This is irritating as hell. If you can't afford food or rent or medical care, maybe you should cut back on your hobbies? It's just annoying when I see people I know begging for money on the internet, and then proceeding to take huge trips to expensive as hell cons. And don't even get me started on people who ask for donations "just because"

One of my former classmates constantly begs people for donations and to commission her because "she has no income and is struggling to pay rent and other living expenses" yet she still went to Anime Expo and is planning on going to Otakon. We live in Canada.

Very much so. But it seems to be a bad thing to call someone out, telling them they should be focusing on their bills first. They person lost their apartment and Car before finally relying on their Fiancee to pay for everything

I know this person. She constantly lies about everything she dose and can't even provide a dime for her own children. The fact she's trying to raise funds to start a Cosplay company to do charity work is a sad cover of what she's really trying to do. Witch is fund her obsession.

Does anyone actually even donate to these people? I sure as hell never have.

Usually from what I've seen, it's from passersby on the site. There's always a couple of people who just donate $5 to everyone, regardless of cause just to help out.
Why they would waste their money on people like this, who knows.

I follow this one person on tumblr who makes these huge dramatic posts about some huge catastrophe in their life asking for money about every other month. I'm starting to believe that they're making this stuff.

If they say they can't afford rent and then goes to con then I automatically assume they are lying about their rent. Or are stupid as hell. Usually both.

When I had rent problems I couldn't even afford food that wasn't on discount. Going to a con was out of the question.

I've seen cosplayers get 1,000 dollars for "costume funds" when they complained the week earlier that they couldn't pay their bills.

Begging for money to fund your hobby sounds pathetic. I won't give a scent to someone for their costumes.

You either can afford this hobby, or you can't. If you can't, you need to go get a fucking job, save up, and try again when you're able to balance a stable life with dressing up like cartoon characters.

This. If you can't afford food, it's time to refocus your priorities or ask for help from family the way normal people have to.

I think what bothers me most is that people are comfortable taking hand-outs and still manage to have any pride at all.

Like I said, I live in her town and i was frequently going to Joann's in June. When her car was supposed stolen. She posted pictures of her car and I saw it in the parking lot whenever she was working. I sent her an ask on tumblr after I talked to her once about her car. She never answered it, blocked me on a bunch of different sites and makes it really obvious shes avoiding me whenever I go in Joann's.
