Let's try something different this time:
The idea of a Homestuck cosplay masterpost has been thrown around for a while, but no one has ever compiled a bunch of stuff together. The only recent exciting stuff these threads have had was drama filled stories, though they were entertaining.

So, how about this? Let's give suggestions for various things. Links or suggestions for wigs, glasses, tutorials on paint and different methods of paint, same with horns, links to contacts... And it'd have to be up to at least one person, or hopefully more than one if a lot of people are contributing, to compile this all up and put it into a post, perhaps a pastebin or a Tumblr post. Homestuck cosplay help blogs have halted and even have outdated or broken links, and though blogs like CBC offer advice and tutorials, it'd help to have it all in one place.

The aim of this is to have a reference post so that if anything is needed, the masterpost can be referred to. Need Dirk glasses? Check what the post says. And what I'm requesting for this thread is for people to give their personal experiences. Find a good wig that works with a character? Know of an easy or inexpensive method of doing horns? Share your stories. There doesn't need to be one sole way of doing things either, the more suggestions the better.

What do you say?

Regardless, we can always discuss:
> Would you rather buy the triangular shades from an online store or make them yourself for a Dirk Strider/Bro Strider cosplay?
> Do buck teeth for the Prospit kids ever look good at all?
> What do you think of humanized cosplays of things like the Consorts, Denizens, or even the Planets themselves?

Nice idea, anon. Going to start with gray for bodies.

ARMSOCKS:
pros: easy to put on / remove, no smudging, look nice when made well, make once and reuse for many characters, warm for fall/winter cons/meetups

cons: can get wrinkled/puckered in photos, initial timesink to make and fit, can get dirty and stained, won't work with some characters because of the neckline

PAX

pros: waterproof, smugeproof, won't come off on costumes/accessories/other cosplayers (pic related), mixable to a perfect match with other makeup, lasts several days

cons: expensive, hard to apply to yourself, hard to remove quickly/completely, can cause cancer if you're using dollar store acrylic

BEN NYE:

(note: I personally don't have good luck with ben nye on my arms but ymmv)

pros: requires no additional makeup purchasing, easy to apply, quick to apply, relatively inexpensive, removes easily and quickly

cons: hard to get completely sealed, rubs off along hems/accessories even when sealed, has to be mixed for standard troll gray, not cost effective for large amounts of bare skin

tutorials: just use the classic ben nye tutorial, but powder it four times as much:

freckles tend to have a lot of color variation, so try black with varying shades of grey. there's also size, make sure they're not all equal-sized blobs. your best bet for natural looking freckles is to take a brush and just gently flick it onto your face to get proper size variation and properly random splatter. or, stipple sponges can have an alright effect, too, if you apply lightly. it can get a little chunky if you're not careful.

cadaver grey is basically the same color as mixed grey and white. it's a good troll grey without the mess of mixing and without the worry of off-color splotches because you can't mix every tiny bit of paint.

in my experience, pros and cons differ a lot depending on your skin type. my skin does a lot better with oil makeups than water-based. i learned a lesson about trying to use it on hands when i first got started in cosplay, though. never again.

Nah they meant how to get it to last on fingers (see: the post they were replying to when they asked, referring to someone that said it rubbed off fingers.) The answer is that there's really no good way; almost nothing stays on fingers for more than a few minutes. You can keep reapplying -- whether it looks weird afterwards kind of is up to luck and humidity -- but really the only foolproof method is shooping your fingers grey in rubbed off areas.
It happens. Only the nitpickiest nitpicker or someone who hasn't greyed up much themselves will consider some hand unevenness a minus on an otherwise evenly painted and well-done cosplay

Pic horribly, horribly related. It's not the best angle and the AR cosplay wasn't great to start with, but it's a good idea of how a morphsuit will do what it's supposed to do and stick. to. every. curve.

I like last anon's idea of making a slim-fitting suit of plating instead (with lights that blink down the length of your body!). You could use straight-leg paints and carefully-dangled red LED wires to hide your shape (again, assuming you're female bodied).

Being a UK homestuck Snazzaroo is the easiest paint to get here and almost everyone I've seen at cons/meets use it. I've actually had it on my face with contouring and powder for a whole day (8 am until 5 when I had a meal) without it budging at all.

This was on a very hot day (the 413 meet this year in london) spent mostly in the sun AND playing DDR on difficult in an arcade for 1-2 hours.

My paint stayed on perfectly, especially compared to the other people there, so I cant speak for all snazz users but this is what I do:

1. 1 Layer with sponge+ quite a bit of water
2. 1 layer with less water.
3. If any areas are patchy go over them again without adding any water to your previously damp sponge. I've found that in soft areas like under your eyes you can use your finger for this as well or a paintbrush.
4. Powder it with baby powder and a brush.
5. Contour with the darker grey and black mixed to your liking.
6. Powder again.
7. Add other make up (eyeliner etc)

You're done!

Also I wouldn't recommend this too much because it's really not what it's supposed to be used for but I always paint my lips with my gel eyeliner before going over the top of it with my black lipstick. It leaves a really clean line and stays there all day even if you drink or eat small things (not a whole meal or something that rubs all over your lip) I've just found it a lot more manageable than just lipstick and it hasn't done anything bad to my lips yet from what I can tell!

I own all three (anon who brought it up here) and so far the resin is slightly more expensive, but extremely sturdy and lightweight. I've reused the mold a couple of times too.

Karkat horns are cast, fantroll horns are paperclay, Sollux horns are MM. The Sollux horns pop off of that clip all the fucking time and chip at a moments notice and the fantroll horns feel almost squishy. And in the bottom right hand corner we see where the mold screwed up for that one horn and it's covered in pockmarks I need to fix.

if your horns feel squishy, you didn't let them dry long enough. paperclay is an airdry clay, it takes time to really solidify, but if you paint it too soom (like with model magic), it will never dry.

that might be the same issue with your sollux horns, if they weren't dry enough when you painted them and attached them, they'll never stay on well. it's a bitch and a half to get semi-wet MM to stick to anything with superglue and the touch of god, though if they're chipping instead of squishing, it might just be an issue with glue or the type of clip you used.

Air clay always cracks, it's a fact of the material. You have to add spackle or glue on top while you sand. If the entire thing was crumbling, you probably had too much clay or didn't mix the clay enough.

Resin looks great but it takes forever and a day.

okay, what do you guys think? would it be cute or just silly to buy accessories specifically for a cosplay if they were easily worn in day-to-day outfits?

i'm going to start porrim's ministrife coat soon and i was thinking of adding a few smaller accessories (purse, sunglasses, maybe some character-appropriate jewelry) but would it be too much?

>> No.7670195

>>7670162
using a foam core mainly has the advantage of being lighter-weight (depending on what kind you use and how thick it is). it can also provide a sturdier, less crumply core than foil unless you use something very porous like yaexrae's expanding foam method. it's also useful if you're mounting the horns with wire or screws, because with foam, you can insert and glue the wire or screw anchor fairly easily. tinfoil cores make it more difficult to do, though probably not impossible.

in general, there are pros and cons to every method of horn building, mostly it has to do with weight, durability, skill level, and ease of attachment.

This is exactly what makes people sometimes hate Model Magic from what I've found out. When I met a few people at a convention, they let me fix their horns for them and they were still squishy. I asked how long they let them dry and they said they had made them three days ago.

I've had to wait upwards of about 3 weeks for complete dryness with Model Magic in order to handle it/sand it/paint it or anything else but also because I slow dry to prevent cracks.

I tried paper clay once and it just felt really brittle and kind of heavy but I wouldn't mind trying it again just for the knowledge. I'd love to do Resin casting stuff since at least those would be more durable for probably the larger of the horn sets.

But yeah, if you're going to use MM, plan way ahead of time and be patient with it. If it cracks, fill it with super glue and hold it together for about 30 seconds then let it continue drying.

Anon who recommended Mohawkdandy's tutorial up above. It's basically the same as Yaexrae's tutorial as far as I can remember? But that method has been ace for all my medium sized horns and make a great base for basically any attachment method (I personally use a type of screws and screw hoses). I'll link it when I get to a computer.

>>7670078
What other anon said but I personally find it much easier to sculpt a good base out of foam. It's just made to shape in a way tinfoil isn't. Also I can keep sanding it down pretty far into the process if I notice things which are uneven.

I'd do lashline. dark waterline makes your eyes look smaller and you need to fix it all the time. You can use white on your waterline to make your eyes look bigger. Black waterline also tends to age your face so unless you're very babyfaced it's not a good thing when you'er trying to pass for a 13 year old.

I have really bad astigmatism too and cannot use contacts so IMO its fine, some things you just need to deal with and risking your eyes for cosplay is not worth it.

that would require homestuck to update again which i doubt will actually ever happen, and even then i dont think any more evidence is required. all the gt troll sprites in ministrife showed wings except theirs, and doomed gt karkat had no wings so its best to leave them out. tho i could see someone doing something interesting with it (deformed wings, 'mutant' theme or w/e but it would have to be well executed)

>> No.7673700

>>7672597
From what I've seen people think it was a mutation thing because some Vantas traits get carried over to humans - specifically their blood - and that's presumably because he was the one that created the human's universe in the first place with the frog (and fucked it up).

That is just speculation though.
I've seen a Karkat cosplayer with tiny wings hidden under his cape and that was pretty cute. It was a detail that was pretty hard to notice unless they showed it to you

>> No.7674109

>>7672597
Why bother making any extra details like that at all, by that logic? (Like embroidered sufferer capes and such.) I enjoy when people make small, plausible original additions to their costumes, esp if it's compliant with what we've already seen.

Karkat'll probably never have wings even in any future updates, so the "small hidden wings" idea is probably not going to clash with anything or be invalidated.

Incoming post about glasses: I'll just be linking and talking about two different stores to buy specialized glasses from, one of which I've personally bought. I figured why not. First up is Akujin Corps.

https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/Akujinscos

Akujin has glasses for pretty much any character that needs them, most notably people usually get their Dirk glasses from there. You'll also find glasses for the Libra trolls too, and so much more. Prices are a bit high, something like $30.00 at least for each pair, but I think it's pretty good. Next is Lightning and Lace.

http://lightningandlace.storenvy.com/

Pic related is their glasses for Dirk, and the ones I use personally. I just think the shape and size is just perfect, though it's also more transparent? Less opaque? Whatever is the right term, basically it's easier to see through so if you look closely you can see someone's eyes. Which can be good if you've got say, orange contacts underneath. The only very minor gripe is that there are screws which help the stability, and two regular screws will stick out on black glasses. But you can just paint them black or whatever. Lightning and Lace also has glasses for John and Jade, but it's kinda pricey at $12.00 each. Those are the only glasses they have for Homestuck though, Akujin's selection is much greater.

And this has been glasses. There are alternate methods of course, such as just straight up making your own (in the case of Dirk for instance, using plexiglass and all that), but if you're looking to just buy them, either of those two stores will suffice.

I went as Dirk to a con once, just minding my own business looking at stuff in the dealer's room. Then this girl says she wants to take my picture and told me to pose with her friend, and I'm like, well, of course, no problem. I strike a pose, her friend stands there a bit awkwardly not knowing what to do, and I'd want to go on my way, but apparently she then wanted me to kiss her friend on the cheek. They all looked no older than 15 or 16. It was just awkward overall, I suppose. Thankfully other Homestucks came by and started chatting and I just slipped on out of there.

Probably a bit of a tame story, but has anything like that ever happened to you guys? Just dealing with slightly over excited Homestuck cosplayers, while in Homestuck cosplay?

>"Nooooo but it's so swishy I need to touch it!!"
>Eventually give up trying to stop people fucking with the cape because I can wash it out later I suppose
>Later run into a long-time friend dressed as Mink from DMMd
>I'm impressed with his wig so I start messing with it a little to get a better look, since I'm wearing armsocks and we've been mates since 2007, he doesn't mind because he knows I won't break his shit
>one of the Homestucks that couldn't keep her grey fingers off my cape sees me talking to him and comes up to be nosy
>also impressed with his wig, reaches out to touch it
>I quickly stop her and remind her about her paint because jfc it's one thing to get grey over someone's clothes, at least it'll wash out my cape, it won't wash out of his wig
>She looks at me with a confused expression, looks at her hands and then back at me
>Her palms are brown, almost all the paint had fucking worn off in the three or so hours we'd been at the con
>Even more reason why I don't want you getting your grubby mitts all over my friend!

Best part is that this friend was previously interested in Homestuck because I used to post about/cosplay from it and I'd almost gotten him to cave and start reading, but after meeting the Homestucks at this con he's changed his mind.

No, you're right. They are always the shittiest sprites, and I think the answer is a little bit of both. Because Davesprite has that Strider manpain, it attracts cosplayers who like the character but absolutely do not have the skill to pull him off. And of the four sprites in the beta session, I think Davesprite is the one that requires the most work and has the highest chance for most things to go wrong. Jadesprites can get away with a skirt and look fucking fantastic; Davesprite is a male character, so the default is to wear pants, which automatically draws attention to things like large hips and doesn't really look all that nice to begin with. Rigging sword harnesses for the chest is tough, and making wings that actually look nice is tougher.

>> No.7685940

I also think it has to do with less Davesprites experimenting with design and taking artistic freedom? Which is a shame really.

On the topic of skirts I'd love to see a Davesprite with a very straight skirt, think those Kanye have worn at a couple of instances. Perhaps with a mullet-cut to emaluate tailfeathers? Or just really large sewn tail feathers, just to make something interesting of it.

Pretty sure the stripes were added on by the cosplayer. The black/white scheme is okay for sollux imo because those were the colors his eyes were when half-dead. Not my favorite part of the costume but they really don't ruin it.

Also, bit confused, what makes them "raver boots" rather than normal boots? Is it because they're not skinny-leg? I've used boots with similar non-fitted legs for (non-HS) cosplays and never gotten negative concrit on that part. Googling "raver boots" just brings up those Clydesdale-leg-looking things.

Personally I find the boots to be obnoxious because they look overly fussy and not like something Sollux would wear. If you're going to add a lot of detail to a design it should either make sense thematically (doom jacket being all ripped up) or in-character.

Not sure what raver boots means, though.

The stripes are what kill it for me. They look like something someone would wear with their hot topic outfit.

General preference from best to see down to worst:

> well made, well painted handmade horns
> well painted or customized store horns
> badly painted store horns
> lumpy, badly mounted, or stupidly sized homemade horns

it tends to be pretty frowned on here, really. look up horn tutorials on homestuckcosplayhelp or some bnf blogs. mohawkdandy did a good tutorial for larger horns, i think.

if you just can't build horns to save your ass, see if you have a friend who does good ones and ask about commissioning a pair. if you don't have a friend who can make decent horns, go for it, but i really suggest working on horn making if you want to cosplay trolls.

just be sure to mount them so that they don't slide around on your head.

I'd rather have bought horns than those, to be honest. They look just really off, can't put my finger on what it is exactly.

I don't think it looks bad, but TONS of Aradias (and other cosplayers with horns, hell I've seen people paint these and sell them on etsy) use them and I can immediately pick out the ones who do. So I'm kind of tired of seeing everyone use them

I vastly prefer these over bad-looking homemade ones, but as-is they're significantly too big for Aradia, hers are never the size of her whole head. I would recommend cutting the base off and painting them. And if you have time. sanding down the seams.

Yeah absolutely. The big upside to pax is that it lasts multiple days. Just don't cover your armpits or any other especially sweaty parts.
