All you need is to have someone sit on the chair, set your focus, and you're done.

Cameras can be stupidly unpredictable with auto focus, and it can easily lose it's focus point and struggle to get it back. Not to mention if you're recording your audio directly into the camera, you're going to get a lot of noise coming from the machine focusing.

They're retards and deserve each other.
Replica makers are parasites feeding off the original brands. Sometimes the original brand is so big that it will hardly have an impact but this is definitely not the case for the niche brands in lolita. Stimulate the replica makers by buying their products and they will bleed the original brand dry. Once it dies they will just jump to another host and even replica-chans won't have anything to throw their money at, unless they jump ship too.

If you're going to buy a replica at least admit that it's kind of a sucky thing to do and don't pretend to be some moral crusader standing up for the rights of the masses. That's what annoys me the most.

with the crop sensors you're stuck with the plastic mount ring shit tier consumer grade leave it on auto-tier glass

with that said, unless you're in the canon 1D level of cameras you're better off shooting with any of the following recent smart phones (htc m8, samsung gs5, sony z3) shooting in 4K with natural light with the phone on a solid service where you're not moving front-back too often

Yep, videos like these are a relatively simple setup. I'd highly suggest setting the focus to manual for these videos, because the constant moving can really confuse your camera in regards to the focus.

If you can get some help from a friend, have your friend stand exactly where you plan to dance. Set up your camera and tripod at a reasonable distance you expect will be enough to accommodate the amount of movement you need. If you're only moving side to side, then you will remain in constant focus. The most important thing in this case is to consider the amount of steps forward and back you plan to take during your dance. This will indicate how wide your depth of field should be.

Set your focus to your subject, and have them move forward and back accordingly. If they step out of focus, you need to adjust your aperture down to accommodate. The higher the number, the wider the focus plane will be. Though the higher the number, the less exposed your shot will be as well.

If you are shooting entirely manual (which I mean, come on, automatic is for plebs) You want to adhere to the 180 degree shutter rule. This means, if you want to shoot at 30fps, which is the standard broadcast format for TV video, you have to double your shutter speed to 1/60 of a second. If you're shooting in 24fps, you'd want your shutter speed to be about 1/50 of a second, and so on. After setting your shutter speed and aperture to suit your needs, you will need to finish by equally exposing your shot via ISO, and you'll be set.

Probably not. Lolita isn't exactly a luxury fashion (is it? Jeeze, I'd like to know where/how you live where bills are nonexistent.

I don't make that much but here's my breakdown.
$940 - rent, utilities (internet included)
$200 - groceries (I eat the same thing 4-5x a row)
$60 - gas
$200 - car payment
$100 - renters/car insurance
$50 - phone
$150 - cat supplies
$300~$400 - other expenses
$300 - shopping for myself
~$2,400? I make $2800/month.

Whatever bonus and promotions I get goes into savings. I buy at least one brand item a month, whether it be a skirt or a dress. Whatever I don't spend rolls over onto next month's purchase.

I think the only real benefit to being popular in lolita is that you have a platform to talk to others with, and so it is just easier for popular people to talk to other popular people.
