Hey /cgl/ Ponyfag looking for some advice.

I want to use some wefts to make a tail, but I have no idea how to go about doing that. I have one of those clip on tails for a different cosplay but im not exactly sure how its made. It kinda looks like wefts are made into a small wig and then stretched over the hair clip.

Anyone know how this is done? Or even a better way to do this?

Jesus calm down anon.
Ok OP. I think to make a tail you basically just described it yourself. Use the clip on one you already have and make sure it matches your wig.

OP I think you gave your own answer. Buy one of those clip on tails and mod it.

The comb is held inside the small wig by a large, hefty piece of elastic, you can see the elastic loop and knot in the left photo you posted. Undo the loop, tease the thing apart, and you should be able to take the hairclip out. You can then retie the loop (or leave it untied) and add something else so that you can wear it around your waist.

As for what to add -- that's up to you. You could sew ribbons at the top and bottom of the weft thing, then loop your belt through the ribbons. Alternatively you could sew it directly to a loop of elastic (covered in fabric) that goes around your waist. Or sew a piece of ribbon to tie around your waist. If you need something transparent to wear over a dress, you can try attaching a few braids of crystal beading elastic (braiding them together makes them stronger and less likely to sag). It won't be completely invisible, though.

I don't recommend sewing a brooch backing or a safety pin, the hair weft probably isn't light so the resulting tail is likely to damage your dress.

I feel like I didn't explain something right. I'd like to avoid modifying or destroying my other tail and just get another clip for this one.

I was going to get a bunch of wefts like this and then turn it into something like this. I guess the best way to do this would be to sew the wefts to some netting or cloth (if i could buy a patch of the netting they use to make the wigs id be set, anyone know where this is sold?) and then wrap it around the clip. Than as >>7874582 pointed out to me, I'd use some elastic to hold the clip inside what I've sewn together.

Ah.

I deconstructed one of these for my BJD so I'll tell you how; no photos though. It's slow going for a tiny BJD, and the pressing step is really iffy. You may want to rethink this.

Cut your fabric/netting into a circle. Fold and sew a channel around the circle and thread your elastic through it. Don't tighten it yet.

Pick up needle and thread and look up "back stitch". Sew the wefts, going around the circle, facing OUT. Like rays of a sun emanating from the centre out, yeah? Sew two lines of wefts all the way around. You'll need to sew this right next to the channel where you inserted the elastic earlier. Make sure you don't accidentally catch the elastic while sewing.

Now the centre. Pick a direction. Sew the wefts in lines across the centre, all the hair hanging down. I'm unsure about spacing, you can start sparse and add more if you can see the netting through the hair. Make sure your lines are parallel.

Next, pressing. The first wefts you sewed are radiating out like the sun, yeah? Grab a steam iron (not too hot, you don't want to melt your wefts). Orient your tail, it should be easy to see which side is up and which side is down since you sewed all the hair hanging down in the step above. Take the hair at the top, pull it back, and press it so that it lies back on the tail instead of outwards like the sun. The tricky part is that you'll want to press it very close to the edge of the circle/where you stitched it, so that it hangs down really naturally. Do the top, then a little bit on each side until all the hair falls down naturally.

The purpose of sewing a circle of weft is to hide all the stitches, so if you don't to it, or you don't press it, the hair will part when you move, exposing the stitches underneath.

Put the clip in and tighten the elastic.

Forgot to mention, you'll want to test the temperature of the hair before you start so you can be sure you can crease the hair properly without melting it.

The other thing is the size of the circle, obviously it needs to be big enough to enclose the hairclip you're going to put in it.

Cool, thank you for this. It was very informative
