>Mami Tomoe's soul gem and drill curls

I'd love to get some help and advice on these if anyone are experienced!!

The soul gem is made from the top of a bottle, and i'm thinking of using clay and wire to make it look more soul gem-y (??) but i'm really lost as to how i'm going to do it...

As for the drill curls i think i've fucked up majorly, i used wire and clear tape, but i'm pretty sure they're too short and bad to actually glue wig hair to... I don't know if this is the right thread to post this in but eh, it's a wip!!

First time working with Apoxie sculpt! Using it for the details on Nausicaa's helm from the manga.

I got surprised on just how heavy it made the helm. my friend warned me but I didn't expect it to be THAT heavy. I had to peel off the middle leaf and quickly cut and glue down the same shape in thick craft foam, then I skimmed that in apoxie. The result was not as heavy but its still... well I'll have to figure out a good way to secure it so its not constantly falling down.

Started working on the sword today. First time using expanding foam. I'm still working on carving and making sure all the edges look ok. Any suggestions on what to use to seal this would be great. I have googled a bunch of different tutorials but i definitely don't want this to be heavy/bulky. This is pretty much the last piece i'm working on other than the sheath. I have the leather for that. Ordered the wig last week thursday. It's not in stock so i'm waiting on that til early/mid august. Finally winding down with the larger pieces which is great. I have detailing to do but as long as the bigger things are complete i'll have plenty of time before Daishocon.

I'm working on a San cosplay from Princess Mononoke. For accessories, I have the necklace almost ready and the dagger finished! I'd love to hear any suggestions!
>silver earrings
I don't have pierced ears and I was going to use fake hoops, but what should I make the silver earrings out of to make them realistic yet lightweight? I considered clay but people online complain that they're too heavy to carry. Paper seems too flimsy and I considered aluminum foil or painting craft foam, but they both seem silly looking.
>mask, ears, and cloak
I'm not sure where to begin?? I made a single test ear out of cardboard and slapped some paint on, but I dislike the shape. Should I use fimo clay instead? How would I attach the ears and mask to the cloak? In addition, what kind of shape should I cut the fur so it can be a hood and a cape?

Hey. Updating. From the last thread my Spider-man costume is coming along great. The brick patten and muscle sharing is awesome and my web shooters are arriving tommorow from Shapeways.
I'm working on some serious weight loss but I'm a pretty broad set guy. My gut is a lot smaller but my love handles are my biggest let down in the skin tight suit.
Also my legs are pretty bulky so they look pretty big in the suit

TL;DR
I'm probably to fat/tall/and broad to be Spider-Man. How much do people hate cosplayers with wrong body shapes? Even if the costume is very good?

1: its well made, so people will notice that first

3: the muscle shading will further help point two, so you get a little extra leway.

>>7714092
I would highly recommend paper mache + paperclay for the mask and ears. You can make a nice hemisphere by covering a balloon in paper mache strips and then popping the balloon after it's cured, and paperclay will adhere nicely to it for additional details. Might want to paperclay over the 'claws' on the necklace too, to make them more organic looking.
I see bubbles on the knife blade: you need a stickier adhesive + more burnishing. Watered-down wood glue works really well.

>> No.7718558

Fun fact: fiberglass resin is not actually a thing.

What most places sell for fiberglassing is actually a polyester resin. You can use most resin compounds for fiberglassing, polyester is just the cheapest generally. Epoxy resins tend to be less brittle and lighter and less toxic, and you have better control over the cure time, but it's not uncommon for people to have epoxy allergies.

More Nausicaa WIP, cut out the stuff for her dagger though I'm thinking about recutting the handle in wood, since the foam isn't the strongest stuff. Also kinda showing how I handled putting the apoxie on the helm, the left photo is thick white foam superglued down and then I cover that in a thin layer of the apoxie sculpt. I was gonna say about polyester resin, it tends to eat foam before curing making it a poor candidate for reinforcing foam pieces, as well as being really prone to shrinking. More Nausicaa progress. I was working on the muzzle of the rifle and getting frustrated with how weird it looked. I was basing the muzzle off of how it looked on a Nausicaa figurine, but in the film and manga it is quite slim, so I realized I needed to remake it. The original foam one can be seen in the bottom photo.

So I decided to remake it with sintra. Honestly styrene would've been easier but the sheets I had on hand were too thin. I made a pattern in 3mm craft foam then cut out the sintra on my scroll saw and used a heat gun to wrap it around the barrels. Not bad! I'm still working on not getting textures and dents in my sintra, I THINK its because I'm heating it too close, but for now I fix it with sanding and filler primer. To finish it off gotta bondo the seams and the top of that lower section where the musket cleaning rod goes in.

I also discovered that epoxy resin DOES NOT eat EPS foam! A really nice guy on this forum did a test with photos to prove it, so I went out to my local Hobbytown and bought some 15 min epoxy resin to clear coat the EPS foam stock for the rifle so it won't break at dragon*con. Still so much left to do!!

Does anyone have experience with Crayola Air Dry clay? I'm trying to make a Deku mask and I'm not sure what kind of clay to use. I have 2.5 lbs of it conveniently lying around, but from what I've heard, it breaks/cracks easily/is heavy. However this is from troll horn tutorials and they seem happy with the end product. I'm pretty much copying theangrymasksalesman's process, but he doesn't specify his materials. Can anyone recognize the clay he is using? I'd message him, but he's inactive, so I doubt I'll get a reply.

>>7722795
actually, crayola's clay is super light. That being said it's not the most durable.
the best advice I heard about using it, is knead the fuck out of it. You're more likely to get cracks at seams.

Also cracks tend to happen when the clay dries too quickly. If it's not very humid where you are, put your mask in a storage container with the lid slightly cracked. It'll help slow dry times.

you could also use papercaly, but keep in mind the stuff is pretty dense (heavy) and prone to shrinking.

>> No.7723074

>>7722363
are you planning on wearing this or holding it up to your face? If the former, most clays would be WAY too heavy. I'd probably make a base out of model magic and then use paperclay to smooth out rough parts/cracks and add detail where needed.

A+ on deku mask choice btw. I made one in ceramics class years ago and it's still on my wall.

Nah you're right, mushy describes it perfectly haha. I'm assuming you're talking about the dome area. That's because underneath it is a bunch of uneven surfaces and bumps around the vulcans. ;-; That outer layer of foam doesn't do a very good job of hiding it lol. There were lots of things that didn't quite come out the way I wanted them to, but I'm satisfied with how it looks as a whole :) I just have to get some tinted thin plastic sheets for the eyes and it'll be done! Thanks for the feedback! I should have specified that I made a paper mache base and that it's layered on thick to give the mask depth. Then I'll roll out my air dry clay (after much kneading like anon suggested) and put a thin, hopefully light layer of clay on. I'll watch it as it dries and fill in cracks if needed. Is this a good plan?

Scarlet hammer poppy. I lovingly call it scrap hammer poppy because all the bits I used to make it are left overs or cheap materials. It's not perfect but I like it so far. I am hating the task ahead of me, to paint all the other parts red, red just takes so many applied layers.

hmm I think this is a fairly solid plan. if you want to avoid clay all together, you could honestly just make everything paper mache then reinforce it with resin.

Finished re-making about half my cosplay recently. First cosplay I ever did was Hei from Darker than Black. I already knew how to sew, so the jacket was fine, but the mask and sword (And lack of a wig, black dyed hair looked so bad, kill me) were total "EH" tier. The rest of the cosplay just seemed thrown together

Remade the mask using new techniques. Worked amazingly (Isn't a lumpy, small piece of shit anymore)

JUST finished the blade this evening, images in the imgur album. Its shorter, sharper and thinner(By 1/4th of an inch, my god), and has a bit more detail and care put into it. And the paint job is MUCH better than the old one. It doesn't look hand painted and lumpy, and its got a mirror like sheen to it.

1. This kind. These are bigger than the ones I have used in the past.
2. I dont know exactly but these are the medium size ones and the faceplate has 3 of them. That face plate takes a pretty good tug to get it off. There is no way the face plate is moving unless you mean for it to come off. I have jumped around and head-banged in it and it doesn't budge. The face plate magnets do not actually touch one another. They are separated from each other by 2 1mm pvc sheets. The grip is very strong even with this. If they were directly connected I suspect I might not be able to remove the faceplate at all or not without some considerable effort at least. These are very strong magnets.
3. The fins connect with just 1 set of magnets each as opposed to the 3 sets for the face plate so they aren't as tight but still quite sturdy. They wont move no matter how much I jump or head-bang. If they get knocked off by another con-goer, which is always the case in my experience, they can just pop back on rather than having to be re glued on or making an ugly crack at the bond point.

Finished the neck corset last night and one of the sleeves, sans beading and elastic to hold it up. No photos of other progress, but faced the neckline of the dress and closed up the back seam. Adding the zipper and hemming tomorrow. Focusing on hand-sewing tonight to finish the puff for the second sleeve. Then beads. Hopefully. Painted the tiara and earring pieces, but can't assemble for at least 24 hours until the paint is stable.

While I have no pictures (as I've only just begun), I'm starting on a set of armor based off of this picture. I have the sword already and I have a friend's uncle willing to sell me the chainmail for it. My only issue will be the shield and the tunic. If anyone has advice for that, it'd be greatly appreciated. I'm not the best with creating things.

Slow progress on my Escaflowne feet. Only got an hour or so each week to work on it but the feet are coming together.

Used expanding foam to do the domes at the back as using eva foam for compound curves scared me too much.

The top part is quite rectangular but it'll all be hidden by the large lower leg/shin plate that overhangs the foot.

I have been working on Sayaka's sword for a friend. This is the first time I am making a prop for a person other than myself, let alone being paid for it. I am a little doubtful in my own abilities but I feel like it is shaping up pretty well.

There is still a lot of sanding that I need to do before it's totally ready to send off to her but for the time being with just some primer and a flat black layer I think it looks pretty nice.

Yeah, composition is sintra and epoxy clay for some of the weird geometry I couldn't figure out with just PVC sheets. I would have used pipes to reduce a lot of the work but the standard sizes most hardware stores carry wouldn't fit my calves/thighs so in order to get the cylindrical shapes I had to bend two sheets using the biggest sized pipes I could find, form them around my legs, and seal up the seams with clay or Bondo.

I'd recommend not just outlining everything in black like that. It's better to mix colors to produce something near black, use darker browns etc. Alot of the reason Kamui's husband outlines in black is because WoW has a very cartoony appearance. Nothing against WoW by any means, her husband was just trying to get as close to that look as possible. I'd also recommend leaving some areas lighter than others if you're shooting for realism, especially if you want to create a worn appearance. There would be scuff marks, nicks, dings and alot of other things if this was 'realistic'. The horns look too heavy in color and are almost indistinguishable from the helmet. It looks too uniform. As my art teacher always told me 'it's always easier to go darker but not lighter.' I can tell you put alot of time into this and detail wise it looks great.

The fit in the chest seems a bit off, unless you planned on padding it. The bootcovers look really neat and I like them very much! The brown corset seems to be just fabric sewn to the top, with some boning it could look more fitting and right(and maybe even cinch the waist a bit). I'm not sure about the lace you used, I always imagined Leafa to have that strange scalloped edge in her pants and socks but I think that's up to intrepretation. Puffy sleeves could be stuffed a bit with some tulle or something like that to give them some volume. That's all I can come up with. It looks neat, though, even though it's missing some details. With more time this would've been really smashing and it's not bad now either. I'm sure you can do even more great costumes soon!

My method doesn't work very well for rounded shapes though it can be done. It would also be a problem for anything that needs to be very form fitting since my stuff tends to be very rigid.

Huh.

Does sound like it could work. Or could use worbla or Kaidex on top of the wiremesh as both can usually settle right in and wouldn't need resin or anything to keep its integrity.

Do you use any lining on the inside of your armor to pad it? Or is the EVA foam usually soft enough to rest on your body?

I pad my suit with dense upholstry foam, the green kind you see in joannes. I usally paint it black where it will be visible to an onlooker.

The only parts of my suits that are made from EVA are the thighs and biceps since those need to move around alot. If you go full EVA it can rest on you but keep in mind it doesn't breath at all. It will get hot if your totally enclosed in it very quickly.

>Pretty much finished the helm, still looks lumpy but I kinda like that handmade look and it'll look better with metal paint and dirt in the crevices
>Googly eyes are a REALLY good/cheap substitute for cabochons (59 cents at Joanns for 34!)
>Successful testing of using epoxy resin on bare EPS/pink foam, used 15 min cure resin "glue" from HobbyTown

A note on the epoxy, it cures glossy clear and hard, I only used a cm of fluid from each bottle for two coats on that sword handle. I would not recommend this method for large pieces because it would be VERY expensive (it was $16 for that bottle size) and at that point it would be better to get urethane casting resin. Its also has "non" toxic fumes (i.e. still use in a ventilated area, but it only has a slight rotten egg odor, as opposed to ghastly stinky polyester resin)

Yeah, his tutorials are pretty good and give you the basics you need to know about working with sintra.

Sintra retains it's shape after heat forming. I'd advise using thick gloves for your first time. If you're wondering about how rigid it is, if you've ever worked with, seen, or used a PVC pipe/signboard for anything, it's the same thing since sintra is literally a PVC sheet.

Almost fucking done! Just got the sword/sheath left. Might need to remake it since i'm dumb and made the sheath first. Shoes are just being propped up by mannequin since the shoes don't stand up straight so don't pay attention to the strap that's curved up higher. Making two swords. Tried two different things after paper mache. One i did celluclay. Horrible horrible idea. Another i did Paper clay. Much better choice. Alot easier to sculpt and sand but i'll finish both and that way i'll have a back up. I'll be dirtying shit up eventually. I sharpie dyed the wig as well and sort of styled it a touch. Gave me a chance to practice shit since it's only my thirrd wig i've ever styled. Other than that i'm pretty pleased with how everything came out in the end. Hopefully i'll have this done next week.

Figured this was the best place to ask.
I would like to build a Liberty Prime costume but ive no clue where to even begin. What material would best replicate that scavenged metal look? I think I can make some of the minor details with expanding foam but I cant decide on weather to use EVA foam or something else for the rest.

The best place to ask would be the help thread, since ya know, its for questions? I wouldnt do that costume though man, theres so many complex curves in it youd shit yourself, especially if youre using EVA.

building on what this person said.
keep doing the white outlines on the 3d parts, but as for the 2d parts... I just wouldn't.
Also the outlines don't have to be white, especially on silver it can just look like the paint got chipped off. You can just put a light grey and it looks even better.

More progress!

Just copying all this text from my fb post:
For the muzzle I used a piece of sintra heat molded around the barrel. To create the rounded area where the musket cleaner stick goes in, I inserted the dowel and then used Great Stuff (expanding foam) to fill in the pipe and then bondo to smooth it out.

To attach the stock I hand screwed two long screws in the end (slathered bondo over the foam to have a stronger material for the screws to grip onto) then inserted it into the pipes (like in the photo) and stuffed the opening with Great Stuff, then clamping it all in place. Will go over the seam with some bondo tomorrow.

Boot covers are foam cushions shaved down to shape (made in 3 pieces so I can bend my foot and my knee) and wrapped in the same flannel material as the dress. Just pinned right now!

That one is the clearest shot I have, aside from the ones my boyfriend took (which, as I said, really unflattering) and one from a photographer, but it's more "artsy" and doesn't show the full costume.

Finished the sword. First time making one let alone any sort of weapon.Gonna throw on a coat of gloss. Nothing super crazy but want to separate it from the dull appearance on the handle. I added the detail straps around the handle/hilt since it was kind of wobbly. Not bad but enough to make me paranoid. Not gonna lie this tested my patience on so many levels. I started to really lose the patience yesterday. I'm glad i'm getting to the point of finishing this. I learned quite a lot on this piece. I know it's not the best by any stretch of the imagination. I think you should just look at weathering techniques for this. If you decide on EVA- totally doable for all this BTW - you want to slice bits off in realistic ways, burn in sliding dents and scratches, then use diluted washes and/or dry brushed metallics to show off the physical textures.

The only modification I made is I cut it a size bigger and then added 6" to the side seams on the front & back to make sure there was lots of poof!

Also, to make sure the shorts kept their shape, there's 3 layers: 2 fleece, with buckram in between. I basted the layers together before I started sewing the shorts.

I hope this helps!

Somewhat in between new-work and patching up stuff. I'm adding the missing armour pieces to my Toku-inspired costume since I didn't have much time to make those pieces initially because of a deadline.
However, parts of the armour have been damaged (i.e. layers of gesso - spray primer - colour spraypaint - top coat have been scattered of it), so now I'm fixing it by redoing the same old steps but with extra more layers.
They're now patched up with layers of gesso, but I've recently stumbled upon this awesome thing called Plasti-Dip, but I don't know if I can still use it on this costume. I really want to and if not, wanna know an alternative option to make the paint layers stick to the costume and not getting shredded or scattered off during a convention.
