Probably the one that literally changed the rules on us half way through the game, because it made the veteran players look bad. This was "Catacombs" in Louisiana.

Im not exaggerating either: They literally had an obscure rule in their rulebook. It literally stated, if there is a difference in IRL skill between different "ranks" of players, and the "old guard" (basically the founding five) vote for it, it changes from a target/level (arms, torso, head, legs and three levels of weapons light/heavy/magic) to an HP system, where your level is how many games you've been in. 5 games means you have to be hit 5 times, and 1 game... Well, you get it.

Mind you, this was quite small print, next to an asterix at the end of the rulebook. It was actually written as a backup just in case someone wants to think outside the box and threaten the power of the old guard.

That person was my friend Beau.

Now imagine cancelling the virtual wargame at bico because it

''Threathen the stability of the geopolitical world''

Stability?
We are the true faith, we want blood for our bloody god , we will crush everyone just for the sake of waging an eternal war to satisfy our god.

You can't tell us to stop doing this.

So yeah , this year would have been the worse larping-wise , but we just decided to have fun in other ways than actually playing the wargame.

The virtual wargame will come back next year but with some modifications

So my friend Beau and his other wizard buddy are not exactly the athletic types, but the man is nothing if not willing to solve problems with whatever means he can. He is a thinker and talker, not a fighter.

He's also friends with my SCA household/WMA group. We're fighters well enough, and he hired us as merc body guards for his wizard character. He taught us the rules, helped us get basic legal weapons, payed the event fees and kept us fed and in drink.

So any ways, at one point in the game, there is a magical meteorite that fell in the woods. Everyone wants it for different reasons, and PvP is a real threat if things go eggshaped. Beau and wizardbro (whos name escapes me) have myself and two of my mercs to protect his crafty-yet-squishy nature, as he intends to get a chunk of the meteor to study for whatever magic bonus he gets. Using our skill and unit tactics, we mow through anyone who is unfriendly, and in general wreck shit to the meteorite, with compliments on our ability and the overall good natured employer being jovial and trying to avoid confrontation whenever possible. They just wants a piece for the magic academy after all.

FINAL:
Low and behold, we arrive at the scene just as the old guard are walking up. The moment they see us, they call OOG timeout and talk to the watcher (GM). After a short discussion, the watcher said the rule of experience is now in play, and the game resumed... With the old guard charging us the second the time out ended. We receive the charge, and laid into them.

And they didn't fall.

We called a clarification time out. And the watcher explained that it would take a minimum of 14 strikes to the torso or head to kill the least experienced member, and also, he's counting that hit I took just as we called time-out and I was dead unless someone healed me.

Beau and his Wizbro both got pissed as hell, and we stood around confused, because the rule wasn't on the website, and apparently is only in the hardcopy rulebook. Wizbro rage quit, and we all followed him. As we walked out he and Beau told whoever we ran into what transpired, and we slowly gained a bunch of folks who were done with the petty alphanerd powergaming, and we all ended up going to get pizza and beer.

Thus ends my story of the worst larp I attended.

Also, most of the costumes (especially the old guard's) sucked monkey taint

Easiest way to do this is to compare your character in terms of IRL period/tech level and culture.

IE, Frenadian is typically a fantasy take on 11-12thC continental europe. Warhammer fantasy's Empire is a fantasy take on Holy Roman empire of Germany in the 16thC. Etc.

Now, on the subject of helms: Sallet, Barbute or kettle. Everything else is for fags.

I would really like to try larping. My parents used to bring me to Amtgard when I was a kid. But they left because some members were apparently creeps.

Is there any nice larping community in or near Houston? Or should I just be happy with Renfest, because it doesn't seem a lot of people are into it. Even my DnD buddies said it was stupid.

I went to a park near Dallas in Texas. Oldfag used a sword and shield for most of the day, but when he hit me in the chest he had borrowed the giant hammer from somebody else. I used a polearm mostly, since it gave me the advantage of reach and when combined with my height I could hit people from like ten feet away.

Most larps I know don't allow over 25. And a faulty arrow should be a non issue, as projectiles like that should be inspected before the game by an official. One shouldn't purposefully aim for the face or neck either, but once its out of the bow, all bets are off. The games that I have been in have never been a problem.

Quit being a pussy, or play a game where you throw beanbags while holding a foam covered unstrung bow if you're that worried.

nah, most of the pics are taken by others. I have a "few" photos that I took myself but none of these elf images I posted now was taken by me. They are all were posted on /tg/ somewhen and I just saved them.
As you can see some of the photos are made by professionals and some was just taken by fellow larpers.
As for the equipment, I don't know what others use, you can look that up in the exif ifno of the pictures if they have one. Personally I just use my mobile phone. Although I want to buy some kind of thumbcam or something that makes good pictures and I can hide it well but I found nothing that fits those criterias

American actualy. and the draw limit is 30lbs, all arrows must have heads 2.5inches in diameter or larger, and cannot fit through a 2.5 inch hole. the shafts(before the actual foam) must have a penny ontop to ensure the arrows dont make their way through the foam. and then the heads are usualy pretty thick too. its a hard hitting fun game. that being said, most of our injurys are indeed from arrows, usualy not from a direct hit though. usualy the arrow hits a shield or something of the sort and bounces back to hit someone with the nock. etc etc you get the picture. but it is indeed part of the game, and injurys from arrows occur maybe once every 5000 shots. its not less a risk that normal athletes would take in say wrestling, football, or even baseball. shit happens you know?

Seems to be a sallet with a split close helm visor to my eyes (notice that the top part of the eyehole is a seperate sheet to the rest of the helmet, I suspect also articulated on the same joint), given the lack of an integrated bevor and the presumably articulated neck plates. That's the tricky part, premade helmets like at larpshops tend to be of dubious accuracy/quality, ie riveting/welding the plackarts onto the cuirass, playing mix and match with regions and time periods etc. Finding a blacksmith would be ideal, but it's a long and costly process. Making your own is a possibility, but it's likely you're going to have to have lots of experience to work up to something like that.

General question. Does anyone know an european shop in which I could get an helmet similar to the one in the attached pic? I've been looking everywhere and the only thing that comes close is some stuff on dein larpshop that isn't accurate at all. I'd get one of these if there's no other alternative.
For those who wear armoured tabards, do you wear them over or under the chainmaille? I've seen a few Osprey-equivalent illustrations of 12th Century knights (specifically crusaders) wearing it over the gambeson and under the maille. Is it just a matter of personal taste?
Sorry but I'm very obsessed with this kind of things.

Also, Frenadian Breakfast, how's the climate at Bicolline? The friend who invited me there said it's a hilly area so it's pretty cold and that it rains quite a fucking lot.

On another note, does anybody travel with their larp equipment? I live in another continent and while I'm pretty sure I can carry all of my armor and costume stuff in the luggage, I'm pretty sure Larp weaponry would raise a brow or two. I've arranged something with a friend, but it would help if I could carry most of the equipment in the luggage.

Armored tabards. You mean coat of plates, right? I've heard them referred to as armored surcoats sometimes, but that's new.

Anyway, my understanding is that it usually goes over the maille. Those things are too pretty to hide under your maille. Using any splint at all, out of curiosity?

On the topic of travel, I manage to fit all my stuff in an archery bag, sometimes someone might wonder what musical instrument's in there but apart from that it's fine. In my Australian experience, I've seen a few people from my larp have cops be chill with them with a bag full of swords while wearing maille, and those that conceal their stuff mainly do so to stop the constant barrages "what's that?" from other commuters. From those that ship their stuff over here, from what I've heard they have to make sure to specify that it's a prop on the labels or something to not get held up at customs, but apart from that I'm not too sure on international travel.

Yep, I meant armoured surcoat, I've experienced that the term "coat of plates" causes some confusion with some people who assume I mean "full plate" (yes, that actually happened). I was asking because of this illustration, in which number 5, the armoured surcoat, is placed under the chainmaille. I've seen a lot of examples in which it's worn over the maille like in my previous picture, so right now I guess I'll just do whatever I want with it.

>Does anyone know an european shop in which I could get an helmet similar to the one in the attached pic?
I'm pretty sure you won't find a larpshop that will sell a helmet like that, you have to custom made it or something. Slightly similar things you may find although.

>For those who wear armoured tabards, do you wear them over or under the chainmaille? I've seen a few Osprey-equivalent illustrations of 12th Century knights (specifically crusaders) wearing it over the gambeson and under the maille. Is it just a matter of personal taste?
Sorry but I'm very obsessed with this kind of things.
depends on a lot of things but yeah, basically a matter of taste, there were even pictures somewhere where you can see that chainmail was worn under the gambeson and stuff like that.
I basically travelled from Hungary to Drachenfest by train, with armor in my backpack and halberd, sword and flag in my hand. Noone really cared about it, although the halberd was kind of too long for mass transportation

Wearing a second gambeson over the maille was actually a thing, and I think he was referring to that. Otherwise, the only thing I can imagine about wearing your gambeson over the chainmaille with no padding underneath is CHAFING.

I guess I'll contribute dumping some great reenactment kits pictures I found and saved. This one is more or less the typical loadout italian communal militia wore from the 1000 onwards till the end of such institutions.

It's not THAT uncomfortable, you can wear your chainmail without gambeson level padding underneath it. A 2 layers of linen and 2 layers of wool for example gives pretty much enough "padding" to wear it and those layers could be found in a lot of civilian clothings so nothing really extra there

Horey shiet man, thanks! Not only the model is very similar, but also damn cheap! It also has another model I'm interested in for another kit and it's like just 70 euros. Wow.

The folding/portable shield idea isn't bad at all, but I might have problems applying it to a pavise or a kite shield

In the meantime another picture, another infantryman in much heavier gear, same time period but style and weapons are extremely typical of venetian troops

Yeah, it was fucking hard and given the brief we got on Sunday I think some of Saturdays orcs were taking the piss a little. We were very strongly reminded, that having the crew orc breastplate was NOT enough to give extra hits, and would only count as medium anyways. I got the feeling that some of Saturdays orcs were running around with just the chest and claiming full heavy from it.
However, I would not have changed the battle at all. The Empire needed a loss on the battlefield, and Wintermark especially had become complacent.
