Awright, so the schedule is up! We still up for meeting?
People wanted saturday afternoon, so I'm just gonna go ahead and suggest 15:00. No idea where since it's babby's first abunai. Main entrance?
How the hell do we recognize each other?

Also: what are you wearing, are you done with your cosplays yet, general discussion, etc.

>> No.7776601

Haha wait shit the cosplay acts are at 15:00.
13:00 maybe?

>> No.7777066

Holy crap, is that the entire program? Nothing happens on Friday until like 17:00.
And on Sunday it basically ends at 15:00.

It's like they planned to get out of bed late on Friday and want to go home early on Sunday, with a big screw you to the day visitors. And to do that, let's push everything onto saturday.

I will definately have to have fun with my friends, because the program will not do it for me.

>> No.7777147

>>7777066
Yeah... the friday especially is quite... bad. There's literally nothing the first two hours. This is why I'm especially happy I managed to get a hold of a saturday ticket still.
On top of that they've got things overlapping each other in illogical ways on saturday. Shironuri lecture and lolita fashion show at the same time? BJD meet and lolita 101 at the same time? If you'd space those out, you could entertain a j-fashion oriented person for a full day.
And I'm bummed the DDR heavy comp, SSBB comp and the CAC are all at the same time.
Ah well.

>> No.7777340

I'm still down for a cgl meet, lolita fashion show ends at 11:30 so practicality anything after that time would be fine. Except for 15:00 because cosplay acts as another anon pointed out.

>> No.7777344

I'm fine with anything, as long as it's not on friday. I have to be at the stage early for the cfs.

>> No.7777393

>>7777340
Haha yeah that was me, I realized my mistake right away.
Should we say saturday 13:00, main entrance then?
Since I'm expecting that to be a busy spot, the question still remains: how do we recognize each other?

>> No.7778650

I know a lot that are on here, but a large part of the comm is cgl negative thinking it doesn't go beyond ita threads and drama. I can imagine it being social suicide to go to a cgl meet up.

>> No.7778721

>>7778650
True, true... but I'm not sure if I care enough. I've never been that into the main comm and I'm pretty sure they don't care about me at all. If I can have fun with cgl, then why would I let them stop me?
And even so, I'm not sure the judgement would be that bad. If that many of them are on here, then how negative could they actually be about it?
Plus it's not like we've got to plaster pictures of the meetup all over facebook and cgl. I'd honestly be surprised if many people would find out about who was there at all.
But hey, your call.

I had a lot of fun, but it was mostly because of the people, not really the con itself. Dealer room was ok, I guess, not very spectacular. I personally was happy with the high amount of general kawaii shit.

Level of cosplay was surprisingly okay, but I didn't see many spectacular outfits. Even the fashion show was... meh. (What the actual fuck at the femshep winning tho? Her acting was fucking horrendous. We literally burst out laughing at it. And apparently, you can shoot a shotgun one-handed now.)
But I think we can all agree that Him was the best cosplay this con. Man. Wish I got a picture. That was awesome.

Also the ballpit was way too popular for a sarcastic joke. But I loved it anyway.

It was boring.. Mostly same old crap.. Only the Mangakissa had some funny new events.

The only thing that started on time and where you could have genuinely fun was the bar.

Also, what the flipping was with the masked ball? Massive amount of people showing up, they held it in the tiniest room they could find.
And then I checked out the friday rave. But I pointed my feet elsewhere when I looked inside. I almost tought they let Power2All back at the buttons.

" I almost tought they let Power2All back at the buttons."

^this, so much this!! it was just loud and obnoxious. People were leaving after the DJ changed. I don't get you keep playing the same loud, no-beat, shit if you see the crowd leaving. the whole damn floor was almost empty at a certain point.

that said. Deshima Sounds was really amazing. had so much fun there. their live-show-act was really cool also. i like how they mix up things and try out new stuff for their events. much props for that. I really liked the music from them. had a blast dancing with friends and just people in general enjoying themselfs.

I just loved that dude. I missed more stuff like that at the con. Like I said, not many spectacular outfits, even if the general level of cosplay was pretty damn okay.

>> No.7792602

the overal convention was okay. I mostly hung out with my friends. But am I the only one that come to conventions only for the night rave parties?

I do like the friday night party. The two british DJ's were great. Although not really suitable for the convention, they had a interesting choice of music. But the last DJ was really horrible. I know it ain't Power2All, but for a moment there I thought it was him..

Deshima Sounds on the other hand, Every year I see those guys get better and better. I thought last year was sick, but this year they amazed me the fuck out. The sound, the choice of music, just brilliant. People complained about playing too much dubstep shit, but I think they actually had a great balance between dubstep and other styles.
But the thing they stood out the most and what was also a total surprise, was their live act thingy. They really set up a great quality show. And the DJ behind the mic, he did surprisingly good and has lots of interaction with the crowd. The whistles, stars and flags.. Who thought of that was a pure genius.
The other two guest DJ's are really really good, and has a great music taste.

Up to next year!

Girls, it was either Sheppard or demon hunter. The rest would have had no chance in eurocosplay. I could see flaws on all of them over 15 rows away. I guess the judges thought Sheppard was better from up close. Personally I thought differently but, yeah, 15 rows away. I do think Sheppard is easier to fix improve since I recon that the suit is made more modular.

The show was weird though. I thought it was filled really fast but there were like 20 acts. And in the fashion show, group acts.

I fucking loved this Abunai. I participated in a lot of events, most of which started on time, the layout was pretty clear, dressing rooms were available, cosplay was generally good, dealer room was fairly okay (though lots of shit was sold out when I got the time to browse), bag rules were reasonable..

and most of all, I had a really good time, and paid almost nothing for sleeping accommodation. I'd do it all over again if I could

Demon hunter wouldn't have had much of a chance at Eurocos. I mean, Shepard had a stageprop, smoke. Just too many points in that department no matter how much better the Demon hunter custome was.

I wouldn't be surprised if there were a lot of drop-out last minute. People were getting notices 1-2 weeks before the con that a spot came up for them to join. so lame, people who duck out at the last moment should just be temporarily banned from joining in the future.

Personally, I was really disappointed.

I skipped the conventions last year due to money troubles.
When I went to Animecon I was really surprised to see the improvements. It was a totally different level. I expected Abunai to improve as well. Instead I found the exact same convention as 2 years ago: almost the same program, almost the same problems with hotels, almost the same issues with sound. Only real improvents were on saturday: the band was much better and the the rave seemed more intense. Maybe I'm going to conventions for too long but aside from the saturday evening the only thing to keep me there were my friends.

Actually, this rule is as old as there are anime conventions. It's just common sense, you wouldn't bring a crate of beer to a bar either.

Altough ACon typically just warns people with a stern "please eat that stuff outside, ma'am", Abunai goes for the "sod off or it's mine".
I remember back when I was a gopher at Abunai (when it was held in Zwolle) a staffmember dropped a stack of pizzaboxes in the gopherlounge. "Free eatings guys!" and then went on proudly telling he got these confiscated.

Truth to be told, it kinda gotten out of hand, I mean, I saw people having entire picknicks in the hallways with AH bags filled with bread and energydrinks and booze.
And there were these nasty rumors among the gophers about how the hotel was going to charge Abunai for all the drinks that was not bought in the hotel.

that's hard to imagine for a convention in the netherlands. I mean there's food at the efteling and such but everyone still brings their own. >> No.7793591

That's because Dutch are chronic cheapskates.. Just because everyone is doing it, doesn't mean it's right or allowed.

It's not about being allowed a sandwich. It's the people who work in the venue, being allowed to make a decent living. Bringing your own food to an eatery is like stealing the bread from the hardworking people's tables. If you fail to grasp that basic rule, maybe going to conventions isn't for you.

sorry this is bullshit. people were told not to drink and eat in some places like the game room and the dealer room to prevent damages. Also, larger meals such as pizza and sandwiches should be consumed in the restaurants or outside.

In addition, it was not allowed to drink alcohol unless it was served by them.

these are all pretty common rules. Abunai doesn't own the place, they don't want to pay for clean-up of food spills. The dealers don't want spills on their manga, the game people don't want dirty controllers and alcohol consumption is always frowned upon in the Netherlands unless you're at a bar or at home.

I did not see any food/drinks being "confiscated", other than people voluntarily abandoning their drinks and food when they didn't want to finish or or walk back to store it somewhere

there's a lot of people that want to talk smack about abunai, and unfounded rumours are unfair towards their hard work. You should be glad there even are anime conventions in the Netherlands; a country that has almost zero anime on television and thus has a tiny ass fanbase

The shipping and import-duties are always such a rip off, especially when you're buying from Asian websites. I think I genuinely get better deals at cons, and usually when I ask the clerk for a lower price, they can honor it.. For one there's no issue with shipping costs, import duties or all that bullshit, and second I can choose the item I like and tell if it's been damaged or whatever. then I can take it home with me in confidence that I got exactly what I wanted

>> No.7795746

>>7795593
While I do agree that import taxes really screw you over when you live in Europe, It's not necessarily true that buying at cons is less expensive.

Most (if not all) dealers at Abunai were from Europe, they also have to pay taxes and shipping to get those products. They include those costs in the sale price.
They also have to add more money to the sale price on top of that, because they need to make a profit to continue their bussiness.

> I saw a few figures I own for sale at 2 times the price I paid for it, taxes and shipping included.

Also, with buying at cons, you have to take into account that there's always the risk that you buy a bootleg product. Not everyone can distinguish a good deal from a scam. If you buy from official websites, you don't have to worry about that.

You can find a good deal at a con every once in a while, but only buying at cons isn't a cheap alternative from webstores.

dude I know, I'm not retarded. But if I buy a figure at abunai for €25 that costs €20 at amiami, and I buy nothing else, the figure will cost me €100 if I import it from Japan.

> But if I buy a figure at abunai for €25 that costs €20 at amiami, and I buy nothing else, the figure will cost me €100 if I import it from Japan.

You don't have to pay taxes for products that have a value lower than 22 euros, so that's a bad example.

More realistically: if you buy for example a nendo from Amiami that costs 25 euros, and pay 10 euros shipment, you'd get 7 euros customs. So you'd pay 42 euros in total. The price almost doubled, I know, but chances that a european dealer is selling an item that has a value of 20 euros for only 25 euros are really, really slim. Especially with the whole 'profit' thing going on.

In my experience, nendo's often go for 55-65 euros at cons. So in this scenario, you could've saved at least 13 euros.

I can understand why some don't like the idea of importing things themselves through the internet. And that's fine, as long as it doesn't bother you that you could've gotten the item cheaper elsewhere.

anyone else has an opinion on this? I always found animecon a bit.... sterile. What abunai lacks in program, it makes up for in people. And animecon is fucking expensive and has no decent food provisions.

How are the other cons? Dunno if it's fair to judge epicon yet since they haven't even had their first "con" yet. Just some sort of... game... event... thingie. Though the whole thing with splitting it into two doesn't bode well for their trustworthiness in general, I guess.

>> No.7798026

>>7798016
Agreed on animecon and abunai, animecon might have a better program, but abunai has a better atmosphere.

The other conventions are barely worth it. Haven't been to epicon. Nishicon hasn't managed to impress me yet in any of their years. Tsunacon also gets a meh from me. Yaycon is the best out of the smaller conventions in my opinion (maybe it's the 16+ rule).

In all cases though, I usually only go to the smaller cons for the people that attend. Hanging out with friends is what makes a con for me, but that doesn't reflect much on the con's quality itself.

>> No.7798267

My experience with animecon is that is so much more busy compared to the other ones. (as well as more expensive) Having to pay that much to barely even squeeze myself in less than a quarter of the events and having no decent place to even stand is not my thing. Especially not for that price.

The dealerroom isn't necessarily bigger than Abunai/Nishicon too. I'll have more fun with a smaller con really. Chibicon was a lot of fun when it was still there.

>> No.7798305

I disagree on it being more expensive.

Sure, the ticket is more expensive, but train costs alone offset that. Cheap hotels in the Hague are also easier to get.

Especially this year I think it was pretty clear. Animecon seems to raise their level (guests, bands) and Abunai did more or less the same thing for another year. Personally I find the atmosphere different, but good on different ways.

By the way, why were both the Tsunacon events canceled? Any story behind this?

And I also heard about judges on friday basiacally being very mean during judging.

The only people complaining about the judges being 'mean' were the girls who ended up winning CFS. Kek.
Even more hilarious when you take into account that they told everyone backstage that they bougt a corset (and sewn fabric on top of it), that daddy put in the eyelets, and that a part of the costume fell off after judging.

But they told the judges they did everything themselves so they won.

Actually, the prom isn't exactly new. Animecon has been experimenting with that for a while. They didn't even bother to learn from Animecon's previous mistakes (crappy music, small room).
The only difference might be that it is a masked ball. Something the local (rural) cosplay groups has been doing for years.

The live concert has been there for a while as well. Except instead of flying a band from Japan (who might be known for some OST), they turn to krauts singing Japanese songs. Oh, and you have to buy seperate tickets for the concert. Something that isn't even allowed, iirc.

>> No.7798975

>>7798593

Abunai's first prom was kind of like Animecon's first prom: wrong music, sucky DJ and silly door management. (They were keeping people out at door #1 claiming it's too crowded and letting people in at door #2)
However, Animecon had better speakers with bass cabs and all, so compared to Abunai's set of PC speakers on stands without any bass cabs I could see and from the sound of it, the DJ running things well in the red, I'd say Animecon's first ball wins.

>> No.7798987

>>7798593
By the way: it's allowed to let people pay extra for a concert: nothing illegal about that. Point is that you also need to pay a percentage of your income as convention to copyright extortionists.. Errrr copyright holders for the music the band plays.
Since you also need a ticket for Abunai itself to get access, the copyright holders can claim their percentage off of the entrance fees for the con itself, which is significantly higher than the 500-or-so Euro Abunai gets on concert tickets.

>> No.7799085

Yep. Those ones. And everyone backstage knew.
Then when at judging they said "we made everything ourselves, we did the corset so and so!".
I later also heard that they'd said their mum had done the ruffles on the skirt for them. Considering they'd mentioned they only entered for fun, I had expected they'd be honest about what they had and hadn't done.

Basically they did the rhinestones themselves and the most basic parts of the skirt. The rest was either bought or done for them.

So buying a corset, letting your mum do the skirt and your dad do the eyelets totally equals a self-made costume right?

The rules state that you need to mention it if someone else helped you. And buying, like their corset, isn't allowed at all.

Not with questions like " why did you choose satin" but more like: "This is bad, this thread is red but you must have used blue" and "This is the wrong fabric, not good for you at all." (loosely quoting here what they told me).

Now, do not say that you should be happy and all pretending to be "wooooo" during judging when it sucks, but the last thing you want to do is break the contestant's confidence before they go on stage. My girlfriend was judged by Yaya 2 months ago, and she walked away very happy, even though the feedback pointed to some major flaws afterward once she got them back by mail.

Yeah, he's pretty inoffensive. The type of person that you should either ignore or curtly explain that you're not interested if you find him bothering, but I don't think he really bothers anyone per say? He's just really lacking in social understanding.

As for Abunai I had an OK time. The cosplay workshops were really good, and the presenters I saw were really helpful to beginners which is great. I actually didn't do anything else other than hang out in the gameroom (don't even bother to cosplay for Abu anymore), but I'm not sure if that says more about their program or the fact that I've grown out of cons.

It feels unfair to compare Abunai and Animecon because I think they aim to provide a different kind of experience. I massively prefer Animecon though, last year it felt so professional and there were actual cool guests. All other Dutch cons are more somewhere you go to chill and hang out and have fun in cosplay.

At CFS judges didn't even ask questions after their opening question "what are you most proud of" , then they just pointed out every little flaw in a not so subtle, just say rude, way, while the cosplayer was still there. Constructive criticism, I think 2 of the judges never even heard of that term. One of the contestants had been a judge for the CFS in the past and said they can not do that, because as said above, you put contestants down before they go on stage. They also did not look at props, even though props were a major part of some cosplays.

When the show had already been delayed for almost an hour (partly because the judges had arrived late) they said "Just get on with the fashionshow without us sitting in front to 'judge', the CFS is only about the costume anyways." Like, what? Let's judge the fashionshow without seeing the fashionshow right? Like all the cosplayers did not put effort in that too.

I say to the judges, just write down your negative comments instead of blurting them out and stomping the cosplay contestants in the ground before the show, they all put effort in it. The cosplay judges also were not in cosplay, bit disappointing.

I still love that the HIM cosplayer got a honorable mention for his costume and amazing stage preformance, they should keep a price like stage preformance in there. What do you guys think?

Yo no one in here is saying you didn't sew the costume. They're saying you didn't sew the corset. You bought the corset and sewed fabric on top of it, if you think that equals "making the corset" you're fucking dumb and your post proves that.

You bought the corset, probably because you can't sew a corset or didn't feel like making one. I'm just guessing here. Both are equally bad. And you should feel bad for telling the judges that you "made" it when you clearly didn't.

If things get too hard when cosplay-making, your solution is not to buy the thing and disguise it with fabric and pass it off as "making". A corset is made by sewing parts together and adding boning, not buying one and altering it.

I had a great time at Abunai. True I had some moments I was bored a little bit, thank god for 3DS streetpass, but overall I did some nice workshops and saw a couple of nice shows :) To bad the fashion show had such a terrible long delay. I indeed noticed that the level of cosplay was a bitt better then previous years. The deshima disco was awesome, at the end my friends and I kept party going in the hotel room and oh man I was so waisted the next morning. I really loved the time I spended at Abunai!

Anyway I am looking for 2 cosplayers or whatever it's called, the first ones were from Bob's Burgers dressed as Tina and Louise, the second one was a guy. He was on friday and saturday and was wearing a Portal costume the same one Chell wears at the second game only he had orange/blue paint marks and a belt with lemon grenades, that was awesome! Unless you're in theatre and you want to make your entire wig from scratch and make the platform for the shoes and build your way around it - sure thing go for it.

There is no real way to learn how to make a wig from scratch, and no real way to make a shoe from scratch. This is known. You /can/ however learn how to make a corset from scratch.

You can learn how to make a corset, I've seen 15 year olds manage to pull of something decent with some googling and tutorials.

It's a different matter to net out a whole wig and sew every weft into the right place. Let alone cobble together your entire shoe. (Though I am in favour of people needing to make their own shoe cover if the cosplay doesn't require ordinary/generic shoes. Again, something that can be googled and learned.)

Yes of course. You do need knowledge of the topic at hand, but you don't need to be as good as.

What I am trying to say is that even those who can't sew properly, can still tell if there's something wrong with the fabric choices or the way it's constructed. And in this case - that sewing on top of a corset is not the same as sewing a corset.

But you're right, they do obviously need some knowledge of the topic at hand.
