Can we have another kimono and kitsuke thread? The last one was really awesome, and its nice to see more anons interested in kitsuke stuff!

Also is anyone able to register for Immortal Geisha? Apparently all registrations have to be manually approved, and its already been 3 weeks with no approval, no response to emails.

Dang I like this neo-Meiji style !

I have a question about maiko kitsuke. I wanted to try maiko henshin because I bought a wonderful odori obi for a bargain so I might as well try to use it. What should I aim for ? I was thinking about New Year style's 'kurotomesode' uchikake and stuff but I must admit that even if I'm pretty ok with regular kitsuke, maiko kitsuke's still a great mistery for me, especially the whole kanashi and hair part.

A rule of thumb with Yukata is that what makes it a Yukata is the fabric. Use only cotton printed fabrics, if the print is WOVEN IN it counts as a casual/work kimono, not a yukata. The yukata I made was from cotton from Joanns and when I compare it to the cotton from my yukata imported from Japan, the Japanese one is thinner and also feels stiffer. Just a thought to consider there!

It's definitely not perfect but I did try to be as accurate as possible (I'm the one who asked about the differences between men's/women's yukata in the last thread). I used a lot of the resources mentioned in >>7683286 but didn't actually purchase a pattern, just drafted out each of the rectangular pieces based on my own measurements. I could've added a little more overlap (I factored in 10" not including seam/hem allowance).

The sleeves are going to be more problematical than the body length, especially if it's a furisode or retro style with longer sleeves. Consider some kind of long-sleeved blouse underneath instead of a juban (a la Nozomu Itoshiki), or lace trim at your juban sleeve openings to give you extra length, or long gloves.

I have the misfortune to be a 175cm kitsuke enthusiast. Too-short sleeves are the bane of my goddamn existence.

Actually there are a few other obi types also acceptable for yukata besides hanhaba: tsuke obi are very common with yukata because they're so easy to use, and a very simple/informal nagoya obi can also be acceptable, especially if the yukata is of a dressy type. Hanhaba and tsuke obi are the better and safer choice though because wearing too formal obi with yukata looks a bit funny.

There has been a recent resurgence in interest for kimono culture for young people, I think partially due to social/meetup clubs like "Kimono De-Jack" where people dress up in kimono and go do things together. It's also a very accessible fashion to take up, since vintage kimono can be purchased on the cheap at flea markets (if you're just breaking into a collection and aren't looking into buying brand new or couture pieces). A lot of young people think it's kind of hipster-ish, as far as I can tell.

They are designed to make the body look rectangular and completely non-sexual. The focus then is all on the neck and face, hence why for Japanese (maybe not in today's modern times) the nape of the neck is very sexual. It makes sense when you consider Japan is a very modest society. Think Victorian times and showing ankles.

Tsunetsuki/stalker is a good example too. I was going to ask about this too, being a tallfag. Tried on a retro yabane in purple and silver and love it but its about 3-4" too short. I'll see if I can make this work. Tall boots sound more tolerable than my gets.
