It was basically this, on a much grander scale, without a ball pit.

The con itself was fine, until it was revealed that they couldn't afford it. They brought along a whopping 22 guests, none of which were paid. The con organizer upped and left halfway through, leaving it to the wolves. Cops came and kicked everyone else, people who had free rooms were charged.

It was just really poorly planned. There was a sudden surge of pony cons a year or two back that made everyone and their mother think they could run one themselves. The problem with that was, first year pony cons are lucky if they get 500 attendees but these kids were expecting a couple thou cause "OMC PONIES". With VAs like Tara Strong running around 10k to bring them out, any pony con that tried to bring out VAs rather than just community guests (artists, DJs, etc.) got hit pretty hard. LPU just handled that hit far more poorly than others.

Royalties only matter if someone is using your image or property to sell something. The WTNV would be eligible for royalties from the Dashcon DVD if they had actually gone through with it.

This sort of thing pisses me off. If you are prone to anxiety attacks, learn the warning signs. (Mine are a fixation on what upset me, pain in my chest, numbness in my arms and neck.) These "symptoms" usually allow me to remove myself from the issue to avoid an attack. I'm really sketchy about the whole WTNV/ball pit refund. If Dashcon gave attendees an extra hour in the ball pit as a refund for the cancelled panel on WTNV, they ought to file a complaint with the Attorney General in that state. Those folks affected should be a given a full refund not some consolation event. They need a refund. If something like this happened, I would be pissed because I don't want an extra hour in the ballpit, I want a refund.

I wouldn't know who they would have to file it with. If Dashcon is registered in Ohio, they may have to file the complaint to the Attorney General in Ohio which is Mike DeWine. Or they may have to file it with the Attorney General in Illinois. Someone should ask Masao as I don't have the law expertise he has.

The paper "proving" it is easily faked, and on top of that the letterhead would have Marriott somewhere because Marriott owns the hotel.

Did you read what I said? I explained why the hotel not knowing wasn't fishy. Your average hotel staffer is not going to know about what has or has not been paid, and if they don't know anything that's no indication that the hotel itself didn't do anything. More significantly, the hotel was completely in their rights to demand the money ahead of time, and it made sense for them to do so.

I will admit that the lack of the letterhead is fishy to me, but at the moment I'm seeing more reasons to believe them that the hotel demanded the money upfront than I am to believe this is some kind of elaborate con-con. I hadn't heard that 5 days ahead of time thing. In my opinion, this is all evidence enough for a trial, but I wouldn't convict them on it just yet, if you get my drift. If I'm remembering the vocabulary correctly, Dashcon has violated one of their agreements, and is trying to get out of it by offering as "compensation" something they were already offering. In contract law, something one is already receiving or has already received cannot be used as consideration in an agreement. Hell, the ball pit was fucking free, so it was already past consideration for the guests even if they never looked at the thing. No court of law in the country would find this suitable compensation, I guarantee it.

Yeah, most other fanart has a grey area leeway depending on the creators statements if any. We know Disney is an absolute not. What I can confirm was Nicole Oliver reprimanding the other VAs and show staff for giving out autographs on the side without the vouchers to get one. Also doing more then one autograph per voucher. Applebloom's VA/Michelle Creber had a nightmare sitting next to her during signings.

The other showstaff ended up okay and Unicon was as bad as it was financially as people thought it was, but it was very close. A certain rich guy picked-up the tab on show staff issues, but normal people did get fucked over on their rooms and such when they paid for those shitty packages.

From my understanding, the $17,000 is from them not understanding their contract where the money was due all on Friday. And they didn't have the money to even pay for it yet, because they were expecting to pay it as they made the money from ticket sales.

They booked a pretty big convention center too from what I saw, a big pricey one which is a big no-no for first time cons. Chances are, seeing as how they asked for the money in form of donations and shit, they're kids who don't understand that doing a con like this is a big gamble. They really should've gotten a loan to pay upfront and pay back the loan with what they made. But I doubt they understand what a loan is or could even get approved for one of that magnitude. Instead their entire plan from the get go was "get money from teens who can ask their parents for unlimited income and make bank."

I also think this entire thing is considered for profit too, so there's that... so I don't think it's a scam, I just think the con owners are stupid.
