Apparently, PinkyParadise is having a sale, 50% off if you enter a code, but only until the 6th. I think this would be a great time to get a pair or two. The only problem is, there's so many contacts and different styles and I'm not quite sure what to look for or what would work best.

Would anyone be able to give me some suggestions/recommendations for this character? I'm also looking for violet/purple contacts for another character. My eyes are dark brown, if that matters.

new to this board.

How hard it is to make a costume from a generic character distinguishable? Main characters from most SoL anime are pretty generic, so even people that watched the anime might not identify the character. I don't wanna spend time building the costume to make it look like some generic character.

I was thinking about making one of either dark flame master from chuunibyou, or ryuuji from toradora, to take photos with the female main characters at weaboo conventions. Those characters are good because they look realistic, they look like what someone would wear on their everyday use (which is what I'm aiming or).

Toradora and chuunibyou MCs costumes are just a simple school uniform, how would you recommend me to build those school uniforms?

I'm not planning doing any of *pic below* because it's too expensive, hard to build and faggotry.
http://th06.deviantart.net/fs70/PRE/i/2014/083/5/0/rikka_takanashi_and_dark_flame_master_by_bear213-d7b5l57.jpg

It would be more like a normal clothing, none of that wig bull. Even considering switching characters to match the hair color (white dude, blonde hair, blue eyes).

You are pretty new. But, to answer your question I guess, when it comes to characters who may have generic outfits or wear clothes that look suited for every day use, you'll need to pay attention to detail and accessorize. Does this character have any necklaces, bracelets, gloves, etc? What kind of poses does the character do, how does the character act? That sort of stuff helps if people take your picture. And to really stand out, you WILL need a wig, and possibly contacts, all the more detail you follow, the better.

Wigs look bad, I was aiming at something realistic. If I were fat I wouldn't choose the characters I did. Could say I'm trying to be the character, not cosplay like it.

Plastic-ish materials make clothing shiny, I also wanna take this to gaming conventions, so it's even less acceptable to look like a goofy anime character with a wig.

Ryuuji might be even more doable because: Priest-like clothing + red scarf = really distinguishable.

Get some red fabric - you'll want something with a bit of weight, like cotton duck (also called canvas). Cut a strip of it an inch wider and longer than you need it. Fold a 1/2 inch edge around the whole thing and use fabric glue to tack it down. Get a buckle from an old belt at Goodwill and attach to your new belt. With a little effort, you should be able to work the belt prong though the fabric to fasten it.

You need to be pretty damn good at embroidery to pull that off. Case in point: all the Anna and Elsa gowns people try to embroider.

Fabric paint can look really great - the trick is to get sharp lines. Use freezer paper stencils for the designs, masking tape for the long straight lines. Thin the paint a bit so it's not too gloppy.

If you don't mind the costs associated with messing up and have enough free time, it's usually more rewarding to learn to make your own stuff. If you don't want to spend the time, have to buy new materials because you fucked up, etc, buy your stuff but know there's a certain community stigma about doing that.

Vintage shops usually have a box of handmade ones for ~5 bucks a pair. They have a lot of white ones and various sizes. the lady at the last shop I bought gloves from was thrilled to see someone young buying them because it reminded her of when she was young and they literally wore gloves all the time unless they were eating.

They're really beautiful too and each pair was probably made by the original owner.

How would I go about making this costume? The top is simple enough, but I don't want to just buy a shitty grass skirt, and I can't find any green leis that look nice.

>> No.7862811

>>7862773
How nice do you want it? You can look into getting artificial palm fronds or make your own out of fabric/felt. Felt, I think, would be best as you don't have to worry about fraying and it has enough body to look nice. Only issue I can see it that long strips tend to stick to one another. Static guard should help with that though. Use a few different shades of green if you can find some, otherwise it will look very flat and blah.

Oops, I missed this thread and made my own. Ill post here so it can be deleted.

So, Ive been searching around with little success trying to find the best kind of patter for a very round, single top seam hood. (pic related)

Im only looking to do the dinosaur suit, not the creature himself. I see that the base of the hood is 4 pieces (not including the snout/eyes, etc). I just cant find a good pattern or really wrap my head around what the pieces of fabric would look like flat. Any time Ive made something spherical, its been 6 or so pieces.

Here is a close up picture of the character, if that helps
http://noobabble.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/dino-gnar-splash.jpg

and here is the actual 3d model
http://www.lolking.net/models/?champion=150&skin=1

I think its the opening in the front that is throwing me off so hard.

Does anyone have a pattern, partial pattern or suggestion on how to do this?

Thanks a bunch!

I can't help you buy anything, but I had trouble finding a pattern I liked for Sable's apron and just painted it. If you need a guide: http://allfades.deviantart.com/art/Plaid-Fabric-Tutorial-190214116 So, just in case you can't find anything, this option still exists. Good luck!

Ok, I have a 2 parter help issue for 2 different costumes. First off: Is it possible to make a shirt/top item by making the sleeves and torso one piece? As in, if I were to trace a shirt for a pattern, I'd include the sleeves instead of tracing around the armhole. And, if it's doable, when I do a pattern, what angle would I draw the sleeves in (ex: 90º angle so the sleeves are sticking straight out horizontally from the torso)?

Second: I'm doing a Jin cosplay and he has these medium sized half spheres on outfit. I've seen a few ways to make them and just want advice on which to follow. I've seen Christmas ornaments split in half and painted over, clear ornaments painted inside, clear gems painted only on the bottom so the light reflects the color, or just make them from clay. Since he has one on his waist, I don't really want anything too heavy since it'll pull my sash down.

Thanks in advance for any help on these two.

Interfacing is probably a good option, I don't think the rolled hem would do anything. You should just look up superhero cape tutorials since they also attach at the shoulder and taper out!

>>7864482
Take your favorite hoodie as a base and then trace the hood. Make a separate rectangle that is the length of the hood opening. When you let the hood drape on your head, it'll end up looking more like an oval like his.
You should probably just get some muslin/cheap fabric to test out hood shapes, horns, ear hole, snout/eye shape. Then you can alter as needed. Look at pic related for a basic starting shape.

I'm just taking a guess based off of what she says, i've never done anything like this myself so I could be completely wrong buuuut

-500 yards of 1.5 inch ribbon (or in her case, 250 yards of 3" cut in half) You'll probably end up needing more though, because jessie is TINY

-7 circle skirts, approx 1.5 yards needed per circle skirt (assuming your waist measurement) = 10.5 yards of organza for the circle skirt.

- 6 layers of tulle, using the circle skirt calculator you'd need approx 9 yards.

- Horsehair and bias tape.. this part I have no idea. you could probably get away with a yard of horse hair.

TL;DR I'd estimate if your waist was 24 inches you'd need 500 yards of ribbon, 11 yards of organza, 9 yards of tulle, and 1 yard of horsehair braid.

if you need help estimating fabric amounts for the circle skirts, this is super helpful:

These may help. You'll want to modify the pattern to be shorter. This could work with three single-tier layers and maybe a slip underneath.

>>7865430
I own that figure. The outer layer of ruffles would be attached to the over-skirt. There are roughly four layers after that. The bottom-most layer could be bloomers or a slip with a ruffled edge (either of which you may want when you've got a tulle petti, since you may find it itchy). That leaves about three layers of ruffles for the petticoat. With a gathered skirt, all the ruffles will be a mass of volume underneath anyway, so it's unlikely that you would be able to differentiate the layers.

I'd draw you a picture if I wasn't on mobile.
But basically, measure under your boobs, then right at your waist. Then the distance between the two lines. Then measure how long from the waist you want it to be (I'm 5'6" and 14.5 inches is a nice buttcovering miniskirt, but you can always start longer and hem it until you like it). Use a measuring tape to kind of eyeball how much you want it to flare out at the end. If you look at the skirt, there's 6 panels of equal size, 3 on the front, 3 on the back. Assuming you're a smart cookie, you should figure out how to divide your measurements (hint: by 6) you took properly to make those 6 panels, with seam allowances. They'll look like the front panel in the drawing, if you did it right. I hope this doesn't sound really condescending. Good luck!

Both sides would look like this I think. I gathered that by looking at the front, where the front 3 panels are evenly spaced, so I figured it would be the same on the back.
I guess in that picture, the panels on the side are seamless, so it makes 2 small panels in the front, 2 monster panels on the side. But it would be a lot easier to just do the 6 of the same one, as long as you're fine with having seams on the sides.

So, new to makeup here, I'm curious about how to go about doing Ghirahim's skintone in a future cosplay. I've tried using some Ben Nye body paint before when I was younger for a different Halloween outfit, and needless to say I was terrible at it since I had no prior experience to using it.

Anyway, it's not completely gray, it's more just like a pale, gray-yellowish complexion. Is there a way to tint my entire body that color, in a way that still shows the contours and muscle definition of my body? I'm wary about using body paints, especially if I'm going to be wearing all white, but a morphsuit doesn't seem like it'd do a proper job and I'd still have to worry about the face makeup.

I'd also have to figure out how to properly make diamonds in a white morphsuit for the outfit without it stretching out of shape, but I'll cross that road when I come to it.

Okay so I really need some help here.

I have to sew this awkward seam (pic) for my costume. It attaches a shawl to a top. No matter what I do I can't get this to be sewn together.
If I do it any other way, one of the squares gets stuck inside then if I sew it this way pinning the ends together, the square doesn't line up.
PLEASE help. I really don't want to have to use fabric fusing.

Also if it helps at all, I'm just using a lycra spandex.

No. It's just a swimsuit/leotard pattern with a sleeve.
There are plenty of patterns out there that will suit that.

You do want to you a stretch dance or swimsuit fabric and will sew it with a stretch stitch.

You do not need a mannequin or anything to sew it. You will just try it on inside out and make adjustments as you need to.

No you cannot make a pattern with plastic wrap unless you really know what you are doing as plastic is a non stretch and you need a pattern made for stretchy things.

Two questions, /cgl/

What is the best material to make my giant triangle out of?

What is a still moderately decent material to make my triangle out of that can end with this cosplay looking good but foldable/rollable/taken apart/whatever and packed in airplane checked luggage?

(I would prefer not to have to take the train to the conventions I'm wearing this at. I will if I absolutely have to, but I'd rather save myself the 10 hours of travel if I can. I would rather check an oversized bag that has nothing but my stupid triangle in it if it's at all possible.)

I was thinking some kind of EVA foam maybe.

>> No.7868024

>>7867993

Use foam core. It's rigid and lightweight and great for this sort of flat surface pieces. You have to watch out for bruising on the surfaces so I would suspend it in a cardboard box bigger than it and surround it with packing peanuts.

I would use tape on the edges on both sides of the joints. Use painted posterboard to make a piece that go over the tape to hide the joint.

>> No.7868049

>>7868024
That is all really great advice, thanks.
I had actually considered foam core earlier but was afraid it wasn't durable enough for the con floor. (I want it to last through two conventions - Sakuracon & Kumoricon)

Good idea on the joints. Would duck tape work fine or do you thing gaffers is a better bet? I've got both (in white) lying around the house.

I barely touched water, so I'm not entirely sure how that happened, but now I'm faced with what to do about them. Actually, they do very much look stenciled. Since the top matches and there is some folding at the knee, I'm guessing she made them out of spandex. I'm the guy from a few threads back asking for help with my possible Saitama cosplay, and my horrible habit of procrastinating has not helped with attempt to work on the costume. With a 10/31 deadline, I'm not entirely sure if my complete inexperience in sewing is going to cut it, but I thought, "Hey, why not just try to make the possibly hardest part of the outfit first, the gloves, and see how long it takes me/how good they end up looking and see if I'll have the drive to finish the rest of it by con time!". I've seen quite a few glove tutorials that all seem to be the same technique in slightly different ways, so I assume I should just go with whatever?

Pleather seemed like a good choice for the shininess of the gloves, and I went up to my local Joann's to scope out the price and what not. It might be a little TOO shiny, but that won't be a huge deal. Price isn't bad, a little less than $5 a yard so no real harm to my wallet if it doesn't work out, but I haven't been to a craft store in the middle of the day on a weekend in a long time and didn't even consider the possibility of a large amount of middle aged/elderly women lining up to get their fabrics cut, and immediately left after scoping out potential materials. So maybe I'll go tomorrow earlier in the day if I feel like it, or after work Monday.

The other material I scoped out for was the suit and wanted opinions on weather I should go with fleece, flannel, or something else. To go along with my sewing inexperience, I obviously have no idea what I should go with in this situation, and would prefer it to be comfortable. I don't plan on going only in my boxers in the thing, but I'd still like to not be itchy all weekend. One anon's suggestion was to look for a pajama tutorial, but I haven't looked for one of those yet. The cape I figure will be a much easier personal choice because I can go for look and not how it's going to feel on my skin.

Pic of the pleather in next post.

Like I said in the other thread, if things go down hill and I don't think I can finish it in time or I just can't do it with lack of ability, I'm going to screen print an Oppai hoodie. It will be much lamer than the hero costume, but it'll work for the weather and I'm going to be bald regardless.

My thought was to add a pair of black cargo shorts, black white ankle Chuck Taylors, black leather motorcycle gloves, and a waiter's quarter apron. For the back I was going to take a black bistro apron, cut it in half vertically, and rehem both sets of edges, then stitch them together about 6" down from the top in order to get the split apron she appears to wear in the back. I'm drawing some inspiration from Zell in FF VIII and Tidus in FFX on the silhouette for a male brawler.

Get a teflon foot for you machine if you can, otherwise you're probably going to have issues with the pleather slipping around on you while you sew. Bulldog Clips were recommended to me, but you can go to Joann's and ask for quilting clips. They work just as well, I prefer them.
Any marks you put in pleather WILL stay (pinning, sewing and seam ripping, indentions), be careful and get a test scrap to practice on first. Also temporarily cold > overheating

Red-headed guy here.

Really wanna do a Vivian James cross-play, but have scouted and scoured the 'net in search of the most vital piece of the costume, but no luck: The purple/greens striped hoodie.

Right now, I am eye-balling a green/purple striped polo shirt, and that will do in the meantime.

p.s. I really like baja hoodies (seems like Vivian would too) so if you know where I can get a green/purple one, please let me know.

A conventional hoodie is fine too.

Any suggestions on how to do the fade. I was thinking about getting a wig in the lighter color and dyeing the rest of it to the darker color. That's a lot of hair to dye though.

I also thought about sewing the light wig hair to the dark wig hair, but I'm not sure thats how wigs work.

Which version are you making? Either way, spandex. Spandex everywhere. Do you own a sewing machine? If you do not, go get one, along with a stretch needle. (A stretch needle is different from a ball point needle, and I have found it really cuts down on skipped stitches, especially with metallic spandexes.) It is nigh impossible to hand sew spandex.

www.stretchy.org is a pretty OK resource on making your own zentai/catsuit, but... honestly it's so cheap and easy nowadays to get a custom one from china that it's really not worth it. Plus, you really need an overlock machine to make a full zentai if you don't want to pop seams all over the place. If you're making the white version, double up. There isn't a white spandex out there that isn't somewhat translucent.

I'm pretty set on doing the white version, since I think painting the chest with the symbol would be a bit odd and might wear off throughout the day. Ok.

So I'm working on these shoes, which require this white ribbon border on them and this white template of ribbons on the front.

Only, even with this super thin ribbon, I can't get it to bend enough to go super evenly around corners. Last night, in a fight of frustration I just flipped the ribbon on the border just to make it take the corner. You can see the results in the picture. I'm not sure if it looks good or bad or if it'll even be noticeable on a pair of shoes (nobody is going to put their feet next to my head... I hope).

Also the bunch of white ribbons on the front have exposed edges. The mod podge should stop them from fraying but I can't cover them with a border because of the same ribbon bending problems. Is there anything I can do here or should I just leave it?

Thanks for any help. I'm just can't tell if I should be freaking out or not.

PS: The gap in the gold ribbon at the front isn't a problem, that'll be covered up by a cameo soon (yep, Sakizou design).

I assume you're referring to the guy standing in the middle of the gif.
First step is to break it down. What item do you want to start on first. I suggest doing it in layers, starting what goes on first to what you put on last. While doing this you can decide where to break things apart, what you're going to try and buy and how to do some of these things. [like what you want the sleeves to attach too, if the cuffs are separate, and what that leg thing is.] Once you have ideas on how you want things to look hunt for pattens, make some yourself or ask for advice on the specific item.
At least that's what I usually do. Just get started by breaking it down and take it one step at a time.

What wig would someone choose for this? (Alucard from Hellsing)
Annoyingly his hair is really ambiguous, and not consistent throughout the show.

I'd like to use "Epic Cosplay", and I've narrowed it down to a few ideas, but I've never styled a wig more than cutting bangs, and it might be stuffed under a hat a lot, so I'm not sure which to choose.

Youre going to haev to do a combination of bith. you cna probably find pants in the right shade(or just dye it) and modify it so the top hem is right. You can find a tank top the right color as the undershirt. For the top you could probably find a blouse you can steal the sleeves off of but you might need to make the top chest piece out of worbla (maybe craft foam) and either cover it in fabric or paint it so it sticks out from your body. The rest could be just model magic or painted plastic.
