Depression Kei (meaning depression style), also called hikikei, is currently one of the most popular styles in otaku basements.
The style is based around pajamas, unwashed garments, underwear, and human misery.
It began with the uprising of kawaii culture in the west, and the girls too sad to put themselves together to be kawiiwii.

Key aspects of the hikikei style include:

Make up to emphasize under-eye bags and shadows
Loose top-knot and bedhead hairstyles
Socks whose bottoms are stained black from shuffling around on bare floors
Too-large sweaters that can double-up as blankets during comatose periods
An emphasis on 'DIY kawaii' crafts
And the use of junk mail as origami room decorations

Not necessary for the style, but often paired with it include:
Tumblr addiction
Obsessions with kpop boy bands
'Otaku' culture paraphernalia such as hug-pillows, resin garage kit figures, and large collections of anime/manga and merchandise

The silhouette can generally be anything as long as it is loose or ill-fitting. It can be sack like, with a worn out sweater dress that started out as a sweater now long enough to cover your cheeks. It can be corpse-in-a-garbage-bag-like with a kigurumi. It can even be slightly scandalous, like wearing a dirty old t-shirt over grey panties and exposed hairy legs. Some flare can be added in the form of chip dust smeared all over your body, or weird little kawaii thing you found on ebay and stuck in your hair because what the fuck else are you going to do with it. There are few strict rules to depression kei, just as long as you look like you don’t give a shit wnough about yourself to look decent, but are decorated with cute things, showing that you still hold onto a glimmer of hope that you will be a better person some day.
If you don't have natural eyebags, you can always smear cheap black eyeliner under your eyes to achieve the insomnia look!

>> No.7805106

>>7805101
honestly I think the best way to weed them out is to just ignore them. If there are enough of them to create a negative feedback loop the mods will just silently delete them all as if they never existed.

>> No.7805110

>>7805105
>If you don't have natural eyebags
naturally these are the kinds of things that bitchy hikikei girls will gossip about.

Also while most of the style is limited to ill-fitting oversized type clothing items, princessey night gowns should also be quite allowed.

While great emphasis can be put on not giving a shit what you look like, the focus can also be shifted to self-empowerment, and the perks of always being alone! Since no one will ever see your pajamas in real life, you can let your real style shine through.

Here we have hikkikei doll in her natural habitat.
Unfortunately, due to the nature of hikikei, there are no candid street shots of hikikei girls.
Note the obvious fear of being seen by another human, as you can see in the background, her only friends are stuffed animals.
Her skin is sallow, and clearly hasn't been touched by sunlight since she graduated/dropped out of high school.
It should be noted that she is probably hunched over because she doesn't want her wild, un-managed bush to be seen.

Hikikeigirls here, mine is going to be more comfy kei than depression kei. so like cute comfortable outfits that can be worn out in public but have a pajama-y feel to them. Messy hair and minimal or slightly sickly looking cult party kei style makeup. Like you just rolled out of bed looking cute.

>>7805430
Thinking anything can go, it's more comfy materials and cuts than actual color scheme. Pastels would be nice though! I often wear flannel bloomers and an oversized t shirt on a daily basis and I think this would be cute and fitting to the style.

Hello,

Just an update - I have changed my blog name to hikikei.tumblr.com so as to me less exclusive as this is a style I can imagine males also being interested in. Here is the paragraph describing the style I have written, please tell me what you think:

Hikikei (derived from the Japanese word Hikikomori, which roughly translates to a reclusive person) is a fashion style based on being both comfortable and cute. It is both a lifestyle and a fashion, for people who simply do not want to spend a long time on their appearance, but still want to maintain an air of cuteness. The style essentially consists of pyjamas and roomwear with cute accessories, but the unkempt air seperates it from other fashion styles. The Hiki girl/boy can come in many forms, from the darker "depression kei" to the sweet and pastel "comfy kei". The origins of the fashion are on Septemeber 7 2014, where an anonymous user on the /cgl/ 4chan board requested cute pajamas to wear around the house. Other users identified with this need, and created a fashion style based on the concept of a lazy day lounging about the home. This blog posts advice for hikikei styles, inspirational photos, and lifestyle ideas.

hmm?

I like it! I have a link to your blog on fuckyeahhikikei.tumblr.com which is the official blog ring for hikikei tumblrs. Once I have my shit together I'll ask that everyone who wants to be listed on the blog ring put a link to the blog ring on their blog.

I might steal some of that description for the wiki (hikikei.wikia.com).
Here's what I wrote on the wiki:

>What is Hikikei?
>Hikikei (meaning shut-in style), also called Depression Kei, is currently one of the most popular styles in otaku basements.

>There are three styles of hikikei:

>>Comfy Hikikei, which focuses on pastel colors, soft and fluffy textures, cute pajamas and loungewear. It is the sweet side of hikikei fashion.
>>Depression Hikikei, which focuses on oversized, baggy, or ill-fitting, more grungy sleepwear and sickly complections. It is the gothic side of hikikei fashion.
>>Bipolar Hikikei is a mix of these two styles.
>Hikikei borrows from a wide mix of styles including Gyaru, Lolita, Cult Party Kei, and Soft Grunge.
>While the Depression Hikikei lifestyle focuses on laziness, apathy, isolation, and sleeping in all day, Comfy Hikikei focuses more on relaxation, self-pampering, cuddling, and bubble baths. Overall there are many different things that can fit into a hikikei lifestyle, as long as it encompasses a love for staying in your pajamas all day and loafing around in your room.

Basically it's just a resource for people to find a bunch of blogs that are related to a topic, and for blogs relating to a topic to promote themselves. To participate in the blog ring, I link to your blog on the hub page (fuckyeahhikikei.tumblr.com) and in exchange you link back to the hub page on your blog. That's all it is, really.
Mine will be a bit unorthodox since I think I will also make posts showcasing the blogs andwhatnot (and if other blogs become inactive, posting outfits/inspiration/etc as well) but the focus of the page will be links to other blogs, and the design will reflect that (like currently, all you see is the links)

And yeah, I guess the ill fitting part applies mainly to depression hikikei whereas oversized can apply to hikikei in general.

I had to go back and put more on because my phone/florescent light combo washed everything completely out. It also made the makeup look pretty uneven so bear with me.

I left my skin naturally sallow and went straight for the eyes. Found the natural bottom of my undereye circles and darkened them, then went above the eye and shaded in parts of the crease that are naturally darkened as well to deepen the eye socket a bit. Then I went over the highlight line in the undereye bag with white eyeshadow. I brushed a slight amount of navy around the bag, but it washed out almost completely. Last I used a couple coats of mascara, focused on the outer corners and didn't use any on the bottom lashes.
Ugh, it washed out so much. I am tempted to post my whole face because those pictures actually show something, but so many conflicted emotions bc 4chan

Everyone can be kawaii in Hikikei.
It a truly gender, weight, income, and cleanliness-blind fashion.

I've put together a more comprehensive guide to hikikei, tell me what you think!

There are two divisions of Hikikei: Depression Kei and Comfy Kei

Depression Kei focuses more on the general sadness of being a hiki. There is less color restriction in Depression Kei, but colors are often dark.
Common traits of Depression Kei:
Hair: messy, let down, obvious roots, sloppy ponytail
Upper Body: ill-fitting tops (too big, too small, too short), baggy sweaters
Lower Body: sweat pants, pajama pants, no pants at all
Under wear: old
Feet: any sort of ridiculous socks, crocs, ugly but comfortable boots, slippers, no shoes at all
Accessories: chip dust, leg hair, human filth

Comfy Kei focuses on the more rewarding aspects being a shut-in. Comfy Kei colors are almost always light or pastels. Comfy Kei often has many, many layers.
Common Traits include:
Hair: ponytails, pigtails, buns, braids, or let down and very fluffy
Upper Body: fluffy sweaters, big t-shirts, nightgowns, cardigans, pajama tops
Lower Body: skirts of all kinds, ruffle shorts, bloomers, pajama bottoms, generally anything with a lot of poof
Feet: leg warmers, long socks, the comfiest shoes money can buy
Accessories: bows, character hats, scarves, kawaii bait

I feel like this has potential if you change depressin keis name and differentiate it from being a hobo. Comfy kei just sounds like toned down fairy kei from how you have described it. There should be no depression kei, you make it sound disgusting. The fashion should focus on cute comfy outfits that can double as pajamas but still maintains cuteness and have an air of sloppiness.

Well that's kind of the point, depressed people don't really care about how they look.
It's kind of jokey and kind of not.

> The fashion should focus on cute comfy outfits that can double as pajamas but still maintains cuteness and have an air of sloppiness.

As of its several-hour-long conception, comfy kei has a loose definition. Cute, comfy pajamas fit right into comfy kei.

Oh god I sound like a massive bitch... Did not mean it to come out like that. I think the rules idea is ok but they should be more generalized and no substyles so people can experiment. That is pretty much what I was trying to say here but it came out bad. If you get too specific with the substyles, they just turn into different fashions. Like I said comfy kei just sounds like fairy kei but toned down. And depression kei is slightly offensive. I just think it should be hikikei.

>> No.7805973

>>7805971
You're fine, you were just frustrated.
It wasn't my idea to have two different substyles, it was suggested by a lot of people, so I thought it would make the community happy.
And since hikikei is basically anything you would wear to bed/around the house, then there are a lot of different possibilities for it, so I kind of think two substyles might be a good idea.
The moper and the dreamer.
They both spend all day inside, but one enjoys it and the other just does it.

I always get frustrated with stuff like this because I am a massive control freak. I just think depression kei could be renamed. Gloomy kei sounds cute! It's not offensive to those with depression (I'm clinically depressed and I was even offended by it, not the name but how i felt you portrayed us as being disgusting and pathetic people who live in their own filth)
I think that you should change your post so it explains what the fashion is (the hikikei.tumblr explained it pretty well IMO, and the wiki. They both seem to be adaptations of the same text but I don't know which came first) and then rather than putting specific items to specific styles that have barely been established, just explained the premise behind the styles. After we get more people into it, the rules could come because they would be based on what has been already created, not just some people playing dress up when we try to figure out what is going on.

>>7805981
When you put in guidelines telling people to be gross to fit a fashion then they will. Especially since yours are the only ones out there.

I think you are awesome btw, just want to share my opinions. Tone everything I say down a few times, I tend to come off very harsh in writing and I'm not sure why. I think it's because I like to be very concise so I just say what I want in the fewest words possible without all of the fluff that could make me seem like a nicer person.

This thread started off with a legit jfashion theme, a Japanese street photo pic (thus board relevant). Someone made a joke about 'depresion kei' and that person derailed the thread, not the naysayers. That joke should have been giggled about and ended there but someone decided to turn this into their personal self-post thread. This is now Tumblr tier which is great because apparently Tumblrs have been made dedicated to this unfunny shit, so how about you go take your gross slumber party there and have as much 'fun' as you want?
To answer earlier anon, no this not a jfashion it's literally yet another bunch of Westerners throwing kei at the end of something who took a joke too far.

I think it's nice for a "dollies day off" type feel, a super comfortable style for lolitas and people who want to be cute but don't want to spend hours to achieve the Japanese street fashion looks. So it's like super toned down versions of the jfashions we know and love, that carry the basic aesthetic but are mildly cheap so you don't have to treat them like you would iron gate or some other expensive item. You need to calm the fuck down. Watch some Nichijou. Drink some hot chocolate. Put on some comfy ass pajamas or kigus. Replace your tampons (or don't).

They're pajamas. You wouldn't wear it outside of the house other than at an anime convention.

What if we had something called "make-believe mondays" where we put on makeup, fix our hair, and get all dressed up like we're leaving the house to do something important? Like for example, we could wear school uniforms or formal clothes like you have a job interview or something

ok, OP here. I just woke up and read through the thread and wanted to clarify some things.
Firstly, when I made the thread and someone suggested the fashion, what I had in mind was something more along the lines of what was said here: >>7806078
admin-chan kind of ran with it in her own direction, and I think that direction is fine, although (and this is meant in no way to be offensive) since admin-chan doesn't seem to have a very good grasp on how others will take her actions, if admin-chan's style of hikikie is going to take off she'll probably need some other people subscribing to it. Currently her style feels like more of a joke, though she's taken some of the con/crit given in this thread and has already made an improvement thanks to that.
As far as the name depression hikikei, I was trying to be impartial and give everyone's style a fair chance, but after sleeping on it I do think that depression hikikei sends the wrong image. It may have even been you, admin-chan, who feared that hikikei would attract the "im so depressed" types who self-diagnose and feel like depression is cool and post cutting pics in their kigus or something, and I feel like by calling it depression hikikei or depression kei you're playing right into that, and to be honest your descriptions, although they are a joke, feel akin to something people like that would write too.
Overall because hikikei is centered on pajamas and houseware, I think that an overall aspect in all of hikikei should be independence, and not caring what others think of you. So, if this includes being filthy or disheveled for you, then that's ok, but I think that your descriptions currently take that concept and escalate it to the point of glorifying depression.

And to everyone hating on people for "not being able to take a joke", when admin-chan originally posted these descriptions in the thread it was really funny, but by taking that and then bringing that into a movement which I believe she is serious about, despite her joking around, blurs the line between "joke" and "serious".
Obviously we're not trying to start a movement which is on par with Lolita or whatever, but we are trying to start a laid back fashion where joking around is allowed, but it's ultimately not a joke. Since that's how we've approached it so far, jokes that are so directly about depression aren't quite appropriate.

I get the whole 4chan "don't be so sensitive" attitude, but on the contrary I think that hikikei is the perfect environment for the sensitive person. It's all about surrounding yourself with things you love and shutting out what anyone else says about it, in fact not even giving the outside world an opportunity to comment, so why shouldn't we be so sensitive? Plus while it's good to try and become more resilient to mean comments, I think sensitivity to other people is still a good trait in any hobby. Even if you're not personally offended by someone's comments, understand why some people could be, and in the case of admin-chan's depression kei descriptions, it's not so hard to understand.

Finally I don't think any of us should be afraid to be absolute weebs, since this is pajama style and so no one else has to approve.

Also although hikikei is based on the word hikikomori, I think that the style shouldn't be so central on literally being agoraphobic. Instead perhaps the light version of the word "shut-in", or just someone who enjoys being alone in their room.
"Make Believe Monday" implies that if you subscribe to hikikei, you never go outside, which is not what I want for this style.
Instead it could be "All Made Up Monday" or something like that where you get super dressed up whether you're going outside or not. It could even be a challenge day to push true shut ins to make plans with someone or generally leave the house when they wouldn't normally.

ok one more thing, I changed it from depression hikikei to gloomy hikikei (I think this sounds better anyway) and deleted bipolar hikikei alltogether, since although it was a funny joke when we were talking about depression kei, it's not really a useful subcategory in the first place.

Also I just want to put it out there, everyone is totally welcome to contribute to the wiki.

Oh! It appears that we are on the same page. In that case just a reminder that your blog description still says depression hikikei rather than gloomy hikikei. I won't judge you if you don't want to change it, but it sounds to me like you also like gloomy better, so I'm reminding you.

Why can't it just be hikikei and include all the substyles? Why does it have to be something plus hikikei? That's so confusing and kind of lame, tbh. We're too lazy to dress ourselves, why do we need to categorize what we're wearing?

>> No.7806936

>>7805830
Can someone post a full link to the facebook page? I want to put it on the wiki, but I don't want to risk linking my facebook account to anything 4chan related... haha.

>>7806933
I personally prefer straight hikikei, and that's what I'll be using, but if other people want to use substyles I don't want to limit them.
After all hikikei isn't meant to be about laziness, but about the joy of being in your own room, without a care of what others think of you.

I drew up a design for homura inspired pajamas. T-shirt dress (with glow in the dark soul gem design), pajama leggings, and a quilted robe. The bow at the bottom of the robe is the zipper pull. I love the idea of pajama "cosplay", since it allows you to cosplay every night without anyone judging you for it.

I'm also voting for gloomy kei. Although I don't mind the name depressive kei, I just think gloomy sounds a bit cuter as well as the general public not thinking its completely offensive.
