Here's what I have cooking up for Saboten this year. Saboten is test run con before I head over to yaoicon this year.

Volleyball manlet
Bicycle Bitch
Flashback Disco MILF.

Not sure what days I'll be wearing them, I guess whenever the group meet ups are going to be. Toudou and Nishinoya are almost done I just need to finish painting shoes and buy knee/elbow pads. Ragyo's labcoat and Nui egg is being commissioned by a friend, I'm still working on the wig. Hope to see you all again at the /cgl/ meet up!

Not him but all Arizona cons besides PCC are the same boring shit, just each year a teeny bit is shaved off of the budget and teeny bit is added to the prices. All the panels are the same, the guests are nothing (though last year's Sabo was good), and the events are mediocre. Once you start going to more conventions you'll understand.

The one thing that carries Sabo year after year is its location.

>> No.7722449

I actually WOULD recommend Taiyou if you're 21 or over. It's a small con and doesn't have much, but it really shines at night.
PCC actually has real guests that cost money and has a shitton of vendors, panels, and events. It is family oriented and focused on comics/scifi rather than anime/shit which is different since most of our cons are anime focused or comic book focused.

>> No.7722462

>>7722425
>I feel you. the price for sabo is high for what it is, I paid about the same for my AX badge.
AX costs $20+ more than Sabo, factoring in the time of the purchase? But alright, whatever. You might have paid early for AX and late for Sabo.

>also I've never been to taiyou but wanna check it out.
Taiyou's pretty good, you should check it out. New location this year.

>so besides bringing in 50k+ heads what's up with PCC?
75k+ now.
But yeah, I really don't like it either. It's big and mainstream as fuck. I'd say it's probably the huge names, and the accessibility of it? As in, a lot of normal, hardly geeky people, with some interest in pop media and culture know about it and find it completely alright to attend. Just being huge on it's own is enough of a draw.
I personally can't stand PCC, but that goes for most huge cons. I've never gone to a con for a guest or panels or whatever, so PCC just overwhelms for a few moments then proceeds to bore the hell out of me for the rest of the weekend.

I think the problem is, people aren't going to enter. Sabo isn't a big enough con for people out of state to really care, even with the WCS stuff possibly being a reason to come out for it. And even if we just look at possible entrants in-state, no one really does costumes in groups of two. Like, even if there are some people that could potentially stand a chance if the were sent to the bigger contests, this state just doesn't have people that do pairs.

I mean, I've been seeing people talking about it on facebook and doing all sorts of calls for partners, but I don't think anything has really come of it.

It's really looking like the WCS stuff at Sabo is just gonna flop. Which, I honestly kinda want to see happen. Maybe it would serve as a wake up call for Greg and make him realize that the way he's running things isn't making people want to go to his cons.

Oh my god, I hated Taiyou. Worst con I have ever been to.
The hotel was expensive, even though I had six people in my room. Security lady running around was a BITCH and kept telling cosplayers that they were out of dress code and kept calling legit con media "creeps" for taking photos of cosplayers.

I will never attend again, even though one of my close friends is high up on staff.

It was a miserable con.

Oh, and the downstairs area where they hosted the raves, tea parties, and maid cafes?

Cool on the idea since it is away from the con and is an ACTUAL restaurant, but the lighting is god awful and the whole room really needs to be updated.

There was no ventilation, so during the rave is smelled TERRIBLE. Like more so than most con raves. And some fucking drunk college bros stampeded the rave and started shit. It was bad and the cops were called so the vibes were killed.

The lolita tea party was run fine, but the room was so dimly lit it was awful. I could barely see.

As for the maid cafe, I couldn't attend the AYS cafe I paid for because the idiots changed the date and time IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CON.

TL;DR

I will never attend again based off the fact I don't live in town, high hotel prices, and inexperienced staff.

It does have potential though. But until then, I will save my money for a better convention (or buy more brand)

yeah make sure you drink water, the one good thing about most AZ cons is they've started providing water around the convention site like in the backs of panel rooms and such. But also you need to be mindful of little things like photoshooting outside and walking to a restaurant for dinner. inside is usually pretty cool and comfortable but being outside can be daunting depending on the outfit

Drink water, rest, don't be in the sun for too long. If you have a prop, be mindful of it. Are there parts of your prop or costume that are heat sensitive? Arizona will still be around 100 by the time Sabo comes around. If you have a car, don't leave stuff like that in there. Monster hunter I think depending on their skit can do it, my only concern it their craftsmanship because after looking at their stuff up close for a while it's not bad, but it does need a lot of refinement based on their conni stuff so I'm interested in seeing what they bring to the table. didn't cosplay zone also bring us the fursuits of horror? IDK if it's the same people but... we'll have to see.

As for the other teams, Dragon Roulette I've seen a ton and they've never left much of an impression personally. Very bland faces and pretty average craftsmanship. As for the other teams Princess Butts are the only other ones I've ever interacted with and with that it's been pretty limited to buttercup. She's not a bad person in the slightest but I feel that they lack.... refinement I guess is the right word. I can't follow her page because she just posts everything with very little filtering of photos if any. I also feel that her tailoring is kinda off as well as her makeup but that's just me.

But I feel like I somehow got like a $400 bill at the end (I put my card down for the hotel, and there weren't any incendentials charged to the room so)

Thinking about it, I think it was $60 a person. But someone backed out on me last minute so I got stuck paying their bill and it was $120, plus I think I paid a lot for my badge?
I can't remember. So maybe it was just a lot for me.
So I guess for now I'll take my comment back about expensive hotel.

All I remember is that at the con my friend and I were so bored, so being bored at a con we spent gas, hotel, and badge at it wasn't worth it.
One of our roomies was so bored he left and went home during Saturday.

All I can say is I was super bored that con and do not plan on traveling for it again. Not even if there's a killer guest name.

Your comment really gets me thinking: 'I paid for this I shouldn't be bored!' Is the mentality I feel, and that might be the underlying problem of cons, and our biggest issue with AZ cons being 'boring'. We complain about Greg's cons being always the same, but that's his business practice isn't it? If he knows it does well why change it for a gamble on what might not pay out. That's probably why we se more old school and very popular things being the themes of his cons (cowboy bebop, eva, silent hill) because he knows they have an established fanbase and he can make money off of the general populous. Taiyou I feel follows more with what's currently popular and niche things, and their willingness to stay current and take gamble's might be why we feel that they have better potential.

I personally think that AZ cons should cater better to bringing new content to their shows in the sense of 'oh hey you really like to draw? Well instead of just having drawing 101 panels with guests let's bring in sponsors to help teach' because personally one of my highlights of my first cons was doing a copic marker demo panel where they taught you how to use the markers (and provided some to everyone during the panel to play with) On that note I would like to see more industry, like I do like the voice actor panels, I want to see funi and viz talk about what they're bringing to the table in merch for the next semester, new releases etc. I feel like that would help balance the sheer number of basically shitty fanpanels that are just there to 'discuss' shows and do fan Q and A's. Might be a long shot and a dumb opinion, but I feel like if you're bored, find something to do, but at the same time the cons should help cater to those of us that go to every event, older, and a little further on in learning than first time con goers.

I /strongly/ disagree on this one. Greg is super opposed to any sort of criticism. Any time someone has brought up something to him on a person to person basis in my circle of friends he always gets super defensive and throws out responses like, "Well you don't understand what it's like to run a Business" and "The inner workings of a convention are just too difficult for you to get" I have never heard him take a bit of criticism and use him to better his conventions, maybe he just has beef with every single person that I know, however I highly doubt that's the case since our community isn't the most vast, but it is pretty varied and I try to interact with as many people as I can. Even if you don't know anyone who has tried to suggest something or voice their opinion to Greg, you can use this video as a metric to go by.

Maybe you've been getting rain in Tuscon, but it tends to evaporate before it hits the ground here in Glendale.

>> No.7783758

Yes I do spend a lot of time with him, when have you spent a large amount of time with him?
Since when were you around him when he's done that? He's hasn't mentioned drink in a lot of the most resent cons, pluses who doesn't say they like to drink at convention so many people say it at these AZ cons about how they want to go get wasted/ day drinking and such. I still don't see him as a frat at all, I think you just think to low of him.

Plus the only time he mentions stupid stuff he's done in the past is when people bring it up, which happens to be a lot. It seems like every time he makes a mistake everyone jumps on him.

>> No.7783775

>>7783758
You know what, that's totally fair. Maybe you have spent more time with him than me, or its something like Ive been near him more frequently when he's said something stupid.

I dont currently think very highly of him and I think he needs to get his head on straight cause, from what I've been seeing, he's not thinking straight recently

And, sure, maybe your his best friend or something, so sure stand up for him, but shouldn't you call him out? And I don't mean just jump on him when he makes a mistake, I mean actually make sure he realizes what he did and that he should try to do better in the future

I dont hate him or whatever, but for real, dude needs to actually learn from his mistakes more often.

>> No.7783802

>>7783775
Is not that dumb to know he knows when he makes a mistake and he fixes it quickly. We do let him know when he's made a mistake but normally he knows when he's make a mistake.

I think his heads mot on straight because he started ASU this past week so that and work is where all of his time is going to. Maybe he is burnt out I don't know you'll have to ask him yourself. Just send him a message he will probably respond to you -assuming your friends on Facebook-
