I didn't say anything in the last thread but I want to say I enjoyed checking it out. I'm no furry but wearing a mascot costume is fantastic, and I'd love to learn how Japanese make their larger mascot costumes and not just the "How It's Made" mascot one.

It's basically the same as western mascot stuff, only proportioned better to be cuter and match a more "Japanese" aesthetic.

I really really really want to make a Simba quadsuit in the future.

I pulled some photos of the animatronics and float stuff from Disneyworld.

Does anybody have experience making arm-stilts? I want a nice fit with comfort, but I would love to skip a lot of novice mistakes that could potentially fuck it all up.

Also, what should I use to cut PVC pipe and how should I go about it?

Well, I'll bite. This cosplay idea is still something of a fantasy at the moment, but I'm collecting resources so I have some vague idea of how to get it to work whenever I actually get around to it.

Picture related of the guy I'd like to cosplay at some point, http://www.matrices.net/fursuiting.asp is the site I first found that had info (that seemed reliable). The head is the only thing I'd need to make fursuit-y, I think, but since I've never done anything like this before, would this be too difficult for a first project? Am I even looking in the right direction?

>> No.7817637

It is not hard even if it is your first head, the only times they fail it is when people just glue fur pieces onto the foam instead of sewing them together and then pulling it over the head.

Not so much a fursuit, but an animal costume.
Was working on this for a con but ended up being unable to go.
Will likely be using it at Halloween and another con coming up in the Winter.

He needs some grooming and work though

I'd like to cosplay a Felyne but I don't have experience in making fursuit heads either. I'm thinking about making the basic shape out of cardboard first and then building slowly on it with foam. Slow and steady.

>any advice for sewing with fur? How do

I would typically sew the fur with a loose zigzag stitch first, flip the pattern inside out, use a pet-slicker brush to brush out the fur trapped in the seams, Then turn it inside out and run over the seams a second time with a tighter straight stitch.

Or, you could sew with a blanket stitch! Very tight seam with no seam allowance to spare. Doesn't trap fur either.

I guess it's safe to assume the Japanese mascot costumes require a lot more foam (maybe denser and thicker to hold shape better, and somehow kept light) than the American ones. Especially that way they can get such huge shape and not get slack in places. I like how in >>7817517 likely the person's head is looking out through the hat, which is pretty spiffy.

Professional mascot costumes are very rarely made out of pure foam. There's often a plastic shell on the inside that's been vaccumformed into shape and then it's covered in foam. >>7817513 isn't a professional mascot but it's a similar way to how they're built.

I'm not really involved with the fursuit community itself, so I don't really know the customs regarding that. I found that posting the makers would be more relevant to the general crowd of CGL and those who browse this thread looking for inspiration and help. But if the general consensus is that the name of the suiters would be relevant then I'll do that instead.

The vision in kemono fursuits is just like wearing sunglasses, the vision is actually better than with using mesh but like mentioned in the previous thread, japanese fursuit makers love to NOT add fans into the head so the eyes get foggy without an anti-fog spray for glasses. If you add holes under the ears (basicly an ear canal) with fans inside you won't have that problem anyways.

Tumblr girls can jump into a lake of fire.
I'm talking about "TRIGGER WARNING" girls.
Fuck that shit.
When they say they have "triggers", they're referring to things that make them uncomfortable.
Fuck them and their "special" self-diagnosis.
Or even their REAL diagnosis.

I had a panic attack in the grocery store and had to literally leave my cart there and try to walk out calmly. Why? Because they were changing the whole goddamn store around and 3 people had asked me if they could help me with anything when usually I am left alone.
It was too overwhelming and I had to get into my car and cry for a half hour before I drove the fuck home.
But you know what? In order to fit into society, you CAN NOT expect others to cater to your quirks and insecurities, or even your issues sometimes. Because the world isn't fucking about you.
You need to either adapt or find something the fuck else to do if you can't put up with it. Fuck people who get "triggered" and then freak out on whatever helpless person unknowingly did it.

Know what I did after my freakout? Went to the same store a a day or 2 later after I had calmed down, and went finished fucking shopping.
Because I've decided I'm not going to be a degenerate piece of shit who blames my problems on everyone else. I need to immerse myself and work to become someone who can deal.

On the topic of sock paws, I'm going to experiment making some and I was wondering if there are any alternatives to sculpting with foam. Since these are just to get the method down, they don't need to be durable or anything. Do you all think if I sewed the shape of the toes and stuffed it really firm, I could glue those onto the sock instead of foam?

I suppose that could be an option.

However, it would be cheaper and simpler to use foam for the construction. Why try to bypass it using a more frustrating and complicated method?

You can also use a sock and glue the foam toes to it if you you want to end of carving and/or foaming the who foot.

not that anon and definitely not the maker, but I'm assuming it's charcoal foam. The same foam that is used to make custom padded cases for things like guns and cameras, or for sound deadening. You're really not limited by the type of foam you can get a hold of. Plenty of suits are made with the green stuff from Jo-Anns, though shopping around online will save you big bucks in the long run.

Pic related, it's a head by Wild-Life made with Jo-Anns foam (I am assuming it is; I haven't seen that hideous green sold anywhere else)

Are you asking about the image of the cut-off heel shoes? The white layer between the shoe's nude outersole and the black hoof is the rubber platform. I used these exact heels to make these shoes, but I tore off the orange pleather to expose the platform's core. When you pour the liquid plastic into the mold, you sink the platform into it. The liquid plastic surrounds the platform and hardens, creating a super strong bond.

I can't speak about the comfort of rubber vs. resin, but no matter what you do it's going to suck because of the weight and lack of heel support. Furry Echo made some hoof shoes with rubber. You could ask her. Something I want to point out is that in her video, she has to duct tape the shoe to the mold. This is because urethane rubber takes at least a day to set up. However urethane resin takes minutes, and you can sit there holding the shoe with your hands. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GttgTFWU5uw&list=UUyyWM4ScKdlzdS6OgZdEUiw Her singsong voice drives me up the fucking wall, though.

I was thinking maybe I could cut up a welcome mat, seal it together with glue and wood filler, then coat the whole thing in black rubber. Too much?

If it helps, here's a prototype that my boyfriend and I were working on a while back. It's a wood block screwed to a stiletto. These shoes were very cheap, so the sole had a lot of flex to it. People hold them to really high standards because they're the biggest seller of fursuit parts in the community, but you've gotta cut 'em a little slack. They're just a couple of 20-something girls churning parts out in their garage, learning the hard way how to run a business. Some of the inconsistent quality comes from trying to hire help. And as far as the horse copying thing, they were saying "this looks similar to one that we made, so if you wanted our horse blank this one will work." If they were salty about SGS copying them, they would have done something a long time ago. People have been white knighting for DVC about the horse blank for a while.

But bodysuits, it's being stretched and moved and actively used, so it's not the best to be used. I'm seriously thinking about doing fursuit commissions as a way of making some extra money. I'm not a furry in the slightest, but I really enjoy the challenge of making fursuits. I like making them, furries like spending money on them, seems like an idea to make some pocket money.

To the people who do commissions, how on earth do you get started? How do you get your name out there and your first few customers? What sort of business is it to get into?

I don't have a slightest clue about how thick I'll need to make it. I saw some foam of 5cm and 7,5cm thickness today. Would those work? How much do you think I'll need?

>> No.7859479

>>7859451
Just think about how many foam plates you need to cover the height of your actual head, then add how much space you want/need inside the head and about 2-3cm for the "skull".

I'm so happy I can ask you guys and not try and blunder on LJ fursuit comms.

I'm making myself a werewolf partial for Halloween using a blank resin head my friend made. I'm leaving the muzzle/face/forehead unfurred to give it that hairless face look. For whatever reason I was thinking, is it safe to paint it with acrylics? Especially on the inside of the resin (I just wanted to paint inside the mouth dark pink so it wouldn't look weird if I can get the jaw to move with my chin) where I'm worried about fumes.
And I feel like I've heard someone say before not to use hot glue because of fumes, because I need to glue the teeth in there, but I could be completely mistaken and mixing it up with another type of adhesive.

Since I'm only going to be putting fur on the outside of the face and the neck, can I just hot glue it straight into the mask? I haven't had luck finding any picture tutorials about attaching fur to a resin mask.

>> No.7859590

>>7859509

Fa/tg/uy here, acrylics won't be a problem as long as you give them time to dry. It may smell a bit, but provided you paint somewhere with a good airflow and let it dry fully before you wear it you'll be fine.

Same with hot glue, I've worn heads that had the fur stuck on with glue. Do it somewhere ventilated, and only wear it once it'd properly dried and aired out.

You still will have to seam the fur pieces together tho before glueing, otherwise you will have some ugly gaps on the head.

Fursuit-maker anon here.
1000000% true.

You end up roped into making ridiculously ugly, boring, and/and stupid suit designs that you absolutely HATE working on because A). the end product will look like complete shit in your portfolio for no fault of your own, and B). you just really fucking need the money.

The amount of people asking me for serious quotes but not having a single cent to their fucking name also make me seethe silently.

"Haha! I'll save up and message you in a few months!"
BITCH, I DON'T NEED MONEY "IN A COUPLE MONTHS", I NEED IT NOW!
Also, they don't fucking come back.
Ever.
I get asking for a quote, but when people say "I want a suit!" then are shocked at a 500$+ pricetag when it's CLEARLY state in my pricelist on my page, it gets old pretty damn fast.

Also the people who keep tabs on EVERY website you're on when they commission you: Twitter, Tumblr, Skype, Facebook, FA, DA... whatever.
I have learned to have accounts all under different names [I used to use a single username for pretty much everything] to avoid people pestering the shit out of me every single waking moment.
It got so bad, I no longer offer Skype to customers.

I've had a couple good customers, but you never fucking know.

If you enjoy being: toyed, belittled, haggled with, bitched at, accused of "stealing mai character/design", and a slew of other random bullshit, do it.

The reason I still do this?
I just love making suits. Every aspect of it.
So if you find you love making suits, stick with it. That's why I'm still in this.
If your goal is to make money from furries, just fucking save your sanity. It is TOTALLY not worth it.

I could tell stories enough to write a very long, bitchy book.

That's odd. Where were you looking? Were you counting on one reply from a specific maker, or did you make multiple inquiries to multiple makers?

What species? Arthropods aren't really common species to request, so maybe you scared off potential makers since most specialize in canines and mammals.

Shit, that'd be awesome if anyone could pull it off!
Although, as fursuit makers work mostly with fur, is that what you'd like this guy to be made of? Fleece, fur, and softer materials? Because that's what fursuit makers specialize in.

If you're not okay with softer materials, I'd check into someone who does more prothetics and Hollywood-esque monsters and ditch the idea of fursuit makers altogether.

Also, as a sidenote, the community have a lot of makers pissing themselves at the idea of getting lawsuits from companies owning these copyrighted characters, so it could be a small reason you were declined.

But it is sortof unofficially sanctioned, as 343, and formerly Bungie have both had other members of a certain group I belong to on stage at cons and releases, and have said how they think it is cool that people use their characters as inspiration for costumes and armor suits.

And most wouldn't be fur, but the same basic steps go into making something like this as they do in fursuits. Engineering wise, most of the problems are the same, heat control, etc... .

I did have a job listing posted on two sites for movie jobs listed under special fx/costuming.

If I could figure out HOW to build it for you, I'd offer some services up myself, but I don't think I'd be able to complete the project due to me not knowing what other materials to build that guy.

To begin, I'd take a good look at the Artist's Beware LJ and the Fursuit Critique account on FA. This can let you review potential commissioners and help you go in prepared.
Also, make sure the person is OPEN for commissions, or even taking them in the first place. It's happened to me where I find a good maker to learn they're inactive.

Realistic fursuit wise? I recommend-
•Clockwork Creatures (I think they're still active at least)
•Beastcub (Nice girl. Fursuits are her living so hers are gonna be pricey. She can do toony as well)
•Creatures and Creations (I met them at a con recently. They do really well from what I've seen in person)
•Artslave
•MagpieBones
•Temperance
----
Toony wise? I recommend-
•Morefurless (Popular for toony)
•Stuffedpandastudios (She's more suited for toony, but her realistic is good too)
•Savageturtlestudios
•FursuitingLLC
---
That's all I can think of currently. I can give more when I recall more. These are people I know who have made birds at least!
