As soon as I heard this con was originally named "Tumblcon" my immediate thoughts were that people should have seen it coming.

If someone is stupid enough to try and use a trademarked company name in their con name, they probably don't have the common sense to run a con in the first place.

And they broke rule 1 of running an anime convention: don't rely on the convention to pay for itself in your first year. Same thing that happened to LPU and a handful of other failed cons.

The way I heard it, this went down after the whole WE NEED 17K RIGHT NOW thing went down. Dashcon was begging all of their guests for assistance, plus people online like Neil Gaiman, etc, and this was after WTNV realized they'd be footing their own expenses after being promised that everything'd be comped. So it was pretty obvious DashCon didn't have any actual money for real.

After all that, they flashed a picture of a Paypal account balance at the WTNV guys on a flipphone swearing they had the money in the account and if they'd just wait they'd run to the bank and get it out, not realizing paypal money takes a while to come out. WTNV decided they'd had enough and left and ended up having to let another guest who's room was also not paid for by Dashcon sleep on their couch at an airbnb.

And then DashCon officials are putting the blame solely on WTNV. "If they'd just waited" "we had the money" and "They walked out on over 300 guests because one of them decided that being patient or trying to work with the DashCon staff was below them" - straight from the head of their Doctor Who committee.

So that's great.

I think they just wanted to get the hell out of there and it might not look good or turn into a good situation (not like it was a good one anyway), addressing the panel personally with admins and staff standing there/nearby may have turned everything into an awkward confrontation or awkward pity party ("everyone look, we have the money see!" "aw wtnv pwease stay"). Roxanne herself did come out to address the audience to say they walked but yeah I don't really know how there would've been any other outcome; it sucks that they did just walk out like that but I think it was probably the best decision and they did make a blog post/address it on twitter afterwards. I just thinking that them or even if they had a rep coming in to address people might've been a little more confrontational/drama-y than what the two dudes wanted. Um, you sure they weren't invited by SDCC? If so, then everything is paid for. Plus, it's not like you need tons and tons of cash to go to SDCC. If they were paying out of their own pocket it was probably money they had to use for Dashcon. Even if they're making "something", there's still costs to offset, unexpectedly (not in the budget) paying for Dashcon may have fucked with that. I don't really follow WTNV, I know they have fans but I don't think they have so many; I'm sure whatever they do make off the tour is enough to pay for transport, room, and food expenses and I'm sure anything else they have left over they probably try to put towards any WTNV related costs.

There's a reason Nightvale was a target for Dashcon. It's popularity has grown exponentially in the last couple years, and tumblr's played a big part on it. It's a cool and surreal podcast/radio program thing... and it's Homestuck-esque following is a blessing and curse.

They really didn't give their best, imo. Simply because they placed a lot of tasks on people who were either too young or inexperienced and then wondered why it went wrong. It is also the result of unrealistic expectations, poor organization and lack of resources. You can tell since the beginning that the convention was going to be shitty simply because the people organizing it were setting their personal interests before anything else, and having piss poor communication with the staff.

It's seriously lack of professionalism and organization to ask for money during the con, and then when shit goes wrong you blame everyone but yourself for your wrongdoings.
That is not giving your best. That's pretending you're the victim of all the shit you did wrong.

The worst part is that, when asked, they admitted no one have worked an event of this scale and nature.
When you're planning a con where you expect even more than 400 attendees, you get experienced people. ESPECIALLY if you have Hollywood-level guests planned.
A lot of clusterfuck could have been avoided if one person had an inkling of how to run a large scale event.

On that note, does anyone have solid proof that any of the BDSM panel rumors are true? I've seen so many arguments both for and against the claims being made, and now that DashCon has gone viral, people are exaggerating and making up stories just to stir shit up. So any help on this particular matter would be greatly appreciated!

Yeah, overall they didn't outright attack the staff or con or anything, just told the truth about how staff operated. It ended on a positive note, too; they said they would consider returning if the con improves before next year. But if they're uncomfortable I wouldn't demand for them to take any unnecessary risks (especially since they /do/ go into detail about Roxanne and her behavior has not struck me as particularly.... reasonable, for lack of a better word).

Hopefully the interview can be posted tomorrow. I'll keep you guys updated.

Right, have had a few people come forward off anon to say that they themselves were underage and got into the 18+ panels, or friends/relatives with them were able to do so. Which, let's be real, isn't exactly uncommon at fandom conventions (ex: underage drinking is insanely prevalent at WinCon, teens are running explicit fanfic panels, etc). But it's not exactly something that's going to make DashCon look better at this point in the game.

Anyway, thanks for the info on that particular front, you guys rock. Gonna try to get some sleep, hopefully the next development doesn't come out until at least 7 AM.
