Hi /cgl/! I'm a newcomer to the cosplay world, so far I've done two costumes and gone to four conventions. I'm enjoying it a lot but I've noticed my photos don't get any attention (even though I'm not a hambeast and my boyfriend has been helping with props so they don't look like shit). Obviously I'm still a beginner but it's my goal to one day be a well-known cosplayer!

I wanted to ask: how do I get noticed? Is there a specific way to build a fanbase or earn a place in the community, or get seen by companies/scouts? I know how JNig and Yaya got started, but how did cosplayers like Monika Lee, Riddle, Katie, and other HoC stars get to the top?

If you are doing this to get famous stop doing it. Stop it. Just fucking stop it.

I just want cosplay to go back to be about meeting people who like the same shit you like and not about stupid whores wanting fifteen minutes of attention.

Volunteer at a hospital and get attention from needy patients, or volunteer at an animal shelter and get attention from pets in need. Do something because you genuinely love it, not just you loving the way having a thousand cocks up your ass makes you feel.

I'm not doing it JUST for attention, but I'm proud of my work and I gave myself the goal of being an elite cosplayer. I know I'll need the craftsmanship skills to get there but the rest of it, the social media stuff and how to get my name out there, it confuses me because it seems like a "lightning strikes" happening of things going viral but if /cgl/ has any advice on how to make that happen, I'm curious to know!

I'm a guy... so no. Can only female cosplayers be cosplay famous? I'd never heard of the HoC guys before that show so I'm worried I'll never reach that level since I can't exactly do a sexy Pikachu or a genderbent AssCreed costume to use the "sex sells" technique.

>> No.7702411

If you're in it just to be e-famous then you're doing it for the wrong reasons. Cosplay is supposed to be an expression of fandom and being part of a community, not to use conventions to be the princess of instagram.

With that said, if you want to get noticed, being sexy is your best bet. The simplest route to popularity is exposed skin and having a hot body with a nice rack. The mainstream cares more about how you look then about how great your costume is. All of the cosplayers you named got known by posting hot pictures to their facebook, deviantart, etc.

Also, you have to promote yourself. Put out content on a regular basis, go to as many cons as possible, participate in contests, make your presence known in the community on social media, twitter, etc. Put out stuff that impresses people and then keep the hype engine going.

You also have to be able to assess yourself realistically and know your weaknesses. A lot of girls, frankly, don't have the looks to be an admired female cosplayer but falsely believe they can brute force it. If your body isn't beautiful or your face is kind of less than ideal, learn proper makeup techniques/photoshop and hit the gym. Otherwise you're just going to be another pixyteri.

This.

As shallow as it might be, T & A is what gets you e-famous for cosplay. Jessica Nigri became famous solely for this and even Yaya Han, who has been cosplaying seriously since the 90s, didn't really get noticed until a few yeas ago when she got her double Ds and flaunted them in costume.

>I have a boyfriend
Not anymore. From now on, your relationship status is based off of rumors only. Never go into photoshoots with your boyfriend so that people are under the assumption that your single.
>Sexualize your outfits
Cosplaying someone who isn't generally sexy? Too bad, now they're sexy. Cosplaying an already sexualized character? Not enough, sexualize them even more.
>Body
If you don't have big boobs now, get them. Also make sure you're really damn photogenic.
>Why are you cosplaying?
From now on you are cosplaying because you want to "inspire girls everywhere to be confident in their bodies". Also, take a picture with a male weeaboo every now and then to make yourself not seem too picky.
>Social Media
Make a Tumblr, Facebook, Twitter, etc based solely around your own cosplays and then advertise them directly and indirectly everywhere. Also, get in every photoshoot you can possibly do. If you're at a convention and there's some big event going down, make sure you somehow get center stage.
>Tumblr
By the way, you're now a huge feminist. A hugely vague feminist too. Also, familiarize yourself with Tumblr terminology so you can appease the psychotic SJWs and keep them from attacking you like the crazy bitches they are.

How are your dick sucking skills? That is the best way to get cosfamous.

You have to go fast, but not too fast. You should use a lot of saliva, but be careful about making too much noise.

More than anything, be willing to suck all manner of dick, no matter how clean or dirty, no matter the location, and no matter what your boyfriend says.

Once you've got your foot in the door, you can switch to a more dignified taking it up the ass.

People keep saying "sex sells" but new cosplayers wearing bikinis to chase efame are a dime a dozen, they can't all be famous. It's just bitter jellyfats trying to justify why they'll never be efamous and why they're so much better than other people in animu costumes.
Anyway, here are my tips:
-wear sexy costumes, but make them actually look good. Don't do a whole bunch of "sexy genderbend Thor" and "swimsuit Sonico" but do do them occasionally.
-Cosplay a lot of flavor of the month, but occasionally throw in something "old school" but still popular to show your "cred"
-When you do flavor of the month cosplay, aim to be THE VERY BEST not just another generic school uniform Ryuko or whatever the FotM is.
-Buy facebook likes, but only buy a few hundred at a time so it's less obvious
-Make tutorials or youtube videos
-It really helps if you get involved in a controversy, but in a way that makes you not look like an asshole. But even if you do, hope that you'll at least have some defenders.
-Get photoshoots with top photographers
-Get a boob job

I can't believe I'm actually giving advice on this. What's wrong with me.

Anyhow, as a guy cosplayer, you're going to have to accept first and foremost that you will never be as famous as those you mentioned, but I think the thread has made that clear. The most you can hope for is having a strong internet fanbase who will leave you comments and being well known at your local cons.

Moving on, you said you have a boyfriend in your first post, stop that. That entirely eliminates your fan base. Dudes won't want to be bro-fans and girls won't like you because they know they don't have a chance. You don't have to change your lifestyle at all, in fact you can even post something about gay rights, but as >>7702431
said, your relationship status as well as your orientation is now just a rumor.

Go to every convention in your area, make one costume for each one. By the end of the year you should have a respectable closet of costumes. Get to know people there and eventually you will make a whole new circle of friend/contacts.

There's two types of cosplayers, the ones that are moderately skilled and are very attractive, know how to pose and photograph well (Okageo, Elffi, Liui Aquino) and then there's the kind that aren't ugly, but their skill is outstanding and that's what shows.. (J.Hart Design, Voplin, Johnny N' Junkers). I named all guys, so look them up. Figure out which one you are and work ONLY that angle.

Lastly, when you get fans know how to work and keep them. Post progress, post selfies, but not progress selfies, especially ones with faces. If people have seen you in costume 80 times while making it, the final picture of the finished product is going to not be received well. You can post maybe one or two progress selfies, but don’t ever post costests on your social media. Post them here anonymously so you can get brutally honest con-crit.

And um, that’s it. Good luck I guess, just don’t try to make a career out of it.

Get good quality pictures. Preferably from those sexy costumes. With nice background and good posing, so when people google your name those will appeayr.

>> No.7702719

>>7702655
All this is actually pretty accurate. If you're attractive and follow most of these steps, you could gain a decent following. If you're unattractive and follow all of these steps to the T, you won't get anywhere. And I'm not even saying you have to be hot. Just somewhat attractive. Animia is a good example of a cosplayer who followed all of these steps and gained a huge following, despite being an average looking girl at best.

Relevant copypasta describing how Jessica Nigri got famous:

Cosplay popularity is based primarily on how well you can market yourself. That's why there are so many girls that look better than Jnig but aren't as popular.

Girls take note of Jessica Nigri's example: She got in the game at the perfect time (back when facebook was just starting to gain momentum) and knew how to capitalize on the people she met via her short burst of popularity from SDCC '09. She self-posted on 4chan frequently and used the nerd blogs that posted her pikachu pics to promote herself when she released new photos. Then she used her small but loyal fanbase to flood the vote for the Lollipop Chainsaw sponsorship contest. Once she won that, she had all the networking possibilities she needed to continue gaining more ground in the scene. All of what I've just said can be proven by cross-referencing the content of the /cgl/ and /v/ archives, blogs like sankakucomplex and kotaku, and the testimonies of people who know her and have watched this happen. I also have a suspicion that she was one of the first to buy facebook likes (so no one noticed or questioned it because she already had so many more than other cosplayers) but no proof to back that up.

Tl;dr - if you want cosplay popularity you don't need to be more than a 6/10 as long as you do the following:
- create the illusion of mainstream hotness with copious amounts of makeup
- be thin and get implants
- market thyself

It will be very hard to surpass her until someone else finds "the next big social media site" and commandeers it right as it's gaining popularity, ala facebook. I believe that will be very unlikely as facebook has established itself as the top dog and she rode that wave better than anyone else could at the time.

>> No.7702756

As a dude, you will never reach e-fame level of one of the girls, even if your costume is amazing, and you whore out on tumblr/twitter/fb.

Or at least, you cannot subsist on cosplay alone.

My advice? As a guy (I am assuming gay guy, since you said you had a boyfriend), you are going to need to be known as something "else" besides just a cosplayer. Perhaps a dancer, or a singer, or something like that. Have a secondary skill that you do while in the costume that gets people's attention and screams "I'm an attention whore, look at me!"

Don't feel bad about that last part. That is what you need, if you want to get some fame. You can't be afraid to bug people.

Next tip: Take your gay relationship status and toss that shit right back in the closet. If you are "known" to be gay, girls won't line up to lick your abs or ask you to sign boobs or ask for prints (aka won't be willing to shill out dollars) because your are already off the table, as it were. Keep your sex ambiguous, or just say "bi" to keep the girls excited. Don't kill your marketability.

Also just an FYI, "e-fame" cosplay is the worst fucking reason to cosplay, and I'd ignore your ass in a heartbeat if I could at a con, you attention whore.

But if you are going to try and get e-fame, at least do that shit right with my above advice.

To become a "famous" cosplayer, you need to have the looks, and body to be able to pull it off. If you aren't physically attractive and don't have the body, your chances of becoming a successful commercial cosplayer is zero.

Looks and body type are everything in commercial cosplay. If you are male, you're gonna have to settle cosplaying as famous bishounen from some series with very revealing attire to attract shallow girls who only evaluate others based on their physcial attractiveness.

If you are female, you're going to need to "cosplay" in the most revealing outfit you can get to appease shallow guys who also evaluate others based on their physical aspects. Tits and ass are everything in commercial cosplay. Don't have those things and you won't be able to get anyone's attention.

I'd suggest you withdraw from this ambitions. There is nothing worthwhile about it. I wouldn't degrade myself like that if I were you. Even if you have the looks, don't do it, it ain't worth your time or effort.

If you're a guy, here's what I would do.
-Get on tumblr, in addition to all other relevant social media (facebook, da)
-Cosplay fujobait and get some of your guys in on it. I'm talking Free!, WTNV,
-Do gratuitous fujobait photoshoots (kissing not necessary but fanservice is good)
-Suck up to your fujoshit fans
-Occasionally reblog posts about feminism and maybe even fat acceptance
-At cons, lightly flirt with your fujoshit fans
-Win over guy cosplayers by making awesome pieces of armor (if you can) or anything technically adept
-win over /cgl/ anons by posting helpful advice and not being a dick
-win over Facebook guys and gals by posting selfies about doing everyday stuff, but not being a dick (ie don't post a whole bunch of /fit/ stuff)
You will probably want to do sexy costumes but also balance it out with technically advanced costumes, good representations of popular characters, and a little old school mixed in
You will also want to do flavor of the month stuff like others have said above.

There's another route, and that's picking a character and representing yourself _as_ the character. Not like some otherkin shit, but just a character that you look like, cosplay regularly and talk about a lot.
I.e. therealichigo, hot IRL Link, probably some others I forget
You could also just do multiple costumes from one particular franchise, and market yourself as "the Assassin's Creed guy" or whatever
Then you can use this as a jumping off to other costumes.
One problem I see with guy cosplayers is that they suck at branding themselves. They get one popular costume but people stop following them. Volpin branded himself very very well. He's probably one of the only guys to do that.

Hey guys, I could use some advice on how to promote my photos and costumes better too.
I cosplay mostly from Sailor Moon, and most of my costumes are pretty good and I get decent photography. I also pull off Usagi's hair really well, and have done most of her costumes. Whenever I put out new photos they usually get some good attention, but it stops there. I think I do shoots way too few and far between and people forget about me. I've had people in the past assume that I had a lot of DA or Tumblr followers because of my cosplayers and they're always surprised to find out I barely have any.
I'd like some better ways to promote my Sailor Moon cosplays.. I have a bunch of SM merchandise and plan to get more, so I was thinking about doing photos/selfies of me dressed up with some of my stuff and put on Tumblr, or something? I feel a little silly doing that, but I think it'd work pretty well.
Any other suggestions are appreciated. I don't *only* cosplay SM, it's just my main interest and I think I could work it a lot better than I am right now. Is there any way to promote old photos of mine? Or do I need to focus more on new work?

Well you hit the SM market at the right time but unfortunately you will probably get lost in a sea of other SM cosplayers. You will need to pump up your photoshoots so they stand out. Some of the most well known SM cosplay shots that stick out in my mind are those Japanese ones of the Uranus and Neptune at the beach. Go more extreme with a shoot location. Everyone is going to have random con shots. You might wanna see if there are any photogs in your area outside of cosplay that have great composition and reach out too them.

Also cosplay from fanart. (Not just the lol punk SM!) Make your costumes have more of a wow factor. I saw some good SM mucha inspired art floating around the other day. Copy those and be really pretty/atherial add flower crowns. OR go more gritty. Maybe a battle damaged Usagi with cuts and bruises in fighting posses. Play up the GIRL POWER image.

I think sometimes artist can add more to a design and it looks lovely and has more of a wow factor then the original. It also can make it more complicated and fun to make. Like the historical Disney princesses for example. Ppl can cry about it all they want but I think cosplaying fanart and adding a bit more to an original design can be really nice if you have an eye for design. Right there with you. I've been doing this since '97 and watching it devolve into high school popularity contest part II is maddening.

I want to talk to fans and be able to spot them by them putting time and effort into a costume they are wearing.
and I can't fucking do that anymore.

When I started nearly everyone was older than me at 21-25 and socially developed enough to speak to all types of people. Now the average congoer is 16 and balk at speaking to someone not their age.

One of the key essentials of becoming cosplay famous is to keep yourself on the surface. You should be everywhere. Get a twitter, follow every cosplayer you know, compliment them every chance you get no matter how shitty they are.

Constantly tweet something, make updates, even though you don't have anything to say. It can just be a pointless message like "I'm watching the latest episode of ___, I really want to cosplay ___!"* or "I really love ice cream! Does anyone of you love ice cream?". Just make sure you're on all the time.
*Posts like this are mandatory. Even if you have no intentions to cosplay from certain series, just include their characters to your "to-do" posts if they're popular.

Kiss a lot of ass. People will like the one who compliments their costumes and personality. Ass-kissing is one of the most effective ways of becoming famous. Eventually you'll get connections so you'll have the best photographers, best cosplay groups and good relations with contest judges.

Make a facebook cosplay page and a worldcosplay account. Like&Follow every other cosplayer you come across and remember to compliment them. Every time they post something, be sure to like their update. Commenting isn't necessary because sometimes it can make you look desperate.

When you finally get close to people, open the shit faucet. Talk shit about everyone, but try to keep it subtle.

If you get called out for being a drama bitch, just accuse of people bullying you and make a whole lot of updates about how "thanks to certain people" you're depressed and sick of all these rumors and lies they're spreading. Defend everything you do and try to turn it so that your enemies will become the wrong-doers, not you. I made a non-canon sexy costume version of a male character, you criticizing the poor construction and lazy design of my costume is sexist and shaming! Why is that the cosplay community is full of bullies?!

And last but not least, kill yourself.

I should continue this, because I forgot a couple of things to do.

Always and I mean ALWAYS take couple photos with other (famous) cosplayers. And post them everywhere. Tag everyone in the photo. Even if you don't know them personally, the photos with famous cosplayers are important. This will make you seem like a social, popular person who's included in the exclusive circle of famous cosplayers. Again, it doesn't matter at all if you don't actually know them, just act like you do. Namedropping is a good way to do this, just mention their names everywhere you can. e.g. "Had a great weekend at the con with @FamousCosplayer and @AwesomeCosplayer!! Thanks guys, it was great meeting you! <3" Even if you only butted in to talk with them in the bathroom line. If they reply to you, retweet their replies so everyone can see how close you are!

Of course, pick only popular or very attractive characters. It doesn't matter if you've never seen the show or only skipped through it to get the gist of it. Hell, even reading the wikipedia site is good enough. But in general it doesn't matter, just do the damn costume and post your plans to facebook with some fluffy paragraph such as "This character is really dear to me and I relate to her a lot because she's so _____ ! I love characters like this a lot and her design is just so perfect!". Keep it vague, you don't want to give away the fact you have no idea what the character is like. If someone confronts you about it, just throw a fit about how they're shaming you and not everyone can know the "every last detail about a character gah I'm not a NERD this is really offensive everyone should be able to cosplay anyone they want to!!!".

Writing this only made me realize how many people like this I know. Fuck.

Becoming Cosplay Famous.

Practically no one is cosplay famous because of who they are or they're skills. Let's not kid ourselves and just admit that all the 'fame' is borrowed off of popular fandoms and sexuality.

In artistic spaces the easiest ways to get noticed are to either specialise in a popular fandom whether it's drawing Naruto doujinshi in a style the spit of the original or being that Demyx from Demyx Time (dated anology I know) or sexuality. Capitalising on skin.

But you could have your tits out and no one will notice. Despite hashtag and tagging systems you're still only available in a search capacity for about 10 seconds. This is where the lightning strike comes in and why it's so important. You don't get noticed otherwise.

In order to get noticed you have to rigorously self promote yourself. Post on forums, post on groups, post on anything you can get your hands on. Try not to dilute your page with too much share for share stuff.

Or get the lightning strike of being endorsed by someone or something that is vastly more popular than you. This can go one of to ways.

Either you hit the jackpot and your the next Jessica Nigri over night.

Or your shared by someone like Jessica Nigri and you get a hored of protective fans telling you how little you are by comparison to their god.

But don't ever kid yourself. Cosplay fame is borrowed fame. It doesn't matter how nice you are or how skilled you are. And honestly it doesn't even matter how attractive you are as long as your passable for skinny cause there's enough taste in the world for you to cater to a decent portion of it if you can only get it's attention.

If you want it you just have to keep promoting yourself and putting yourself out there until it hits.

Or just give up.

There's no shortcut.

Should also point out that with everyone having their own page and no one wanting to support anyone else because they just want people to adore them.....there's no one left to be your fans anon.

OP if this is a serious post, then you need several things. first of all from the words of a wise man on the internet "advertise like shameless whores" Obviously where appropriate. like cosplay forums, or places where it's relevant. like the forums to whatever fandom you are cosplaying from, go there "hey guys i'm doing a costume of (insert character here) and here's some pics! what do you all think?"
Get good. like, your skills, sewing, crafting, etc

Do what you can to meet many people. Regular people, industry people, VA's, artists. Get to really know A LOT of people. Maybe have some business cards. nothing in particular on them, maybe your name, email. general contact information, twitter, etc etc etc
Gotta work on your body too, "hey it's great you put all that effort into that armor thing, but your gut is hanging out of it. fix that."

And now after all of this, HOPE. have hope that you made a good impression with ALLLL of this. and maybe you'll start to get followers. but, you can't just stop once you've done it. it's a constant up hill battle. till suddenly you realize one of two things either "this isn't working" or "yess! i've done it!"

This is al good gold, thanks for the incite. Gl to OP but I agree with everyone that you should do it because its your passion and not to be famous. Its just like people who follow careers just because it will make them money and not because they love it.

Here's where I'm at:

I've been cosplaying for about 6 yrs, started out as most (closet cosplay, making a few easy items) but I eventually went to school for fashion. My cosplay became good enough to have a small fan base. I briefly took up commissioning but after a lot of cheap and insulting inquiries (not wanting to pay the price for my time and work) took a break from sewing all together for about a year. I learned that without sewing my life was so drab and boring. I'm now back to cosplay with a fresh outlook and ready to get back into the game. Along my way I've made friends with some popular cosplayers and online personallities with larger following so I'm doing some collaborative work. I've also been hitting the gym and its paying off in all the right places (my dds have not been change lol). So far I'm feeling lucky but we'll see what the future holds :)

This. Also get a twitter/fb page and update the Twitter several times daily. JNig must do this shit as a profession or something, she literally spends her time grabbing attention on social media. She made the FB page thing what it is.

I disagree with anon about FotM having to be the best. Sometimes that is true like with Monika or Riddle (much as I hate to admit it they have some talent, though Monika thinks WAY too highly of her abilities). But in other cases like JNig you don't have to be the best. Just get a legion of pathetic fanboys thinking you're the best and it solves the problem.

I think OP is a troll though honestly, at least I want to believe they are. I really hate that the cosplay community has exploded with so many shit tier cosplayers looking for efame. I miss the good old days when people cosplayed mostly from stuff they genuinely loved. It has always been about attention, I just miss the quality. Then again, with all the amazing wig sellers and materials that weren't on the scene 10 years ago shit is looking nicer and nicer when people actually do put in the effort.
