I thought I could pattern this by tracing a shirt I already owned, but I was so wrong. Both attempts came out incredibly small for some reason. Can anyone recommend a pattern for this? My measurements are 95-68-100/ 37-26-39 if that's relevant.

Kinda depends on the agreement or what the photog has said on their pages e.g. "I'm processing pics from x number of shoots before getting to this con's shoots".

Honestly though, I've waited for pics like 5 months and was about to raise a little hell after not even seeing 1 preview pic... however, he sent me pics just before I did and they were rather meh-tier. The photog also jumped around to process different shoots from cons after the one where he took mine even though he stated he did processing in chronological order. Never shooting with him again.

I'm going to go to a black tie charity dinner in a month or so. It's mostly full of old people (Rotarians if it helps) and I want to use this opportunity for networking. (Wanna get a better job than food service y'know).

Does anyone know styles I should look for? I don't want to affront the old men & women, but not look frumpy.

- Floor length (to make it look like you're taking black tie seriously. Tea or knee length is too cocktail)
- Don't show cleavage (because Rotary Club), but I don't think it has to be as conservative as the boat neck you're showing
- Don't do strapless or one-sleeve, but I don't see how anyone would be offended by cap sleeves
- Don't do bright colors. You want to be remembered for your conversation, not "oh yeah the one person wearing canary yellow"
- Unless you can borrow a dress, use Rent the Runway, because otherwise this will be really expensive.
- Given that you're there to network, don't do anything too fancy or expensive-looking that would make you look like a trust fund baby.
- Don't do anything that would upstage the old ladies.
- A full skirt seems like a bad fit for a Rotary event.

I've had to use up to 6-7 layers of it before. It is really time consuming as you have to wait til each layer is completely dry. Also, you will likely need to sand the shit out of your surface before you can paint it, but if you're happy to wait a while, it's really worth it.

Need advice on how to make this character's costume (still new to costume making). Got a hella amount of questions.

I'm thinking of making the shirt (blue) out of cloth or a similar material, and then making that white part out of fur, kind of like a circle that i can just put on over the shirt. For the other bits on his shirt (the yellowish "seams", and that silvery bit) look to be adornments on his shirt, but how would I overlay additional fabric without it looking poor? Also, the more I think about it, the harder this shirt looks like it'd be to put on. I'm thinking that I should put a zipper in that area.

As for the boots and gloves, they look shiny in some official art (but not this one for some reason?), so should I make them out of latex? How would I achieve that open ended look of the gloves without them just falling off my arms? I'd assume I'd make the gloves basically by just kind of pinning the fabric around my arm and then sewing it together.

As for boots, I'd just get some base boots and then make boot covers, but what material? In official art, (other than this one), the boots and gloves seem to be the same material. I'm thinking of doing the arrow type things on his boots using shoestrings or something.

For his belt, I'm thinking of taking two belts, one for the "base" (the one worn like a normal belt, the top one), and then taking another larger belt and attaching both ends by the "T-shaped" piece on the front of the first belt. Then I'd just attach the pouches and the longer "T-Shaped" blue shapes to the second belt.

What should I do for the pants? I'm completely lost on those. Should I try buying jockey pants? They're a solid color, and are NOT supposed to be shiny at all.

Please let me know if I've got the right idea on how to go about any of these items.

Model magic + mod podge + paint of your choice for the over-the-ear part. There are 9001 Homestuck horn tutorials on working with model magic.

To keep the upper part as light as possible, I'd use foam shoulder pads inserts or foam bra inserts (they sell them at Joann's) and covering it in mod podge (necessary to stop it from absorbing the paint) and paint. A foam insert will already have the curve you want in more or less the shape you want (you can cut it to be round) and be pretty much weightless.

>this is why we do not take advice from homestuckers

Honestly, I'd say do not use model magic anon, when dry it is the texture and durability of really flimsy craft foam and never fully hardens. Doesn't crack, no, but it dents and deforms with the slightest pressure/impact, say if someone walks into you in the dealers room, you bump your head, or you reach to readjust it and aren't careful enough. There's no need to sand it since it's completely smooth (though you wouldn't be able to anyways because it will just rip apart), but the durability is a major downside if you plan to wear it for more than a few hours and it always has a very "soft" look if you know what I mean, will not imitate hard plastic. That said, it's very lightweight, fast drying and easy to shape/paint, so it's really up to you depending on where and how long you'll be using it for. If you do, just be sure to strengthen it as much as possible, maybe put a couple coats of resin on top?

>> No.7972160

>>7972062
Maybe paper clay instead, then. It's like...the nicer, cooler adult version of model magic? It's also absolutely sandable. I know you're not making horns, but there's a lot of tutorials with people making horns out of all sizes with em and they can come out really nice. This might work for what you want?

First of all, do some basic reading up on sewing, different types of fabrics and closures and whatnot. Getting yourself a basic sewing book, DK's "sew step by step" or similar is a valuable resource at this stage of your learning, even if you just have to take it out from a library.

Becoming well versed enough to not have to just say things like that you're making a garment out of "cloth or a similar material" will help you immensely when planning out cosplays or going to buy your fabric and save you a lot of time/money on silly mistakes like making a garment out of the completely wrong fabric and having to restart.
>if you're wondering what i mean, cloth is as vague as saying fabric or textile, it is not a specific type of fabric
>unless you meant broadcloth, in which case, please do not make the shirt out of broadcloth

For the furry neck part, just make it seperately to put on over top of the shirt at this point, it'll be easier to get right. Where you see that little overlap towards the right hand side of it is where you'll close it with snaps or velcro

(also a quick tip, NEVER rely on the sticky backing of velcro to keep it on your material, the hold of the velcro to itself is stronger and will just rip it off your fabric when you try to open it. Always sew it down securely.)

>> No.7973530

>>7969926
(2/2)
You've pretty much got the right idea on the belt. Search up applique tutorials, it'll help you immensely on the details of what I assume are the holsters on the back (what you refer to as the T shaped things) and the silver on the shirt too. Interface your pouches so they don't look floppy and sad

No latex please. Under any circumstances. One cannot even sew latex. It's physically impossible.

Gloves will stay on just fine if the bottom part of the arm is fitted tightly and you properly interface/stabilise the wide cuff part. If you're having trouble with them sliding anyways, use dress tape. Also gloves are always harder to make than you think they are as a newbie, give yourself a ton of extra time and material. The whole tracing your arm/hand and sewing around it thing will not work unless the fabric is stretchy enough, and even still is tricky to get right with seam allowances and whatnot. Again, look up tutorials for this before you start.

Pants, go to a local value village/thrift shop and find something suitable, I think you can do that bit yourself.

Broadcloth can vary a bit in both price and quality, so sometimes it's better/worse than others. Usually I only use it for mockups, some linings and underskirts, but I've heard it can be good for appliques sometimes (it frays so easily though, I've yet to confirm this), and I on occasion will use the better quality (thicker, and with little to no visible lines) for making bias tape

The book I recommended (Sew Step by Step, by Allison Smith, DK collection) does have a chapter on many, well over 50, of the different kinds of fabric available, along with advice on how to cut, best seam finishing method, what needle/thread is best suited to it, pressing instructions and what it's used for. The whole book is a good resource for beginners, but there are sections that people of all skill levels will find really handy, imho

Aliexpress isn't one whole homogeneous site, just to let you know anon. Think of it like ebay (except a million times slower and with free shipping), you've got some good sellers and some bad sellers. To figure out whether something has a good chance of being nice quality, just look at their seller and item feedback.

This seller in question has pretty good feedback (if you're worried about the copypasted "Excellent!" or "Great!" in multiple reviews, that's just the generic review left when a customer rates it 5 stars and doesn't write any comment), but no reviews or feedback on the specific item you linked yet. So it's up to you whether or not you'll take a chance on being the first to buy an item

Shop is here.

http://kawayicos.taobao.com/

But I can't seem to find that cosplay in general.

The reason why I said that is because the stock photo is the exact same one from the website and it even says taobao lol.

Not everything on Ali is Taobao though but a majority of it is from the actual site or use the same stock photos so I'm retracting my previous statement to that.

I say buy it but if you want a better quality one:

If it's further back, the wig might be too small and is creeping up the back of your neck. You can expand wigs, but it tends to be more effort than it's worth. Use french/wig pins to liberally to keep it from shifting.

If i'm making really odd shaped shoes how could I go about that? I was thinking insulation foam and bondo but at the same time it sounds like a terrible idea. Or maybe foam like pic related

>> No.7981190

>insulation foam or bondo

No. Shoes need to flex and accommodate for stress. I would never recommend rigid materials like insulation foam or bondo unless you're using them on parts that will not flex/stress or for big-ass bulky pieces like mech feet.

The green cushion foam is the way to go for something similar to what is pictured since it will flex with your feet as you walk and move without crumbling or stress fracturing. As you can see in their image, they simply used a base shoe and covered/shaped using the green foam. From that point on, you would make a shoe cover in an appropriate material to finish the look. Basically you buy it by the yard at fabric stores, cut it with an electric carving knife or scissors etc. It can be trimmed and smoothed down for shaping or since it's foam, crammed into shoe covers if the material is a little stiffer and no one will see the less-than-precise foam base. I made elf shoes the exact same way this person did except my character's design was not as exaggerated so I only had to shape the pointed toes.

Do you have any crafting skills? Sewing, woodworking, painting, etc? Even if you buy a costume, you'll still need to do other things to make it look cute (hair/wig style, makeup, tailoring the fit, proper shoes, ironing) so make sure you're game for that.

Lots of people go to cons in regular clothes too; there's really no reason to dress up if you're not 100% confident in what you're wearing. If you're not confident in your clothes, you will in no way be confident enough to flirt with your senpai.

No, do not do that. It will rub off [on other people] in a hour. Use gloves, contour with paint, glue fake nails on the tips. Don't use so much paint it gets crusty and cracks. You could probably use trimmed nails for the bits on the knuckles.

Yes, absolutely. Paint looks great for the first hour, or if you only plan to use it for a photoshoot. Fact is, your hands are constantly moving, sweating and touching things. If you are wearing this for a con, these actions will be even more common. Think about all the times you reach for your wallet, take a picture, pick up merchandise, or even point to something at cons. In addition, those claws are going to be a pain in the ass for the same reason. Stick some fake nails on then try to pick up a sheet of paper.

Gloves give you the benefit of being able to remove them when you need to. You can eat pizza without worrying the grease is going to take your makeup off. You can pick up prints without your claws getting in the way or your paint mucking it up. I have no idea what color they are supposed to be, but the dancewear fabric section usually has nice 4-way stretch in tons of colors. It also tends to be forgiving enough that you can just trace your hand, cut two, stitch together, then trim to a scant seam. Flip and you've got yourself a glove.

>> No.7983696

>>7982927
Then you should dress up. If you go as something fairly generic (maid, schoolgirl, Pokemon[trainer]) or don't put extra effort into the details, don't expect everyone to fawn over you and take photos. Cosplay, imo, should be primarily for yourself, not to impress the other attendees. Not to say go out there in cheap satin that's too small and has frayed edges - just make sure you get that self-esteem boost right when you put it on, so you don't keep waiting for people to start snapping photos.

I mean, if you really want you can send something to my throwaway up there ^ but my response will be on here. Seagulls like to see pictures, don't be too shy about posting here.

Hello /cgl/. I was wondering if I could have anyone's help with some craft work.

So, for Christmas, I want to craft a necklace for my fiancé. I want to replicate a necklace from a game that we both love. However, I'm really, really inexperienced with any kind of craftswork, really. I was wondering if someone could point me out to a good tutorial or if they good quickly summarize a good way of going about this.

Pic related, it's the necklace I want to make. The ball is just a glass bead. I plan on going to Michael's in a week to get whatever I might need. Should I just get like a kind of thing brown rope and somehow tie it around the bead? Would I use glue? Wouldn't that look awful? Basically, is there any way I can make this and have it look good?

Thank you all very much in advance.

That all depends on your budget and timeframe. If you want to go out all, and money and time are not an issue, then the best suits and helmets are made by Aniki Cosplay. But, the wait list is long, and it is costly.

After that, you can buy helmets from varying ranges on eBay and amazon, and those range from really crappy to decent, and the decent ones can be around $300-$400, before the suit.

Cheap zentai suits can be found at many zentai websites and cheap costume sites, but they look awful, and often don't include things like boots or gloves.

I'm having one heck of a time trying to figure out how to make this thing. The body armor and clothes I think I can figure out, but the helmet has me stumped, as well as the gloves. Maybe there's an easy solution, but as a complete novice I have no clue.

I've looked up tutorials on helmet making with foam, but the thing mentioned needing a head cast, which I don't have (it stated that an average wig head would probably be too small...) and some other stuff that I don't have access to since I live in a small apartment temporarily. I still really wanna make this thing though. Any suggestions, Gulls? I've considered cardboard, but I'm worried about it looking/being flimsy. Ski and skateboard helmets make good bases to build off of. You can usually get used ones for cheap from resale sporting stores and online since they're not really supposed to sell them.

I'm having trouble figuring out how many yards of fabric I'm going to need to make this cloak. I guess I should make it a half circle cloak, but since it's so long, I suppose I'll have to cut the fabric into triangles (with the shortest side being rounded) and them sew them together.
After a quick sketch, I calculated that with a fabric that's 1.53 yd wide (what you usually find in my country), I'd need about 7.3 yds ((not including the hood and the stuff on the front) if I cut the cape into three triangles 1.53yd wide at the base and four triangles 0.52yd wide at the base, with each triangle being 2m tall (I'm 1.72m tall, so I need it to be pretty long
Does this seem an okay amount, or did I completely fuck it up ? Also, what kind of fabric should I use ? Velvet would look nice, but the nap will mean I'll have to use even more fabric, so I was thinking of maybe using twill, duck cloth or flannel

...so I got my first batch of body paint. Kryolan Aquacolor in 510 (purple) and R 27 (blue). I'm practicing and trying to get used to applying it. I have a few spots on the back of my hand that I applied with a dipped q-tip and then set with some setting spray (not specific kryolan brand, some urban decay spray that's formulated for conventional cosmetics)

>> No.7987624

>>7987609
I would go for a larger area to test, such as the back of your hand / your entire hand. Body paint is the type of thing that's sweated off or rubbed off. You might want to try something other than a q-tip if you're planning on applying it to your body (e.g. a sponge). A primer will make it stay on longer, but you can do without it depending on how long you plan to wear it. What's important is setting it. You might want to consider powdering it (personally, I find it rubs off less when powdered compared to setsprayed).

Paypal limited my account. Take my word for it that I won't be able to appeal the limitation. However, they said that because of this they're not giving me back my money for 180 days! How do you think I can get around this?

Thanks anon. I'm still indecisive though.

This is how her hair looks down and sprite wise since that picture wasn't big enough.

Rather new cosplayer. I love LoL and I love the new Ori skin. I feel I can easily do the costume, wig, and Poro accessory but I don't know how to approach the skirt. Any suggestions?

I hope to have it done in a month in time for PAX South. I plan to do a mix of her in game model with the splash art to hopefully have a happy medium. I hate carrying props but the Poro is so adorable and it really isn't Orianna without her ball. Wish my favorite champs could look kawaii as that.

It would be cool if you could make the key in her back move as well. I've seen a couple of other Orianna cosplayers do it. I think that one used a music box motor or something?

Oh god that'd be so complex. I'll keep it in mind but it may have to wait until round 2 of trying out the costume. I plan on buying materials and getting started this weekend.

I wish you luck! I'm thinking of doing poro rider sejuani. I make poro plushies to sell normally so I would love to make a giant one that I can put on wheels and can ride around on it.

Approach it more like armor than a normal skirt. Look up EVA foam armor tutorials, and that should give you a good starting point.

Like >>7990382 said, approach it like armor. I would do something like >>7989803 with EVA foam, but the first image actually makes the skirt look slightly transparent. Something like a frosted acrylic sheet cut up and etched would look good if that's the look you're aiming for.
