I want to build this for a larp but change it to be more fantasy. I will post another pic like it, because I want to do a fantasy version on it. I have no idea how to accomplish this as I am not very knowledgeable at this kind of stuff. So any help will be grateful.

I fucking hope you don't talk about the larpshop armours. Because while they are expensive they are objectively shit tier.
It's not about being custom made for you it's about not being comfortable at all and the patterns are all wrong. even those were for the right size for someone the patterns they use guarantee that it will never be comfortable or work well. Combine that with thin as fuck materials that will bend even during transportation and the fact they are so expensive that you can get an actual blacksmith made armor for it most of the time.

That said, actually a lot of people like those for some reason I cannot understand. Probably it's because they just have to throw some cash at the shop and they instantly get something that resembles an armor from far away.

but ranting off.

I already said that thinner/less dense, linen/canvas like materials could work but now I realized that using a cheap us fuck material for most layers and putting just one good looking layer at the end of it could work too, although I still recommend to use as little synthetic materials as you could because it's way more practical if you run around in it, especially in a hot day.
We already realized on cons that when someone is dressed properly in armor it's waaaay more comfortable than for example for the guys who in full foam crafted costumes. Or just in some complicated cloth made out of synthetics and cannot stop sweating

Any link so somebody uin europa that makes custom plate armour with correct materials and patterns and does not cost a fortune? I have made a lot of stuff myself, including dozens of knives, pattern welded, bowmaking, hardened leather, ... ad nauseam.

But due to a new job I wont have the time to once again go full retard about a new costume for later medieval and Landsknecht inspired partial plate armour. So I look for a place where I can get good stuff like a breastplate and articulated shoulder/upper arm armour.

well, I don't have links as most of the blacksmiths who do it cheap are usually the ones who don't have a website.
Although our blacksmith do mostly Landsknecht stuff as we have a Landsknecht reenactment, so he might be good for you, although has a few orders now and I don't know when will he have time for new ones.

I am form Germany.

Do not misunderstand me - I do not look for extremely cheap stuff. If it fits me well and has "function" instead of only looks, I will gladly pay more. I do not need the stuff immediately. Some connections and pics of what these people do would be very cool.

What I get here is "one size fits none" or outright fantasy stuff that is impractical. Additionally, it is just bent sheet metal instead of hammered to shape (with the corresponding variances in thickness depending on location and work hardening) carbon steel.
I will of course pay more for authentic craftsmanship, material and true value as armour.

also if I'm already posting landsknechts there is something important to know about them:
There is two, absolutely necessary things that a Landsknecht must have.
1. some kind of head-wear, like a hat or helmet or something. Must be fabulous too.
2. a mug

Everything else is optional.
Or as the saying goes: War is not a reason to wear pants.
... although the provost might disagree sometimes

7779575

and another important thing. The stuff I posted so far are kind of authentic landsknechts with a lot of warhammer fantasy version mixed in.
But even the authentic ones are somewhere around middle 16th century ones. When the landsknechte became a thing at first they didn't had so much fabulous cloths, the clothing "evolved" through the years. Also they didn't had the Holy Roman Emperors decree either that they are an exception from every clothing law ever.

On pic: kind of late 15th century landsknechts

Take this all with a grain of salt as I am still fairly new to the SCA.

Kings and Queens set the tone of the "game" for their kingdom. So they could decide that every event should have dancing, or that there will be 5 yule events this year etc. that's what will happen. That said they are restricted by the SCA bylaws and local laws, and members can vote with their feet if the royalty is being too overbearing.

Other then setting the tone they give out awards and add circumstance and pomp to events.

Like I said, pinch of salt. Gropey or any other more long standing member probably would be better at explaining.

Mostly because cheap and "good enough".
Blacksmiths are not a common thing in western Europe (and therefore, Always expensive), and people feel a great deal of mistrust towards ordering from eastern Europe.

As for myself, I have a great deal of mistrust towards the idea of "custom made to size", without actually having physically been there.

there was a dude who had greek garb at bico with his wife.

he's a powelifter and oiled his body before every battle, his wife was also a greek and her daugther too.

They only came one year sadly

But i remember one morning i was eating bread while dressed up as a Templar Sargeant and that little girl came to me and asked a bite

i lowered the bread as to say, take some with your hands and she just bited the bread while looking at me directly in the eyes

Her mother just looked at me laughing and said
''Sorry, it's just that we told her that the red crosses are friend to be trusted''

Make a lot of difference from all these ass' creed worshiper that say to their kids
''the templars are baaaad''

this year i killed 9 different kids with my dagger before they could try to hit me with their sword that unfit parents let them have to piss of adults

Fuck kids

I can totally understand that and I wouldn't want it either. But if the only other option is a "one size that fits none" then I would try my luck with doing the measurements over mail. Plus if you have a fairly matching armor it's easier to correct it by someone who is at least a dabbling blacksmith

And about blacksmiths, yeah eastern europe has way more, but the really famous ones (who is expensive because they are good) are usually from western europe. Although I'm pretty sure you can find ordinary ones in villages and such. The key is contacting the local reenactment groups and finding out where they get their stuff, probably they will know a few blacksmith in the general area

don't have experience with them but looks good. the gauntlet for example for 95 euro with included leather gloves totally worth it.
Although it's kind of thin... So the "fully usable in battles" part is only technically correct. You CAN use it in battles against steel weapons but then I hope you are not too emotionally attached to your fingers.

The rest of the stuff is little overpriced here and there but you can find really good deals too, although I just skimmed through of their list (as I see most of their checz stuff are good, de beforementioned gauntlet worth it and there is a gothich bevor too which is kind of expensinve but looks like something that worth it if you are into gothic stuff). The designs overall looks good with a few problems here and there and as I said they are kind of thin. It will be probably good for larping although, don't try reenactment or live steel fighting with these

what I can say for experience is that you MUST try on a gorget before buying. gorgets are kind of the most important part for your comfort and sometimes the whole breastplate and backplate sitting on it too so if it's not comfortable then everything goes to shit. Pauldrons are easier because even if it's a little too large with enough padding you can make it comfortable and work around it.

alright, successfully talked with our blacksmith and have sad news.
Right now he don't know any blacksmith germany that would be good for your requirements, although that's mainly because he don't know THAT much german blacksmiths. Although he said that he will look into it if he has time.

but there are a few other possibilities.
First of all as I mentioned before, try to contact local reenactor groups close to you, they will probably have more information about blacksmiths.

Other possibility is to look up the local SCA groups they know the local blacksmiths too most of the time (and if I'm not mistaken SCA groups exists in germany)

And there is the distant possibility that because of some kind of magic you might want to order it from our blacksmith, he could do it for you a black and white gorget+pauldrons, similar that on the pic for roughly 130 euro although it could be cheaper or more expensive depending on what you want. But as you said and as I said and as he agrees it's way better to find someone relatively close to you where you can try it on and fit it for you while you personally there.

It depends heavily on the region and on the LARP in question.

In western Europe, you'll mostly find the steel looking latex weapons, the round padded things being limited to siege weapons and lances made for stabbing in the UK.
The steel looking latex ones are safe enough, and their greatest advantage is that they look smashing.

The boffer dildos, or padded tubes, are more commonly found in the States. They're mostly being used because they're cheap as fuck, easy to make, and considered safer, especially with an audience that tends to not wear armour.
They're also used because organisers want to avoid legal liability where a storebought latex sword can, heaven forbid, cause bruises or a bloody lip.
Not gonna lie, getting hit by a Calimacil sword on bare skin or simple cloth can sting.

Shields can be bought in the same latex that the swords are made of, or they can be made at home out of wood or acrylic glass, or sheet metal, but homemade ones will always need a layer of padding on the edges. Tube insulation will suffice.

In the UK Stab spears aren't the round stabby dildo spears, They tend to look like pic related.

From what I understand of the differences between american and euro larp, In america they don't pull their blows and treat the game like a fight sport, They also stab with non stab compliant weapons; Hence why they think latex weapons aren't safe.

there is a lot more differences, and not just in equipment but in culture, rules, etc.
And yes some of the games there are even proud that you can and should hit as hard as you can but on the other hand these games are mostly uses ultra light weaponry which is like fighting with an empty pillowcase cut in half.
Also most of these games are technically not larp (Dagorhir, Amtgard, etc)

But again by US larp we speak nearly about a continent and things differ from game to game, same in the Europe. There are trends, sure but you can always find an exception.
Also somehow people only mean the fantasy larps when they say larp and forget that's just a small fraction of the existing larps

The actualy motions you made with your weapons mean dick (sadly), because your weapons are not made of wood and steel, and do not react like wood and steel.

If you're asking if there's larps that use them, I have yet to encounter one.

If you're asking if those are closer to larp weapons or actual weapons, I'd say they're closer to actual weapons.

Also, keep in mind that there's shit you're straight up not allowed to do, like hooking an enemy's weapon, or sliding your blade along theirs, for fear of damaging the weapons.

I love larps, but at the end of the day, we're just playing a game with toys that break easily.

>> No.7782887

>>7782871
some of it could translate to larping but there is a few problems:
completely different weapons. I mean a boffer or latex weapon behaves differently than a steel one. It's way harder to bind as most of the time when two swords hit they just bounce of each other. Not that hardly but still enough to not bind.
Then a lot of things are forbidden. close combat like binding and throwing is most of the time not allowed although that could change from game to game. Head, neck and groin areas are not forbidden to hit for safety reasons generally, although sometimes there are more restricted areas, like the hands or the breast area for girls.
And you will get stuff like the HP systems that most of the US games uses where you have X amount of HP and the weapons do Y amount of damage (every weapon a different one mostly) and if you have enough HP then you can just soak up a few hits while you get close and start stabby time with two short weapons, etc
Plus there is the fact that people can backstab you, or shoot you with arrows or with magic, ect.

The only exception I know is a mass larp that allows shield pushing if both contestants have a wooden shield

Latex larp shields damage too easily when smacking it against armour, and against someone not wearing armour, you might as well be straight up punching them.

And as has been hinted at in the thread, larp armour generally cannot stand up against a shield bash from an actual shield.

Sadly, there's nothing simple about making a metal cuirass, even if it looks simple.

The only decent way of making a decent cuirass/breastplate out of metal is by forging one.

The other option is...

>Make cuirass out of paper
>Bring paper to metalworks
>Have it drafted (drafters hate this kind of bullshit, I promise you)
>Have it cut out of sheetmetal (by laser, water, whatever)
>Have it dished into a non-standard shape

The problem there is that it will be ridiculously expensive due to the drafter's salary, and having it dished into a non standard shape.
Sheetmetal also looks nothing like forged armour.
And all the edges will be sharp, since you can't hem the damn thing.
You could hammer it into shape to keep expenses down, if you're bullheaded, but it's hard and long work for a finished product that will not resemble medieval armor.
You could also pick up some metal sheets and metal shears, but anything you can cut by hand will be less than 1mm thick. On the plus side, this means it will be easy to hammer into shape. On the downside, a simply fall will deform your armor and potentially give you nasty cuts.
You can take the sting off the armor's edge by hemming it with leather, but that means you'll also have to have small holes cut along the edge for your thread to go through. This will drive up expense for lasercutting, and drive your drafter into a fit of rage.

St.37 or QSTE240 is more than good enough for anything cosplay or larp. A thickness of 1.5mm is ideal, 1mm will do. Less than 1 is prone to bending.

If you want to make it stainless, plain 304 will do. If you want to go leightweight, you could attempt it with AlMg3 (aluminium), though that might crack when hammered.

I'll look for some designs, I know I have them somewhere.

>Works against being slashed

It doesn't work as it does in games or popular media. It was mostly worn as protection against impact beneath armour, or as protection from the elements (like those leather trousers cowherds wore over their actual pants).
Leather armour of the day was no better protection than a leather coat you can buy in stores right now, unless it was layered (lamellar and such), which a linothorax wasn't.

Any emergency ward can tell you that a leather jacket does fuck all in knife fights, whether stabbed or slashed at.

Boiled leather was little better. It was better, to be sure, but hardened leather only stays hardened for as long as it doesn't get wet. Along with its strength at absorbing shocks, this was one of the reasons why it was worn underneath the armour.

>> No.7792490

If you take a look at this link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hdbk_NfpIw4 you will see a video done at a university about it showing that yes it did protect against slashing and arrow. Can't watch right now, since I'm at work, have a tl;dw?

If it's about the cloth linothorax (my apologies, I'll use spolas to refer to the leather), then I've no gripe with that. quilted and layered armour was massively effective, specifically because it was layered/quilted. The seperate strands overlapping and entwining was far more difficult to take apart than a few layers of leather.

fully, unlayered, leather armour is much different, though, as even boiled leather is taken apart cleanly by any sharp weapon. Even layered leather armour needed its layers repaired/replaced after seeing combat.

So I still stand by the idea that wearing leather armour over your chain is pretty damn useless.

Linothorax aside, and talking about leather armor in general, because it was better than cloth/nothing. That's still no reason to wear it over anything vastly improved like chain, lamellar, or jack of plates. It stops nothing that the metal armour with padding beneath it wouldn't stop

The video basically shows the depictions of the linothorax, sources, and test footage on various weapons of the time.

Well a leather spolas would have been reinforced with either metal scales or other materials probably faced with some layers of linen as well. The idea is that since leather was easily accessible from cattle that it would serve as a substitute with reinforcement. If you put a couple layers of linen and then some scales the leather would then become more useful. (thats the theory).

>>7792541
lamellar was basically scales for the Greeks,Jack of plates was not used till much later in history and chainmail was invented in what 400 B.C.E while the linothorax was depicted from around 600 B.C.E. So you have to look at the historical records and the type of weapons used against it.

I just read, Wintermark historically always had the broest egregores, should be good to see who how it goes. Doesn't it contradict the whole "We are three but we are one" vibe though?

>> No.7793598

>>7793574
Kinda, but I think it's partly because Wintermark is so fucking big and will allow the Egregores to really stand out as they can go full on with their Tradition trappings rather having one that's a mish-mash of all 3

I wanted to try being a footman in the army during a skirmish.

Eventually i got wounded when a javelin got into my tigth. but i still managed to do a good work of holding the line , i borrowed a plain shield to be as anonymous as possible in that sea of people.

Did not work for long, the emperor came to me during movement to talk about tactics and i was like...nope...i'm not who you think i am rigth now...i'm a simple footman.

i'll be making a ''Petite Noblesse'' Suit pretty soon.

I'm actually looking forward being able to wear a nice Woolen cape for those rainy nigths and something else to wear than my templar suit who is perfect for hot temperatures but shitty for cold if the cape is wet

Pic related: one of those hot days, guess who's not figthing half naked (or with a barrel as ''armor'')

band shirts give you +1 armor and if it's a heavy metal band or the logo has a lot of blood/skulls/etc then +1 charisma too while drunk
