First off, hey other Louisvillian. Fuck, Fandomfest was awful. They left guests at the airport, lost Tom Baker's panel entirely. I went, it was alright. I spent most of my time shepherding young Homestucks out of traffic. The staff was rude, and no one knew what they were doing. Apparently the guy who runs it, knew that they were about to reach capacity from the Fire Marshals, but continued to sell tickets. That got the entire building evacuated, and it took hours before they could let people in again. He didn't care. Sold tickets were sold tickets.

I'm amazed they got another year.

They tried to run an "anime" con, too. "Kamikon Alpha," in the Galt House. They just taped "Kamikon" over the Fandomfest signs. The staff, again, was rude, and it cost something like $25 for a day pass + $10 parking. There were easily less than a hundred people there. Again, the staff didn't seem to know what they were doing, or were rude.

One day this city will have a decent con. Fuck.

Gamzee/Roxy cosplayers using their character to get as wasted/high as possible and be intoxicated around others, Vriska/Mindfang cosplayers using their character to be drama queens, Meulin/Nepeta cosplayers using their character to glomp strangers and behave immaturely, etc.

I also apologize if I came off unsympathetic, I've had a friend have a similar event happen to her but she had sex with them anyways because she didn't want to hurt their feelings and she told me in private afterwards she regretted it. When that happens, there's really not much to say other than to just comfort them and then scold them later saying they could've said no and left it there. Better to have someone's feelings hurt than have regrets or have the situation get violent.

How bad is the creepyness at these places? I dont expect people to really recognize that i would be a character at all. So i think i could fly under the radar most of the time. I'm grumpy because I got talked into going to another con this weekend, and I hate road trips.

This is how I feel about Sukoshi: it's... cute. It's small, and the audience IS primarily young, but overall, when I've been and just shrugged it off as a fun thing to do over the weekend with my friends, I've actually really enjoyed myself. It is very small, and don't get too hyped about the panels or content. The Dealer's hall was very healthy considering a con of its size (it's probably because it's a traveling show, so it gets a bunch of bigger dealers). Cosplays were alright. Two years ago, I actually won the best-in-show contest because the staff made me enter. My prize was a ticket to next year and a printed out sheet of hotel printer paper of a Word Document with my name scribbled on it. I still have it on my fridge.

It has been growing exponentially, the difference between Sukoshicon from two years ago and Pokecon last year was huge. The local staff is very friendly. There's some shit floating around about the con chair, but I don't know the guy, so I don't really know.

I might go to one day at Fandomfest- Otakon is either the weekend before or after, and I don't wanna burn myself out.

I drove all the way out to Owensboro for OMGcon 3 weeks ago. It was smaller, like 3 thousand or so people, but is also exponentially growing. Increased 30% from the previous year. It was a great convention, far better than Lexcon.

If you live more than an hour away and aren't going for just shits and giggles, you might be disappointed.

I'm a Louisville local, so it was just a fun thing to do over the weekend. I know Louisville has an active anime/con community somewhere, and I wanted to meet some of them. Unfortunately, I'm a bit old for Sukoshi's intended audience. Most of the attendees were under 21, and a good chunk of them under 18. Still, there was fun to be had if you took it with a grain of salt.

Bringing more elaborate cosplays definitely feels like bringing an assault rifle to a knife fight. Not that there aren't talented cosplayers there- they just wisely chose different, more casual costumes to wear. If you come in overly fancy, prepare to get mobbed by a bunch of overenthusiastic kids.

Sukoshicon bills itself as a "social" convention, and that's definitely their focus! It's more about hanging out, meeting people, reinforcing small communities. (Since they tend to hit cities that are sort of in-between large con communities, like instead of Atlanta, they go to Athens, etc.) To that end, it does a great job! Most of the people I saw were genuinely having a good time, and seemed very relaxed. I'm used to cons like Otakon and Katsucon, which while huge and fun, can be massively stressful and exhausting.

So I'd say it's worth going to if you take a comfy outfit, a friend, and consider it like an overgrown meetup. Louisville also has a lot of good bars downtown, so go drinking in the evenings, not really anything going on at the con after dark.

i remember when the homestuck community in my area was small, reserved, and family-like. now a lot of the old fans have moved on leaving the rest of us with the new generation, and there is a HUGE costume quality gap. the old kids usually stick together and with the friends who moved onto other fandoms to keep away from the new gen, but obviously there are some times the two worlds meet. im used to being embarassed by the new gen. like this one time at MTAC.

Actually, same. Most of the ones I met usually just keep to their little corners and groups and don't cause too much trouble, they're just... sitting around, chatting, being mostly harmless. I guess the fear is there, with inexperienced cosplayers with unsealed paint, all of a sudden it's a nightmare, but honestly, some cons are huge and you're also going to run into other problems aside from them. I think people exaggerate how often it happens, but that said, I'm sure it does happen with some truly unruly people.

I've had my spider!Vriska glasses stolen from me at a meet, that's the worst I've had, but I've seen things such as the makeout circles and stuff, but I just turn around and leave. I've run many Barstuck events and yeah they tend to be some of the best homestuck meets. I keep mine very strictly 21+ and require everyone buy SOMETHING, even if it's soda/snacks/they aren't drinking, since we're taking up space in a business. One year I went to a con with my friend who was a homestuck, and hence stuck around her and other homestucks. One night as the con was dying out/people were starting to party we were sitting around on the con floor and talking. A qt3.14 Roxy cosplayer, in all her shitfaced glory, slunk up next to me, and in her slurred voice told me how pretty I was repeatedly. I had awful confidence back then and it was the cutest and sweetest thing ever.
Despite not being into homestuck, I now have a soft spot for Roxy cosplayers.

Went to a steampunk con with four roomates, it was the worst three days of my life.

The AZ community used to be pretty cool, meetups were fun. We were like a little family it was nice.
And then came the yaoi shipping 12 year olds who felt the need to grind eachother in public, shout cuss words around little kids, and crawl on floors. They managed to get all cosplayers banned from 2 public places (tempe market and gameworks)
plus tons of harassment started popping up in the community, it was awful.
I miss the good ol days.

now don't get me wrong, some of you guys are pretty cool its just the way younger overacting hardcore stuckfags that ruin it for me at cons now I would say sometimes like "hey that Roxy's kinda cute" but then she's probably underage so definite nope town there anyways back to stories and I've got a few from my con experiences.. kinda short and sweet

There was that time that a group of homestucker's thought it would be a fucking awesome idea to all have a hot tub party and wash allllll there grey paint off in the hot tub since they seemed to be too lazy to go up to there hotel rooms.. or lack there of while being loud and chatting up a storm, well the hotel literally had to demolish the tub and fill it in because of all the grey paint that would not come out of that tub

Also I survived a promstuck that I drew the short straw for when I was working con security one time.. that was the weirdest awkward two hours I ever had to do

There's a dude who's been to almost every convention I've been at (the last one I went to was the first time I never came across him, actually). My sisters and I have dubbed him "fucking Brian" (I know his real name, and it's hilarious, but I'm not going to be a dick and invade his privacy). He's a loud mouthed attention whore who tries to be BFF's with the guests, and clearly wants to be "that guy everyone knows", which he seems to have succeeded at, but not in a positive way.

Admittedly, he's become less obnoxious over the years though.

Not really a horror story, but a little laugh on my end of it.
