its a great tutorial, but i had to tweak my pattern a lot afterwards to get a decent "pear" shape. I think the hardest thing for this is making a good shaped hood. I've gone through at least 4 revisions and still making more to fix the shape to be more round and consistent. I struggled a lot with a cone-shaped hood.

>> No.7856881

>>7856785
Hmmm lets see:
A kigu typically takes 4.5 yards of fleece to make, minimum. And about 1.5 yds of elastic for the four cuffs.
Line the hood, it will hide all the stitching from the face/ears. I use cotton prints for a cute extra touch
Anti pill is a bit thinner than Blizzard fleece.
Buy fleece at JoAnns using coupons. NEVER PAY FULL PRICE FOR FLEECE!
Draw up a design first so you'll know what shapes you need to make and what colors ect. Don't be afraid to simplify the character.
Sew small details on by hand with a simple whip stitch. Sew bigger details on with your machine. You can use a tight zig zag (satin stitching) but this is a more advanced technique.

And yes that tutorial is a decent starting place but don't feel like you need to use those exact measurements!
Also I don't make my hoods like that, I just use two back pieces, plus the brim which is a rectangle. I got my hood pattern by tracing a hoodie, and then modifying it. (round the back point off and make the whole thing taller) The taller your hood pattern the rounder it will be around your face.

>>7856802
minky is not really an apparel fabric. You could use it for some elements, but don't use it for the main body. I doubt it would breath well at all.

>> No.7856952

>>7856930
Email me if you want a quote please! And include some refs.

>>7856937

Okay so you make the ears and you make the bottom about an extra inch long. Stuff them if you want. Now measure the width of your ear bottom, then cut a slit in the hood that size, stuff the ear bottom in so your extra inch goes past the slit, sew it in there, then trim the ear excess. Same thing works for tails and wings.
Make sense?

I received this light-coloured Rilakkuma today and it also has a (hidden) zipper down the bottom. but yeah the whole thing was like €18 delivered, so I honestly can't complain.

I'm not sure what to think of it. It makes it look even more like a baby pyjama which I don't like that much, but the overall quality is all right, fabric feels good. Stitching and machine-work is always a bit messy on the cheap knock-offs from China, but I'm so afraid of receiving a knock-off if I do search for an expensive one that I either buy custom or knock-off and nothing in-between

Pretty cool hand-made ones! I think it's so cute that people make their own

It's an entry-level costume to a lot of really good sewers out there. You start with easy peasy kigus, and eventually you work your way up to more difficult costumes

SORRY IF THIS IS SUPER NOOBY but, does anybody know of good places to buy kigu that aren't knock offs? I don't really want a knock-off because I want something that will last regular use and be fairly warm (I want one to use for winter and camping pajamas, with the added bonus of being able to use it as a cutesy costume if need be). But $60-$80 for a kigu from http://kigurumi-shop.com/ seems a little steep to me and I don't know of any other stores who sell them to be able to try to find a better deal.

I see now that somebody up top mentioned they do have a $10 off coupon available for Kigurumi-Shop so that makes the price what I'd consider a lot more reasonable, but if anybody else still wants to recommend some shops I can check out anyway that's be rad.

just a little heads-down.. Sazac kigurumis are made in China. Although their will be stricter quality control compared to your average eBay kigu, they are not per definition going to be better

Now I know that a lot of good and bad things are Made in China, or the PRC or whatever, but just a little reminder that you are fooling yourself a bit when it comes to Sazac.

depends on tons of stuff. For one, material. Cotton footed pyjama is going to be sturdier and warmer than thin fleece kigurumi

but yeah, >>7887066 is right. way too many variables. I have at least one kigu that's made of really super thick fleece you practically can't wear it to bed, and others are thin enough to wear during summer. I know this wasn't the point nor anyone was asking, but washing fleece is pretty bad for the environment. Lots of little micro-fibers let loose and are released into our water. It contributes a lot to the amount of plastic waste in the oceans (fleece is basically PET, same material you make coke bottles from)

but yeah, lol, that wasn't the point. Your suggestion on how it should be washed is fine.

Just an honest question..

How often do you guys wash your kigu?

I've worn most of my kigus maybe just a couple of evenings/ night, never outdoors. Not sure if I'll ever wash them unless they actually started smelling of sweat or had a stain on them

>> No.7913760

>>7913706
I wear mine as loungewear/pajamas, so I wash them as frequently as I would wash pajamas - for me that's once a week if I'm wearing them every night straight after showering, and not getting sweaty/gross at all overnight. Any hint of getting sticky and I usually chuck them in the wash. I think it depends if you're wearing much underneath, for example wearing just underwear vs. having t-shirt and shorts on.

>> No.7913790

Oh also just in case anyone cares, Spencers is selling "pajamas" of old 90's nickelodeon cartoons (Ren and stimpy, rockos modern life, etc) and some random superhero symbols for like 40$. I got a catdog one and its comfy as hell.

Yeah, it gets really fucking cold without central heating, so I wear them on the days I don't want to pay for heating. I think if you didn't get anything on them *and* you were wearing something covering your torso/armpits (e.g. a tshirt) underneath then you probably won't need to wash them that often. However I wouldn't wait until *you* notice the smell as most people are less sensitive to their own body odour than others, I'd say 5-7 times wearing then you should wash regardless of smell or stains because they'll probably have picked up something, whether it's food smells or party smells or whatever.

>Yeah, it gets really fucking cold without central heating, so I wear them on the days I don't want to pay for heating

Are your hands and feet still warm in them?

I don't personally mind sitting in a room without central heating during winter, the temperature naturally never falls below 15-18°C even without any form of heating, though my hands cool down and they get really slow and sluggish because of that

I've never worn kigu to bare skin, though. Fleece feels weird, I'd rather have it as padding around a regular pyjama, that way it's really nice to sleep in

yeah you're right that other people will notice the smell sooner than I will.. I'll be washing my kigurumis now after 10 wears.

I've had a thermometer in my room and it gets down to about 8°C - 'lows' here are about 4°C. 12-14°C is where my hands start being properly numb, but I have the seal kigu which has the hand mitts. My feet obviously aren't going to stay warm since they're sticking out, but if I'm not doing anything and pull my feet inside it's fine - otherwise I have my fuzzy socks.

yeah lol I recently helped a family member move into an apartment and that thing had single-glass panels everywhere, no rubbers around the doors and the walls were pretty thin. I wonder how long that place is going to stay warm.

though I have never heard of a student place where you pay your own heating. I had plenty of places that had electricity and heating included in the rent. but well, i guess not everywhere is the same.

That's definitely not a wallaby. Wallabies are about half that size, they hardly come above your knee, even the alpha males. I cared for wallabies when I worked at an animal sanctuary, they are pretty chill but kangaroos are as well. Finished up the toothless kigu, or well, most of it, in 3 days. The only thing i have to do now are the cuffs on the wrists/ankles and put in a zipper. I made this for myself and was possibly thinking of creating more to sell since friends showed interest. I have a few things i'll be changing, mainly some of the horn things on the head. My only real gripe is that it's pretty back heavy. Is there any way to stabilize this better or is that just pretty typical? I bought a Spyro kigu earlier this year and it's sort of back heavy too but i can tell this has more weight.
