>ship order via EMS
>sent to Chicago from China last week
>no tracking update since then

It's now been in the mail for over 9 days, and I have no idea where it is. Is it lost? Has USPS just been a dick and not updated tracking and it'll show up tomorrow? If customs is backed up will they not even update tracking?

At least I got insurance.

Also general mail horror stories.

I'm looking at USPS's site and there's no update. Just that the original country is getting ready to ship. Can it take this long for it to even arrive to the states? Everything I've ever ordered EMS at least gets to the US in less than 5 days.

hey OP I'm another chicago anon. I had a taobao order ship out from china via EMS on the 27th of last month. Tracking didn't update AT ALL until after I got the package on the 11th of this month. Mine have always cleared Chicago the same day it arrives, I can't imagine having to wait a week. Whenever my package arrives in Chicago, I know it'll be at my house the next morning.

Anyway good news for people that hate picking up packages or missing them because of work- USPS has started waiving signature requirements because it's such a fucking pain to drag packages around for multiple days and a hassle for the customers to come pick them up. My blouse from Baby got left at my door when I was at work, which was pretty awesome. I'm not sure if this only works for packages under a certain value, though.

It really is up to our discretion as to what a "safe place" is, and some neighborhoods you just shouldn't leave packages in. I don't deliver to any apartments but I wouldn't feel comfortable just leaving packages out there, especially anything that seemed expensive. Our office advises us to take that sort of thing back for pick up if nobody is there to sign for it. But the carriers that deliver to apartments aren't generally given a lot of leeway on time to get those finished in and those offices are crowded, and so unfortunately you get people taking shortcuts and just trying to get the packages out of their trucks. I'm lucky enough not to work delivery in a big city.

I've had a package sent EMS from California to Arizona that got lost in the mail. When I called asking where it was, I was told they don't know. Like how the fuck do you not know where an EMS package is.

Also had another package coming from New York to Texas that took over a month to get to me after it was mailed.
Had a tracked package coming from Japan that was MIA for almost 3 weeks once it entered the US sorting facility and left to JFK. I called my post office, the main USPS line, and the sorting facility that it left from to find out where it was. No one was sure where it was, but would look into it. A few days later the tracking finally updated and I eventually got my package.
And a package that was delivered to the wrong house. No idea who got it, and the postal worker that does my route couldn't remember what house they ended up giving it to. I hope the asshole who kept my package fucking choke on it.

I am going through my mail horror story right now. The address marked on my package was incorrect, and in my trying to retrieve it, it went to at least three other states. Finally it arrived in Chicago (so close, and yet so far) and there was no tracking update for weeks, so I contacted the post office and they said they opened an investigation. I spoke to them at least once a week, and now its been two months, and FINALLY someone responded to me saying the package has most likely been returned to the sender. So I contacted my shopping service and let them know, and offered to pay for shipping again if they can resend it when it arrives.

All the shopping service does is read the tracking information and say it has arrived in Chicago. Its taken me three emails to reach someone who seems to understand the situation, and they are asking for proof that the package has been shipped back to them. The proof will be when they receive the package, I guess?

I am just so frustrated over this, its the second time in a row that an international package of mine has been completely lost. It was a large taobao order, and it was a lot of money to just write off as lost.

Yea. It needs to be forced once they reach a certain age. They are the largest cause of our lost and mis-routed packages. They also cause the most workplace issues by taking jobs ill-suited for them but are the easiest compared to being put on overnights or delivery. If they see you (a newbie) in a job position they want (even though you're much better than them at it), they will cry to the union and have you removed so they can have your job.

Also, i've had $60 worth of parcels lost in the past 30 days and i'll never get them reimbursed since he marked both as delivered. I'll never know what happened to them because he was fired shortly after for the previous fuckups.

Sent to airline doesn't mean it's actually made it onto a plane yet or even assigned a flight. China can be weirdly slow or weirdly fast without any real predictable pattern.

>>7820934
At least he was fired. Yikes. We haven't been able to keep many CCAs despite hiring so many at my office because they keep sending us out on the most difficult routes that none of the people with seniority want, yet they can't understand why newbies can't get them done "on time" without the sufficient experience. It's a bit of a mess, and it sucks because the the constant in and out of new people means that more and more packages are being handled by new people with very little experience and proper training. The first day they sent me out, I didn't even have a scanner or the pink slips on me and was expected to drop off packages. lol

It took them over 24 driving hours to make a fucking 40 minute trip.

Usually when I get packages from anywhere outside the state, they go to Harrisburg, then to Lancaster, and then from Lancaster directly to my PO. I don't know what the fuck happened, but my guaranteed 2-day shipping went out the fucking window.

My parents recently got a letter. The street and house number were correct... but everything else - name, postal code and city - were wrong. FREAKIN CITY! It wasn't even a nearby one, the letter missed the destination by half a country and nobody involved noticed.
I don't know how something like that can ever possibly happen, but it does and it completely blows my mind. I'm terrified for my purchases now even though I never personally experienced anything worse than package stuck at customs...

This isn't true at all. I've personally recieved packages with the wrong postcode numerous times (Home address and uni postcode entered by accident) Usually it just gets sent to manual sorting and as long as everything else is correct it's fine.

I guess this is sort of thread related.

Should I file a paypal claim to a possible storenvy scammer? I had bought a shirt from them in late august and I never received a shipping confirmation after waiting for 2 weeks. I sent them a message asking for it, but they sent me the following message: "I’m so sorry! I should be getting emails when an order is placed, and again when the payment goes through, but I didn't get the second one. Now that I know the money’s gone into PayPal, I’ll start working to ship it right away. I’m so, so sorry this took long at all, if you have any more questions or anything feel free to message me! I’ll message you when the shirt is shipped!" It's been a month since I bought the item and I still haven't received a shipping notification. I sent them yet another message last week asking for the item or a refund, but no answer. Somehow the owner's tumblr is pretty active, though. Did I get scammed? What should I do?

This reminds of a time I ordered a Yoshitaka Amano artbook.

It was somewhat rare having been out of print since 1980-something, but I managed to track down a mint condition one online that I had to import from Japan.

I was elated the day it arrived, but the postman hurriedly stuffed a parcel into my hands and very briskly ran off. The packaging was all torn up and had been secured from falling apart with rubber bands.

When I pulled off whatever bit of paper was left, I was met with this.

My mint condition copy of Genmukyu virtually destroyed.
It was water damaged, all the pages were ripped and torn on the inside, and it actually looked like it had been lain in the street and ran over by their mail van a couple of times.

Furious is not the right word. I was Sargeras tier mad.

Countries within EU (not sure about UK) are bound by the 23€ limit, though

It's not so much the customs fee that kills it (which is 20% I believe), but the postal company delivering your parcel will also charge you for charging you (it's really retarded, but if you think about it, someone needs to come to your door to collect the money)

So on top of the 20%, you also pay anywhere from 12.50€ to 25€ depending on courier in fees. So if you happen to buy a €40 item, it can cost you like €70 before you actually have it in your hands.

This really infuriates me, and I often ask sellers to mark their stuff down to €20 if it's not a stupidly large package, because customs and additional fees really kills the experience for me. I can understand EU wants to protect its homeland economy, but you're not protecting anyone if it's not made here.

>> No.7844873

You're shitting me right? Customs is roulette with the UK - EMS packages basically always get hit as soon as the value goes above £15 or so, and you have to pay VAT + whatever 'handling fees' customs decides to charge. Airmail and SAL get hit way less frequently though. I'm surprised you've never noticed this, unless you're only buying from within the EU/UK or from ebay sellers who always mark down the value as a standard thing...

>> No.7844912

>>7844873
Yeah I can confirm UK customs is "lazy" like this. The rule of thumb is that economy int packages have a low chance of containing high-value items (why the fuck would you send a high-value item with economy shipping).

so statistically, you're just a lot more likely to be charged on EMS compared to economy. However, I wouldn't use this logic by default to "save money" on customs. It will hit you on the head if the package is larger than a shoe box. It's just not possible for a large package to be worth less than 15 quid, hence why it's checked

>> No.7844930

>>7844912
So far I've gotten two 3.5-4kg boxes with about 60k yen worth of goods through UK customs and as it was marked down and sent as SAL luckily I was fine. If it was EMS they would have opened it (which HAS happened to me, literally was only 1 dress sent as EMS but they opened it and charged more.)

>> No.7844934

It all sounds very unprofessional.

UK customs either doesn't have the skill, the people, or the equipment to check every single package for value.

Here in NL, each CN-22 is read out. If the value exceeds the customs threshold, it'll be marked with extra fees. No chance to get stuff through it unnoticed. You should be glad you got that shit through customs

>>7845004
>Wasn't the accidental 1000euro fee on a bodyline package from the NL too?

Not sure what you're referring to, though. Customs start getting really nasty above €150 value. You pay both the 21% tax, the 8-12% customs fee, and the declaration costs of the courier. Marking down the real value is clearly illegal, but (accidental) marking up the value is not, so if a seller accidentally writes 10.000 $ (instead of yen) on a package, you're pretty much screwed.

>> No.7845636

>>7845634
>Not sure what you're referring to
I think that the story was Bodyline sent a package out, declaring the value at 1000Y or something, customs sees it and assumes it's €1000 and charges the fees accordingly, charging hundreds and not accepting that the price is actually €15 or whatever. They said they'd have to pay the hundreds up front and then take it up with the post office afterwards. Details are incredibly fuzzy, but this was pretty much the gist of it.

Hey just a question though.. in the city where I live there's like 4 different pet stores, and it's only a 100k population town, so it's not that big.

Do you live in the countryside, was it a special-designed large terrarium, or could you just not be bothered to pick up the terrarium yourself due to lack of a car?

I'm trying to envision why you chose to get the glass terrarium delivered by courier, instead of picking it up.

I'm going to get a pretty big 100 gallon glass aquarium in a couple of weeks and I wouldn't dare get it delivered by courier, they'd just break it no matter how careful you handle it.

My boyfriend's family lives in a pretty rural area and are very friendly with their postman. They bake him cookies and shit like that. I met the postman a couple times while I stayed over and we had exchanged names and such. One time I needed a packaged delivered to me while I was staying at their place and he happened to be the one delivering it. He said he was surprised to see my name on the packaged and joked if I had married and moved in already.

Seriously though the dedicated ones are so nice. I live in the city and every postman I've met had crummy personalities.

I've never had a problem with postal workers till I moved into the city. Lived in two rural areas and both PM were friendly or had no problems. PM in the city though, they.. are reckless and sloppy sometimes(can't say all of them.)

hey seagulls, I'm really confused.
I just got my EMS parcel from China today and I noticed that while everything else was well packaged, I bought like 5 pillow cases and their wrapping arrived completely undone. the cases are all swirled up together into a ball and this made them very wrinkly. The only plastic packaging that's been holding them together is sliced open. there's no custom tape on my box nor any notices that they opened my box inside.
I talked with my SS about this and she swore that when she warped everything was neat.

Hey just to clear something up.. I worked in mail delivery and mail delivery and package delivery are two very different things. In many parts of the world, package delivery is completely separate from regular mail delivery, even if it's done by the same company

that said, I was paid 2-3 hours (15$) per neighbourhood and on bad days it took 5-6 hours of walking through the rain and snow

I can't speak for everyone, but it was by far one of the worst jobs I ever had. when people spoke to me while delivering shit, I spoke back to them and tried to be friendly, but in the back of my head I just knew my shift was only going to take longer and ultimately I didn't want to talk to them and I just wanted to get back to studying for upcoming exams

also, the pay was so bad, it was a joke.

Wow, that's shit. I work mail delivery and get paid $15 per hour, not per neighborhood. I do both mail and packages, but the express packages are usually handled by a designated carrier because they arrive a little later and have to be delivered by a certain time.

I have plenty of postal horror stories from the other end of things, though. I don't think it's a bad job, but it's definitely not easy. Makes me wish people would bother packaging things properly. Busted jars of pasta sauce and jams in boxes not even marked fragile is the worst and happens weirdly often.

I'm the anon you commented on, I can also attest to horror shit. I didn't personally see a lot of foodstuff, but again I just delivered "mail", which is anything that doesn't need to be signed for and is thinner than 3cm. The reason being was that mail delivery (what I did) was without the aid of a truck; it was just me with a cart I had to push, whereas package delivery is done via vehicle.

That was what I hated about the job, anyway. I'm a pretty fit person, but having to drag the mail cart and all the bags through a neighbourhood is really tough. During Christmas time there was a lot of mail and I started losing weight and feeling pretty depressed. I just wasn't cut out for it.

Hats off to anyone that can do it for more than a couple of months. I could not. And technically I did get paid per hour, but the postage company simply states "this neighbourhood should take you 1.5 hours, that one takes you 2 hours", and the times they specify are grossly underestimated and with no chance to get extra paid when there's a lot of mail or the weather sucks. Mailmen get exploited a lot. I feel really bad whenever I see mailman and I know not to make a conversation with them because they probably can't get overpay

I don't know why this thread managed to stay alive for almost a month, but I'm a supervisor at my local USPS office.

Much like Fedex,UPS,Ontrac, and other shipping services, the tracking information all relies on the person with the ability to scan it appropriately and accordingly

The USPS isn't the best when it comes to handling packages because the business model itself didn't care for parcels for the longest fucking time. The current postmaster Pat Donahue doesn't give two shits about it either,BUT thanks to a few people in R&D,the USPS finally has some up to date method to contact you via text or email for every single second that it's in the hands of someone at or involved with USPS.

tl;dr:A lot of orders that have to go through customs regularly get neglected in a way that makes you wonder where the fuck is my package at?

We have to do extra labor to produce proper documentation on our end when it arrives to try and satisfy you.

If it's coming from overseas, you would be lucky if they gave enough of a shit to produce a fucking tracking number instead of us having to generate one

I'm guessing you're not from the US. I don't think it's that way in my region at all. Everybody where I work gets a vehicle, although rural routes you have to drive your own. I end up walking about 15 miles a day according to the app on my phone. The cart thing sounds like a pain.

I'm given an estimated time for how long each part should take (and they still act like it should take that long regardless of volume of mail or weather conditions lol fucking rain) but I still get paid per hour no matter how long it actually takes me. They don't want anybody working overtime at my office, so if you're unable to finish your route by a certain time they'll call somebody and have them split part of it with you. Only regulars/employees with higher seniority get "their" route and the new employees just fill in wherever we're needed.

>>7861181
My office obsesses over "priority failures" and making sure express gets delivered before noon. But even before I worked for the post office, I've always been impressed with my area's ability to never lose my packages and deliver them on time. I've noticed the tracking info has become a lot more detailed and better updated for my own packages recently, though.

>> No.7861261

>I'm guessing you're not from the US

That's correct, I'm not from the USA

mailmen walk their route on foot here, with the mail in either a mail cart or a bicycle depending on how large the route is.

However, regular mail is delivered this way in most of Western Europe, and perhaps in other countries as well. It seems absurd to do a mail route by car. You'd be mucking around with the car more often than actually delivering the mail. I can understand why you'd use a car when you're handling packages; due to their weight and size, but regular mail (post cards, advertisement, envelopes, nothing thicker than 3cm) does not weigh a lot

As much as I hated the job, I don't think using a car is a better solution. Perhaps it'd be nice to have a little motor in the mail cart lol, I fucking hated pushing that thing, especially at the beginning of the route

>> No.7861366

>>7861261
I can understand why a vehicle wouldn't be convenient for your situation, but for mine it'd be impossible to do it without. Most of my routes are a 10 minute drive away from my office just to get to the neighborhood. I typically have about 7 hours worth of mail and packages packed into my vehicle, which yeah does weigh a lot and takes up the entire back of my van and takes multiple carts to even load it all. I have to deliver to houses up steep hills and with barely any sidewalks and along major roads, and a lot of these houses have huge yards I have to cut through. Trying to figure out how I'd even navigate a cart through all that is pretty laughable. Carrying one street's worth of mail is already pretty heavy, carrying my entire route on me at all times would weigh at least three times as much as I do on a normal day. But then again, I think the USPS alone delivers about 40% of the world's mail volume. I think we might just have a lot more than you would elsewhere. I don't spend that much time in the van, only when I'm driving to the next streets or having to drop off packages, or mail to houses that are literally impossible to walk to and have to be delivered separately.

And then there's rural routes around here that would be a ten minute walk between each house. It'd be pretty stupid not to do that from a vehicle, especially since a lot of those roads aren't even paved hahaha. I think our sorts of routes must be pretty different here.

There's also online complaint forms that get answered in 1-5 working days and avaiable phone lines.
