Mine was a GT Dave, but I remember my friend's was GT John, but he couldn't manage to get yellow shoes before the con, so guess what he did.

He used shitty yellow electrical tape over white shoes, I was internally screaming

Most recent was Dualscar for an ancestor group my friends had planned. We had most all the ancestors at one point, but people dropped out one by one until I was a bit screwed because the group became Team Signless + Dualscar.

The crochet scarves kinda bug me more than they should. I've knitted several scarves before, and even though knitting is personally frustrating for me, the final result is worth it. But then again, knit scarves in garter stitch bug me too so...

Stockinette stitch scarves done in the round so there's not a wrong side are my favorite, or if you want to simulate that on a flat scarf you can do a k1 p1 rib that ends up looking like stockinette on both sides.

So, I am not really into the homsetuck fandom and know little to zilch about it.

However, I'm not here for conversion, but instead I would like to broaden my horizons of my shop. I know there are a lot of people who are interested in homstuck and one of the most popular aspects are the little weird candy corn horn things.

I currently am into making different kinds and shapes of horns as simple headware to sell at conventions. From plain painted, to ornately carved, to decorated in cuffs and jewels, and all manner of dangling things.

I would also like to sell simple homestuck horns since there is a market for it and some people just don't have the time, creativity, or are physically somehow lacking hands to make them themselves.


My question is, what are some of the most common shapes and sizes of horns for the trolls or what not? I have this list in the image, but I feel like some of these are fake.

Also, I make my smaller horns from resin and larger ones likely out of an expanding rigid foam.

To pass on savings to others, is there a way to make horns that have curves and carved details with one model or do I have to make both horns at the same time?

I was trying not to accidentally make OC character horns for my main supply (though I would likely offer the option for people to send me pics of their own OC characters to make).

I went of the MSPA wiki for a bit, but that really did not give me a good gauge of what the most popular styles are and what not.

So there's 36 troll characters in the comic (ignoring the two fantrolls who were made canonical, but they've never gained any popularity, and the two trolls released from the upcoming game, but they won't be cosplayed en masse until it's release). However, there's only 12 "families" of trolls (corresponding to the zodiac). All the families have similar horns, with the ancestors AKA parents having much larger versions of their kids aka main characters and the dancestors who are like alternative universe teen parents but just put them between the main characters and the ancestors for simplicity's sake.

I do some resin casting myself so if it were me and I wanted to save on molds, here's what I'd do:

1 mold for Vantas horns, just don't fill it up as much and/or trim off the bottom for the younger versions so they're shorter. These are symmetrical

same for Pyrope, Captor,, and Zahhak. Maybe Maryam but the proportion of the little sticky-outy part would change.

Other than that you're going to need separate molds for the ancestors (and their horns get HUGE) and possibly some for the dancestors, although there's more crossover with size. You should probably just start with doing the main 12 trolls.

Yeah, can't go wrong with the official art. the best references for the dancestors are going to be "talksprites". Ancestors only have a couple panels each in the comic, no quick references there.

It's not a bad idea but you should listen to those anons. The HS Fandom, usually the younger ones, are very dedicated to ripping apart any person who sells Homestuck merchandise without official approval from Hussie or Rachel.

Honestly if you want to make these horns, you should email them first. If you can do a mass production quantity, then they might partner up but I'm not sure.

They will yell at you in the face if you do AA booths. Granted it'll only be one in about twenty but it's still the fact people are willing to do that.

Just be careful and be prepared for what's to come because I wasn't when I worked for them.

If anything, do the generic shapes and don't paint them. Offer them as DIY horns. Ram horns, candy corn horns, cone horns, goat, name them different things rather than associate them with Homestuck. That's honestly the best way to go about it by going around it.

In my experience this is not as true as it was two years ago. I see many people selling HS-related things in AAs now (zodiac stuff especially) and there is little pushback. I sell on tumblr and get fewer smartass asks about it than I did even a year ago.

I'd agree don't bother to paint them, though, it'll save you a lot of time and effort and you might get some crossover fandoms that way too.

Okay, I admit that I am a little bit twisted and I would absolutely LOVE for some child to start yelling at me in an AA, but as I said I will not be labeling them directly as homestuck horns.

I am not likely going to email them anytime soon because for one, I don't feel like I am stepping on anyone's toes here with such a small thing (would be a laugh to call it a business or barely a shop yet), but you are correct here, that if I ever do start to build significant revenue that I start having sets of ancestor or dancestor horns as a norm or am able to mass produce, I will let them know that I would be willing to partner up.

pxs had potential, i think. if it had been functioned as a side material and stuck to worldbuilding or expanding on relationships and events, it'd be great. the problem is it quickly became one-offs with cheap jokes about the characters on the meteor that are better suited to being fancomics on tumblr and frankly aren't worth hiring people to create.

i think one of the biggest problems was there was, initialy, heavy implication it'd be what i said above, worldbuilding and expanding on characters and relationships. then it turned out to be cheesy jokes every other comic. in fact, i'm pretty sure there was some backpedaling about it? so people were put off by it and became bored with the content.

the other problem is, as i said, the content is very fancomicy and doesn't have the feel of being signed off on by the creator. it's usually not even the humor you'd expect from mspa. the closest ones to it are actually kc green's comics, but even then, it got old fast.

it's really a shame because it's SO much wasted potential. the homestuck universe is perfect for side projects and supplimentary expansion and i'm sure there is- or, was-a huge demand for it. the felt comic was fantastic and felt like a step in the right direction, then they follow it up with "lol aradia has big hair".

It really does feel fancomicy- and not even in a good way? Some of the tumblr fancomics broke typical comic rules or formats to be really interesting, like a good fan adventure. Even the lyricstucks are neat because of the weird long format letting you break panel borders and have different effects. MSPA itself is a great example of this medium-bending kind of story and presentation, so for me, PXS is a huge backward departure from that.

The comics are overproduced- lovely to look at, and sometimes even a fun read or at least enough for a chuckle. But the really really polished, professional coloring, lettering, etc, is very mainstream comic to me? Not necessarily a bad thing, but it's vastly different in feel and mood than MSPA. I'm sure Hussie writes scripts, but it does definitely feel like he's flying by the seat of his pants for most of it, which is kinda part of the appeal.

I think I went into PXS thinking it'd be more like a zine, short stories with different single authors put in an ongoing anthology, instead of a stable of artists they reuse. And weirdly seem to reuse in the same way? Definitely more world building and interesting backstory, less gags.

Even though I'm not a huge Felt person, I liked the Felt story because it seemed to be going somewhere, it had the time to explore and develop. Some of the 2 page comics could easily be compressed into one. The most recent Feferi/Kanaya/Aradia one could've been taken down to maybe six panels at most.

I really liked Damara for the same reason as the Felt, it was a nice departure from the shiny comics, and had enough time to build an interesting arc. I know a few of the artists in the stable are pushing for long formats with more backstory- pukind wanted to do a whole 24-page one on the Psiionic. I'd love to see more of that than the kinda kid's comic "set up...joke" ones right now, especially with the really talented artists they've hired.

As for Damara, IDK. I liked the idea but it had done better using Rufioh in Cronus' place. He too is a humongous douchebag and it'd been way more interesting to see him in that role rather than taking the easy route and squawking after tired fandom tropes of Cronus being a rapist and potential murderer... While not even getting his quirk right. Sigh. Same for the critical wh8le comic. It could have been used to explore the dynamics of a black relationship rather than fall back on "lol no one wants to mack on Eridan".

I honestly feel like a lot of fancomics and fanworks are actually better than these, at least by plot and writing. The current artists have talked about failed PXS pitch comics and they've all sounded more on the plot/narrative end of things, so it must be coming down from the editors.

Isn't Rachel the head editor? It wouldn't surprise me, she seems super out of touch with the fandom she's trying to market to. Punishing people for making products WhatPumpkin won't make and then offering to sell things the fans don't actually want.
