So I wanna cosplay Nasus from League of Legends (not sure yet whether I'm gonna do the splash art version or the in-game version, probably in-game since it's less complex, but I'll see how things go when I'm making it), but I've never made armor before, so I'm really not sure where to start. I guess specifically, I'm not sure what material to use for the chest plate; a lot of the tutorials I've looked at were just for small armor pieces like pauldrons or wristguards, so I dunno if anything would be different for a larger piece. I assume craft foam would be the easiest for a beginner to use? And I'm not sure how I should section it either? Should I try and do one giant piece for the chest plate, or do a front piece and a back piece and attach them or something?

Also, I some advice on how to do the sash would be appreciated too.

Thanks for any help

I'm making Sugar from One Piece for my friend's first cosplay this summer. I haven't really seen any good attempts at her before, so I'm not sure how to make some of her pieces.

Does anyone have advice on the eye piece and feather cape? I'm thinking of getting some cheap ass glasses, sawing off the left eye piece and removing the hinge, spray painting it, tinting the lens, and then... tying elastic to them somehow? The way it looks changes between animation, manga, and figure too (refs in pic).

I don't know, I'd really appreciate help, I've never done anything like the eye piece or feathered crap before. Top left is the fabric we got + the basic idea of what I want to do for the eye piece.

Your glasses idea sounds good, but I'd use spirit gum to attach it. The cape also looks like fuzzy fleece like from a bomber jacket, not feathers? Unless you're talking about something else in the design i'm not seeing.

Oh I covered it by accident, sorry. I honestly don't have any idea what the pink feather crap is on the figure.
I was going to use minky fabric for the capelet since it's so soft.

For the wig you'd probably have to stub the wig and then make your own wefts with the hair you cut off, which sounds hellish to me. You might be better off getting a stubbed wig, sewing in pink bang wefts, and then frankenstein-ing two ponytail clips together.

I wanted to start on Princess Hilda but I'm kind of at a loss for how to do the crown. Would Worbla and gesso work to give it that shiny look [followed by lots of withering and painting details]?

Also I've seen different variations of the circles inside the crown. I saw one person use gold/amber resin gems then the red one in the center and thought that looked pretty interesting to have all gems set in the crown.

Other than that, the detail on the front piece, I was considering painting it on or would that look sloppy?

Oh jeez, that looks pretty complicated. You could try hot gluing feathers to a foam base covered in fabric? I've seen some angel wing tutorials with that method.
Does this sound feasible?
>buy two wigs, and use one as a base
>put base wig in ponytail
>use wefts from second wig over the base wig to make it look pulled back
>use remaining wefts to thicken ponytail of base wig

>>7805088
Embroidery would be the best for the front piece, if you have the patience for it. The amber gems idea sounds interesting. Worbla wouldn't be my first choice for a crown. I'd actually look up some craft foam tutorials, they seem more suited for this. Kind of related, if you go that route you don't need to resin cast the gems, you can paint the back of glass pebbles with nail polish for the same effect at a much cheaper price.

I just recently finished my own princess Hilda, and I made the crown out of craft foam and resin cast gems. I think the overall look was nice, with cutting craft foam you can get nice clean lines while having a material that bends easily around your head.

As for the tabard, I hand painted mine because the purple fabric I had puckered like a motherfucker, so I knew that if I embroidered it, it would look awful.

Here's a handy reference I used while painting.

There isn't a name for that type of shirt, but the seams are called princess seams. A good fabric would be cotton twill, though you'll probably have to dye it that color especially if you want to match the socks. For the collar, you'll want some heavyweight iron on interfacing. I hope this was somewhat helpful!

I did a Hilda costume last year and am currently in the process of fixing/remaking a few pieces.

My first crown I made using a flexible polymer clay like Sculpey Bake n' Bend. The problem I had with it is that parts of it ended up breaking, so I had to reinforce the back with fabric/elastic and glue the broken pieces. It also really showed imperfections in your cutting, so I'm actually remaking it with craft foam right now.

Like the other anon said, I wouldn't recommend worbla for the crown. I'll let you know how my craft foam crown comes up (I'm doing the circles by glueing on round cabochons).

My tabard I originally made using iron-on transfers. They looked... okay, but I'm remaking it, since some of the designs came out crooked when I made them. I'm considering heat and bond, but the embroidery on those little wiggly pieces is going to be hell, so I might paint it.

It looks like an almost patched together knit piece. I kind of think of pic which was a (shitty) look from this season of PR. I hope the pictures are big enough.. I want to cosplay as Thranduil and I've been looking at so many fabrics these past few days, but I'd like to have a seagull's opinion.
I can order swatches for A & C, but not from fabric B as it's only available from ebay from a closed down bridal and costume shop. I have no info on what material fabric B is made out of though. For A & C the blend is roughly 50/50 cotton-polyester, however the shop which sells A & C says that these fabrics are mainly for pillows, sofas etc, home furnishings, and not for fashion or costumes. Fabric B, as I said earlier, is available on ebay for nearly half the store prize (if I'm to believe the seller, which doesn't have any negative feedback at all) The seller says in the description that the fabric is even more shiny in real life than in the shown pictures.
I think my favourite is A, but as I said, I'm not sure and I'd like to have a second opinion. English is not my native language, so apologies if this sounds a bit stiff.

I'm torn between A and B. I think B has a more accurate color, but if it's more shiny than in the picture that could be a problem. I'd probably recommend A if not for the fact the sellers said it was for home furnishings. I have used that kind of fabric for costumes though, so maybe you can ask A's seller how thick the fabric is? You can always add a thicker lining if it's really scratchy or something. (Your english is fine, by the way)

I'm in the planning of a male Elizabeth cosplay and can't figure out where I'm putting all of my blue and all of my white.

Top is going to be a white tux shirt using the bird brooch necklace thingy as a tie-ish thing, a silver vest, and a tailcoat. Bottom is going to be fitted slacks or tux pants and black riding boots.

I've got the disign down. That part was easy. But I need help figuring out where I want my blue and where I want my white. Mainly in the tailcoat and pants.

I'm thinking I got two main options:
>a partially white tailcoat, with blue on the upper chest and arms, white below the blue and on the sleeves. Blue pants, white cuffs
>a full blue tailcoat, white cuffs. White pants with blue cuffs
>a full blue tailcoat, white cuffs. Blue pants, white cuffs

anybody have imput?

I want to make a hoodie and I have no idea what I'm doing. I'm looking at this jersey knit fabric for the main piece:
and this 'ribbing and binding' knit fabric for the cuffs and bottom:

Would that work? I'm assuming the ribbing/binding knit is like what you see on the cuffs of sweatshirts and hoodies but in the picture it doesn't really look ribbed at all.
It also says that the fabric is tubular. Is this due to the way it is made? Can I really just cut it open and use it like I would woven fabric (keeping in mind the stretch factor, of course) or is there a trick to this?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqNzQeTAXwQ&list=PL95842D024B98C02C&index=1

General rule of thumb for fabric is to measure your waist and buy 2.5x that measurement of fabric.

>> No.7809215

>>7808990
I found that if you take your waist measurment and multiply it by 3 will get you the safest length of fabric, especially if you do thick pleats. I found 3 good tutorials just by searching google and deviantart.

As for color, I'm not familiar with character but I'd just take a photo or bring your phone to the fabric store and zoom in on your color and sit and compare with whats available, maybe look up other cosplayers and see what color they choose and what you like the most.

And buy extra for the collar since its the same color.

Is Cosplayfu a good place to get cosplays? Does anyone have any experience with them?

>> No.7809521

>>7809161
Yes, the ribbing/binding knit is the type used for cuffs and collars. Keep in mind that a rib knit is just a specific way of knitting the yarns of the fabric, so you can manufacture it with as thin or as thick threads and do it in as wide a rib or narrow as you like. When it's very fine and compact, you can't tell that it is a "rib fabric" until you stretch the fabric out and see the telltale "zig-zag" of the fabric.

Yes, knits are often knitted in a cylindrical format, and you just cut it flat and use it as normal.

>> No.7809523

>>7809161
Ribbing is optional, it only helps "suck in" the fabric evenly. I think the cuffs on here are just for show. It would look pretty awkward without them. But by tubular, I think it just means that it's bound on both sides, and you can just cut down the side to make it flat.
But basically, just trace another hoodie that you know fits well. If you're super careful, you can trace it onto paper and make sure everything lines up before cutting the fabric. And make sure to measure the neckline to match up with the bottom of the hood! If you want it to be more fitted/weirdly flared, you can always take in the sides after you're finished sewing.

Quick question. My costume requires copious amounts of clear liquid latex then some face paint to get the flesh tone. I found mehron has a flesh color already and was thinking that would cut down on some work but I'm worried the layers of liquid latex will alter the flesh tone of the final color, like multiple layers of grey will end up with a black color.

Should I stick with the clear and paint over it or does is liquid latex opaque enough that it's not going to be an issue?

(looking at mehron's stuff by the way, specifically their soft beige liquid latex)

Anyone here good with lighting? I want to start getting into using lighting in cosplay and I was thinking of making the millenium ring from yugioh because it seemed like a good idea to make a small prop for my first project. My idea was to make only the “ring” part light up by putting either a 5mm LED light strip or el wire into a plastic tube (reinforcing it with wire to keep the shape) and hiding the battery pack behind the triangle part. Then I’d paint over it with paint that is sheer enough to have the light still shine through. Would this work at all? I've already tried a 14.4 mm, and I believe they were too big, so I was thinking of just ordering some 14.0 mm. I'll just be wearing them for 4-6 hours at most. Ugh this artwork actually shows a two-layer kimono with a short skirt, not even a yukata. Seriously, I swear, Japanese weebs seem to mess up their own country's traditional garb more often than not, it's like the weeb version of having dudebro design bras for women.

Anyway, to the construction. There's a whole bunch of different ways to approach this, up to and including making/buying a full length yukata and then folding it to knee length, and then wearing the skirt over it, or there are actual instructions for a wa-loli set in one of the older gosuroris, it has patterns for a set of yukata top, poofy short skirt and long skirt (to simulate a full yukata).

You can indeed use 14-inch yukata bolt and yukata instructions to make just the top half; cut the yukata off at the hips (not the waist), fold it under to make a fake ohashori, then add waist ties. This way you can tie it firmly around your waist instead of fiddling with koshihimo.
Take a look at this child's yukata: http://www.immortalgeisha.com/ig_bb/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=15202
Look at Part 8 and 9, where the fake ohashori and the waist ties are sewn. Make sure you sew the waist ties higher up, it's okay if it ends up near the underbust, if it ends up around the hips area your yukata top is likely to gape as you cannot tie it tightly enough.

As for the white fabric showing underneath her collar and sleeves, that's a second kimono layer. If you're using actual yukata fabric or one of the gauze fabrics (ro or sha), you will need an underlayer anyway, just construct it the same was as the outer yukata top. If you don't want to add another layer, you can sew a rectangle of fabric to the sleeve opening of the sleeve instead, and make a fake collar (a "kantan eri"), it's just a rectangle of white fabric folded in half and sewn only to the back of the kimono collar. The pressure from the front cross tie keeps it in place, but you can add snaps if you find it doesn't stay in place very well.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but you need to be more concerned about the base curve (and prescription, if you need one) than the diameter of the lens. The 14.4mm measurement is just how large the contact is, which you can determine how big you want depending on what look you're going for, but the base curve is what you need to know for how it's going to sit on your eye.

I ordered my first pair of contacts without seeing an eye doctor but then thought better of sticking random shit from China into my eyes and went to see one. Luckily, my base curve matched the lenses I'd ordered, and now I know for future purchases.

A friend of mine bought a pair, refused to see an eye doctor even after I pestered her about it repeatedly, and wore them for an afternoon (about 6 hours). For most of the next day, she had trouble seeing and was genuinely scared she'd partially blinded herself. She's okay, but took the lenses to a doctor, and he told her the curve of the lenses was far too tight for her eyes.

tl;dr go see a damn doctor before you stick shit in your eyes if you don't know what you're doing.

Not getting them fitted is like playing Russian Roulette on a very sensitive organ of your body. Most people have a certain BC, that means base curve or the curve of the contact lenses, but that does not mean you will have the same. The BC being too tight or too loose can cause health complications.

DIA, or diameter, is another issue entirely. Simply put, the bigger the DIA, the more uncomfortable the lenses are (although water content and material also factor into comfort). Larger contacts prevent your eyes from 'breathing' normally. You shouldn't wear them for too long, or to sleep.

> TLDR; Get it fitted and if anything hurts, take that shit out ASAP

>> No.7816473

yes, but it won't look like box pleats do on a rectangle skirt - they'll be wider at the bottom. You need to make the 'waist' bit 3X the waistband, the pleating maths is the same.

I was seriously going to ignore the advice of acryllic and school glue but I took it to a seamstress to get it fitted better and she said to use acrylic, that fabric paint was crap.
I'm a really good painter. I can tighten up the edges by like 1000% but I'm just having trouble getting the paint to be nice and thick and even.

Also I painted this while it was on my body

What.
Acrylic isn't flexible and will crack like a bitch. Use fabric paint and water, like the other anon said. Painting it while wearing it was a good idea, though, so good job on that part.

That suit isn't salvageable, unfortunately. See if you can get a new one, outline the shapes in pencil, and you'll need a friend to help you with the back.

Excuse me for saying for you to PEEL off the paint then try to bleach the residue. I've never been stupid enough to use acrylic paint on fabric in such an excess, I've only ever used fabric dyes for details after carefully penciling the design on the fabric.

Just toss that bodysuit and buy a pre-made one from China and tailor it to fit your body better.

I was thinking having the 2 facing sides made out of cardboard, make some pillars inside for stability, and then getting some bristol board to finish the sides since it's softer.
But that's going to create some ugly corners with tape.

Any suggestions?

I made Sugar before the her color scheme came from the manga, all I had to go on was the anime, so her cape (which was depicted as light brown in the show) is very different.
Another problem was the feathers as again, at the time the feather aspect was also lacking color, but not to mention that the design seen in the manga looked nothing like feathers...

You should be able to use tacky glue on the bristol paper (just don't oversaturate it). You're going to have to be really precise with your cuts otherwise it's gonna look shitty.

Also foamcore might be better for you than cardboard, if you cut it well. You can line up the cut edge to be flush with the sides. Bristol also looks nicer on top of neatly cut foamcore.
Idk how you're going to do the curves though, cardboard and foamcore are going to be shitty with curves.

Cosplaying Maya from BL2.
Looking for some opinions on fabric choice.
Pic related.
For the yellow areas I'm planning on painting 1mm craft foam ( yellow in pic is just a general colour reference NOT final colour).
I'm going to make a grey spandex bodysuit, covered with either black mesh, real black leather, craft foam armour and the silver areas I'm unsure about.
I found 2 different fabrics that could work, the top one is more metallic and shiny, a darker steel grey base, while the bottom one has much more of a blue base IRL.
Opinions on which colours and fabrics look better together?

Bottom 5 fabric looks closer to hers, the pattern on the top doesn't really make sense for how smooth Maya's is even though the shine is nicer.
The yellow areas on her don't look like armor to me. The foam will have crease lines from use and not be as form fitting as her outfit is.

You should probably just use yellow spandex for it and then try to airbrush the contour spots. You could even consider lining it and sandwiching thin quilter's batting in to get it raised slightly on her shoulder/collar or something.

I'm planning on cosplaying Tim Sale's version of Scarecrow from Batman.

I already have the boots available. I think I'm going to make his post out of styrofoam I have at my disposal, so it will be lightweight, and I'll spraypaint it or something, unless some real wood seems like a better option? I'm scared of being too restricted. I've been told to use canvas for his outfit since the traditional burlap is itchy.

I have a tutorial for the hat (though it will not let me link it even with spaces and junk; a shame because I'd really like to share it with you guys because it's a good resource imo).

I was thinking of getting a wig cap, and gluing the straw "hair" onto it in rows much like a wig. Is this even a conceivable idea? I'm just unsure of how to practically go about this. I don't think attaching it directly to his mask would be a good idea because it would make it harder to pull on the mask; I feel like I'd lose more straw over time that way. I also want to store it separately in a box/etc to keep the straw from messing up.

Anyone have critiques of the methods? Tips or tricks?

I might end up commissioning someone in my area to sew the main torso area of the outfit properly once I have the materials because I'm honestly more concerned with my cosplay staying together than being able to take credit for it all myself. This would honestly be one of the first cosplays I've done that is requiring this much homemade work (also why I chose such a raggedy ass character for it).

I wanted to make a Lissandra cosplay recently but decided against it since it was going to be too expensive.

The conclusion I came to about her helmet was that the top and visor over her eyes would need to be made out of some kind of semi see through black acrylic (like for motorcycle helmets). The top of her helm has a glowing pattern that radiates outward. This could be achieved with LEDs under the acrylic that are programmed using Arduino. Similar in concept to Volpin's Guy Manuel helmet:
http://www.volpinprops.com/portfolio/daft-punk-helmet-guy/

Glowing pattern:
http://youtu.be/xsCp5lBceTA?t=53s

The sides of her helmet by the neck would need to be made out of some kind of flexible material so that you could move your head. Wonderflex is rigid but can flex if you wanted to use something like that. Another option would be EVA foam treated with Plastidip.

I was going to make her shoulders out of fiberglass but Worbla would probably work well too. You would need to create an object in the shape of her shoulder to mold around for most methods.

Over all the costume excluding her ice shards is deceptively simple. I guess if you wanted to skip the whole glowing pattern it would be easier.

Hey all.
I plan on making a Scarlet Spidey suit pretty soon, but I am not too sure on how to make certain parts of it.

On the bracelet are these cylinder things...how would I make them, glue them onto a band and have them stick together? Pretty stumped.

Also on his leg you can notice a leather utility pouch, are those easy to find?

Thanks

Hey, anon! Good news! I know Tim Sale! He also helped me with my movie version cosplay of Scarecrow (asked for tips on the mask), so I'll add a bit of my own tidbits.

Asked him a few of the questions that are obviously more from an artist's point than your actual construction questions.

He said black absolutely for the clothes. Straw isn't attached to the mask, so you're in luck. It is attached to the hat, however. Also, he approves as canvas as a substitute for the whole outfit.

He also linked me this:

This one's my suggestion! For the mask, I did use burlap since it was cheap and I was doing a last minute cosplay I didn't want to work too hard on. I didn't cut a hole for the mouth, but instead spoke through the mask. It was hard and it was hot, but that way I didn't get it in my mouth. For the eye holes, I actually wore glasses underneath even though I didn't need them to keep it out of my eyes. With those in mind, it wasn't that bad. Just hot.

aHHHHH that is the best reply I could have gotten wow thank you. That link is super great for a reference too. That's really fuckin sweet of both of you to take that time for me, and I appreciate it so much. It's also SOOO nice for him to confirm the fucking blacks and give the Romney Marsh reference link to confirm the mask as white with black because I've been so annoyed by the varying colors (I have the Dark Victory Salecrow figure, and I have to wonder if it annoys him how it was designed because it annoys even ME; the redeeming factor for it is that I can spin the head 360 degrees by twirling his hat, and it's really amusing).

I'll probably still use canvas for the mask if I can because I live in Florida, and I'll need any holes in it that I can get away with. I'd also hate to be itchy on top of being hot as frick, but I'll probably decide when I'm actually out getting the fabrics.

I also was recently told by a friend that a really good way to get the straw that is already cheap + somewhat put together already is with a hula skirt. Which, if done correctly, I'm hoping to pull off.

What does the tag say about the fabric content? Dyeing something darker like that is pretty easy.

Odds are they're 100% cotton (or maybe something like 98% with some spandex), so normal RIT should be fine. Be sure to add salt and read the instructions. I prefer bucket or stovetop method, washing mashine is hit and miss.

Odds are your hoodie was a poly cotton blend, so the dye you used took to the cotton fibers and not the polyester.

TL;DR Read the fucking label

I know a little bit of italian. He says his material list is:
Colored plastic bottle, carta igienica fatto a pezzi (toilet... paper pieces?? It looks like plaster cloth), Newspaper pieces, posterboard/chipboard, colla vinilica (vinyl glue is the direct translation, it looks like craft glue to me though), acrylic paint, paintbrush, una giunzione a due per gli occhi (two joints/connections for the eyes. Look at PVC stuff maybe), felt-tip marker, balloon, ???, measuring tape. He also used UHU glue and bandages which he didn't list. I included the italian for the weird words so you can google them.

His general process plaster cloth over the paper mache to strengthen it. He painted/added details after it dried for a day or two. I would go over the mask with some kind of filler (maybe bondo?) before you paint so you can sand it smooth, his looks very bumpy/unfinished. Also don't forget to add padding/foam to the back so it doesn't hurt your face when you wear it for a long period of time. Good luck, sorry this post is so long.

I'd like to do One-punchMan as I am bald as shit and shave my head regularly so I have that part of the cosplay down, but I have never really made a costume before, nor do I have much sewing experience.

How should I go about making his outfit, and if it would be too hard where should I attempt to commission it? I have until Halloween as that's when Youmacon is, but if I can't have it done by then I wouldn't be worried too much and just save it for ACEN.
