They're a pretty odd bunch. There was a club at me high school.

One guy was in my Pre-Calc class and I'd pretty much just talk to him about current events, Politics, etc.. Guy wanted to be a Poli-Sci Major, he wanted to be a Politician. Due to our many conversations, we would do nothing in class while everyone did homework. He'd usually get called on for not doing his work and getting C's on test, as a result he "hated" me (This will be explained later). There was another one of them who would wear one of those wool soldier's trench coats. They were mainly obsessed with that one Fan-Fic where each of the main characters were at war with each other or something.

Now the hate my convo buddy would express would be in the terms of saying awful shit like "I hate you, ya son of a bitch, have a good day", he'd usually randomly go out of his way to come say these things to me "If I was talking to someone he'd probably say something like "Fuck you, you're a terrible a person, don't listen to his lies" Then walk off.

Oh fuck, that reminds me about the cringe shit that would occur in senior year. There's not much story to this so I'll keep it short.

Then you get adult men hogging this shit for themselves as how manly and self-confident they are because they dare to admit they fap to cartoon ponies, maybe because they haven't had a chance to prove their manliness the more traditional way before.

There's been adult guys into little girl anime for decades, but you don't see any Precure fans making a scene how they're MEN into this GIRLY THING because cutesy stuff is completely normal in anime in general. But that's not the same with pony fanbase since cute stuff is quite rare in Western media. That's why bronies think they're special snowflakes and they feel like they identify as something, so they have to show it as cringeworthy as possible. It's not enough to just enjoy the cartoons, you just have to build an entire cult around it. Nothing wrong with that either but when socially awkward person starts feeling more brave that way the execution will be bad.

I have encountered so many of these girls in my lifetime. But she still piped in constantly about the water temple and Navi. She kept saying LoZ was her favourite video game series of all time even though she only claimed to ever play OoT. Shameful.

I just hate fake gamer gurls. They're making the rest of us look bad. There was a thing on tumblr not too long ago about not judging fake fans because they're just new or something and it's the biggest pile of bullshit. No one will hate someone because they're new. Ill come out and say it - i watched a couple seasons of MLP. Its a pretty decent cartoon, even if it did eventually lose my interest the animations excellent and it can be really funny. But i keep up with some pony artists and some inside jokes - because i like it.

But i have never felt comfortable describing myself a brony, because that just seems so fucking retarded. I like lots of stuff. I dont call myself a bender because i watched Avatar: TLA (Though now i totally will if anyone asks, because thats a great title). People who have turned liking MLP into their actual identity are - to put it mildly - really fucking creepy.

And i think the problem with MLP is that i think it attracts a much greater portion of real fucking weirdoes compared to most fandoms, and they can get really fucking vocal because fuck - once you admit to liking a little girls show you might as well go whole hog.

So on one side you have people who are just like 'yeah, its a decent cartoon. funny, watch it. Its kinda wasted on kids.' and then the other side, screaming about how being a brony changed their lives and basically stuffing fedoras into their newly purchased Pinkie Pie bras.

I hide in the corners of the fandom, flinching when someone claims to be an otherkin pony.

I'm so glad my local FGC is so chilled out, some of the stories and attitudes I hear about in the states sound like nightmares, where most of the guys expect you to drool over them/their knowledge for being experienced players while they patronise you about how you play. What is DP/2B anyway?

Most of the guys in mine are really friendly and supportive. At first a few were obviously suprised or apprehensive at a new and female player showing up, but I've never been ridiculed, or aggressively questioned about my gameplay and 'motives'. While it probably helps that I'm not particularly ugly or attractive, I don't think I'd be treated too differently even if I was amazingly gamer-gurl-stream-for-megabucks sexy or super uggo. There's like this mutual understanding that everyone at casuals or tournaments is there to play the games and compete/improve, not pick up a gf or something.

This last con was basically a bunch of isolated incidents that snowballed into the clusterfuck that was our weekend. You ever watch Seinfeld? You remember the 'Summer of George' episode? Well this was a Convention of George. Our miserable little party includes:

"Steve", a close friend I met in my sophomore year who is one of those strapping, friendly types that's so good-hearted he'd put Captain America to shame. I originally got to know him in the hopes of dating him and was sorely disappointed to learn he's as queer as the day is long. Through Steve I met a guy I'll call Oscar--as in The Grouch (he's really sarcastic and has a bad case of Bitchy Resting Face). He has his fair share of baggage, but he's a good guy. Steve has really, really liked Oscar for a while now and just before the con, Oscar told me he's got it pretty bad for Steve as well. He's not used to feeling this way about other people and as a result has no clue what to do with himself. They're both holding back for various reasons which is frustrating as hell sometimes, but they're adults and I'm no matchmaker.

Sampson and Delilah, a friend from high school and his bitchy girlfriend. This was my first time meeting Delilah. She's one of those girls who thinks she's a main character from a Jhonen Vasquez cartoon and claims the only 'cute' thing she likes is Hello Kitty. With them, they bring New Girl, a friend Sampson made at his college who I had also never met. I assumed that she and Delilah were good friends at first, but that didn't seem the case.

And of course, yours truly, the poor soul caught in the eye of this shitstorm.

Sampson, Delilah, New Girl and I have been to going to conventions since about high school, so we're no strangers to the con scene and have made some very good memories there. Steve and Oscar are totally new to it; it's their first con. Oscar's into games, anime and other genres that are at-home in a convention, but Steve isn't too terribly familiar, but interested and has liked what we've shown him.

We meet Sampson, New Girl and Delilah at the con and start off in high spirits. Sampson seems like he's going to get along great with Steve and Oscar, I'm excited to see him again and New Girl is really quiet, but seems nice. The only dark spot is Delilah. She seems irritated by any and all attempts Steve and I make to get to know her and is determined to be as unfriendly as possible to pretty much anyone but Sampson, but that was fairly minor. Since it's the first night, we planned to explore for a little while before settling in and Steve might as well be Jack Skellington in Christmas Town he's so fascinated by everything. He makes the mistake of asking an obvious furry about their "costume". What follows is an awkward conversation in which Steve is introduced to some of the worst parts of furrydom by the over-friendly, over-sharing individual we have encountered. He hasn't even been here a whole day and has seen yiffing with his own eyes.

It's only an hour or so into the time we spent wandering around and already Delilah is starting to work my nerves. She has something negative to say about everything and everyone. It was all just cattiness for the sake of being catty. She talked like she knew everything there was to know about lolita and cosplay, but that really wasn't the case. I don't know much about lolita myself, but I've lurked here long enough to know that a.) scratchy lace is a big no-no and b.) gothic lolitas can smile while they have their picture taken if they damn well please.

She also kept talking about con creepers and yeah, while some of the guys that approached us were legitimately creepy, some where just being friendly. Oscar was clearly as annoyed as I was and Sampson seemed embarrassed by her behavior. Steve is politely ignoring her and trying to get shy New Girl to come out of her shell a bit. We take a rest and sort of people watch in the lobby while we debate where to eat. New Girl excuses herself to go to the restroom. She returns with an uncomfortable look on her face and some creepy forty-something with a pony tail in tow. From what she later told me, he spotted her as she was trying to get in the girl's room. He stopped her and complimented her, she chatted politely with him a minute and went in. This stumpy bastard waited outside the door for her and followed her back to us. He keeps talking to her despite her repeated, gentle attempts to get him to leave. The whole time he's staring at her boobs. I firmly tell him to respect the fact that she's not into it and leave. Steve lends his support, but the guy still isn't taking the hint. He asks to take her picture before he goes (New Girl isn't in cosplay) and finally Oscar snaps and thoroughly tells him to fuck off. The creep skulks away. There's a moment of silence before Delilah launches into to a time where she had a similar experience that was "way worse". Oscar, having reached his limit of fuckery for the evening, tells her that she can have the Olympic gold medal in sexual harassment if she'll stop talking about it and says that she's ruining everyone's good time with her constant bitching. She gets pissy and fumes in silence for a bit and we finally decide that our best option is Applebee's.

Sampson and I tried to make dinner a cheery affair, but it was a tough job. Delilah was still pissed at Oscar for telling her to stop her behavior and so she spends the rest of the evening trying to instigate something with him.

New Girl is utterly miserable and barely eating. Steve is visibly uncomfortable because the whole damn thing sucks and he wants to jump to Oscar's defense because he's had the hots for him since the dawn of time. Towards the end of the meal, Sampson starts getting mad because Delilah is being so shitty. A fight is clearly brewing between them and New Girl is so uncomfortable she asks to ride with us. On the way back to the hotel, Sampson texts us and says he's sorry and to apologize to Oscar and New Girl and Steve for him. We all agree it's not his fault and I felt bad for New Girl so I ask her if she wants to hang out in our room for a while to take her mind off things. I tell Sampson our room is open to him too if he needs it.

We go back to our room, watch some stuff online and on TV, get to know each other and just generally have a good time. New Girl loosens up a little bit and we all have a few drinks and it's decided that she should stay the night with us. We were sleeping two to a bed and New Girl seemed more comfortable sharing with me, so that meant Oscar and Steve were together, too. Oscar was really awkward about it since he's such a dork, but undoubtedly secretly pleased. I text Sampson and let him know. Apparently, he doesn't see my text until morning because he's in the middle of having a huge fight with Delilah and at some point he storms out and forgets his phone. Apparently, she felt like we were all ganging up on her 'for no reason' and was angry he didn't defend her.

Morning came and Sampson and Delilah had tentatively made up. She was sullen and prickly and he had a forced sort of brightness to him, but for a while everything was better. We went to a few panels, saw some good cosplays and bought stuff in the dealer's room.

Then the world decided that Oscar needed a hug. I don't remember how many people tried to coerce him into hugging him or just tried it without asking over the course of the day, but it was a lot. Maybe it only seemed that way because Oscar was having none of it. Some of them were pretty pushy and it got way past the point of being funny. One human of indeterminate gender in shitty visual key gear and a surgical mask followed us for a good five to ten minutes demanding a hug. There were a few con creepers today, too. Delilah seemed to revel in her disgust and New Girl was genuinely uncomfortable.

We break for lunch and Delilah wanted to go to a panel and an event afterwards to meet a voice actor. Sampson volunteers to go with her, but the rest of us weren't interested in going so we decided to roam around some more and go to another panel. The panel was great, but unfortunately the person sitting next to us smells of piss, dumpster and hot ass. We're all crammed together between two large people and squished as hell. When we meet up with Delilah again, she's parading around a figurine she's been lusting after that Sampson bought her as a makeup present. She's happy for a little while, but it doesn't last.

There's a rave at the con and we decided to go. Sampson invites us to their room to pregame and the place is a fucking mess. Most of it is Delilah's, but Sampson isn't a neat-freak himself. Delilah is back to being bitchy again and seems to mostly be taking it out on New Girl and oddly enough, Steve for some reason. They don't have as much to say as Oscar or me, so that may be part of it. She takes forever to get ready while she snaps at all of us and we're all getting progressively more tipsy as we wait on her. She attempts something like old school Visual Kei makeup and it comes out a mess. She tries to make Sampson wear some too and he clearly doesn't want to.

The rave was terrible. And not terrible in the 'the music sucks and there's hardly anyone here but I'm pleasantly drunk and surrounded by people I like' sense. It was just regular-type terrible. A hamplanet zeros in on Steve immediately and spends the evening following him everywhere, trying to grind on him and entice him back to her place with promises of more liquor. Steve's repeated assertions that he's gay do not help matters. All she says is "Oh I love yaoi!" and continues to twerk against him like a walrus in its death throes. They aren't even on the dance floor. At some point in the night, a huge drunk guy slammed into me and elbowed me in the side. That pretty much killed it for me. I go join Oscar and chat with him. He's not much of a dancer and seems to be getting a lot of calls on his phone. He's ignoring them, but doesn't seem happy about it. Steve tries to hide from his new found friend by coming over as well. After a few minutes, New Girl comes over from where she had been dancing with Sampson, Delilah and a few other people. Apparently, another fight was brewing because some girl was flirting with Sampson and Delilah thought he was interested in her. I go to tell them we're leaving. The evening is topped off by Steve's new friend trying to glomp/make out with him.

I'm not exactly sure what she was planning because I wasn't there, but the result was that she sent him crashing into Oscar and they almost all wound up on the floor, crushed beneath the weight of a drunken planet in a leotard. It's at that moment we all decide to take our leave. It's getting late-ish anyway. As we're headed back, Sampson and Delilah are half-arguing about the girl still, but manage to patch it up. Poor New Girl winds up getting sexiled from the very room she helped pay for to sleep with us again. Delilah tells us all to enjoy not getting laid and goes off. We're all pretty tired and disgruntled so we go to sleep.

A couple of hours later, Oscar's phone rings. It's about three in the morning by this point. Of course it wakes us all up and when he answers it, his side of the conversation is exasperated, frustrated and distressed. Oscar hangs up and lets us know that he's got to go help his brother.

Remember when I said that Oscar's got his fair share of baggage? Apparently, his family is part of it. He's pretty much the only stable one and his parents, though they have plenty of money, have pretty much dumped the task of taking care of his big brother and younger sister on him. His brother is an absolute scumbag and a deadbeat from what I've heard. Oscar's brother frequently calls him drunk and/or coked up in the small hours to ask for some favor. This time it was both. Not only that, but he was demanding to be picked up and driven home from a strip club--both of which were out of the way of our hotel. On top of that, he wanted to be taken to Waffle House--which I'm assuming Oscar paid for. Oscar returns at half past six, sort of face plants on the bed and says he's probably going to spend most of the day sleeping.

Steve, New Girl and I had unwisely decided that it was so early we might as well stay up and so we were pretty beat, too. Steve had been worried about Oscar and too pissed at his shitty brother to sleep and he had the beginnings of a hangover, so he was a bit more worse for wear than New Girl and I were. We tried to rally after breakfast, but after a panel and getting some final wish list items from the dealer's room, we were too tired to do much else. Worse still, I was beginning to show early signs of having contracted the con plague. So I bought a shit ton or orange juice and returned to bed. New Girl joins us after an hour or so because Sampson and Delilah are fighting AGAIN. After a couple of hours, Sampson comes in too. According to Sampson, they got into a screaming match and Delilah fucked off into the sun or wherever she went.

It was at that point that I got really sick (I couldn't even keep anything down) so I'm kind of fuzzy on the details after that. The only thing I remember about the next few hours was lots of vomiting, being sick to my stomach and lapsing in and out of consciousness. Orange juice does not taste as good coming up as it does going down. Suffice to say this was no ordinary con plague but one hell of a stomach flu. We checked out as soon as I was feeling up to stand went our respective ways. I was sick for about a week, Sampson and Delilah broke up a few days afterward and Steve and Oscar are still playing the longest game of gay chicken ever. I got a good friend from the experience in New Girl, but it still sucked.
