My parents got married at a state officials office. My dad wore some weird pink suit that had bell bottoms with a giant tie, and my mum wore some black hippy peasant dress with some rainbow like embroidery on the bust. They then had a small party at an apartment they were renting with friends and family then travelled around the world. My boyfriend's parents got married on the beach in a suit and dress handmade by his mother. All the pictures have them either wrangling their two toddlers or romping around knee-deep in the surf. Last year was their 25th wedding anniversary and they invited all the same people who attended their wedding (+ new additions, like me) and went for a picnic. It was great.

These big white weddings and the people who want them (or consider them to be the norm) are so alien to me. I don't know anyone who shelled out big money on a white wedding dress. It's not that we're poor, they just have different priorities. If I were to get married in one of those BtSSB wedding dresses that alone would probably make my wedding the most extravagant one my family has seen.
