The lolita comm is really super nice. Not always best dressed but I love the girls, they're pretty great.
The cosplay comm is 90% tumbltards who aren't particularly great at it, but I think there's been improvement ("senior" cosplayers do workshops and such). They have meetings once a month and I kinda stopped going, the guy who runs it was giving me weird vibes.

In other news, I went to the Forest City Comic Con this past Sunday. It was crowded as fuck, but not bad for a first time con. There were random fuckups in nearly every panel I went to (mostly people not getting the projectors they were promised, something about locked rooms or w/e). Didn't stick around for the masquerade, but I've seen pictures, costumes weren't super duper amazing but not terrible either. And the turnout was supposedly 2300 people or so which is great. Next year should be better, so I'm excited. Feels good to have a con I don't have to commute 2+ hrs to. I'm thinking of maybe doing an AA table next year or something, would be a good place to start.

The only thing that sucked was that it was hard to see their slide show, because they were promised a projector screen, and the con did not deliver (this happened in other panels as well, btw, which is kinda par for the course when you're running a 1st year con I think). They also raffled off some prizes.

Anyway, the panel organizers were told that if they hit max attendance (20 people) they'd get a fashion show for next year, so looks like that'll be a thing.

I was kind of surprised, too! But then again, I feel like the nerd community has only been growing here over the years. A handful of comic book shops either opened up or got bigger, and social media makes it easy to connect with other people as well (like the cosplay/Japanese culture club that has meet ups every month).

There's been successful "microcons" if you will; there was a scifi/fantasy con last year at the Gibraltar market, Fanshawe college had one with emphasis on gaming, and then in July there was London Comicon (although it was so poorly advertised, and also small, that I really doubt it will be returning). I think that was kind of like the appetizer and got people excited for a bigger con, so I can only see FCCC growing from here.

Last year at HalCon they oversold the venue by a HUGE amount. They sold "any day" passes but for some reason didn't count them along with weekend passes and they also failed to account for distribution (for some reason they thought an equal amount would go Fri,Sat,Sun).

This was last year. It was such a cluster fuck, I don't plan on going this year (not that I can anyway; tickets sold out a while ago IIRC)

Some are willing to make the trip. That alone is pretty cool. The con wants to improve, like they added more programming that was requested by attendees from the year before.

So a con that does that, does have at least some promise. And there's no guarantee they're going to invite the people you hate so much again.

And I live in the area and got to talk with staff. They do it more for the local area and the cosplayers/gamers/whatever that can't make it to cons like Fan Expo, AN, etc (just as examples).

And it's not that hard to get to. If you're willing to actually leave the GTA, it's literally right off the 401. There are some cons people say are "easy to get to" and you are pretty much driving through the whole city trying to find the place.

I'm of the opinion that if no one makes effort to go to small cons, you'll never have larger cons. If no one wound up going to ConBravo!, it wouldn't have the reach it does today. The same thing would be true of Anime North, and just about every other successful show out there.

My thought is this, and understand it's coming from someone who is running FanFare (the date conflict was not intentional btw):

QMC has a fairly good itinerary for a small con. They're offering a lot of content for their second year and the location, to my understanding, is quite nice. They've got some interesting guests and the content will at least be fun.

Will it be worth it to people strapped for cash? Probably not. I couldn't justify it right now, but my situation isn't everyone's. It IS worth supporting if you're interested in helping fandom grow and there being more fun things to do around the year. It IS worth it if you're in the Quinte region or nearby. It's even worth it if you're a Toronto or Ottawa local who doesn't mind travelling.

What I think people let get the better of them is the interest in drama-peddling. They /want/ things to fail because then they have more fuel; more terrible stories to tell.

Don't let things like area turn you off, either. Youmacon is just outside of Detroit and that's done nothing to stop its growth. Otakon is in Baltimore, a city in which I was told to "keep the water in sight or you'll get mugged". Guess what? Didn't matter.

I think QMC will grow into something good. If you can't afford it, come out to FanFare. We're only one day, we don't offer the same content as QMC, and that's fine. But we do support going to the event you think fits you best, and helping fandom grow equally. Don't listen to the haters and dramamill.
