The most ridiculous "cosplay breakdown" I've seen so far. $300 for makeup and brushes just for this costume? Separate from the "costume makeup" category?

And, spending $78 on that busted ass, inaccurate wig. Why.

>> No.7946041

Where'd all that money and time go? 200 hours... for that? If that's all I could do in 200 hours, I would be too ashamed to post some "breakdown".

I second this

I'd be embarassed to brag about a 1k+ cosplay for 200+ hours and ending up with nothing impressive. I especially crack up at the 78$ wig because you can literally get 15$ to 30$ accurate ones.
Don't even get me started about the make up, how do you spend so much and end up with so little on your face? I will only change my mind if there's proof she's used body painting to be light skinned and even that, you can get body paint for a lot cheaper and sealing.

Her worbla and armor looks nice but this isn't even a particularly great Aela costume. The fabric doesn't seem to have any depth or wearing. And yeah, that wig and makeup are awful.

i feel like she's one of those people who works on it on and off for about a month and a half but just counts every day as about 5 hours of straight work even if she's just like sitting in front of the tv slowly adding details to something, stopping for dinner, losing motivation, coming back for a bit, etc
yeah someone might spend '5 hours' a day working on it, but you're rarely actually doing 5 hours of work on it each day. there's a distinction there, and it's not one i think a lot of that tier of cosplayers actually take into account

>> No.7946056

This is quite frankly reflective of some casual who has rushed in and just bought a ton of materials without actually thinking and planning out the cosplay before they even start. Or alternatively, someone who has money to waste. Never have I just launched myself into a costume without at least working out the costs of materials, because I don't have the money to waste on blowing it off.

I wouldn't include the makeup and brushes ($350) for the same reason she didn't include her glue gun, etc. Those are assumed base materials.

That said, $1000 doesn't seem unrealistic. If anything, I have been complaining for years that people constantly underestimate the costs of their costumes, because they forget about notions like zippers, any bought shoes or special needles, shipping/handling cost, etc.

For example, on (low) average give or take, a wig plus s/h: $50, shoes $25, contacts + s/h $25 = a base of $100 per ANY costume and that hasn't even included any materials. And that is a low estimate.

tl;dr people underestimate their costume breakdowns all the time, this is extreme but more close to the norm.

exactly. Don't include the price of "doing business". I mean shit, what if you went to get your hair cut and your stylist charged you for a whole bottle of shampoo, conditioner, new scissors, new towel, new hairspray, etc. on top of their hourly rate?

These girls look stupid as fuck

Not to mention they are stopping any company from hiring them dead in their tracks over their bullshit pricing. If the ultimate goal is to get paid to cosplay, a cursory glance through a lot of these tumbrs make them look like fucking jokers that no company is going to pay for.

I don't see it like that. As a cosplayer who's made over 80 costumes, this merely satisfies a piece of the curiosity side of my obsession.

showing off to friends and family vs showing off to internet strangers.... sometimes the two aren't even exclusive, depending on your motives.

Priorities.

>> No.7946373

I agree with you. One thing to keep in mind is availability, and where as I live next to a giant fabric district and can walk there and haggle the price of stretch pleather down to $8/yd, someone from a different part of the world might have to pay premium price plus shipping and customs to get the same material.

Wigs especially are expensive, even to import, in many south american countries. Or getting false lashes like someone mentioned in this thread - perhaps they had to order online and they were $15 instead of the $2 I can get them from the korean knockoff place down the street.

Also, I'm sure a lot of these cosplayers have day jobs and money to burn on convenience, so they don't have to spend hours bargain hunting and can buy whatever they come across first on the internet. For them, it probably doesn't even cross their mind. Cheap enough for them.

I like to look at these prices and consider where the person lives, and marvel at the price difference before I jump to conclusions that they are lazy bargain hunters.

I didn't say lucrative jobs, I just said "jobs". And when it comes down to crunch time, many cosplayers I know have paid extra to get materials shipped express when they normally wouldn't, or money on last minute fixes, hence the "convenience".

Not by a longshot.

Crayola model magic isn't 10$, it's maybe 6.75 tax included in Poutineland
25$ on wood glue only is also VERY excessive.
Also not buying that paints and varnish costed 40$.

20$ for got2B, probably the hairspray only too.

Also, have you ever bought paints and varnish? You can't knit while watching tv, unless you have been doing chain mails your whole life, which is not her case. So she wasted a lot of hours with the TV.

What I'm not understanding at all is how come someone with her experience and being an Industrial Design student (or something similar, can't remember exactly the name of her career) worked 200 hours for that. She didn't even make the bow (she could use that as an excuse too).

UK fag here, I can vouch for this out of second-hand experience. I had two flatmates during uni who made and sold jewellery. One of them came back one day with a shit ton of stuff and announced that she had stolen it from the local craft store. From then on, they both went to the store on a weekly basis and came home with at least £100 of materials.

One night when I was sitting in my room, one of them burst in crying her eyes out and talking about how the other one had got caught stealing and was taken away by the police. She basically shit herself because she knew that she was probably going to get pulled up as well. Next day, other flatmate comes home, announces she has to go to court but didn't rat out her friend. She ended up having to do ~200 hours of community payback, which the police decided would be best served going into schools talking about the risks of shoplifting, so she was mortified. Not only that, she now has a criminal record for something dumb and is already struggling to find a job as it is.

I'm so confused. Half of these wigs they're listing as $50+ look just as shiny and frizzy as a $15 eBay wig. Some look really good, but the ones that don't... really really don't. Are they lying about the price, or got ripped off, or are expensive wigs sort of overhyped? I've never shelled out for an expensive wig so I guess I don't have a good frame of reference to answer this myself.

Google coupons for major chain craft and fabric stores they always have good coupons. Though read them carefully. That 50% off any item Joann coupon is great but they might also have a 25% off that fabric you need sale that week and you can't stack those coupons. However they also have 20% off everything which does stack on sales.

Look at your character's clothes and think if you could make some parts from thrift clothes that already exist. Be careful with this one. Not all materials work for all genres. You can get away with parts made from tshirts for a poor JRPG adventurer but not for a royal princess' garb

Do you really need fancy materials like Worbla for those arm bracers or could you find a big plastic bucket and cut the shape our with a craft knife and primer and paint it.

Check craigslist to see if there's people trying to sell big loads of fabric, trim and thread while cleaning out grandma's house.

eBay wigs from china are incredibly cheap with decent quality these days. Just know what to look for in terms of shine. Or sign up for facebook groups like US Cosplay Wig Swap.

I think this whole fashion of showing how much people spent is stupid.
I'm a cosplayer and If asked I'm not affraid to say how much I think I've spent on a costume but I honestly don't like or fell like I have to put it out there. It is my money and I worked for it, it's my business, you get what I'm saying?

I fell that it's like "look how much I've spent!" or "Look! I made this and only spent this! amazing right? : D"

The only good part is that I thought everytime" I spend to much" (I usually do detailed costumes) and I'm laughing so bad on how much people spend, and most of the time in simple stuff. Guess that's what happens when you're from a "poor country" and have to move your ass to find the most creative/cheaper solution including sometimes making your own embroidery and other stuff by hand.

Says the guy who was involved with that Journey Beyond shit and basically begged for money to go to Blizzcon. No reason to care how much it costs when other people are paying for it, I guess.

>bad costume
>cost over $1000
>Hero of Cosplay
I honestly dont see how this could be worse. The wig is plasticky and cheap, the makeup is bad, the costume is flat and inaccurate, the bow is even worse than what you would find at a Halloween store. She wouldnt have had to spend $50 on fur if she made the boots accurate in the first place. The armors are the only decent parts, the rest is garbage. At least Monika used to make good costumes even if shes an awful person. Now shes clearly pandering to pc gamer crowds and isnt even trying to make good costumes anymore.

Essentially just look for theatrics level makeup. No over priced ass casual MAC (with admitting to bias against the brand), invest in some Kryolan instead. Our local theatric makeup/wig store is run by a few people including a guy who does occasional drag and it seems like there's one in everey theatrics store so just tell them what you need and they'll help you out.

Not to mention it is tacky as fuck
like if someone compliments your outfit you don't launch into how much you paid for it (unless it was a remarkable bargain, I guess)

uses 40$ to base shoe which won't be visible when any already owned old pair of shoes or second hand ones would have worked just fine. Okay then.

Sometimes people don't have time to make heeless shoes out of shoes you already have. Hell, I gotta a full time job. I would not spend the time or materials it takes to make that type of shoes. $40 and out.

I call bullshit. This being for a Lupin III cosplay is too convenient.
