So what is /cgl/'s opinion on fursuits?

>> No.7800665

>>7800659
There are anthros I'd like to cosplay, but I would rather use body paint and go gijinka for it as opposed to a fursuit. The tails will be the hardest part, sadly.

Not a fan of fursuits, though.

Realistic ones are goat. The ones that follow more animegao aesthetic are cute. Other than that... just no.

I do appreciate the effort put into them regardless.

These are fun. I think the community seems ot be moving away from the bug-eyed heads and have some interesting designs. Also kudos on being able to wear those without passing out, that's a skillset on its own preparing cooling vests, head vents and the like.

>> No.7800730

I've found from past experience (my RHPS group performed at Furry Fiesta) that the individuals with handmade, nice fursuits are generally polite and fairly well behaved. They spent their time and money making something and they aren't going to ruin it doing stupid shit.

I have mad respect for people who can make beautiful fursuits.

>> No.7800731

What's up with all these stupid "what does cgl think of _____" threads? You know the answers is majority of people thinking you are a disgusting furries, one person saying furries isn't about sex abloobloo, and a few saying as long as well made/cute it's ok (and post examples of the bunny lolita/ cyclops).

>> No.7800734

I actually build fursuits as my full-time job.

>nobody would suspect that a nice, down-to-earth lolita is a disgusting furry-fraternizer
>kek
Of course, I NEVER mix hobbies.
That'd be shit.

But seriously, furries are weird, but the costumes are what keep me tied to the community.
I don't know, I've just always had stuffed animals as a kid, and it just makes me happy to see people who want a suit be so happy when I make it.

I do toony style, but I ADORE realistic suits.
I used to find furries and their suits in general skeezy as hell, but then I found "Clockwork Creature" and I was hooked.

I think I can appreciate a really well constructed one. I like the more realistic ones and some of the Japanese ones(like that bunny I believe was in a thread not that long ago.) That would be fleece. However, I would strongly suggest NOT doing the whole suit in fleece. Unless you're doing padding underneath and you REALLY know what you're doing, odds are it will probably turn out like pic related.

However, parts of the face can be fleece and look good.
I'd suggest antron fleece, if you want to use good stuff.

>>7800917

Most of the time, that's actually padding to give the suit the illusion of digitigrade animal legs.

>> No.7801031

>>7800751
I don't mind.

>How much does that pay?
I can sell a fairly basic-colored fullsuit for over 1k, which, yes, is cheap.

>Are you actually good at it?
I'm not shit-tier, but I'm certainly not near god-tier. I think mine are average. They aren't in "uncanny valley" territory, so that's good!
I'm still finding my style, though, so I'm making some serious upgrades.

>How much do you sell them for?
Heads cost around 500$ and it goes up from there. Suits with padded legs usually cost about an average of 1400$ from me,

>how long does it take to make one?
It seriously depends. I have a shit schedule.

>what's the profit margin?
The startup is pretty costly, and you need quite of bit of material.
In the end, buying in bulk and having most basic things [I don't have an airbrush or can't do LEDs yet, boo..] make it all worthwhile.

Honestly, I'd rather not say a profit margin, but if you want to pull in a GOOD profit margin and pay self-employment tax on all of it, you're going to have to charge more than I do.
That's all I can say.

Sorry I'm being so vague, I'm just tired.

Anyone else is free to ask questions, if they have any!
I can't give away all my techniques and shit, though, so please understand.

Any tips/patterns on making tails? I've seen some tails with realistic fur that look like they're one solid piece.

I know you're supposed to make sure you cut the fur patterns in the right direction or something like that and to stitch them in several small parts rather than just make a tube with a wire set into it.

Anything I'm missing?

LEDs are actually really easy to wire. I was thinking of just wiring up some basic battery/LED stuff and selling them to furries, but I never got around to it. Even found a way to make solid glowing tails with no hotspots, but raw materials alone would cost me something like 30-40 bucks a tail and four hours to make. I assume I'd only get like 80 back.

Then again, it seems really shitty glowing tails are selling for 80...

>>7801044
Uggghh, I know.
The furry community is constantly pissing itself about how fursuits are FAR too expensive, though. No amount of explaining can make them feel anything over 100$ is fair. It's frustrating.
Unless you're a big-name maker, you usually can't get away with charging higher prices that bring you a fair amount of profit for your time.
>I should stop being a doormat, though

>>7801079
Have a shitty MS Paint diagram, anon!

It's time-consuming as hell, but to hide seams, I actually hand-sew most [if not all] of my stuff. It keeps the pile of the fur from being sewn in and leaving gaps in the pile when it's turned right-side out.
The tail picture would have be 7 separate pieces on one side, all with the fur in their corresponding directions. Mirror it for the other side, and sew both sides together.
Boom! Tail!

Shit, if I could find someone to sell me pre-wired LEDs and maybe program servos, I'd pay whatever it'd take.
I want to make blinking eyes, sound-reactive LEDs, color-changing LEDs, moving ears and brows, and all that.

Sorry, I'm just passionate as hell about suits and making them better.

>> No.7801123

>>7801119
I should add, you can simplify it a bit, but I like to go all out with so many pieces because I like destroying my soul without mercy.

>> No.7801150

>>7801119
Blinking/fading is easy enough to make analog. You really don't need to program that. If all you want is slow/fade fade RGB LEDs, they come preprogrammed. Otherwise, all it takes is a bit of hacking to get the right range of colors you want. Sound reactive is a bit more, yeah. I've seen places like Dream Visions take literally a battery pack, 10 LEDs, and some wires and call that 40 bucks. Considering they only do solid colors, I am honestly thinking of undercutting them and selling simple finger rigs and fading/blinking eyes for 20 a pair.

Necomimi is the only really good self-moving ear thing I found. Pretty cheap, too.

Thanks for the diagram, by the way!

American fursuiters don't even seem to try to make the heads or eyes look appealing, 90% of the time. They would rather be faithful to drawn art of the character's eyes/head shape, even when it ends up looking pretty ugly irl.

Strongly agreeing with >>7802530.
Look, I love my job and making the suits, but, if I can be honest, the majority of the community is full of drama-mongering, hivemind autists who get mad at EVERYTHING.
If you don't see it right away, it will eventually be revealed to you in time if you choose to hang out and participate in the community.

There are some good people, but it's not worth wading into the waist-high shitpool that is the furry fandom to find any decent people.

People within the fandom usually strongly deny anything bad happening within, but, if they're really honest, TRULY honest, they would tell you that most people are completely bonkers.

Sorry, not sorry.. you know?

holy shit, I feel you, anon.

My SO used to tease me all the time about how I was a furry or wanted to be, and it drove me nuts.
Then he realized how mad I get selling to furries and he shut right up.

Starting up is NEVER impossible!
Do a couple test projects and see how they turn out. If they turn out decent, try to sell them off and make a little money back! But DON'T expect your first, like, 5, to turn out well enough to reflect your skill level.
Heck, I've been building for almost 3 years now and I'm STILL not getting shit right.
I still haven't found my ideal "style" yet, so it is frustrating.

But, hey! You may have a better time that I will!
I tried to start up with realistic-style resin stuff right off the bat, and THAT was a trainwreck. Found out that I'm allergic to something in whatever, I went and fucked up one of my hands because I was retarded and didn't do safety, etc. etc.

Ask yourself some basic questions:
Toony, realistic, or somewhere in between?
More natural or wild colors?
What "style" will I use?

Hope this helps a bit.

I know, anon. I know.

I've kind of gotten over it. I act normal enough, and I don't interact with the furry community more than I need to.
I actually got shit for wearing a cosplay-based suit [Pokemon] at a con. People were scoffing at me and making weird comments, despite how nice I thought the suit looked/was.

Then they saw me at my dealers table and were surprised to find that the freak in the fursuit was a cute, normal girl.
People were like, "Wait... was that you in the suit??" and I would laugh and just talk about how I liked Pokemon and costumes and shit.
The lady selling in the booth across from us was actually scoffing at how gross it was that someone [didn't know it was me, but we had conversed in the previous days as neighbors] was wearing a fursuit. Then she saw how absolutely ecstatic I made this little girl, and when I changed, she saw it was me and brought over fudge to the table and apologized for being so rude.
>inb4 THAT happened
Sounds like some made-up, namby-pamby bullshit, but it's for real.

I can't do any pictures (mobile), but...

Realistic-
The vision. You see primarily out of tear ducts.
More detail to the fur for a more "real" look
Built on resin heads most of the time.
It all looks realistic in general, especially how it's built. A lot of realistic ones use taxidermy based items and techniques, others like to just give it a more realistic look.

Cartoony-
Tend to have a more base fur look than a realistic one.
Usually built on foam to give more expression.
Vision usually through the pupil or whole eye depending on the eye style.
Usually more stylized in expression (dead eye is common still).
---
One of my favorite cartoony-style makers is MoreFurLess (ironic considering they're still a wee bit pricy. Not as bad as some big name makers though).

I'm not at the level where I'm making a living off of fursuits, but I am trying my darned hardest to get there. The furry community is a haven for autists and perverted wackjobs, but professional fursuit makers are usually pretty sane. The worst that can be said about some of them is that they're elitist or catty, but you've got to at least be somewhat mentally stable in order to turn it into a business.

The kemono style is very rarely emulated by western makers. Their mouths are very small, the eyes are set lower and have clear plastic over top of them. This means that breathing is difficult and the eyes are hard to see out of and can fog up. Western fursuit makers strive for comfort, which requires higher set eyes and smiley, open mouths.

If you ever have questions about mascot making, the fursuit livejournal is a good place to scroll through. Hell, make an account, ask some questions.

It's all sewn faux fur, dude. Usually patterned similarly to a mechanic's coveralls with a zipper in the front center, or off to the side. (Rear zippers are a pain in the ass to deal with and are a safety concern. Unzip your front and cool air goes immediately to your chest.) Heavily padded suits have pockets sewn inside of the bodysuits that accommodate carved foam pieces or stuffed polyfill pillows, depending on the maker's preference.

I can try? Again, I'm not a maker so none of this is really from experience, just from talking to some makers and reading stuff.
We'll start with the, well, most important part in /my/ opinion, the head. The head is usually the eye catching part.
The most common material used is (beginners usually start with this) is foam. Why foam? Foam can be carved and manipulated into the shapes one desire for the fursuit. Some makers sell foam bases in case you can't make them yourself.
Almost ALL makers use faux fur (the two common types are short pile and long pile. Using real fur is considered a Faux pas) for it. Typically beginners use hot glue, but I CANNOT recommend this method.

This chick's little tutorial area on her site is actually fantastic; it also has photos and videos to go with it. It can tell you more than I can. This is just her style though.

I'm working up to starting my first fursuit project, but I'm still unsure on so many things. I'm not really a furry, I just think the suits are really cool and it seems like a fun, challenging project. My only problems are I want a really specific color fur, so I guess I'm going to have to airbrush white fur, and I'm not sure how to go about eyes.

I can't really go with anyone's side on this one, though. The red one is blatantly copied [I even found art that was commissioned for them and it matched Loki exactly].
Laki, the blue, one, I don't know...
The maker of a kinda' similar-looking suit supposedly said that they got permission and/or talked to Laki and Loki's maker who said it was fine.

In the end, I still don't care. A concept is just that: a concept.

I figure the appeal is more, they like the design of a particular one and are purchasing character rights. Now why anyone would want to drop $50+ or even $200 on one is beyond me, but that's still a neat concept.

On the other hand, a lot of the time the artist will sell a "custom" one, and people really ARE paying to color in a blank one themselves, which is pretty stupid.

> She bails on every cosplay plan except one by a month before the con claiming she doesn't have the time or money. I'm annoyed but okay. I can wear most of them solo except one.
> I save the last cosplay plan by telling her I'd make it/finance it if she'd wear it. It was super simple and I'd already made mine and didn't want mine to go to waste.
> Two weeks before the con she suddenly spends hundreds of dollars on fur and foam and makes a new fursuit
> ... Wtf bitch
> Whatever. Just going to get through the con with our one remaining cosplay plan and get to wear the costume I'd worked hard on.
> She brings the fursuit (not even a full fursuit. A half suit that makes it look like a weird blue wolf head is popping out of a tiny human body) and announces that we have to be her "handlers" for the duration of the con. "All fursuits have handlers to lead them around and take care of them!"
> I so did not sign up for this shit. I don't even want to be associated with someone in such an embarrassing fursuit let alone babysit them the entire con.
> She wants us to walk her everywhere because she can't see well in the suit. "I need to go back to my room." "Okay, go." "No, you have to take me because I can't see."
> "Take off the head." "THAT WOULD RUIN THE MAGIC!!!!"
> Friend agrees to walk in front of her to basically designate a clear path but draws the line at leading her around like an animal

To be fair, my first experience with furries was middle school, where these 2 guys wore collars. I didn't even realize they were furries until I re-met them in high school.
Both were massive perverts, one proclaiming how I was so cute and how he wanted his Yu-Gi-Oh Baby Dragon to rape me.
The second was a Tripp-pants-wearing creep who constantly groped girl, tried to act cute about it, and was "oh so random lol".
Both ugly with ugly personalities.

I re-met them junior year in high school.
Both had come out as gay. One constantly shoved furry porn in people's faces at random, and the other legitimately bragged about fucking dogs.

I wish I was making this up.

Never met a person outside of a con who owned or wore a fursuit, though.

On topic, I still like fursuits.
I think it's because I liked animals and stuffed animals of all kinds as a kid, and I don't think I ever grew out of it.
Fursuits just remind me of cute stuffed animals, so I don't mind them too much if they're well-made and not nightmare-fuel tier.

I openly hate furries. Maybe I can help you.

Humanoids like Fae are less bad depending on how you do it, avoid all judgement by framing it around a faun character you like as a cosplay for that double whammy of nonjudgmental thinking.

It's the fursuit assholes that are their own special characters that I really hate. When you run around being obnoxious, letting children pet you, you should be put down for the betterment of society.
If you use the term 'mate' to describe your partner, it's a fetish and you're shoving your bedroom bullshit into people's faces in the worst possible way.
Also, if you suit at a concert/rave/other venue like it, you are the HUGEST DOUCHE, because you smell and are pressing your ginormous ass into prime real estate. You forget that it adds to your height which blocks people's view when you're in the thick of things. I hate you and everything that you stand for.

Most furries I have met have given me a lasting impression that the entire fandom should play the most dangerous game and be wiped out in a hail of bullets.

No anon, you have it wrong. Cons aren't the parade ground for fetishes either my friend. They should keep it in the bedroom or amongst their own, like any adult should conduct themselves, having a mask doesn't make you blameless. There are plenty of outlets for their fetishes, and openly displaying it and shoving it down other's throats at a public space, where it's not the highlight, is childish and disgusting.
