Alright, so I'm working on Edea Lee's valkyrie outfit from Bravely Default and I've hit a little road block. I was kind of futzing around and came up with a general idea of how I want to do her.... leg/side armor? I know it's fabric and it doesn't look like armor, but I tried a more sturdy armor (thermoplastics, craft foam, etc.) and it just looked kind of silly. Anyway, I like the look of the armor when it's not wrapped around my leg and just sitting down, or if i just kind of set it on my leg it looks fine, but when I attached it to the band it got much smaller. I'm a self taught sewer that learns by error, so I was wondering if anyone had the spacial reasoning that I don't and could help fix the problem of it seeming so close and small when I really attach it to my leg. I tried putting that smaller piece in between the band and the actual armor to push it away from me, and it helped a little, but not much. Maybe I just need to make that middle piece wider and a little longer? I'm going to try that next.

I was also thinking about maybe putting a little boning in it, but that usually tapers in, not out? The zipties I kind of tried to attempt that with didn't work out, so that probably won't either... Maybe a thermoplastic support system?

Bluh sorry, I probably sound ridiculous. Thanks guys!

So I really want to make an Edward Kenway costume for the renaissance festival in a month. The only problem is, I'm just getting back into cosplay after an almost ten year break so I'm super rusty, Any chance someone knows of a pattern I can use? I really don't want to have to buy the actual costume from an online vendor.

but I'll paste it here too.

I've been going to cons for a few years now, and when I started I thought that I'd never want to cosplay, but every year I feel more and more that it would be fun as hell.

I'd like to do One-punchMan as I am bald as shit and shave my head regularly so I have that part of the cosplay down, but I have never really made a costume before, nor do I have much sewing experience.

How should I go about making his outfit, and if it would be too hard where should I attempt to commission it? I have until Halloween as that's when Youmacon is, but if I can't have it done by then I wouldn't be worried too much and just save it for ACEN.

You could carve and paint them and not add fur at all, maybe? Because the fur looks so thin, unless you can place every hair individually I think the fur will look really think and make them look chunky instead of delicate. I would make a base from worbla or something, then sculpt details on with clay if I were going to try it. But I would definitely be prepared to fail a few times also to get them that fine and thin looking.

maybe someone else has a better method

Check out the the furry thread, there were tons of fur tutorials and high quality fur shops posted which could help you.

Yeah I could do with some advice, I'm making the T51-B armour from Fallout 3 now there are two things I need help with first, I'm using the template for it using the pep viewer only trouble is that the patterns are only for the left arms and legs, what is a good way to make right sides. I was considering making a light box and reversing the pattern as the program has no reversing function, but that's a lot of work.

My other issue is how do I attach all the pieces to myself like for example there are several pieces that are designed to work as sections between larger sections, currently I'm thinking the only way to really do it is make some sort of suit that i can fix them all too

Look up a knife pleat skirt tutorial/pattern for her side skirt parts. You're probably going to have to frankenstein a knife pleated pattern and a box pleat with underlay ( http://www.sew4home.com/tips-resources/sewing-tips-tricks/how-make-box-pleat-or-inverted-box-pleat ) with a little panel over the front/back.

You could do fabric paint, screen printing (most expensive option), or embroidery (most time consuming option). You could get that gradient on her music note really easily by screen printing it, the other options will be trickier to get the same effect.

You don't need ventilation for fabric paint, it hasn't got any fumes. Just do it in an area you don't mind getting paint on or put some newspaper or old towels/a bedsheet down. Set them wherever to dry, or in front of a fan if you want.

That reference picture leaves their design pretty open to interpretation, you could do it with brushes or cut out a stencil. If you make a stencil, adhere it to the fabric temporarily to avoid paint bleeding under the edges (I use a washable kid's glue stick. rub it lightly all over the underside of the stencil, stick down and press it real well before you start painting)

Also, keep in mind that the paint will bleed through to the back of the fabric in places so do not leave them to dry on whatever surface they were on, pick them up and move them right after you paint. They'll stick.

Craft foam with a small rivet holding it on in the center, maybe? I just got a bag of rivets for leather work and they're pretty easy to use, make a hole>put rivet in>put top half of rivet on>hammer down.

I'd probably glue the foam to the fabric first as well to make sure the edges stay down.

looking on Amazon, the pens vary from "lasts a couple days/weeks" to "removes with supplied cleanser" to "washes off with soap and water and some scrubbing" depending on the brand.

The tattoo paper is probably just like kids' temporary tattoos and lasts a few days. it ends up being that weird film stuck to you rather than an ink, so I'd rule that one out.

Do you own face paint already? If it's the kind of paint you can thin with water, you could see if watering it down a bunch gives you more of an ink like effect.

Hey cgl! Ive asked about this before but need to ask again now that we have determined which outfit my sister wants. My younger sister wants to do a kitty pryde cosplay. Pic related. I haven't made a cosplay before but I want to do it well, and I figured cgl is the best place to ask because y'all are even more anal retentive than I am regarding clothing...
I have a pair of thick tights already, so I will be bleaching them to the correct blue for this cosplay, and then doing a tiny bit of shading to get a sort of muscled effect on the legs. Or is the shading overkill? She has pretty nice legs as she exercises a lot, I just wanted to define the muscles a bit more.
As for the weird blouse thing Kitty has going on I was going to make a zip up blouse with a high collar and shoulder pads that is attached to a pair of high cut underpants covered in the blue material.
Ill buy a pair of calf high boots on clearance and cover them in the same fabric from the blouse to make a kind of slouchy effect that can be seen in some of the comic drawings.
Ill make the mask in a similar way to the boots with a store-bought and then covered one.

Please let me know how that sounds.

What Im having trouble with is:
How to make gloves?
What material will be best for the blouse? I can't tell if the fabric is shiny or not but Ill probably end up going with some sort of rayon fabric because it has nice drape.
Also any recommendations for a way to temp dye hair to a more reddish shade? My sis loves this character, she had her hair cut to match and its brown and curly. Just needs to be auburn.

Oh and I just asked her this, apparently the cosplay isn't a big deal to her, she won't be wearing makeup or doing the hair. She saw cosplay on the internet and thought it would be cool but apparently doesn't care how the result is because she thought pic related is perfect and completely accurate to the character. Sucks because she would make an awesome shadow cat but won't let me actually turn her into the character, just wants to wear the costume.

If I'm understanding you correctly, you finished the wrist cuff before stitching the length of the sleeve? That will very likely not work. Bleach is wildly unpredictable especially when elastic is involved. Just get a pair in a closer color and don't shade them.

Blouse+underwear appear to be a one piece leotard. I personally think it would be easiest to make the whole thing in a rayon knit rather than attempt to cover a pair of undies. In fact, everything will be easier if you use a stretch fabric, just be careful inserting the zipper.

There are lots of glove tutorials out there. With stretch fabrics, you can cheat and just trace your hands.

That fact in mind, I would first go look at Ohayocon's policy on weapons/peace bonding/ etc. Figure out what's allowed and what's not, then start planning your weapon.

Assuming it's allowed, I would see about finding toy swords or making it out of wood/clay. It's okay to have no experience. There are plenty of resources online to learn how. Give yourself plenty of time to make the prop and make mistakes.

I don't know how well you'll be able to pass that for Renaissance tbh, the skirt looks too straight for a lot of the designs. You definitely need sleeves and some kind of neckline though, not just a cloak. I would suggest long sleeves with some kind of poof (puff? idk what they're called) either at the very top or alternating along the length of the sleeve. I think a square neckline could work with the dress as it is now; all you really need to add are shoulder panels. I'd suggest looking at some art and portraits from that period and picking out design elements you like. But definitely sleeves.

However, I'm about to paint my shoes and I've hit a snag. So the shoes pictured are this ivory color, similar to the trim of the ruffles and other parts of the outfit. Using ripped up and fraying burlap for the top (with bones and twigs weaved in), fur belt, suede or more burlap ripped pants or skirt (haven't decided yet). Making the marks like tribal paint, ginger wig, the obvious skull. If you're a bit fit, I would skip the top and do the fur tuft as kind of a long neck piece. Various bone or fur accessories. Ears. Tail. Boomerang.

Hope no one minds a j-fash question. I'm ordering some clothes online, but I'm slightly confused about the measurements for the pants. One of the pairs of pants only lists a waist and thigh measurement, and not a hip size. Would the waist measurement correspond to where you actually wear the waist band on your body, or your natural waist size? I've got a pretty big difference between my waist and hips, so I'm afraid if it matches my natural waist it won't fit my hips. I also wear pants low cut.

Here's a full body shot from some fan art. Since I haven't done anything like this before I don't know where to start on anything. I figured "Man, the cape will be the easiest part." but then there's the whole clasp on the shoulders part, and not knowing how to make the full suit certainly doesn't help for where the cape would connect. I'm completely lost on it since I've never made clothing before. I screen print shirts from time to time (which will work out nicely for an Oppai hoodie to just bum around cons in), but screen printing certainly isn't making clothes. Ahh yes OPM cosplay. I'll be doing sonic next year!!

For Saitama's suit, you just need a normal full body suit since his is not really tight to the body. That is, if you're going with his hero suit. His gloves aren't tight either, so my advice is to just get some off of ebay and just dye them as well as the boots. Saitama's costume isn't meant to look very "pro" as the rest of the heroes, so something like this would look cool and accurate. Best of luck and I'm hoping to see your costume posted here soon! :3

Look into a zentai suit? I've never used one, but I know there are certain trusted sites that do custom measurement suits, maybe another anon has a rec or link?

Altering the neckline with white fabric on the zentai suit could be a good option. Sewing lycra is kind of hard because of the stretch, you might want to ask your friend for some help on that. Look up boot cover tutorials. The cape studs you could probably just find giant convex black buttons. Sew them on to the suit and then sew button holes on the cape so you can use it as a way to attach the two! Go belt searching at thrift shops and then use a belt buckle as a base to build up your own (look into clay base + bondo filler and then sealing it and spraying it metallic) so it has the functioning back to put on a belt.

I can't tell if his gloves are shiny like pleather or like rubber... Gloves and boots look like they're the same material though, so just be consistent. Very long response, sorry!

Thanks for the advice and photo reference. I was certainly looking to do more like a full body suit that wasn't very tight since his looks baggy in the manga, so a zentai seemed out of the question unless I got a size up so it wasn't so tight.

If a zentai ends up being the easiest/surefire way to go, a trusted like would be great. There were tons of sites when searching and I'd rather not get screwed.

The only personal downside to being as bald shit in this instance is I normally shave my head ever other day or so, but would probably have to do it every morning at the con so it looks shiny as possible and risk discomfort. Might have to invest in some feather blades...

Just look for a pattern for PJ's or something. Then, modify the neck. The boots and gloves are pretty simple in design and the cape as well. Zentai suit would be a no for this because the fabric also looks kinda shiny and Saitama's suit is more matte. I just see his costume like pajamas lol.

I'm probably the only asshole here who hasn't made a Sailor Moon costume, so I want to ask a couple of questions about the skirt:

- What's a good fabric for the skirt? Should I go with a synthetic satin or something else? I perused JoAnn fabrics and didn't find anything I really liked, and I got a few swatches from an online retailer. What I'm finding is either too costume-y looking, or very stiff, almost papery. Anyone have a favorite skirt fabric?

- Circle skirt or pleats? I see pleating a lot, but I just think circle skirts are more fun to wear. Is there a consensus on what to make?

It looks like silk to me! It's very shiny and soft looking. It would be very difficult to manufacture silk yarn in the fineness that we see it today. Do an etsy search for "hand woven silk" and you can see some comparable textures. I don't know jack about historical textiles, however. Maybe you should call a museum?

I prefer the look of gathered double circleskirts for this style. The original anime had very crisp pleats, but the new series and the manga were much softer and more fluttery. For fabric, I've seen a few options that work nicely.

Matte bridal satins are popular, as are crepe back satins. I also saw a really nice version done with lycra, of all things. Let me see if I can find it again, because I was on my phone and didn't save it.

Also: horsehairbraid helps get that floofy shape in place. A lot of people make the skirt and it looks flat, because the costume doesn't call for a petticoat, but the fabric can't support itself otherwise. So horsehair braid is awesome.

OK, I've gotten my shoes painted and glossed (pictured) and I want to start gluing fabric like ribbons onto them and eventually glue a cameo onto each one.

What glue should I be using? Hot glue doesn't feel like it will cut it/everything will just fall off after a little walking..

Haha, wow, thanks!

Here's a pic of the shoes originally. I wanted a two-tone effect with the bottoms of the shoes so I taped off the soles with thin strips of painter's tape. I trimmed the excess off with an exacto knife. After that I gave them two coats of white primer (shake the can well and keep your can around 10"-12" from what your spraying or it will glop up). After that I did three coats of the blue. The paint was Montana Black brand paint, it's spray paint for graffiti artists and will stick to ANYTHING in any weather conditions and dries super fast. I love that stuff.

Following up with a pic of the shoes with their painter's tape on them.

Quick Tips:
- Make sure the painter's tape gets lots of overlap to prevent seepage.
- If you're going to have some tape hanging off the side, make it 1/2" to 1/4", because it's easier to cut with the exacto knife. If you have less the tape just kinda bends and is a pain in the ass to cut off.
- Burnish the tape. This means that once your tape is done firmly run your thumb up and down the tape it until it feel like it's going to light on fire. This improves the seal and closes any gaps.
- If something fucks up with the tape then redo that section of tape. You can't un-paint the shoes so being meticulous with your tape work is worth its weight in gold.
- When removing the tape pull it away slowly and gently at a 45 degree downward angle. This makes it less likely the the paint comes with the tape.

I purchased these and they fit well except for the leg cuff. It's pretty loose around my ankle and if I sit/get up a lot it rides up to my calf.

How do I fix this? Would making the ankle cuff tighter around my ankle prevent it from riding up my calf?

Heavier satins definitely can be, yes. Still can't find that lycra fuku photo either. Sorry. You could also try for a cotton or cotton-blend sateen? It'll be considerably lighter than duchess/princess satins (which shouldn't matter much if you do the circle method, since you're not gathering as much), but still have a nice "magical girl sheen" without being glossy.

Also there's something called LED light filter film that'll let you tint the light (that's what we used for spotlights in theater at least). You can cut the film to the size you need which is helpful. Pic related, not sure how expensive this shit is though.

Well, you need to undo the stitches before sewing it back together. If you don't want to stitch the sides/arms, you can also sew little straps to slip a belt through? A belt should give you a more feminine figure if you have a nice waist.

If you don't want to alter any of the original seams at all, consider getting some grommet trim and adding corset lacing to the back as a decorative feature. I would probably sew it on with a bigger gap at the waist so that when laced and tightened the trim appears even but has more fabric gathered in at the waist.
