Is there a ok way to color this lace black? Later I'm going to cover it with better lace or ribbon but I just got this headbow today and I need it to be non-ita by tomorrow morning. I don't think I'll have time to run out look for ribbon or lace in that time.
Would acrylics coat it? Or black nail polish? I've never painted lace before because it's the stupidest thing even and shouldn't be done. I'm short on time though so I guess that's my option.

I'm trying to find a good fabric for a super suit; is heavier weight lycra a good idea if I plan on making the suit very tight/compression-type? Also, anyone know how to do good topstitched seams in lycra without it being bunched up or breaking the thread when it's stretched to put on?

Also, has anyone here worked with cordura, and does it have any special considerations to worry about?

>Reposting since old thread is in auto sage mode.

I'm trying to make a Teddie suit but I never sewn before or did a project this big. I want to give this a shot because I can't seem to find a commissioner to do this for me that isn't expensive as hell.

One of the biggest issues I'm having is making it size to scale because I'm 178 cm and most Teddie cosplayers I've seen run on the small size since Teddie himself is small.

Going to use these two tutorials and get some help from relatives:

https://atashi.wordpress.com/2012/08/04/persona-4-teddie-kuma-cosplay-progress/

http://cassari.deviantart.com/art/Making-Teddie-Part-1-313629951

-What do I need to make the suit breathable? I'm going to be wearing a Junes version Teddie cosplay under the Teddie suit. I don't want to be a sweaty mess with my makeup on.

-What do I use instead of dog toys to make the squeaky noises in his shoes?

-How would I be able to use the washroom in something like this?!

Image related. Going to have a cosplay in a cosplay.

For the zipper; OrgXIII sells large, chunky plastic zippers.

Top dome, papier mache or fiberglass. Use spray glue to stick felt to the dome. Make sure it has padding that rests on your SHOULDER not your head.

Eyes are thin white fabric. Thin lycra works well for this.

Rest of it can be made of anything; I'd go for a bottom-weight or a jersey knit so it lays nicely. I fyou need it to have some body, add spongey foam or batting in layers, but make sure there is a significant ari gap, so you don't die of heat.

It WILL be warm. Make sure the head is well ventilated (cutting holes for the eyes will help this).

So I've decided to cut out the middleman and make a GL costume myself.
Alan Scott seems like the best choice just because it's more of finding things that would make good pieces, rather than making it all from scratch.

I need:
>A long red shirt or sweater with slightly baggy sleeves, a flat collar, and no buttons
>A fucking gigantic belt with a belt buckle that's a to-scale model of Wyoming
>Tight green pants
>Black or light purple material for the cape with a green (or shiny green if it's purple) for the inside
>A small chain and something resembling whatever you call those gold things that hold the chain together
>A large dog cone to make the collar
>Long red rainboots and something like a gold chain to wrap around each one
Any suggestions for these?

I'm trying to make this cosplay. I'm buying a black zentai suit and making the "metal" parts out of craft foam. How can I have the foam sticking on the zentai suit while at the same time be able to wear it?

Like if I were to get the foam bands all around my waist and stomach so they look tight, how am I supposed to make it so I can remove it and put it on? I don't know if I'm making any sense here?

Also, what other material could I use to make the metal? Is craft foam the easiest to use? In this case that the armor is mostly just belt like and goes around the body.

Thank you, Anon. TBH I was kind of nervous about posting the pic.

That said, I'll share a few other nuggets of information if you are new to working with furs: keep a vacuum with hand tools handy because it gets everywhere. In fact, I frequently ran the hand tool over each piece of fur to pick up any strays.

Mark your lines on the back of the fur and cut it with a razor blade from the back, then pull apart at the cuts. Scissor cutting can leave you with some fur getting trimmed at stupid angles ruining the consistent length.

To hide your seams, trim some fur away at the allowance just inside where you want to stitch, stitch, then use a tiny comb such as an eyelash comb to rearrange the fiber and cover your tracks.

Good luck!

I am a bit of a peacock at work, and aim to be as 18thC fashionable as possible, but my knowledge of hair curling is almost in the negatives. Right now, I am manually curling it with my fingers fresh out of the shower, and pinning it in place until it dries. Would a hair curler or two stacked be possible? Whats a good way to fast set it? It really depends on what the cat ears are made of at this point. If they are not solid plastic or something (they sound like they are made of fabric) try putting a headband under the wig with prongs (I just used a lightweight but thick wire) sticking off of the top of the headband (like weird antennas). The prongs will then go through the wig (if it is mesh) and poke out the top. Then just poke a hole for each prong in the sewn ears and stick the prongs through. This should keep them fine all day. I would recommend if they are sewn with stuffing in them use two prongs on each ear so they don't twist and turn during the day.

I used this for Homestuck horns and they stayed great for the whole con and didn't damage the wig so I was able to wear it for other cosplays after. I don't know exactly how it would work for something not as solid as horns but it is worth a try I think.

My question was then if i had to cut the wig so the cat ears could poke through. But this made me realize that most wigs are mesh and cutting would be unnecessary. WOW I'M STUPID

Yep, do your neck a favour and make them as lightweight as possible...learned this the hard way. Depending on what the design is, I'd say to make them sturdy but easily removable. Look at this: http://cosplaytutorial.com/list.php#BasicMakeupContouring

and ctrl f up makeup tips as well as how to make a ten o' clock shadow.

You can get everything at a thrift store or something similar. For the hat I would suggest to go to a specialty store that sells those types.

If you're a beginner, I'd say it's worth the price trying with worbla first.
Although craft foam armour has great potential if you have the skill/practice, every little mistake you make with that method will show, whereas if you mis-shape worbla you can just heat it back up and try again until it's exactly how you want it.

If you're concerned about money-saving, just don't go all kamui and use the sandwich method for every single piece. It can be great for some details, but you can easily get away with just folding the edges of your main pieces over like so: http://tiff.cc/osplay/the-perks-of-folding-worbla-instead-of-sandwiching-it/

Not exactly cosplay help, but I'm in sort of a dilemma where I'm not certain of the legalities revolving around it.
I recently did a photoshoot for one of my cosplays, and I got back about 3 photos that were posted, all of which were not very flattering. I asked the photog if I could see some of the raw images because I knew there had to be some decent pics from the shoot. He gave them to me, but only on the agreement that I couldn't share them or send them to anyone else. The problem is that there's at least 12 more pics in the folder, some of which are very nice! I'd really like to use them in my own costuming portfolio, but I'm afraid that I'm not allowed to do that.

Don't rely on this as legal advice, but a few minutes on Google tells me that, as a general matter, you don't own the photographs you commissioned, unless you had an agreement to the contrary. (You may also remember this hullabaloo from when Heroes of Cosplay stole people's pictures of Yaya.)

http://www.dacs.org.uk/knowledge-base/factsheets/commissioned-works
http://copyright.uslegal.com/copyright-ownership/commissioned-works/

My suggestion is to -- in a very friendly and non-adversarial way, and one which gives him an out for not recognizing why your favorite pictures are better than others -- just ask if you can use the photos! "Wow, Photographer, these are great! I especially like B, F, and G. I know you asked me not to share, but can I use them in my costuming portfolio? They really show off the [ technical aspect of costume that a photographer might not think is important to highlight in a composition ]."

I'm planning to cosplay as Haneru, the kid on the left, for a con in a few months. I'm looking at the stylized eyelines and the J on his left cheek.

I'm thinking I could draw them in with eyeliner but I'm not familiar with how to use makeup. I assume I should lightly pencil in the outline of the shapes then fill it in. You could raise the bottom and enlarge the cutouts for the arms and neck area to give yourself a little more freedom of movement.

I can't tell how it's being worn but if it were a little bigger like a shell with straps rather than being form fitting to your skin it could slide with your body instead of restricting it. The torso armor (bogu) for kendo is like that, allowing alot of freedom of movement.

I kept reading the website and I think I was wrong.

It says the model doesn't acquire the rights to the photos but it does to get it in written form. But this again assumes the model is being paid for the work. Law stuff is confusing sometimes.

In my opinion if he didn't pay you for the photos and you use them for your portfolio only (ie you dont profit from them directly as in sell the photos) you should be fine but I'd do a bit more research and if I were you in the future whenever you get a photoshoot ask for the rights to use all photos if you credit the photographer but you'll prob have to specify if you use for profit or not and most likely you might have to pay her/him.

First, you're looking at Australian websites. While US/UK/Aus have a lot of the same court-made law, it looks like they all had statutes that went different ways in the 80s/90s.

What is pictured here is a very short version of a hoop skirt, which is the type of skirt you would see in historical costuming, especially for clothing in the 1800's. They've been used in modern fashion in shorter versions like this, and without fabric over them such as in the cage skirts.

If you are making a hoop skirt for a cosplay, keep a few things in mind. First, you're going to want to have a petticoat that is at least a couple layers thick to keep the hoops from showing through. Also, these things do not wield much, you'll have to be careful not to bump into things, and you'll also have to be careful sitting.

If it's an option, I would look up petticoat tutorials for Madoka cosplays. A madoka petticoat may be a bit more work, but will give you the same amount of poof as a short hoop, but will be comfier and easier to move in.

I need some serious wig advice.

I bought this GLW secondhand and I can tell it came to me in bad shape. This is only my second wig but my first one looks nothing like this. It seems as if the seller wore the wig several times and never cleaned it/left it alone. It's matted around the scalp and is shedding like crazy. I just cleaned and soaked it in fabric softener and I'm slowly brushing it out. Is there any way to salvage this or am I shit out of luck? I was thinking about doing the hot water method but I have no idea if it's even worth it

It depends on the con, but many have a similar set up.

You may have a preset judging time, or you may be called to the judges after you arrive in the green room before the masq starts. Generally, you'll be in the green room for a couple of hours at least while they make sure that all contestants are there and they get everything ready.
During your judging, you will spend a bit talking about your costume, materials you used, choices you made etc, and the judges may ask you some questions as well. It helps to bring reference images with you, as the judges can't possibly know every detail of every character, and they will want to compare it for accuracy.
You won't get any feedback at this time. You're time in the green room will likely be spent talking to the MC and/or stage ninjas if they have any, about what you plan to do on stage and if you need any assistance getting on or off the stage (mostly this is a problem for big and bulky costumes). They will also take a photo of you, possibly for the website, but mostly so the judges have something to look back on and remind them who was who during their deliberation.

After all awards have been handed out, you may or may not be able to ask the judges for feedback. it depends on if they are available for that, and if they are even willing to. Most smaller con judges will, but larger cons just don't have the time.

Hmm... Make sure your using a comb, but honestly, if its synthetic... it may have been sold secondhand because its about at the end of its life. A good silicon (not oil) based spray can sometimes help. Honestly, you may just want to use a comb or tangle teezer to just smooth out the top only.

I'm using a wide tooth comb and brushing from the bottom to the top while carefully avoiding to tug at the wefts. On the unbrushed side you can see multiple fibers that are significantly longer than the others - I just run my whole hand through and grab about 5-7 strands without any effort. Unfortunately I cannot wear the wig because of how itchy the mats are around the scalp (and it's all around the hairline and underneath the bangs)

I will try the silicone spray though! Thank you for the suggestion. If that doesn't work I guess I'll just toss it out

Having a tough time with this jacket.

I'm looking into coated fabric, like this: https://www.fabric.com/buy/0324867/malore-faux-leather-red?cm_vc=756b1813-cbc1-43b3-84bd-29889bf8fb7b
I bought a sample of it, but the color was not nearly so dark. Is there a better word to search other than 'coated fabric'? I'm looking for super-thin fabric with a dark red leather finish on it (i'm going to applique it to the black). I know it must be out there, but I don't know what to search. "Vinyl" and "leather" just get me thick fabrics.

Help...?

Second, I think of those four colors Ginger Blonde would do best for your cosplay. The two bottom ones are waaaaaay too orange for just your cosplay but also your skintone I feel, and the warm light brown wouldn't look bad on you but I do not feel like it'd be the right color for the wig you're making. If you can sculpt or build around them, they sit high up enough on the side of your head that you should be able to balance yourself and them out easier than a headband. For extra support, the base of your horns, make a hole and sew around the comb.

Does anyone know how to make Yuya's jacket stand up like this? I was thinking of wires but I wasn't sure.

I want to cosplay as Taokaka eventually, just wondering what the best method of doing her face would be. I'd like it to be a rounded mask (not going to use a zentai suit head thing ew) but i'm trying to also factor in my vision and hearing. Thanks!

Bonus points if anyone can work out retractable claws.

Is there a term for this kind of decoration with braid and buttons? It's common in Napoleonic uniform-styled jackets and other fashion but I can't find an actual word for it. I'm looking for tutorials and more detailed pictures.

So I have stumbled upon a load of fake leather fabric in my room and I was wondering what cosplays I could use it for as I can't really think of any. Preferably female characters and not too skimpy, suggestions welcome!

I particularly meant the braid/trim and button stuff, not so much the seam in the middle. Sorry it's so hard to see in that picture.
Here's a kind of crappy looking example from Bodyline where you can clearly see the trim. I'd like mine to look less... cheap.

You don't need a lace front at all....it's just a short style with bangs. Google "Cosplay 90s bang tutorial" for how to do the volume.
Also if you could get a natural black wig, not true black that would look nice.

I did kind of the same thing to an OP recently- I bought some of the braids/cords they use in marching band hats; they have little hoops at each end to be attached to buttons.

I just sewed a couple of military looking buttons on the bodice then buttoned the braids/cords on. I guess you can always get a gold trim and sew it on instead if that's what you prefer?

Is it okay to be critical of a person's natural attributes when cosplaying a character of any sort?
I know there could be a pretty good cosplay with a mediocre looking person, but what's the use in cosplaying a character who has a certain body type, and not even remotely working into the spectrum of which that character's body looks like? I want to look at consistency, not just someone playing an obvious dress up.
I had a bit of a fit with my girlfriend last night over this because she cosplays and I want to encourage her to get proper gains for her character at anime north. I think of cosplay like trying to represent a character, not oneself. Is thinking people should cosplay fit for body type really that wrong?
Am I wrong for wanting her body to look arguably better?

This has probably been asked tons of times before but I'm still a bit new to cosplay...
If you have the same color eyes as the character you're cosplaying, is it okay to go without color contacts? Or are the contacts absolutely necessary?

>> No.7964933

>>7964925
It's ok. It's generally accepted that contacts are a step further, because some people can't use them. Most people accept that you can not use contacts. If it's for the same colour as your eyes, it's really just a make-up thing to enlarge them.

Ah, okay, thank you! I just have overly sensitive eyes so it's hard for me to wear contacts.
If it isn't considered too necessary, I'll go ahead and leave out the contacts...at least for this particular cosplay.

So I'm not quite as well endowed in the breast region as others, but I'm not really looking to ever get something as permanent as a boob job to get bigger breasts because I just want massive tits for cosplay.
I looked into breast plates for drag, hoping to get my hands on something but the prices are just a liiiittle too much than I'm willing to pay for something I'll wear twice a year or so. Because of that, I would like to make my own. That way I can decide on the exact shape, have it made to fit me exactly, and possibly save myself some money.
The only problem is that I'm not entirely sure of the best way to do this, since I've never made anything like this, ever. I'd sincerely appreciate any ideas, product names, tutorials, etc
Pic related, censored out nips since we're blue

Who's got that gif of some small anime girl ripping off a fake set of tits and throwing them onto some girl in a bath house. She's got a flat chest underneath too.

>> No.7965470

>>7965454
Honestly? These things are going to hurt your neck. You're best just to use well-constructed padding and contouring around your boobies.

Start with two bras, foam pads (or double bagged water baloons filled only a small way). One bra should be uncomfortably small, this goes on first, the next holds everything together. Drag Queens who want 'cleavage' without having to have one of these things actually just gather the small amount of excess flesh on their chests together and pad the rest as well as highlighting and shading the parts that need to pop and crease.

Best to look up drag queen breast tutorial for that.

If you really wanted to make your own and have them look realistic, you're looking at making silicone moulds, which is far too much work for casual wear and probably would cost more than these fake ones.

TL;DR
Use what you have/wait till you can get your boob job/pay up.

The double bra + contour method works decently for a front view, but not so much in the side, which tends to lack in volume. It's also hella uncomfortable and hurts my back for some reason.
I wouldn't have all the weight around my neck; a clear back strap similar to that of a bra would be present to help disperse the weight.

Neither of those posts said anything about fake tits. One mentioned gathering excess flesh in the same fashion as drag queens, the other mentioned double bra-ing.
Unless your comment on the fake tits was referring to the water balloons, which seem like they're taking the place of chicken cutlets in >>7965470

I actually find water balloons work better for me than silicone inserts. They're a bit more conforming and comfortable, you just have to make sure that they're the right size. And you can powder them to keep everything dry (you'll get hot under two bras and a layer of filler)

with velcro you'll run the risk off it pulling the fabric of your shirt or suit. I'd use velcro on the part thats go fully around the body and then use elastic to keep the shoulder armor on (although it looks like and bottom of the shoulder armor goes around the arm)
use a combination of acrylic and fabric paint on the belt parts so they'll bend without the paint cracking

Anybody got any experience with using smoke for props? I've toyed with the idea of fitting a small spray canister inside Hiccup's flame sword so I can have green gas shoot out the bottom like in the second HTTYD movie, but I'm not having any luck finding any smoke emitters small enough to fit inside the hollow.
