Maybe it's just me, but it only slightly bugs me when I see a Link cosplay that mixes up canons. Like if someone's supposed to be cosplaying as Twilight Princess Link and yet has a Hylian Shield that looks more like Ocarina of Time or Skyward Sword's design. Or people using their natural hair for their cosplay, which I often see a lot for Link cosplays, usually not good.

This. I definitely think people are free to cosplay whatever they want regardless of their inherent traits. That's not something people can really change about themselves anyway, so there's no point in berating them for being what they are.

But some cosplays are going to look better than others. This is a fact. And that's okay, really. If you're in it just to have fun, then that shouldn't matter. And even if you're in it to get better, then take it as a step forward, in that you need to improve to get better. None of it means you're a bad person at all, it just means... your cosplay is not up to par, that's all.

As a cosplay photographer, I really hate it when me or some other photographer get flak for not taking your picture or not getting you in a video. We have a limited amount of time, we like to spend time with our friends, and we will take your costume if it looks good. If I don't take a picture of your costume that could mean several things:
1. I didn't notice you
2. I noticed you but I was too tired to run up to you to ask for a photo
3. Your costume/presentation sucks and it wasn't worth my time to photograph you.

I had that issue last year at acen and one of the first people i saw at the photoshoot i went to was dressed as the same character. I was all excited said hi and waved. Personally, story, sub-par animating and Monty Oum's ego aside, the characters are interesting and the costumes are pretty cute. Some are kind of eh but some, along with their weapons, seem like a fun challenge to try to make. The battle sequences are a rather big redeeming factor IMO.

I know it is frustrating but think about it. These people's entire lives are based around looking nice dressed up like fictional characters. It's a fun hobby but anyone taking it seriously is delusional.
Suppose they even do get popular, which they will not, what happens then? They're popular in an incredibly small community. If they stop producing costumes or get old I guarantee everyone will forget about them in a hot minute. Just look at the "what happened to them" threads on here, they are literally about people who were big 2-3 years ago. TWO or three years and everyone has forgotten about them. Replaced by hotter, younger cosplayers with more free time and boob jobs, or they just got old or they grew up and moved on and literally no one cares.
It's a sad fate. It's even sadder than aging as a model or stripper because at least you got paid for it. The most that cosplayers can realistically wish for is a few hundreds bucks in fanboy cash for prints and to get invited to some shitty conventions. I don't get this sentiment. Her fulltime job is cosplay and nothing she wears is really that impressive. She has the skills of someone who wasn't very talented to begin with but has steadily improved over four years and that's exactly what her costumes reflect. They aren't super awesome and they aren't above what anybody with a lot of time and encouragement could do. It's like accusing a journalist of hiring other people to write her articles because they started getting pretty decent over the last few years.
Basically, she's a pretty girl so people think she is stupid and incapable of learning how to do anything moderately better than a child.

I've said it for years, "Yes I know sex sells but this hobby was one place, ONE place sex hadn't became a major factor." We doted on skill and now we are reduced to JNig and Yaya being the poster children of our hobby. (yes I know Yaya is skilled, I've known her since 1998, but she let those boobs take over her craft)

Yes. Exactly. I loved this hobby because it was the one place where sex (and looks) wasn't the defining factor. Cosplay appeared as a little strange, but very interesting hobby that sometimes produced jaw-dropping results that made people gasp even if you weren't a cosplayer or didn't know anything about it. When I started cosplaying years ago the most prominent cosplayers were those who were just skilled as fuck and put effort into their costumes, I think Francesca Dan was the worst attention whore we had and she wasn't half as ridiculous as JNig. And at least the attention whores of our era did the costumes themselves and didn't have a team of lackeys doing all the shit for them.

And now we have bitches like JNig and Yaya and Heroes of Cosplay defining our hobby. That said, there is no gene that makes someone 200lbs overweight. There are illnesses that can cause accumulation of fat deposits (like lipedema) but those are not nearly common enough to account for the current obesity rates.
