I know this one guy who is ripped. He is quite short, however. ALL his "cosplay" is a variation on him being a shirtless version of whatever - that white puff ball thing from rainbow bright for example. He's basically a one trick pony that has no real talent.

Long story short , IMHO, once in a while is okay, if you got the skills to back it up.

If you're cosplaying a character that has been seen shirtless, go for it.

If you're cosplaying a character that hasn't, you're just being an attention whore.

Don't cosplay for the sake of being shirtless, if there's a character who you really love that happens to never wear a shirt that's different. Also although it's pretty rare some cons have rules against nipples showing even for dudes; doesn't happen that often but felt I'd throw it out there.

Back to your original question though, I think shirtless cosplays are fine if it's accurate to the character. Otherwise, it'd be an inaccurate cosplay.
So, if the character's usually shirtless, go for it. If they're not, probably best that you don't do it.

Either way, you've only started lifting weights, so you should probably continue for a while longer before you do any shirtless ones. The longer you go at it, the more ripped you'll look, so why not take your time?

It completely depends of the con. Most conventions do let you be shirtless as long as you're wearing something. Use common sense and have some self-awareness(this goes for both men and women).
