I think that I'll be ditching my Skin Food peach powder. I have an unopened one, but I'm just going to donate it to the women's shelter with other unused beauty items I have. It was raved upon to be so good, but it doesn't really have any coverage, it made my face really greasy looking, and as if this morning I now have a minor breakout to deal with and I feel like it was the powder's doing. I'm so glad that I still have all of my other brands..

>> No.7896362

>>7896349
That's really thoughtful of you to donate it to the women's shelter, anon. I feel like items like that aren't donated very often but I'm sure the women there will really appreciate it.

>> No.7896370

>>7896362
Duuuude, donating skin care, cosmetics, and feminine care products to that shelter is fun. And, you're right, they don't really get a lot of that stuff. However, The Body Shop which I used to work at does a massive donation of products to them every Christmas where all of the staff makes a basket using items from the store and we can have customers come in and do the same. I saw the bin for it by the register last week, so I suppose they're starting early this year. A part of me wishes that Lush would also consider doing it, but then I get all paranoid about suggesting it to the staff because of the stories of so many people suffering from the fragrances in products of theirs.

>> No.7896378

>>7896370
This is going to sound so weird, but you're making me smile so big right now because you just seem so great and now I'm inspired to gather/buy a ton of stuff to donate to my local women's shelter, too. I've only ever donated clothes.

>> No.7896388

>>7896378
Don't feel weird. When I went out on Christmas Eve last year, I hit Lush, Clinique, The Body Shop, and Target (tinted lip balms and hand sanitizers and Vaseline products and Summer's Eve) and then dumped the two bags off at the shelter and spent the entire car ride back to my place giggling like a moron with my friend on Skype about how we should organize things like this often for women who don't have the money for beauty products/feminine care items while dressed as masked senshi. Be like friggin' 90s magical girls, but with powers involving cleansing and making a gust of wind scented like roses.

Clothes are a HUGE need, don't ever doubt yourself when donating those. All donations matter and there is no "this is better than y or x"; All help is good help.

CVS carries NYX now, I haven't bought from them since they phased out their eyeshadow singles but I can recommend their powder blushes, and their HD setting powder. They are supposed to have a lot of good lip products too, tbh I'd just search for their 'best hits'. Avoid the palettes they are shit.

Burts Bees lip balms and lip shimmers, I like a lot of their skincare and bodycare too. Smells good without being overpowering like Lush.

Wet and Wild Comfort Zone, their liquid eyeliner (NOT H20!) and cream eyeliner is good for newbies.

Sally Hansen, Essie, Revlon and OPI nailpolish

Really I think you are best off looking for "best drugstore ___", "Drugstore hits 2014" etc. It seems like you are new to makeup so this is a good chance to get yourself acquainted with various product types and formulations. I wouldn't recommend foundation, concealer, or eyeshadow (Comfort Zone aside) from the drugstore but you can get decent versions of everything else. So get:

pencil eyeliner
liquid eyeliner
cream/gel eyeliner
mascara
brow powder/gel
eyeshadow primer
powder blush
cream blush
setting powder

>>7897113
Yeah that's true, it's not as if there is one brand where everything they make is amazing. I'll probably still end up having quite a few things that are considered medium brand for a while (I had a bad habit of stocking up on blush so now I'll be good for a long time.)

On another note, is anyone else doing something like Birchbox/Ipsy/Beautybag or any of those other monthly makeup/beauty sample subscriptions? What are your opinions on those kinds of sites? I'm currently subscribed to Birchbox along with my sister which has been pretty fun so far. We live across the country from one another now so it's fun comparing the samples we get.

I did ipsy for about a year until the card I had it on expired and I felt like I got enough make up to last me a while. They sent some pretty good full size samples like blushes, bronzers, nail polish, and I even got some falsies a couple of times. Decent subscription box for only like 10 bucks a month. I never really got a bag where I hated everything, I'd suggest it.

Yeah I do wish that the stuff was a bit nicer quality. I did get a benefit primer but a lot of the stuff is brands that I haven't heard of so I don't know if they are actually good quality or not. I've been thinking of looking at other sites to see if the quality is better and if I'll want to switch over.
>>7897163
Ah really? I didn't see ipsy until after I had subscribed to birchbox but if it's better then I might show my sister it and we might do that instead. Do they give you a makeup bag every month? I feel like they would just all pile up in my closet if they do or I might just give them to friends if they need one.

>> No.7897217

In my experience, Benefit is hit or miss. I know a lot of girls like them, but I've never really found their products to be too spectacular. I had their mascara and after like a month it had expired and was completely unusable. I was pretty surprised, because I've owned medium, high, and drugstore-tier mascaras and none of them ever expired like that. It wasn't even stored any differently than my other makeup, either. I do recall an anon several makeup threads ago saying that she used a Benefit pore product on her face and it caused burning and peeling.

As I've said, it's a hit or miss brand from what I've experienced and read. If I did these makeup box subscriptions, I'd likely wind up just donating a lot of the things without opening their seals.

>> No.7897250

>>7896307
I'd like to add that if you use Sasa to order things, they sell department store brands such as Shiseido for less than Macy's does and they do free shipping events a few times a month. However, Shiseido is much better for skin care than it is for makeup. Shiseido owns NARS, so I suppose they don't stress their own cosmetics line too much since they already make money from NARS' products.

>> No.7897271

>>7897217
Ah yeah, that was just an example of one of the things that I've gotten from birchbox. I haven't gotten anything from benefit other than some samples like their mascara and lip tint. That's scary to hear about the pore product though.

So I'm trying to find a foundation that is super pale and pink-toned rather than beige/yellow, and I'm not having much luck even at Sephora. Everything is either too dark or too yellow. I'm super duper Irish pale. Oddly enough, the closest match I have at the moment is a Mary Kay foundation, but I'm not in love with it, and wouldn't mind shelling out for something nicer that I can get from a regular store/online.

Benefit... I walked into this make up and perfume shop and was looking for the hg eyeliner. This woman came up to me and dragged me to the Benefit stand right after I told her what my mission was. She recommended me the Benefit they're real liner, packaging said 94% was happy with their product so I was like ok. Then she recommended me the they're real mascara, so altogether it was 30 euros. Got excited and tried them right away when I got home. The quality of the eyeliner was actually pretty nice and after 6 hours of wearing it, the colour was a bit faded but it did not smudge at all. The rubber tip felt annoying on my lid and you had to twist somewhere to get some of the product on it. It took me like 8 to 10 twists to see it actually got out, and if it did, you would see blobs come out. The mascara was shitty and crumbled right after I applied it on my lashes.

First you need to prep your face before applying any makeup, anon.

It is as follows
>After you have applied your skincare products, you need to prep your face
>Apply primer on your lids and face. This is to prevent smudging, shine, and to keep your makeup in place for long periods of time. Some people may not need it, but it is recommended.
>Then you put on your foundation.
>Then you put on your concealer. Never put the concealer before the foundation as you'd be "erasing" your concealer.
>Powder to seal the foundation and concealer.
>Eyeshadow
>Eyeliner
>Curling lashes if you prefer it.
>Mascara

Some people prefer to do their eyeshadow first and then their foundation. I personally prefer to put on my foundation first in order to avoid smudging my shadow in places I don't want it to be.

Thank you guys so much! I'm giving Two Faced and The Body Shop a try instead of the MAC (I also had no luck with smashbox, boo.) I keep seeing in these threads that MAC can be pretty hit or miss so I wanted to get a second opinion since bad primer can really mess with your skin. I've had good luck with MACs powder products and their toner (lightful softening, I think?) but I never tried any of their foundations or real skin based products so the input really helped. The best pressed powders to which I can speak to having used are Chanel, Lancome, Too Faced, NARS, and Hourglass. For Too Faced, it is specifically this one:

Chanel is 20 Clair, Hourglass is Ethereal Light, NARS is Flesh, and Lancome is Porcelaine Delicate I 100. Be careful, because for Lancome 100 and 90 look VERY similar, but 90 has more of a subtle tint of color to it whereas 100 doesn't.

I'd also like to add that if you're a fair skinned babe who hasn't found her perfect fit yet in terms of powders, a simple dusting with translucent powder will still help your pores, keeping shine away, and make your face look nice without the risk of tinting you pink, yellow, or orange as many "lightest shade" powders will do.

How MUFEHD developed over the day: it looks a lot better once you've started to sweat and once your natural oils have worked on it. It does make me question whether it will be a good foundation for the winter when my skin is drier but until I try the setting spray and bb/dupe I can't confidently say. I also just realized I could try cutting the foundation with Mizon Snail Gel, I love using it for foundations that dried too quickly. If by the end of my experiments I'm still unhappy with the finish then I will accept I am one of those seemingly few people that MUFE HD just doesn't work for. I love the Burts Bees Tinted Lip Balm in Rose and the Tinted Lip Shimmers in Raisin and Fig. The first is the sheerest but its perfect for casual 'no-makeup' looks. I remember when I first bought a balm from Burts Bees I thought I was being kind of stupid to spend $5 on a lip balm (and the lip shimmers are much skinnier than normal chapsticks) but it seriously lasted me 2 years with near daily use. I just finished up my second BB lip balm and that took about a year and a half. Money well spent.

I've had bad luck with drugstore products lately but would like to give a shout out to d/s products I truly like:

>Wet and Wild Fergie Eyeshadow Primer
Hot damn this stuff is bomb. And Ive used both UDPP and TFSI for comparison. Its nude, in convenient packaging , and about $4. My eyeshadow is holding on real strong and the primer+shadow swatches I put on my arm have lasted 2 days and I've been wearing long sleeve sweaters against them. I'm not sure if it intensifies shadows as well as the aforementioned primers but the difference is noticeable and you could top it with something like NYX milk if you wanted more oomph for less money. I'm a fan.

>Wet and Wild Comfort Zone
best drugstore e/s palette and its like 5-6 bucks for 8 well pigmented and well coordinated shades

>Elf Lip Exfoliater
I used to use Vaseline and toothbrush but thats kind of harsh and most chemical exfoliants are likewise too harsh but I hate the lip scrubs in the little pots bc I have long nails. Elf's lip exfoliater is a scrub in a stick form, imagine a chapstick with little microbeads. So much gentler and very effective. Smells and tastes good too.

>Elf blotting sheets
they're blotting sheets but cheap

>Elf HD powder
pure silica powder, same as MUFE and various others but only $6

>Nyx Powder blushes
I have Mocha and Silky Rose. They're awesome and last forever without fading.

If I can think of any others I will update, not at home atm. Hope it helps someone on a budget

From what I hear the Naked palettes are good but the biggest complaints are that they are too shimmery with not enough matte or satin-finish shadows. If you are in a professional environment they may not be versatile enough. Fall out can be mitigated by applying them wet though, if thats your thing.

I have a self made palette with a bunch of old NYX shadows but tbh I'm starting to get bored of them and I've come to realize how important aesthetically pleasing and functional packaging is to me. My makeshift palette doesn't inspire me to use it much. I am lemming after SO MANY different palettes atm. I'll probably start with Lorac.

Sorry this is going to be a huge side-rant.

I was a huge fan of Naked 1, and pretty keen on Naked 2. Naked 3 is really not worth the price.

I'm fairly certain that both Naked 1 and 2 were released when Urban Decay was a stand-alone company. They were bought out in 2012 by L'Oreal and the quality of their shadows especially, but all of their products, really, really feel drugstore level. Previous criticism of everything being too shimmery were dead on (back around 2004 up to Naked 1). The shadows, however, had staying power, and the consistency was pretty silky, and nice to blend. Their other products were OK, great liner. Ever since L'Oreal bought them out, the shadows feel like chalk and need a heavy hand to even show up. Naked 3's colors are pretty washed on the skin, unless you have a dark complexion. The darker tones aren't rich either; they're rather ashy. I've pretty much abandoned the brand. I'm certain they manufacture everything in the same factory they produce their drugstore line, and this would also explain why their new skin/foundation products give me the same skin problems as cheaper cosmetics.

>Suspicious the same year the decide to sell to China and go against their Animal Cruelty crusade is the same year L'Oreal absorbs them

They price gauge, they abuse their name recognition (like, how many naked palettes do we need a a year?). The Naked "vault" collection is NOT a value at $230. You save a whopping $80.00. The stupid glosses alone add up to $60.00, and that's what you're getting for a bargain, the stupid shit that gets bad reviews that they can't sell. So why not package it all and you're saving! Right?!

I really hate them now. Make Up Forever just released their artist shadows and they are fantastic. You'd be better spending your dollar on any other Brand.

Good thing I really didn't care about getting that palette. I honestly can't remember the last time I purchased anything from Urban Decay. I'm also curious as to why people automatically think that because L'Oreal owns a company, it means they all need to heed. The Body Shop is owned by them in an umbrella sort of deal, but part of that contract was they would be allowed to own only if TBS could stand by their anti-animal testing practice they had followed since the 1970s.

Hello! One of the OP's here.
Yesterday we compiled a list of brands we've personally tried [just the names, though], but we are planning to expand it more by listing what we feel are their strengths and weaknesses.
This list will go from drugstore to high end and will be added in next threads.

For the time being, the list with only the names will do.
We also have more useful links as well as videos, especially focused on cosplayers who may have trouble with their makeup [which will be compiled in a document as the OP can only have so much information].

Oh, and also guides like pic attached in the OP. We tried to focus on newbies when making those guides, so I hope all of our information is useful for all of you.

I have a question about eyeshadow primers. A while ago I bought Etude House's Proof 10 Eye Primer which is apparently supposed to be as good as or better than the Urban Decay one. It does what it's supposed to do; makes eyeshadow more vibrant and increases its longevity. Unfortunately it does something weird to my eyelids.
Pic related is my eyelid with no product on it. The skin there is very thin and tends to form multiple tiny folds in addition to the main crease. When I wear the primer it makes the skin stick together and I end up with like five equally sized folds as opposed to a single crease which doesn't make eyeshadow application any easier. It also feels weird when I blink. This happens even when I only apply a teeny tiny bit of it.

Is this stickiness a universal property of eyeshadow primers? I'd guess so, since they're supposed to make eyeshadow stick to your skin. Does anyone here have the same problem and if so, what do you do?
I'm already using a firming eye cream but I don't think it's doing anything to make the skin less thin and delicate. That's something that runs in the family.

Urban Decay makes an anti-aging one and a normal one and to be honest with all of the prepping people do nowadays to not age, I feel as if the former is the better option. I know that a lot of anons are enchanted by Asian cosmetics, but aside from BB creams I really don't see the hype. Asia is better in terms of skin care products, but Western cosmetics are even in demand over in Asia.

I bought this one not because I'm enchanted by Korean products but because according to MakeupAlley and various other reviews, this product is as good as Western eyeshadow primers for a fraction of the price. If the UD anti-aging primer is also sticky then it's not going to work for me, so I was wondering if stickiness is de rigueur for eyeshadow primers regardless of country of origin.

I managed to wrangle up my husband's camera for the swatches! Also, bonus: I'm going to give a mini-review for each one. The palette's already paid off its price tag for me, since I use it every day for work. My skin has beige-tan undertones, btw.

Here they are, from left to right:

1. Strange: It's a good highlighter and is pretty opaque. I use it for my brow bone, usually.

2. Dust: One of the prettiest colors, but my least favorite of the bunch. It's flaky, chalky and doesn't really hold together on its own, even with primer. I guess you could layer it to get some more sparkle out of the other shades.

3. Burnout: This color is very, very pretty on me. I like it as an overall lid color.

4. Limit: This hardly shows up on my skin. :( I have no real use for it.

5. Buzz: Also really pretty, but very similar to Burnout. It's a darker version of it.

6. Trick: My favorite of the bunch. Also, the sparkliest. It's probably my most-used shadow in the palette, since it stands out on its own as an eye-catching, every day shadow without much help from the other ones. I really hope UD has this shade as a single.

7. Nooner: Terrible name. Also, I don't use it much because it also hardly shows up on my eyes. Strangely enough, it's pretty dark on my arm. Maybe I'm not using it right?

8. Liar: This also looks super great. I love it as a lid color as well. I've been using it more lately.

9. Factory: LOVE this one as a crease color. It goes really well with Liar and Trick.

10. Mugshot: Also a good crease color.

11. Darkside: I don't use it much, since I don't care for the gray-ish undertones it has, but I can see wanting to experiment with it.

12. Blackheart: I fell in love with this one when I first got the palette. You can't see it in the picture, but it's black with purple-red sparkles (!!!) in it, which is super pretty. I haven't used it much for every day makeup.

I hope that helps!

Hello! One of OP's here.
Yes! Like the other OP said, we do have more beauty guides, especially focused on beginners. You will highly benefit from the next one if your concern is about the use of all the different products out there.

>>7900160
In reality all NAKED palettes work on dark skin. However you may benefit more from NAKED 1 or 2.

>>7900103
Do you let the primer dry? If so, it's probably best to switch to a different primer. Some primers, as mentioned, do have a sticky feeling to them. You may benefit from Urban Decay much better than Etude House, anon.

>>7900153
Oh this is gorgeous! Definitely buying this palette.

>>7900266
The easiest way to determine your skin undertone is by placing your arm under the sunlight and looking at your veins.
If your veins look green, your skin's undertone is warm.
If they look blue, your skin's undertone is blue.
If you can't really tell, your skin's undertone is neutral.

The only negative reviews I can find are on Sephora or Ulta under "lowest ratings", and there's a ton of complaints besides my own about Naked 3. A lot of them echo my sentiment which is, "Why is everyone drinking the UD punch?". I don't really pay attention to the hoards of self-proclaimed MAU on youtube, because they tend to like everything $$ that they had to spend their money on. Urban Decay also has a habit of flying out the most popular "non-partial" reviewers out to demo new sets ahead of time.

Beyond my criticism of the shadow itself, For practical purposes, I found maybe 2 shades in the whole palette that I could use, and it wasn't worth keeping the $53 (now $54) set.

I encourage people to check it out in person themselves. Read positive and negative reviews for ANY cosmetic item. If you check it out, and love it, great! But it wasn't up to a $50 brand standard, and I think the industry needs more critical eyes, outside of people complaining about prices.

>>7899971
You can check above where I mentioned the negative Sephora reviews. You have to hunt for them because every girl that learned about makeup yesterday buys Naked because it's the "OH MY GLOB" set girls share on Facebook, and then they immediately leave a positive review with no basis for comparison.

I did own all 3. I returned 3 within 30 days, but I will be taking Naked 1 into Sephora soon to swatch against a newer Naked 1 set.

>>7899926
Thanks for all of these anon, it's really kind of you to do, as it's nice being able to tab comparison photos in this thread vs pulling them all up on another site. Still +1 Lorac.

This is the first Brand I notice take a big hit when it changed hands. Estee Lauder owns a ton of subsidiaries (MAC, Bobbi Brown), but they all fall in the same playing field, and outside of slightly different focuses, I would say that all of their products reach and achieve a certain standard and audience.

L'Oreal is all over the map, with everything (including brands I like) such as YSL, Shu Uemura to Michelle Phan to L'Oreal Paris and Maybelline. I don't think everything they touch turns to shit, but I think they really saw an opportunity to take a growing market, , and saw a way to make a lot of money by manufacturing cheaply, and thinking no one would tell the difference. Most of UD's hype was created by fan-love solely, and it continues to today. Any girl on your facebook new to make-up? Que "get Naked!" comment train.

The changes packaging for a lot of their UD products I dislike (the primer tubes, the liquid eyeliner with cracking caps). UD really never cared to get into skincare, and all of the sudden they have Naked Skin. The colors in Naked Skin are pretty great, and initially I liked it, but it does the same cake-y, flake-y nonsense as a drugstore foundation, and also made my skin break out (which who knows, everyone skin reacts differently). I did like the brush they recommended with it. That's something.

Throwback to an Old Favorite.

In Asian cosmetics, its normal for the face to be darker than neck. Over here, we expect it to match your neck. False nails are such a pain in the ass.
I remember when I used them back in high school because I wanted to have long nails, and my problem was that the glue wasn't strong enough.

Yea, don't trust them solely, do some testing for yourself.

I am wary of makeup counters because I am Asian and usually the ones near me are staffed with the Whitest people possible who don't really know what colors work for anyone of a different ethnicity [I live in a predominantly White region of my state. Back when Bare Minerals were new and all the rage, wanted to try it out and had some hope because one of the girls at the counter was Asian. I though she might have a clue about colors that worked, right?

Wrong, this girl was a medium/deep tone Asian and recommended that I get the Medium/Deep starter kit because, "It worked great for me!" Cool shit and all, but I was way lighter than her. She applied some of the tester and, dude, I was ready to wreak havoc on the Jersey Shore. Too dark, too orange on me. I ended up sampling some other colors and bought what blended best with my wrist and face against her recommendations. At checkout she was like "oh, that'll be too light for you honey, but don't say I didn't warn you." Fuck you bitch, I can pick colors out too.

"Crayons are typically comprised of paraffin wax, which is used in low levels to add a little bit of gloss to lipstick. Unfortunately, because the texture is stiff and brittle, and because it doesn't play nicely with other cosmetics ingredients, you'd be hard-pressed to find a lipstick that is comprised of large amounts of paraffin wax. It's unlikely, then, that crayon-based lipstick will create a lipstick with the texture and color-payoff of a commercially available lipstick."

It's the crayola tutorial, right?

>> No.7901262

>>7901248
It wouldn't be feathery, but more stiff, dry, and difficult to apply unless you've doused the mixture in jojoba oil, coconut oil, or Vitamin E. Then, you run the risk of using too much of either of those and creating something smeary and runny that won't dry. Also, since we're still talking about wax here, let's keep in mind what happens after we blow candles out; The wax dries and hardens. I can't see that being comfortable for lips, even with the hydrating contents included within the chemistry. Again, this seems like one of the cult slumber party activities of olde and cute for certain scenarios, but not necessarily too practical.

Do beauty blenders or their dupes meet up to their hype? I'm not sure if I need one if I'm looking into Asian BB creams, or if I'd even need a sponge. I find that i need to use a sponge to blend things out with the Revlon BB, but it's really thick and heavy.
