Ugh, kill me. That lettering was horrific to find let alone make something out of it. I'm sure it's still not 100% accurate. I was thinking of doing some very small gold touches to the outsides of the lettering, almost like a small shadow. Thoughts on this? I think im going to save weathering this for when im completely done. Pants are all good to go, just have the detail stitching on the sides. Should be ordering the leather this week for the sandals/wrists/headband. I hope to god this turns out like i want it to. So far i'm feeling pretty proud of it.

Progress on Nausicaa's rifle! Pretty much finished one side and now bondoing the other side (waiting for it to cure at the moment). Bondo is some mean fucking stuff though, the fumes make me dizzy even with a mask and fan blowing the fumes out the shop door.

My process is the same as Punished Props', basically screwed 2 PVC pipes together and using bondo to fill in the valley between them. Using spot putty and filler primer spray with 400 grit sandpaper to finish it off. Will probably wet sand it before painting.

Also scored 5 yards of 60 wide light grey flannel at a discount fabric store for $9.50! Its the perfect texture and weight for her dress (in fact there is a description of her dress in the manga saying it is made out of felt), and came out the perfect shade of blue after combining teal and evening blue rit dye.

Currently working on my Red cosplay. It's nothing super fancy at all, but i'm getting little figures to go into the pokeballs. Venusaur is proving to be a HUGE PAIN IN MY ASS. But blastoise was ezpz. Still looking for a Chaziard, Espeon and Snorlax that are small enough, and not overpriced.

And i'm gonna pick up some rare earth magnets tomorrow and see if they'll pull through belt fabric. If they do, i'll use them to hold my pokeballs into place. I hate using string, wire and velcro, so I hope it works.

I don't know what to call it but its a female threaded metal piece with a flat base that you can screw into the square wood base. I then used a threaded adaptor that fit in the threaded metal piece in the base on a PVC pipe to screw it in. I can take a picture of the base of that helps? I am going to get a stronger pipe and/or metal rod to feed through it so it doesn't bend so much.

Debated on whether or not to post this as the work I did on this had a huge head start. that being, I purchased the design and printed it on the fabric and had it shipped out to me and then sewed it up. So all the heavy lifting of designing the pattern, laying it out, etc, was all done before it ever got to me. I just pieced it together.
Then I made the eyes, glued rubber soles to the feet and made a crappy little web-backpack to carry my stuff around in. I also made a face shell, but wearing it causes a lot of discomfort, and a strong feeling of claustrophobia, so until I can get one that doesn't make me feel sick, I'll be going without.

>> No.7664889

>>7664004
Your attention to detailing is great. You have some awesome panel line work on your suit. I am noticing two things that just look a tad off though.
1) hips are too small compaired, just by a hair, this can pretty much be ignored however if you take care of 2
2) The shoulder armor is too big, if this is is fixed and scaled down a tad I think the hips would look much more in line with the rest of the suit.
3) the sabers are super long. They should, Ideally never be taller than the head of the gundam, and unless you are doing a SD, they will be too long.

I cannot stress this enough though, you are doing an amazing job and it looks FANTASTIC. I know its a shitty amount of rework and if it were me I'd barrel through the rest of the suit and do revisions later. I sure as shit wouldn't blame you if you did the same. I just wanted to point those out to you before you got too far gone in it.

Insulation Foam board, a giant sheet [8x4ft] is 14$ at Lowe's.
Just look for tutorials on how to put everything together but it's really as simple as
> Cut basic shape
> Attach with caulking glue
> File and Sand
> Gesso
> Paint

We used it to make these tools for another cosplay, obviously it has its ascetic limits. Due to where you sandwich the board together. We are still experimenting with the medium to see all it can do!

That axe is pretty bad. It isn't shaped well and the foam texture is really obvious. With a piece that easy, he definitely should have used bondo over it to smooth it out. Bondo is cheap, sands well, and makes props more durable. The paint job isn't good either, you can see the silver coming up onto the wood.
Not bad if you're a beginner but it definitely needs some work.

Holy crap I saw this on the RPF and it is just looking great!. For the biceps the way I see it you have two options. 1 is to have them hollow and just hang from the shoulders, I did this with my GaoGaiGar. They can get damaged from knocking around in this setup though in my experience. Theadvantage is you can shrug out of them to move around a bit more freely and shrug back into them for photos. Option two, which I used for my Alt-Eisen and Gundam is to attach the biceps to your arm with Velcro but have the top part padded with foam to make it stick out more, this limits your mobility a bit more though the part is more secure.

Not much has changed since my last post (in the previous thread), but I started priming my puppy today. Tons and tons of rough spots that I might try and fix up with putty (coating with resin unfortunately didn't work out), but I think overall Takkun is coming out okay for a small Thursday/Sunday cosplay prop. Sorry for tiny picture.

Thanks for this! I didn't really notice all those things until you pointed them out, although the waist section looking small might just be the angle and/or lighting. It looks about right to me in the pic. The length of the sabers do bother me now that you mention it haha. I'll remake them if they still look too long once the head is complete. Same with the shoulders. I'm planning to remove some of the padding on my shoulders to make my head pop out more because when I put on the helmet my eyes were where the mouth vents should be x_x

Thanks! Your Alt looks amazing! I can't wait to see it in action. I was thinking of connecting the bicep and forearm with an elbow joint... Then having the whole thing strap to my arm instead of connect to the shoulders because I'm afraid anymore weight to the shoulders would make them droop. I really like your second method, I think I'll go with that.

I will also be at Dragoncon! If you see a novice-looking Nausicaa with a Howl in a similar state, thats me and my bf haha.

I don't think I'll be using flannel, though. Last year I almost fainted in my VLR Luna cosplay which was mostly cotton but layered and with a heavy wig. Hoping to avoid that this year.

While it would have been optimal, it was definitely not easier, I tried. Batik wax made a mess because the fabric is so textured, gutta didn't give a crisp line, Elmer's glue wouldn't wash out completely enough, and discharge paste produced neon yellow instead of white. The first time I made this costume the whole thing was done in an attempt at yuzen and it was a big fucking mess.
Sob. Someday I will go and study with John Marshall and produce satisfactorily dyed wafuku.

Yeah... I've tried using a nail file but its still not really working the best. I wonder if there is a dremel bit that would work well, I also thought about grinding the recesses out more and cutting styrene to shape and glueing those in.... hmmm... >> No.7672840

>>7672825
I would be careful with a dremel. They do have sanding wheels, but too much power or a slip up could cost you.
If there's a hobby shop nearby, they usually carry some kind of sanding sticks for tight corners. The sand paper wrapped around a pencil isn't a bad substitute either.

Ah, well, hmm... I've actually had some success with fabric markers lately (if you're careful, it looks dyed/printed, but you have a lot more control). It's such a big area that it's probably not exactly worth-while or efficient unless you could match them to a dye and only do sections in marker or something like that. It's definitely a lot easier when it's anything but white for the details. Anyway, good luck and sorry for the unhelpful suggestion.

Quick tip though: When working with foam, be sure to switch out your blades often. Foam will dull them really fast, and you'll end up with rough, and flaking edges. You can kind of see that on the lower art of your armor already, in the corner areas. Easy to fix though, just make sure you always have a very sharp blade on hand.

Experimenting with a modified push-light for terminal core's eye thing, I think it looks good so far but so far nothing is attached. I'm thinking of using Velcro in order to stick the light in (in case of a needed battery change) but is there any better method?

And my biggest issue is finding a way to get that orange film (it was a plastic walmart folder) to attach the the light without looking sloppy. I tried heat forming it and can't get it to melt/shape at all. I have more to cut to try different stuff, I just don't know what to do. Any suggestions are more than welcome.

I've been wanting to get this damn belt done for Wander from SoTC for a while now. I knew i wanted to do something for the dangling things on his belts and looked around to see what others had done as well as game footage. What i had read via game related stuff was that they were bones. A coworker of mine has some woods directly behind her house and had found a deer carcass. It had been rotting since january and she told me i could come take any bones i found. I walked away with 16 bones. My father in law helped me with the cleaning process since i had never done that before. I put them in a hydrogen peroxide bath for 3 days, pulled them out, and cleaned off any remaining tissue. It helped loosen and get rid of alot of the bad stuff and took down the odor by alot. I cleaned out the larger bucket i had them soaking in and put a new hydrogen peroxide mixture in. I'll be pulling the bones out tomorrow and letting em dry in the sun. I dont want the bones to look perfectly white since i'll be making my outfit dirty anyways.

i used this stuff called "delight", it's a super super lightweight paper clay. it kind of sucks price-wise, because it's like 10$ a pack (in fuckin canada at least) but it only takes half a pack to make one set of clips, and mine even came out a little too big

so yeah just take a chunk of that shit and scuplt out your forms as best as you can, i made the indentations where the black lines are by pressing the edge of a ruler into the clay. and this brand of paperclay receives moisture almost as well as ball clay, so you can dab your fingers in some water and smooth out your forms to reduce time on sanding. also make sure the sculpts are curved slightly so they sit on your head nicely. you can also press an indent on the bottom of them where the barrettes will sit so theyre not really visible

and yeah. sanding. so even if you smooth your pieces out with moisture they're gonna look lumpy and stupid once you're done so don't fight that too hard, you'll just be wasting time. once the sculpts are done give them at least 48 hours to dry and evaporate exterior moisture completely. then sand the fuck out of them with high grit sandpaper to make them smooth and lovely. then prime, sand again with even finer sandpaper, prime again and then paint. paint the black lines first and then mask messy edges with your white or red paint.

to attach the clips to your wig just strip a pair of barrette clips and hotglue the metal pieces to the clips.

annnnnnnd that's about it ! i recommend delight as your material just because it really is the lightest clay i've ever used and won't drag your wig down AT ALL

sorry for long, slightly unrelated to thread post, but i hope this helps anybody wanting to make these! pic related it's what the clips looked like before sanding. sanding is very important

Hi there! I use delight as well, and I wanted to say that while this is a good idea, your form is a bit messy. It's much easier to dry the rough clay, sand down and then use a wet q-tip to smooth it out afterwards, since paperclay is water soluble it will take moisture again after dry. It is also important to know that it is water soluble so it needs to be primed and sealed or it will melt when wet, even with paint on it.

I'm not saying yours are bad or anything, just that it will be easier for the other anon if she knows how to more easily do some things.

It's about the ratios; wire ⌀: ring ⌀ . There's a balance between flexibility and solidity that should be reached. Some people stick to thinner wire for weight, but you can also just switch to different metals.

For the love of god use Aluminum wire for cosplaying too, steel is heavy as shit.

3D printing is not cheating, why do people still think this? Its a method of fabrication just like anything else. Fucking Blind Squirrel makes amazing props and uses lots of 3D printing. Thinking that its "cheating" is purely a made-up pride thing that no one actually cares about.

I think a lot of people don't take into account the time it takes to make the models printable and the work to smooth and finish pieces. Admittedly I will be bitchy and call it cheating when you can download printable files and the quality of 3D printing doesn't take any finishing to get your omg perfect armor for everything, but we're not at that point yet.

I guess you're right. Still have no idea how I'll smooth it down but I guess I'll cross that bridge when it's fully printed and see if it looks good enough then.

Alright here's what you do. Use filling sandable primer (find in the Auto sections of Walmart/Auto Zone), I personally like Duplicolor brand but the Rustoleum one is cheaper and good too. Sand it down with 200-500 grit sandpaper, fill in dents or holes with Spot Putty.

Those three items will set you back like $15 and last you a long way.

>> No.7704917

>>7704758
I agree that 3D printing to totally viable for parts that are tiny and intricate and would take a lot of man hours and suffering to get right by hand. A good example is the Cardcaptor Sakura star wand's head, getting a perfect geometric star that will fit in a perfectly circular ring (that is thinner at the top and thicker at the bottom) would be REALLY hard to get with normal fabrication methods. I think 3D printing for things like that isn't a cheat but a time-saver and method of its own.

>> No.7704925

>>7704909
Sounds good. Should I do that after I've assembled the gun, or apply it to the individual pieces? And it goes primer > sanding > fill in dents/holes, right?

You can apparently gas most 3D printer plastics smooth with like mineral spirits or acetone or something, makes shit mirror smooth. The fumes melt the very outside layer. You probably lose some detail but shit looked great when I saw it demonstrated. Might wanna look into that?

I used precut rings for the sake of my own sanity, since the weave itself proved tedious enough for babies first chainmail. I'm an idiot though and used steel. Even though it's only a 3/4th length sleeve it weighs a ton, but luckily I BS'd a harnes out of pleather and it's surprisingly comfortable with little wieght drag.

tl;dr Fight the good fight anon, it's worth it.

Jake, you should smooth your models more. Up the polycount, arc linearization tolerance, however scad describes it. Less sanding later.
It will show up in your prints.. IMO you should look at the Z step increment of your printer and make all edges on your model shorter than that.

This halo helmet commission is still looking super chaotic.

I just did the models, but 3d printing cost varies a lot. You can have shapeways do it (expensive) or if you have a friend with a printer you can just pay the materials' cost- ABS plastic filament gets down to around 10$/lb. I don't have great estimates on infill rates or actual density in front of me, but something like the Thorn pistol would probably still be at least be 50$ of plastic.

Theres another problem with using your friends printer. They usually have very small print volumes, which means you need to make it out of a number of prints and reassemble them.

If you wanted a one piece helmet you'd have to outsource it. A home printer has probably a 6x6x6 inch max print volume (maybe 8x8x8, but no greater then 1 foot). So you'd have to cut it into various pieces then print and assemble them.

My brother and I bought a reprap for my father for fathers day and I've been messing around with it and playing around with the idea of printing some things for costumes. It could be useful for some things, but foam or pepakura is probably still more economical then completely 3d printing armor.

Although some guy did Dark Knight Cecil from FF4 completely 3d printed if I recall.

It is.

The first thing you do if you want to make your own thing is draw up a design.
Then in my case since I'm either going to be using 3D printing or Pepakura I need a 3D model.

/3/ wouldn't help much because they're mostly for models and skins, not really for something you're going to need to be wary about detail or polygons-if that makes any sense.

I hope it holds together it looks pretty good. I don't know how much it would cost, but anodizing it mitebcool. I know there are places around here that anodize aluminum but I'm not sure how much it would cost. Definitely would ensure that the colour would hold pretty much forever.

Do you know what gauge of aluminum you're using?

It might be a good idea to layer some thicker gauge metal on the inside to reinforce it.

>> No.7707722

>>7707708
Not them but the way the aluminum is fluted at parts it should be completely fine. Any kind of ridge or curve adds to the structural strength of the armor. You're not going to go around bending aluminum willy-nilly unless its super thin, and based on the fingers, looks quite adequate.

>> No.7707735

>>7707722
It really just depends upon the metal they're using.

If it's aluminum you'd use for ventilation and stuff, just the slightest amount of weight will smash it.
Might even tear.

The thicker the gauge, the better.
However, the thicker the heavier.
So if they still just layer it with some hot glue or some shit (again, if it's just aluminum sheets like I think he's talking).

I agree.
In the way of metals, aluminum is pretty weak, but at the same time it's not very susceptible to breakage unless it's being bent back and forth over itself.
Even thin sheets of aluminum are pretty tough, and I doubt their going to be putting it through the kind of stress that would cause it to bend out of place.

Oh crud I realized I never replied to you, Wander-anon. Yep I used heat and bond applique! It was actually not that bad, I had drawn the design on a large sheet of paper, x-acto cut out the shapes, traced those on fabric, and then used the now stencil-ified large paper to line up where to iron on the shapes so it didn't get out of whack. I think it only took me like 2 hours tops? Though in my heart one day I will have enough money to commission a professional to weave me a tabard on a loom and display it on my wall. One day....

WIP on Nausicaa's helm from the manga.

Of course first time working with sintra I choose compound curves, naturally it was a bit of a nightmare to shape!

From left to right, top to bottom:
>Had to apply bondo to round out the middle since I couldn't stretch the sintra enough to make a nice dome shape
>Applying even more bondo to try and cover seams and general wonky shit
>Sanded down with dremel and sanding sponges/blocks
>Mocked up the filligree design in paper to see where to focus my energy since parts would be covered up
>Only photo I took in a long process of spot putty, filler primer, sand, repeat
>Sanded down with 320 and 400 grit and buffed, next step apoxie sculpt the details and then spot putty remaining dents that are uncovered

Hope to be done with this thing by Sunday!

After two weeks i'm fucking done. Legit deer bone that i pulled from a carcass and cleaned myself. I repainted them to look dirty since i will be following through with making the outfit more dirty. This was so time consuming but i feel like in the end, it was fucking worth it. I probably spent 20 hours on the whole belt between cleaning the bones/repainting/putting belt together. I wanted to do a little bit of artistic license with this since ongoing debate with the dangly shit was bones/candles/feathers. Felt like bones would make more sense. Used hemp cord to hold everything up and in. Pretty damn pleased with the final result.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean, I just follow the directions on the can haha. Its not that bad, it is pretty forgiving if you mess up the ratio of bondo to hardener a little bit. The consistency is like sticky peanut butter with a really short working time (like 5-6 mins) so its mostly for just slabbing it on in places, sanding, then adding more.
