Can we discuss asking for donations to fund projects?

These have popped up like no tomorrow and it's getting agitating watching people who are having problems paying bills to constantly spend money on a hobby they are obsessed with.

>> No.7704476

This is irritating as hell. If you can't afford food or rent or medical care, maybe you should cut back on your hobbies? It's just annoying when I see people I know begging for money on the internet, and then proceeding to take huge trips to expensive as hell cons. And don't even get me started on people who ask for donations "just because"

One of my former classmates constantly begs people for donations and to commission her because "she has no income and is struggling to pay rent and other living expenses" yet she still went to Anime Expo and is planning on going to Otakon. We live in Canada.

Very much so. But it seems to be a bad thing to call someone out, telling them they should be focusing on their bills first. They person lost their apartment and Car before finally relying on their Fiancee to pay for everything

I know this person. She constantly lies about everything she dose and can't even provide a dime for her own children. The fact she's trying to raise funds to start a Cosplay company to do charity work is a sad cover of what she's really trying to do. Witch is fund her obsession.

Usually from what I've seen, it's from passersby on the site. There's always a couple of people who just donate $5 to everyone, regardless of cause just to help out.

In general, when did this begging culture become okay?

I've seen cosplayers get 1,000 dollars for "costume funds" when they complained the week earlier that they couldn't pay their bills.

Begging for money to fund your hobby sounds pathetic. I won't give a scent to someone for their costumes.

You either can afford this hobby, or you can't. If you can't, you need to go get a fucking job, save up, and try again when you're able to balance a stable life with dressing up like cartoon characters.

>When I had rent problems I couldn't even afford food that wasn't on discount. Going to a con was out of the question.
This. If you can't afford food, it's time to refocus your priorities or ask for help from family the way normal people have to.

I think what bothers me most is that people are comfortable taking hand-outs and still manage to have any pride at all.

>> No.7704689

I just saw this one last month

>Girl complains that she cannot afford her rent or food.
>Claims her car is stolen and she is now broke
>HAS to go to AnimeExpo
>Receives 800+ dollars via donations
>Posts picture of her fridge with about 100 jello shots in it
>Goes to AnimeExpo
>Magically the car is returned

I wish I could remember the cosplayers name but it was clearly just some 'party girl' who wanted to have fun on someone else's dime.

It's not too hard to believe, since most of the con expenses can be paid ahead of time.

Still, it is stupid, and I would never give money to someone like that. If you can't budget enough to plan for a common, regular bill, you have problems.
