Hey guys, I need to farm you for ideas. I learned how to walk on stilts a couple years ago, so now most of my costumes involve big tall people. It's fun to walk around events nine feet tall.

Anyway, my current WIP is Anubis, the Egyptian god. My problem is this: How should I decorate my stilts to look more like feet, and not stilts? Maintaining the illusion is key. More pics to come.

Here's my leg in a stilt. Making legs to completely cover the stilts is too expensive and would make them disproportionate. I was thinking about wrapping the "calf" and "foot" of the stilts in white burlap for the mummy look, then painting the "shins" gold, or putting decorative armor plates on them. Then the skirt would cover MY legs.

Thoughts? I welcome any creativity y'all can offer.

Also, I won't use this trip outside my own threads ;)

You could disguise the stilts as individual columns, so you could look like a statue while posing. If you made them look broken, it would be kinda ancient ruins-ish, so that would look cool.

Anon, look at the width OP's stilts, there's no way they will fit inside a mannequin leg.

I'm not sure I could get those inflatable legs to work...

Fellow stilt walker with same stilts.

There is no way. Your going to look very unproportional or it will look weird in general.

I like the column idea >>7816409 had.

Hmmmm with further thought, you could get away with black pants [dear lord make them yourself and don't just add fabric to preexisting pants like that one awful slederman] and maybe do boots on the bottom? Or just a flare like normal entertainer stilt walkers have.

What about a skirt, going from my waist to my knees (the character's mid-thigh)? That might even things out. I also have forearm crutches I could make into longer arm prosthetics.

Why not make digigrade stilts for something more canine?

Does anyone have any experience with these? How difficult are they to walk in? I was looking at using something like this but I'm worried about falling over or being unstable in a crowded con setting.

You have to practice

Not that anon, but that doesn't really help. Are you going to have to constantly focus on holding your balance? If someone knocks into you off guard, are the feet going to lose their footing? What if someone accidentally kicks the stilts? Will they tire out your legs after standing in them all day? Are they comparable to wearing heels?
How fast do digigrade-enthusiasts suggest your top speed be? Should you take tiny baby steps? Can you sprint? How long do they suggest you wear them for? If you step on an uneven path, how easy is it to recover, or are you going down? What do you do when you fall down?

Of course you can get good at them, but how difficult are they to get good at?

It'll take you about a month to relearn to walk in them and strengthen the right muscles for smooth walking. If you use that tutorial, I recommend making the "foot" a semi-circle shape like in the picture instead of flat so you can lean and balance better.
