In defense of Fat Cosplay
I feel a great disturbance in the force. As if a million voices cried out in entitled indignation at having to see a fat person enjoying their life and were suddenly not silenced. Indeed, they won't shut up about it.

Its a disturbance we feel every July coming out of San Diego and sporadically the rest of the year at conventions around the world. Pity the poor convention goer who must endure the sight of fat people doing stuff. I mean, don't they know they are fat?!?

I know I shouldn't be surprised. These are issues of privilege, after all, and privilege means never having to have the slightest iota of self-awareness. As a geek/nerd/etc., though, I find it especially disappointing when my fellow geeks wallow in what entitlements they do get. Thus we get the positively absurd sight of people angrily lashing out to protect the sanctity of adults dressing up as cartoon characters.

The arguments are always incredibly silly. "Character X wasn't fat!" is always a go-to. How much nit-picking do you think Wolverine cosplayers get if they are taller than 5'3"? Or Hulk cosplayers for being too short?

They are taking just as much of an activist position on cosplay as the Gender Bent Justice League is. Difference is, they are activists for the status quo.

"Its just not healthy." I swear, you cannot talk about fat people doing anything in their lives without running into this one. Its the fail-safe for those who want to police fat bodies for not meeting aesthetic standards. If someone challenges aesthetics, just pretend its all about health. Tell me, though, what other health standards are enforced for cosplayers. Do we measure people's blood pressure and cholesterol? If you have cancer, do you not get to cosplay? What about the myriad of diseases more prevalent in thin people? Are they forbidden from any moment of fun? As usual, health is a concern stated because our culture has deemed this an acceptable reason to hate people.

Some people are going to want to dress up as characters they look like. Which is awesome. I get that mentality. Other people are going to be drawn to the characters they like. And that's cool, too. That's not what they think, though. They just think there are rules about being fat. It all comes back to privilege. Its obviously absurd to try to codify pretend. I've never cosplayed myself, but I envy the hell out of people who do so it really upsets me when I see someone's beautiful expression of self demeaned by rank bullies. It just wasn't something I feel like my generation did much to begin with, and even there I never really found myself in a community of geeks where I could really feel comfortable exploring that. It bums me out, though. I'd love a great looking Star Fleet Uniform (from Next Generation, of course). I'd love to use my white jacket to cosplay as the villainous Gideon Graves. I went as Jedi for Halloween once in college and you can't tell me holding a lightsaber in your hands isn't flat out awesome. I also remember how "on display" I felt when I wore my white suit and I can only imagine how amplified that feeling would be when cosplaying. Fat or thin. Doing that is incredible and I am in awe of everyone who does it and utterly disgusted with everyone who tries to belittle it for interfering with their pristine sense of aesthetics.

You see, people are into cosplay for different reasons. Some take it seriously, some don't. Fun is subjective. We're all supposed to get along yet we all have different opinions and then we get belittled for having different opinion. Cosplay is personal for alot of people since, in a way, you're bringing a character to life. People have attachments/connections to these characters for their own reasons. When you walk around as said character people are going to judge it. It's not like this is halloween and you're just some slutty ketchup bottle walking around. Actually, "Couch-to-5K" isn't all that hard and is a great starting point for people looking to improve their health and get a little more active. There are a couple different versions of it (personally I prefer the one by CoolRunning because it starts off more gradual, which helps if you aren't in the best of shape). So it's best to do a search and see which one appeals to you.

Too many girls don't understand that almost all of Chii's skirts needed a petticoat to poof them out. But when the back of the her skirt is longer than her front, there is a dilemma of how to poof out the back of her skirt without having excess fabric in the skirt. If you don't poof the back out properly, then the extra fabric tends to hang down at a weird engle that doesn't look like the illustrations. It's actually a fairly common problem when artists draw "lolita" skirts with overskirts that defy the laws of physics (Madoka's god form is another one that comes to mind, as well as Hatsune Miku's white floor-length lolita dress version).

This girl added a hoop pannier that's longer behind than in front, which solves the problem. Not only that, she knew the insides of the pannier would be visible since the back is longer than the front, so she made it pink with ruffles, so that the pannier would blend into the skirt and look nice in photos. The only place she slipped up was that she didn't realise the extra weight from making the hoop longer at the back would upset the balance of the hoop pannier, that's why the front is flipped up and exposing her panties. You can also see how the back is much closer to her legs. I kind of feel bad for that mistake, she got so close and put in so much effort, but then she forgot this one thing about the way hoop panniers behave, and suddenly, permanent panty flash. At least she made the most of it and used colour-coordinated panties to try and cover her mistake.

To top things off, considering her girth, she should have a lot of blobby fat everywhere, but you can see that she has the proper undergarments to keep her fat in check, and she constructted the dress as a near-perfect fit to her body, and she doesn't have any puckering seams or other signs of sub-par construction showing.

It's very different from an eBay-bought costume, I assure you. And I'm not even one of the anons upthread who said it was good.

For me it really comes down to how well does a costume come together. If you're doing cosplay for funsies then fine, whatever. I cosplay for the fun of making something accurate and growing my skills. Anyone can look good in cosplay if know how to wear it. It won't always look accurate but I at least like to see someone made an effort. Too often I see fat cosplayers bitching about how everyone's making fun of them for being a fat cosplayer, when a lot of the time their costume is pretty bad too. I realise the skirt is shorter in front, that is entirely why her hoop skirt is lopsided. The way you can see the hoop practically lifting the front of the skirt, and the way the back is practically knocking her knees makes me think she didn't plan on her skirt being so high up that her panties are on permanent display.

Besides, considering Chii was practically male fanservice, if it was me drawing the manga, I'd be doing the length of the skirt as short enough for an occasional panty flash if you viewed the girl at the right angle, but not full on panties in full view. Though I realise this is my reasoning for why she messed up the hoop skirt.


By the way, for other cosplayers in here, the fix for lopsided hoops is a fairly easy but heavy one -- weigh down the front of the hoop. Haberdashers usually sell curtain chain weights that you can cut up and attach to the last hoop of the hoop skirt.

All of my cosplays are cosplays that are larger characters or one that I "hide" in. I have done a tauren female from WoW (and loved it), no-face, and most recently Emboar.
The Emboar is sadly not as complete as I would like it to be, but still.
I'm all for cosplaying cause it's fun...I'm all for cosplaying what you want...but for the love of god, if you are fat/chubby/overweight and DON'T want to get called out on it, then fucking cosplay something that is fat friendly!! Not. That. Difficult.

Maybe it's partly a health issue, but I've always been skinny and I used to have it pretty bad. Keratosis pilaris, it's called. Keratin builds up in the hair follicle and plugs it up and makes it red and zitty/icky looking. My whole family has thyroid issues except me.

Any time my mom tries to lose weight she gains like 20 pounds. If she eats unhealthy she loses weight.

Thyroid issues can make some people gain massive amounts of weight. My little sister got hers and gained over a hundred pounds despite the fact that she ate a well balanced diet and was at the gym for a minimum of three hours a day.

My older sister on the other hand only gained like 10 pounds.

Medicine doesn't always help either. You have to have the exact dosage or else you can get really sick! Too much and you can go into hypo thyriodism, which would make you lose weight but also become extremely I'll, if not normally a hypo. I had a step grandmother who went through that.
