Hi /cgl/ I'm planning on making a post apocalyptic raider cosplay, something like pic related, currently I've got a gas mask, helmet, old military jacket/fire men's jacket, and old military boots, I was hoping to make some armor plates but I'm not too sure how I should get that done, and I was also hoping to make more miscellaneous things like bandoliers and other stuff, just hope someone could give me a few pointers, it's my first cosplay

if you don't want to stick with that picture too much then you can make armor out of used tires and stuff like that (although cutting it will be a little tricky but doable with the right tools)
and don't forget to make it dirty, that's a very important part.

I was also thinking of make my own gas mask using the goggles on the helmet, and making a more of a breathing mask like on your pic with an extra large filter with like a small Pringles can or something

Figure I aught to have some knowledge that'll be useful. Most old style ALICE backpacks with have a pair of straps for hanging a sleeping bag from. This looks and works better than trying to wedge it (or anything, for that matter) under the top flap of a back pack, especially if not full. if you invest in one of the bags with a metal frame (also advisable) I'd high recommend try to find a cargo shelf, a small attachment that allows you to attach different items such as ammo cans that aren't typically meant to be attached to the frame. A vietnam style poncho and liner is a cheap alternative to a sleeping system, and is both good for looks and actually not a half bad sleeping bag. Mixing old and new style equipment will make it look like you actaully had been scavenging, (ALICE + MOLLE, if you find the snap/velcro stuff, it looks nice but is utterly worthless as a modular system, though makes a good base if you can find the main vest,) if you try making armor, you can find cheap metal from scrapyards, but I'd highly recommend you have a Skilsaw and a large hammer, along with something to use as a rounded anvil. You can make some cheap semi-decent weapons out of EVA flooring foam (~$25 for 4x4 at Lowe's), maxing civilian clothes with military looks good, too. Try sticking to military colors if at all possible, unless you're going for a blood raider look, in which case reds and blues do the trick, and old sports equipment makes pretty good looking riot pading with a layer of black spraypaint. Oh, and rothco may sell plastic PASGT helmets for $35, but they're also $50 at your local surplus store and can be fitting with an adjustable visor that looks nice, and don't pay more than $100 for a used gas mask, and no more than $40 for one of those isreali pieces, and no more than $20 for any mask made before 1980.

As for the backpack, I've already got a small medic satchel that I was planning on using. For the armor, I've seen a lot guys come through my work with motorcycle padding which if I can get cheap I can cut it down to individual parts, plus I've got a friend whose a blacksmith and he can probably help me with some metal plating. My one problem is making my stuff look really worn and busted up, any tips for that?

>> No.7801465

>>7801361
Leather can be hit with some steel wool, albiet lightly. Metal can actually be damaged, for instance by taking it to a gun range, slashing at with with a knife, or striking it with a hammer or other blunt object. rubbing a bi of clear boot polish into woven fabrics will make it look matted and worn for long periods without changing. Krylon works good for keeping metals from looking too shiny, and if done before wearing them out, can make the damage more obvious, and if done again after can make it seem like you're constantly patching it.

>> No.7801473

>>7800954
Oh, before I forget, what I was trying to say with the PASGTs was that the real ones go for $50, and the fake ones don't take the riot visor.

Oh, and I'm serious about that gas mask. If you're just in tactical gear and wearing an M40, people just automatically assume you're in a Metro cosplay.
